The Sound of Silence

I am enjoying ABSOLUTE SILENCE this morning.  I am not one to have music or the TV playing in my home.  I like peace and quiet.  But even without constant TV or music, silence in a household with 3 kids under the age of 9 is a rare delight, so I treasure it when I get it.  I even went so far as to turn off Twitter this morning so there are no ding-dong alerts going off.  My 2 older kids are at school, and my 3-year-old is miraculously entertaining herself.  The silence is DIVINE.

I have spent the morning catching up on emails and reading Blissdom recaps and What I Learned This Week posts.  I still have about 25 emails flagged for action and a to-do list as long as my arm with design work and review posts calling my name.

BUT.

I wrote yesterday about pushing the reset button.  And that’s what I intend to do today.  I’m leaving in a bit to pick up my daughter from kindergarten, and when I do I’m going to turn off the computer.  I plan to spend the rest of the day with my kids, getting my house back in order (I haven’t even unpacked yet!) and preparing my bible study for Friday (a novel idea — usually I wait until the night before.)  I’m sure I’ll be peeking at my Blackberry from time to time, and I know my emails flagged for action will double.  But they will be there when I get back.  I feel the need to walk away for a bit.

Yes, I realize that walking away for one afternoon is hardly admirable, but I’m all about the baby steps.  Set small, attainable goals, and you’re less likely to fail, right?  Today is the last day of our spring tease, and then it’s back to winter for a while longer.  I plan to enjoy it!

  1. It looks like you picked a great day to hit the reset button. Enjoy the sunshine!!

On a completely different note, I’ve been meaning to thank you for changing your feed to show the entire post. It has made it so much easier for me to keep up with you. Thanks!

  2. Enjoy!!! We’re having beautiful weather too. LOVE having my windows open all day.

I also can’t stand noise going on in my house all day long. TV goes off mid-day, and I rarely play music (unless I need to get motivated to clean!!). I just prefer quiet. I think it has to do with me being an only child!! I just can’t think if there’s too much noise!

  3. We have been passing around the plague and I have not had silence in a week…I am actually taking my 3 year to pre-school tomorrow and Friday even though Thursday is not one “her” days because I need some time alone to CATCH up….
Good luck and have fun this afternoon.

  4. Go for it! Yesterday I took off to the park with Little Pea for the whole afternoon. It was heavenly – the work will be there when you come back!

  5. Enjoy your afternoon! I hit reset myself today by taking time to go get a pedicure. I figured it was a good way to use part of the last warm day for awhile!

  6. You’re wrong, it IS admirable! It’s tough in this “age of information” to simple be without the constant pulse of technology.

    Good for you. Baby steps.

  7. I think it is great that you are taking an afternoon. One step at a time! You can’t change overnight, you would freak a bit!

Have a great afternoon with the kids!!

  8. I love it when I have a gorgeous day to reset. Its scary but true that the whole world doesn’t fall apart when we step away from the keyboard!

    Enjoy and don’t feel guilty!

  9. Good for you…..and I know how hard it is. All too often I convince myself no one will notice if I slip away and “just check one quick thing.” For the past few days I have just turned the computer OFF as I leave to pick up my daughter from school. We’ve all loved it, I’ve gotten so much more done AND I’ve just beem more available for hanging out. Turns out I was missed more than I thought 😉

  10. Sounds like a great plan for your day. I really enjoyed your post about setting the reset button and hope to do that more myself. Enjoy the quiet! 🙂

  11. I have to do this every now and then, too. I always feel refreshed and more focused after I do.

Incidentally, I’m so glad to know that I’m not the only one who prepares her Bible study the night before! I’m sure you’ve started to notice by now, the “last-minute Annie” thing (think CC posts!) is kind of a trend with me. 🙂
