{Top 10} Christmas Songs (and then some)

We’ve had Christmas music wafting through the house for the past few weeks now.

I have a playlist on my iPhone of my favorite 25 songs, and they play over and over and over — in the car, in my office, in the kitchen . . . As much as I love them, I admit I could use some fresh blood in my Christmas playlist.

This week I decided to join Amanda’s {Top 10} Tuesday blog carnival, and I made a list of my 10 (or s0) very favorite Christmas tunes. I’d love to add a few new ones to my playlist, so please leave your favorites in the comments!!!

My 10+ Favorite Christmas Songs

1. Ring The Bells :: Travis Cottrell (featuring Natalie Grant)

2. I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day :: Casting Crowns

3. Joy to the World :: Yancy (from her Have A Fancy Yancy Christmas album)

4. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear :: Mercy Me

5. Deck the Rooftop :: Glee Cast

6. Joy to the World :: Yancy

7. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlmen :: Mercy Me

8. Here With Us :: Joy Williams

9. O Come All Ye Faithful :: Josh Groban

19. Silent Night :: Jewel (She has so many good ones; I just picked this b/c it’s one of my favorite Christmas songs ever — the theology never ceases to humble me. But truthfully, her version of Joy To The World is one of my all time faves.)

BONUS: I know this was supposed to be top 10 but I can’t end this list without something from Martina.

11. O Holy Night :: Martina McBride (Her version of O Come All Ye Faithful is lovely too.)

I also really enjoy When Love Came Down by Point of Grace.

Okay, I give up. I can NOT keep this list to 10!! So here is one last one — The First Noel by Josh Groban and Faith Hill. Duets always do me in.

Still, I admit, I am tiring of the same 15 (or 25) songs over and over, so if you have some you think I should add, please let me know in the comments!!

  1. Every year we listen to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra CD. They come to Cleveland every Christmas season; it’s a great concert. My 18-yr-old loves I Want a Hippo for Christmas; it’s really cute.

  2. You are probably going to laugh but you need to check out the song, The Peace Carol by John Denver and the Muppets. It is such a lovely song and one of my favorites! BTW, your list is great and includes a lot of my favorites too!

  3. Oh, I love me some Christmas music. And I do love Yancy’s album. The kids especially love it.

I also love Michael Buble’s new one. His Jingle Bells is the best. And Crystal Lewis’ is an eternal fave here. Do you have A Very She & Him Christmas? I think it’s $5 on Amazon right now. It’s a good one.

OK. I could go on and on.

  4. I’m such an old soul… I love the crooners: Bing, Dean, Frank, Nat, etc. 🙂 Andy Williams singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” always makes me smile!

  5. My favorites Christmas albums are:
    Diana Krall, Christmas Songs
Pink Martini, Joy to the World
She & Him, A Very She & Him Christmas
    Elvis Presley, Blue Christmas
    Matt Dusk, Peace on Earth
Ella Fitzgerald, Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas
    Sarah McLachlan, Winter Song

  6. This is a lot of versions I’m not familiar with, so I will be checking them out! I did recently discover I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day by Casting Crowns and oh my that is good! Can I also suggest you add the Jars of Clay version of Little Drummer Boy? I am not usually a fan of that song, but their version made me looove it! Also, I am an Amy Grant Christmas girl. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is an all-time fave, and she makes me LOVE Hark the Herald Angels Sing! “Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!” 🙂

  7. Okay, last comment I promise… I am listening now to the songs you listed (the ones I could find on Spotify, which is most of them). I didn’t realize I knew that Ring the Bells song, but our choir sang it in church on Sunday and I was mesmerized. I had forgotten to look for it, so I am so happy you brought it up! Love it!

