Trend to Try: Varsity Stripes

Varsity stripes are having a moment this fall, and I’ve been incorporating this preppy trend into my fall wardrobe sparingly. I’m not a huge fan of preppy styles, but they can be fun in small doses, and they’re definitely experiencing a comeback in the fashion world right now.

I like how this striped v-neck sweater gives a nod to the varsity striped trend without taking it too literally. I paired it with my black jeans and black slip-on skate sneakers for a casual weekend vibe.

This sweater is a nice quality cotton blend that isn’t scratchy at all, but it runs slightly small — I’m wearing the small, and it just fits. If you like a little more room to breathe, I’d recommend sizing up — especially if you tend to run between sizes. I’m just hoping it doesn’t shrink!

The grey/black/white combo pairs really well with black denim, but I’m actually kind of kicking myself for not getting it in the blue classics combo. The more I look at it, the more I like it, and it’s a little more in keeping with the casual styling.

Either way, the sweater has a sporty vibe that’s perfect for wearing with fashion sneakers like these backless skate sneakers.

My black leather version is no longer available, but I’ll round up some other options below. This is my favorite style of sneakers for this time of year.

These jeans are my go-to black jeans, and they’re currently on sale at Bloomingdale’s. Their buy more, save more sale ends tonight, so if you have your eye on anything, now is the time to spring for it!

For jewelry, I just wore a mixed metal pendant and diamond studs to keep the look simple and casual.

  1. I really like that outfit. I’ve had the Rag and Bone black jeans from the Nsale in my shopping bag for some time. I need to decide if I’m going to pull the trigger or they’ll be sold out. I just got the iPhone XS Max this weekend. I’m a Samsung girl thru and thru but my daughter in law and son have been trying to persuade me to get an iPhone so I finally did. I’m not in love, but there are things I really like about it. 😊 Unfortunately Samsung is coming out with the 10th anniversary edition of the Galaxy line in January or February so I’m not sure I’ll be able to resist getting that. I’m already working towards paying this off so I’ll at least have the option of upgrading. 😁😁

    1. Apparently I just jinxed myself. I went back in to look at the jeans a minute ago and size is sold out. 🙄

  2. This outfit is totally me. Because I love black and grey and would be able to wear this to work. We all have black jeans or pants so this sweater would be a great fall piece to add. Unfortunately it doesn’t come in petite but I would be willing to pull up the sleeves or roll them up. Lol because it’s so cute. Last night FedEx delivered at 9:30 pm and it was some black slip on sneakers I ordered from Famous Footwear. I went with Skechers but very similar to the ones you showed, except they have a memory form insole. I had those black Steve Madden but after awhile they aren’t that comfortable and look more beige than white on the outside of the sneaker, kind of like if they were dirty so I opted for a different pair this year.

  3. Another cute outfit!  I continue to look for sneakers without a heal, that has arch support and narrow width.  With our super casual lifestyle, they would be my go-to shoes.  While you continue to deal with the rain, we continue to deal with very warm temps and high humidity.  And they are saying it’ll remain this way possibly until the end of October.  Yuck!  I hope you’re having a fabulous day!

  4. I am such a fan of black/grey and a monochromatic style. This outfit is such a terrific way to wear a trend and not feel like I am being super obvious. I am continually astounded and pleased that you show readers that they can be trendy and classic at the same time. ( and I can’t wait to discuss this outfit with my sister 😊)

  5. Love this Jo-Lynne:) I can see adding a denim jacket too if it’s cooler or wearing the chuck converse . Looks very versatile. Had a little mist today but still no big rain… cool one day muggy the next… oh well no snow 🤗

      1. Yeah we had our first frost yesterday morning and our wood stove on for the first time.. but could use a fan today.. crazy
