Transitioning Your Outfits from Winter to Spring: Lighter Layers

Greetings and happy hump day! Amy Ann and I are teaming up again to talk about dressing for transition season, and today we’re sharing how we plan to incorporate lighter layers into our daily outfits when the weather begins to warm up.

For today’s look, I layered this trench coat over the striped tee with jeans and sneakers outfit I shared yesterday.

I found this classic trench at LOFT, and it’s the perfect jacket for late winter / early spring. This “dusty pearl” color is so versatile and also very pretty.

I love that it’s a single-breasted style, which I find more flattering and less bulky than the more typical double breasted styles, and the tortoiseshell buttons are a nice detail as well.

It’s good quality too — fully lined, and it has some extra details like puffed sleeves and gathered back yoke that make it a little more feminine than your typical trench coat.

I usually think of a trench coat as a dressier wardrobe piece, and I know a lot of you in other areas of the country say you don’t wear them for that reason, so I thought I’d show how nice it looks to wear a classic trench with casual looks as well.

Granted, I typically gravitate to my more casual jackets for everyday, but I could totally wear this to the grocery store or for a casual coffee date with a girlfriend, and I like how the classic trench elevates this casual look and makes it look extra chic.

For reference, I’m wearing a small. Also, I got this trench on sale. It isn’t on sale at the moment, but if it’s a purchase you’re hoping to make, I do recommend waiting for the next Loft promotion.

Here are some more options for lightweight jackets for spring:

By swapping out our wool coats and heavy parkas for lightweight jackets in lighter colors, and our heavy sweaters with lighter tees and blouses, we keep our outfits seasonably appropriate while still getting the warmth we need while the weather takes its sweet time to warm up!

I’ll definitely be incorporating this trench into more of my outfits as we begin to get some milder weather over the next few weeks and months.

  1. I love this trench coat!   Would you mind sharing what size you are wearing?   I apologize if I missed that info in your post.  Thanks!

  2. Wow I didn’t realize Arizona got that cold… but yes still better than snow. We have a nice sunny -22 with the windchill again.. but it will warm up to bring snow tomorrow yippee!! We’ve hardly had snow this year which is un heard of but now it’s coming but not lasting 🤗.. You have made an other wise casual outfit a true classy outfit worn by a woman who knows what she’s doing by adding that trench. I agree we all go for the more casual jackets but this is gorgeous:) hope you have good weather and safe travels tomorrow

  3. I stopped wearing a trench coat when I moved to the west coast. We get so much rain I needed a proper hooded raincoat. This one is s cute, relaxed look for everyday though.
I hope your flight home is uneventful! I love to go places but detest air travel these days. It is such a hassle. Have fun exploring Phoenix!

  4. Thanks so much for posting this trench coat. It may be the perfect replacement for my bright pink single breasted trench from the Gap from years ago. I love mine, but it’s showing it’s age.

  5. Great piece! One of the things that I love about a trenchcoat is that it instantly elevates an outfit. If I am in a rush to pull something together it’s the perfect completer for an otherwise basic outfit. You do such a fantastic job of directing readers to these items and providing tutorials so that we know how to make it work in everyday life. Super thankful!!

  6. Love the trench very versatile for spring.
Smart move to stay day …coming from flight
Attendant…the weather has been so crazy.
We’re getting ice now in Chicago.
Enjoy your day in downtown Phx.

  7. Smart move to change your flight…. better enjoy the day exploring Phoenix rather than stuck in airport purgatory! Love going somewhere warm but really dislike the travelling and airports. Good luck with getting home! Like the idea of trench coats but its an east coast look. Living out west, it looks out of place for us.

  8. You totally made the right call in delaying your trip home.  It’s snowing really hard…and inch per hour and the roads aren’t great—it’s actually pretty slippery.  It’s a good thing the schools are closed.  I’m not far from you, in Bryn Mawr.  I’m glad you’re enjoying trip ad I hope you have an uneventful & safe journey home.

  9. Hi Jo-Lynne, This is a little off the subject, well way off the subject, but can you or any of your readers recommend a nice clear, stadium-approved hand bag? I’m looking for one that’s stylish but not terrible expensive as I won’t use it often, only for concerts or sporting events. Maybe a cross-body, something functional. If I have to expose all the contents in my bag, I’d at least like it to to be pretty! LOL

      1. I noticed the Truffle, I think it is, little pouch you recently showed in a newsletter also has crossbody bags.

  10. Love the color of the trench. I just bought one 2 years ago at the Banana Republic outlet.  Great sale, but its the traditional beige color with the same buttons on yours.  I think I’d like the color you have better. I live on the West coast and don’t see many people wearing trenches and I find myself not grabbing mine for some reason.  I don’t really know why, but need to do it as it does add chic to an outfit that would normally be casual.  Glad you get to stay an extra day.  Its pouring hail here on the West coast right now.  Crazy weather we’ve had for our area over the last few weeks.  We had our first snow…..6″ last week.  All gone now.