  8. So, I think my Christmas playlist has like 200 songs on it. Now a lot of those are the same song by different artists. It drives Travis crazy. I will recommend some albums and you can pick the songs. My kids love Let It Snow/Let it Reindeer by Reliant K. And we like it too. It has the fun songs that I usually don’t care for (I’m Gettin’ Nuttin’ for Christmas is a fave of theirs) and some punk arrangements of traditional songs (12 Days of Christmas done in 3 minutes!). I mostly prefer traditional hymns with new arrangements, but I’m trying to be more fun and varied. I just bought the She & Him Christmas album this year and it is nice. Kind of poppy/bluesy/jazzy songs. My absolute favorite Christmas album purchase this year is Oh For Joy by the David Crowder Band. All songs you know, but with their unique sound. Really incredible. I listen to it over and over. Also, I bought a Christmas album by Bebo Norman that has some good songs. Amazon did have 100 Holiday albums for $5 each. Don’t know if they still do, but that is where I bought several albums b/c it was so cheap as to be worth it if I just liked a few songs.

  9. I’ve been listening to the FioS Christmas channel all.day.long for weeks now. I just love having it play in the background. I laugh each time the Little Drummer Boy plays, as it’s my mother’s favorite and we pulled a great prank on her one year. I made a CD filled with just one version of LDB and we put it in the CD changer. I think it took her 5 plays to realize something was up. Such a great memory so it’s now on my list of favorites for that reason.

  10. I love, love, LOVE Taylor Swift’s version of silent night. Another song that I would highly recommend is Stephanie Smith’s I Celebrate The Day. I dare you to not tear up – it is that good and that emotional.

    Merry Christmas! 🙂

  11. I love love love anything Josh Groban – his holiday music brings tears to my eyes – especially “Believe” from Polar Express. Oh, and when B101.1 does the children’s choir competition, I lose it! I think it was last year one of the choirs did “Believe” and I would sob in the car it was so beautiful. Anyhoo….one of my all time favorites is “Caroling, Caroling” sung by Nat King Cole. I’m a sucker for all of the old school crooners.

  12. Love the Casting Crowns, Mercy Me, and Point of Grace albums (the 1st one). Martina’s is good too. I have those all on my Christmas playlist. 🙂 Just listened to the Fancy Yancy…..that one sounds like so much fun!

  13. here are some of my favourites: See Amid the Winter Snow, O Little town of Bethlehem, In the Bleak Midwinter (Annie Lennox’s Christmas Cornucopia CD). Good King Wenceslas (Skydiggers). Silent Night (Wilson Phillips; also by the Mannheim Steamroller – instrumental. This is the most peaceful version I have ever heard of this carol. the ending is spine-shilling). Auld Lang Syne (the Barra McNeils). Do You Hear what I Hear (The Rankin Sisters). Baby It’s Cold Outside (Brian Setzer and Ann-Margaret). Almost everything on Martina McBride’s CD 🙂

  14. Song for a Winter’s Night by Sarah MacLachlan is one of my very favorites–sad but beautiful. I also love I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Casting Crowns. I wish B101 would play some of these listed here and in the comments instead of the same ones over and over. How many times can you listen to Feliz Navidad?!

  15. Christmas songs just highlight the festivities of the season and for me any Christmas song by Harry Connick, Jr, Elvis or some Christmas jazz soothes the soul.

  16. I thought of another song that I haven’t heard for awhile-Little Drummer Boy, sung by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. I love this version.

  17. I love all of the traditional Christmas Carols and look forward to listening to them each season. Here are some other favorites that fill out my playlist.

    Agnus Dei by Amy Grant
A Baby Changes Everything by Faith Hill
Christmas Is (feat. Mark Masri) by Jim Brickman
Mary, Did You Know? by Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd
Mary’s Boy Child (In the style of Boney M)–the steel drum sound is kind of fun on a chilly, snowy day up here in the Rockies.
Winter Wonderland, have both Afterglow and Anne Murray versions

Like others have said, anything by Martina is great. I also like Celine Dion’s “These Are Special Times” album.

These 2 are probably influenced by my daughter having sung them in her elementary school choir.
    * Do You Hear? by Teresa Jennings
    * Rockin’ Down the Chimney Tonight by Sally Albrecht & Jay Althouse
