Tips for Pattern Mixing: Stripes & Cheetah Print

Hello, Monday! Who is feeling the DSH (daylight savings hangover) this morning? 🙋🏻‍♀️

I’m back home after a whirlwind trip to Disney World. We had a great time, but it’s always nice to be home, especially after a destination as hectic as that one.

I’ve got a work wear look for you today, and I’m doing a little pattern mixing.

This bateau neck sweater is one of my best finds so far this season. It’s priced just under $50 and comes in a gazillion different color ways with both solid and striped options.

I love the way it skims the body without clinging, and it has a flattering bateau neckline. Plus the soft, lightweight knit fabrication is perfect for transition season. It runs true to size; for reference, I have the small.

For today’s look, I paired this sweater with black pants for a work wear look, but it’s also adorable with white jeans, blue jeans, or you could also incorporate one of the colors — maybe the green?

The pants I’m wearing here actually come in a great shade of kelly green they call green amazon.

I’ve shared these pants once before with a floral blouse, but I wanted to feature them again because they’re so versatile.

These classic black trousers have a skinny, ankle-length silhouette and 4-way stretch fabric for maximum comfort and shape retention.

I also appreciate the flat front with a side zip so there’s no added bulk across the midsection, and the split hem at the ankle is a nice detail. For size reference, I have the 8. I wear a 6 at Loft and Banana, for reference.

Because my bag and shoes have gold hardware, I wore a couple pieces of gold jewelry.

These double hoop earrings are delicate but large enough to stand out against my dark hair. I also like the contrast of the circles against the linear pattern in the sweater.

I also wore a simple gold bangle. I’ve had this bracelet for years, and it is a classic piece that I can wear alone or stack with other bangles. Since the sleeves on this sweater are long, I just wore the one.

Typically I’d keep a look like this simple with black pumps or loafers, but I thought these cheetah print flats were a fun alternative.

For one thing, I like how the gold hardware picks up the gold from my bag and jewelry, but I also thought it was fun to do some pattern mixing. Plus ballet flats are one of the best transition shoes for spring because you get some foot coverage but they’re lighter than booties.

There are a few tricks to pattern mixing so you don’t look like you got dressed in the dark.

I like to choose one pattern to be the focal point and the other to be the accent. In this case, the sweater is the dominate pattern because of its large scale and bold mix of colors, and the smaller scale cheetah print is the accent.

Both prints incorporate black and white, which isn’t required when pattern mixing, but it does help the combination look more intentional.

It also helps that the two prints are broken up by the solid black pants, so it doesn’t look too busy.

  1. I love how your blog posts combine info about where to buy great pieces as well as tutorials about how to create oufits. You give readers info about every detail of your look so that not only do we know where to shop but how to put everything together.
    Fantastic post, as always!

  2. Cute outfit. I’m going to put winter clothes away today except a few cardigans. We never had much winter in Savannah. 🙁

  3. Glad you had a great trip and are home safe and sound… I remember all to well those full days spent in the Disney parks… we did Volcano Bay last May when we went it was a blast… and some loungers for sunning sure helped.😉 pretty outfit today too.

  4. Yes, also dragging from daylight savings time “hang over”. So glad you had a chance to get mini break away out of the cold and visit with family at Disney. Winter is lasting so long this year.

Love the striped sweater and cheetah print shoes combo. Its not one I would think of on my own.

  5. I love everything about this look, JoLynne. You always look so classy.  I also appreciate that you teach us so many things in your posts.
    Have a wonderful week!

  6. That is a beautiful sweater!  It makes me wish I lived in a climate where I needed to wear more sweaters.  I like your pattern mixing!  Question:  If I’m wearing a gold tee under a light grey cardigan, will it look okay if I wear grey lightweight sneakers that have light yellow trim/accent?  Or would I be better off wearing solid grey athleisure shoes?  I will be carrying a bright yellow/gold handbag and wearing grey jeans.  I’ll be wearing this outfit on Wednesday.  Thank you!

    1. Hey Ginger, that may look a little matchy-matchy, but it’s hard to say. It could be cute. I’d put it together and take a picture – just in the mirror – and then look at the picture and see what you think. I think it’s easier to tell that way.

      1. Thanks!  I should have thought of taking the picture since I’ve done that in the past.  I ended up wearing something totally different, so it was all good.

  7. Cute outfit! Love the pants. Do they bag out with wear? I keep buying similar black pants but they seem to grow as the day goes..Thanks!

  8. I purchased the Something Navy Lily Flat styled here and now wondering if it was a good choice. The shine itself is very comfortable, but the pattern is a stretch for me. Did you keep this shoe? Besides the ankle black or navy pants, how else can I wear this shoe?
    Perplexed in Minnesota.

    1. Hey Deb. I did keep them! 🙂 I will definitely wear these with blue jeans as well as black pants. I can see them with blue jeans and a pink top or red top or all neutrals. I’d wear them with yellow pants or red or even pink. They’re really very neutral. I’ll try to do some try-ons with them to show some other ways I’ll be wearing them.
