25 Tops to Ease the Transition from Summer to Fall

Happy Thursday, friends! Summer is winding down, and many of us are getting excited for fall fashion, but the weather will likely be warm for quite a while.

One way I like to transition my summer wardrobe into fall while the weather is by wearing darker colors in lightweight fabrics with my shorts and jeans, so today I rounded up a bunch of transition tops you can start wearing now and also with fall outfits when the weather gets colder.

These pieces can easily be adapted for fall by throwing a denim jacket or cardigan on top and swapping out sandals for ankle boots or slides.

And then I had to use another shopping widget for Evereve and Talbots:

  1. These are great options! It really has been over the last few years that I’ve paid more attention to building a transition wardrobe. This used to be a frustrating time to figure out what to wear! Some years we have a fall and sometimes it seems like we go straight from summer to winter! We can have beautiful warm weather in September and October and have been known to have a warm November too… having the transition pieces really does make a difference when getting dressed each day!
    Enjoy your play day!

  2. Great post! Now I feel like I know what I’m doing when I go back to the office in a few weeks. I bought the leopard blouse and I can’t wait to wear it. 🙂

  3. I love the Evereve things you post, but I don’t love their return policy. It gets expensive, even though I’d love to order a bunch of things to try on. Any chance they will bring a store to the King of Prussia area soon? Or maybe I am missing something? The return window is small & they charge a fee for every return.

    1. I love White House Black Market, and I was trying to add some of their tops to one of the shopping widgets, but they are not set up so that their products work with the widgets. I don’t know why b/c they are with ShopStyle and rewardStyle. It’s frustrating.

  4. Thank you for posting these beautiful tops 🙂 I ordered one from Ann Taylor in a different color but same style. Ordered a pair of straight leg jeans the other day also . I am loving the straight leg style .

  5. I LOVE the Madewell rust-colored “sweatshirt”. I have credit at Madewell. I think I might order it! I was trying on some clothes yesterday with my light-colored jeans and thinking I don’t love the dark colors with the light jeans. With the lighter jeans in style now, do you think we’ll still go to darker denim for fall and winter, Jo-Lynne?

    1. Funny, my post tomorrow is about what to wear with light wash jeans. 🙂 I think we will see a lot of the lighter washes sticking around, but maybe more medium washes as well, as they do pair well with darker colors.

  6. Yes, I do like these, and ordered an Old Navy top and cropped cotton cardigan. At 5’1”, that length works for me. Plus, this post helps me to think of tops already in my wardrobe that will work.

  7. Love this post! Love the Talbot’s tops. I’m just not that crazy about huge puff sleeves and baggy tops that are in right now. That’s why I like your blog I can actually wear these options. I use to like WHBM but their things are really form fitting sometimes to much so, and too sexy for work.

    1. Yes, I am with you. Not crazy about puff sleeves and voluminous styles. And I agree, I love WHBM but the tops I have are often too sexy for church, so I save them for date nights and unfortunately don’t get to wear them a lot.

  8. I love so many of these tops and I truly found this post helpful! Even though we have very long summers here in southern Louisiana, it feels weird wearing light/bright colors past September. (I don’t know…maybe it’s just me) So having lots of transition tops comes in handy! Thanks!

  9. Jo-lynne,
Are you often accused of being overdressed when you’re simply dressed appropriately for the occasion? We went to dinner last night and I was floored by the way most people were dressed. In my own life my kids used to ask me where I was going when I put on jeans and a button up shirt. My answer was usually nowhere. I dress like this almost every day.
Our pastor came to our daughter’s wedding (not officiating) in blue jeans. I was shocked. I may sound like my grandma but what has happened to us?

    1. LOL, what? Jeans to a wedding? Unless that’s specifically part of the dress code, I’ve never seen that at a wedding. But I think the part of the country you’re in, and the general culture of the area plays into this type of thing. I live in an area that’s sort of suburban/rural, and I see a mix of styles, and generally people are pretty casual. I’ve never been accused of being overdressed, but I wear jeans most of the time. 🙂

  10. Good morning Jo-Lynne,

Thank you for the blog. However, I always wonder where you bought the green safari jacket you are wearing in the photo on this blog under “Stay Updated”. I would love to have several of those in different colors.

    Best regards.

  11. A cold-shoulder top is included with the pictures above. Does this mean they are still trending? I have one in a navy tie dye print that I still like wearing so am hoping they are still in style.

    1. They’re not trending in the way that they were a few summers ago, but the cutout trend is big this year, so I think we might see some coming back. This one is only cut out on one shoulder, and most cut-out styles are even more asymmetrical.

  12. My favourite one is the Camel sweater with dolman sleeves?I learnt this from you 😂(I had never heard of dolman sleeves before!LOL and now I’m making my personal fashion dictionary thanks to you 😉!) I’m a sucker for camel. As I don’t like black, since my skin complexion is fair, and I prefer to wear some colour,I find that camel is my go-to neutral. And I like grey as neutral,as well.

  13. This is a very helpful post. Thank you so much for putting it together for us. I saw several tops that I really like and will check out. Like you, I find myself leaning towards my darker color tops now. However, I do have a few light colored ones that I haven t worn much, so I need to get to wearing them. I hope that your friends and their little ones enjoy the pool.
