The Current State of Affairs

Here in Pennsylvania, it suddenly turned fall this week.  I’ve been putting off buying fall clothes and changing over the closets because it’s been so warm.  After my kids complained about being cold yesterday morning, I decided I couldn’t procrastinate any longer.  So I hauled down from the attic a bin of C’s outgrown fall/winter clothes to sort through and inventory for R.  Turns out she still needs a few things.  That started the ball rolling.

Yesterday I took the girls to an outlet mall in our area to shop for fall clothes.  We struck gold at the Osh Kosh outlet.  In addition to cute clothes and a good sale, they gave me a 20% off coupon to use.  SCORE!  I must have looked pretty desperate as I stood there at the register, laden down with clothes, asking them if there was a promotion going on in the VIP coupon booklet that I left sitting on my kitchen counter at home.

The salesgirl said that there was a $5 off voucher in the VIP book, but she had a better coupon.  And then she produced the 20% off.  I guess it was in a recent mailer.  So now I’m on the mailing list so I can be sure to leave THOSE coupons at home next time I decide to go shopping.

When I got home yesterday afternoon, I began pulling out the summeriest of the summer clothes to put away, and then I started the whole chore of sorting.  Give away, throw away, save for the next kid, sell on ebay, keep in the drawer for the occasional hot day in November — you get the picture.

Then I pulled down the fall clothes I had bought ahead and figured out what they still need.  And then there was more sorting.  Some stuff I put in their drawers.  Other stuff will return to storage until it gets colder.

In the end, I had about two dozen different piles of clothes and shoes laying about my upstairs.  This is what is left in my hallway today.

And this is the state of our bedroom.

As you can see, I still have a ways to go.  I know it doesn’t LOOK organized, but it is.  Really.  Each pile has a very specific purpose.

And did I mention that I’m entertaining tomorrow night?  I’m entertaining tomorrow night.  So now you know, and your life is complete.

So besides cleaning and baking and grocery shopping, I need to find a home for all the piles of clothes laying about.  Which begs the question, what on earth am I doing HERE?

  1. We live about 20 minutes from an Osh Kosh and a Carter’s outlet. We’ve been known to strike gold there on occasion 🙂

Hey, don’t feel bad! I have matching piles here, too! It’s that time of year…

  2. I got my bins out of the attic about a week ago and know that they’ll be down for about a month before we can totally put all of the summer stuff away (I’m in Texas). It’s a hassle saving clothes, but I can’t imagine how expensive it would be to start each new season from scratch! I’m so thankful for hand me downs.

  3. It got cold too fast in Michigan as well. Usually we have more time to do the “switchout”. My youngest was caught with one pair of pants!

  4. We are blessed that both our girls wear the same size shirts and can sometimes wear the same size bottoms. We have one closet for the summer clothes and one closet for the winter clothes. It works out pretty good unless they both want to wear the same thing :{

In our previous house, we had to do the same thing you are doing. I don’t miss those days!!

    Hugs!

  5. Ugh! This is the major problem with the change of season. I hate all the buying, sorting, donating.

The only positive is that at the end of it all, I will have two very neat and orderly closets…for about two minutes!

  8. I practically live at Carter’s each September. I swear I’m there AT LEAST once a week as I attempt to change over the wardrobes.

Wouldn’t it be great if WE could get all new clothes each season?

  9. I think I’d just throw it all out to the curb and have an impromptu yard sale but that probably wouldn’t help much. I hate the seasonal clothes change thing.

  10. Just catching up after two weeks of cross country moving! I feel your closet cross over pain. But isn’t it nice, the cooler weather? That is until mid January when I start complaining about being completely over being cold. But now its good.

I have no doubt you will be completely ready to entertain!

  11. We are starting to go through that too. It was really warm this week, but will be back to MN cool next week. time for sweaters and jeans (yippee!!). I can’t wait.

  12. Oh, the same reason I am here commenting on your blog instead of getting my son ready to take to preschool. He is still in jammies and carpool starts in 30 minutes!

  13. Why is it we always seem to get the urge to organize and clean in big ways when company is arriving? I did the same thing last week and my brother-in-law checked in to our “hotel” last night. Enjoy the new clothes for your girls. I’m sure they’re as excited as you are!

  14. I hate the annual sort and change. But I also love it because I get to see what we saved from the year before. Right now we only have a little bit in storage, because the girls wear essentially the same size and the boys can share a lot too. I’m trying to avoid buying everything in sight for Baby. It is HARD!
