The Last of the Firsts

Although I posted her picture with the big kids on Tuesday, yesterday was technically R’s first day of preschool.  Tuesday was just her orientation.  In fact, she was quite miffed that I didn’t leave her there by herself.  She kept saying, "You leave.  I ‘tay here."  No separation anxiety there!

So yesterday, after we put the big kids on the bus, R and I strolled back to our house to get her ready to go to school.  She threw a fit when I told her it wasn’t time to leave yet.  Oh this is going to be a LONG year.

Finally it WAS time to leave, and I stood her outside and took her picture.  She happily obliged.

Wanna see something fun?  Here’s a blast from the past.

That’s C on her first day of preschool three years ago.

Any-WHO.  I drove R to school, and she eagerly clamored out of the car and walked confidently into the building and down the hall, right past a hysterical mother and classrooms of screaming and crying children.  She was utterly unphased by the chaos.  She had walked those same halls taking her big sister to class for the past two years, and she was more than ready to start her own preschool career.

We found her classroom and walked in.  We were a few minutes late (I didn’t want to set up any unrealistic expectations by being on time) so everyone else was already there.  A few kids looked sad, but I was happy to note there was no screaming or crying.

I helped R empty her backpack of the required first-day-of-school supplies as the teacher tried to assure me that she would do fine, even if she was sad when I left.  Evidently she had been making that little speech all morning.  Then R looked right at me, smiled, waved, and said, "You go home."

The teacher and I both bust out laughing.  I assured her that I didn’t anticipate any trouble leaving her, and I said goodbye and walked out the door.  And that, as they say, was that.  I had two glorious hours of absolute freedom before I had to start the pick-up rounds.

Both girls are going half-days this year, so I have to pick them both up within 15 minutes of each other.  I wasn’t surprised to find that two hours fly by, but I sure did enjoy my little reprieve.  The only bad part is, I have to wait until next Tuesday to do it again.

  1. My daughter threw herself the biggest tantrum when she had to go home from preschool last year. Moments that make a mother proud I tell ya!

  2. Awwww! So glad R. had her special first day and is part of the school crowd now. Sounds like she has been tapping her foot waiting for her turn at PreK. Cute!

I feel the same way about setting unrealistic time expectations…hahahaha.

  3. Sounds about like what my kids would tell me. You go home now Mom. Peace, Mom. Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.

Makes you feel loved don’t it?

  4. Glad it went well. My youngest was in Nursery for a whole 60 minutes twice this week!!
Next week, it will be 3 mornings, they really drag it our for a month before it will finally be 2 hours and 30 minutes for 5 mornings – and he is already more than ready for that!

  5. LOL. Yeah, but I’ll take it. Beats a screaming crying kid clinging to your leg. :=) I’ve had it that way too. And that is miserable.

  6. Adorable! Those 2 hours sure go fast don’t they? I’m amazed how quickly the day flies by before I’m making the pick up rounds and that’s with Darla and Micah at school all day:)

  7. I loved comparing the pics of C and R. So cute! It is amazing how fast the child-free time goes though!

  8. I had my first 2 hours to myself today. It was VERY nice. Until this year, my girl’s schedules have never worked together towards my favor, so I will be enjoying every minute. And then, enjoying them even more!
