Homemade Chili Recipe

I love chili. I can think of nothing better on a cold winter day than a bowl of steaming hot chili, topped with scallions and cheddar cheese, and served with a side of cornbread. In fact, that’s what I’m making this afternoon, so I thought I would republish this recipe with the new pictures I took a few weeks ago!

Homemade Chili Recipe: this recipe has been in our family for years. Delicious and ready in an hour!

I grew up on this homemade chili recipe. I’ve tweaked it a bit, but it’s still pretty close to the one my mom used to make. I love that I can throw a pot of this homemade chili together in less than 20 minutes, and then let it simmer while I go about my business until all the flavors meld.

I use ground beef, but you could certainly substitute ground turkey if you’d like. I like to use a mixture of beans — white and red. Sometimes I get wild and crazy and throw a can of black beans in there as well.

I tend to keep mine fairly mild, but you can add hot sauce to make it as spicy as you like. Once the ingredients are all together, you should simmer for an hour or so, uncovered. (This is the perfect opportunity to make that cornbread!)

I serve mine with scallions and shredded cheese, just like my mama always did, and we also like to add a dollop of sour cream. In fact, my kids mix the sour cream into the chili and stir it all around until it looks more orange than red. Whatever floats their boat, I guess.

Here’s the recipe in an easy printable format. ENJOY!

  1. Once again, it seems you have read my mind. Or, maybe we share one, in which case my condolences to you! lol I just sat down and did a menu plan for the week (late as usual) and scheduled chili for Thursday, but didn’t necessarily have a recipe. I signed in to my reader and there you were waiting for me it seems. Now, I’m also planning on buying a lottery ticket…numbers please??? I’ve been reading your posts on going gluten free and I’m really curious about the whole thing. Thanks to you and your informative posts, we’ve been raw milk drinkers for quite some time and I now buy all my meat from a local rancher! Now I need to work on the local veggies and I’m thinking of maybe cutting back on alot of my carbs because they seem to be wreaking havoc with me currently! Thanks again!

      1. My friend joined one here locally but she said that it wasn’t really worth it to her because you can’t pick and choose what goes into your box. I guess they are not big eggplant and squash eaters and their box was abundant with them…lol I’m going to look into it also. I find it so funny that food shopping used to take me maybe an hour or two a week. Now, it’s become like a three day excursion because I have to go so far in opposite directions for my meat and dairy…lol It’s totally worth it, though.

  2. Yes! Have been having trouble thinking of things to cook for dinner. This will be Tuesday night for us – Tonight. Thank you for the idea.

  3. Do I dare to admit? I never tried chili in my life. We did not make it when I was growing up and now the idea of combining beans and tomato sauce seems foreign to me.
    Maybe some day

  4. Did you change your chili recipe? We loved it but kept laughing at it because you had a picture of the same pot going over 5 pages as you add each ingredient . I hope not to offend you but I am trying to find that recipe again because it was one of the few that everyone in my family enjoyed. It is very rare when that happens!

    1. Um, I’m not sure what you mean about the same pot going over 5 pages? 🙂 But it is the same recipe. I think I updated my photos at one point. I’m glad to hear you enjoy it! 🙂

  5. Your chilie recipe is very similar to mine including the muffins, I actually use the Jiffy mix muffins and we also love Tortilla chips. One extra thing I add is chopped celery when cooking the chilie, seems to give a little extra flavor.
Hope your shoulder problem turns out to be just a few visits to PT, they can do wonders with lazor treatment too. My son has been in therapy for awhile now due to a recent stroke and has had several lazor sessions for his shoulder.
