Trunk Club Unboxing

Hello and Happy Saturday! I received a delivery from Trunk Club last week so I’m sharing my unboxing today. For those who aren’t familiar, Trunk Club is Nordstrom’s personal styling service, and I love seeing what my stylist picks out for me. I am not working with Trunk Club, but I do share my referral link if you want to try it out. If you decide to try it, you’ll get a referral link to share with your friends too!

I really liked this trunk. I kept 3 pieces and I sent a few things back that I kind of wanted to keep. Contrary to how it may appear, I do not have unlimited budget and closet space (ha!) so I had to make some tough decisions.

Let’s start out with one of the winners.

This Gibson cold shoulder top was a pleasant surprise in this trunk. It’s a lot cuter on a person that it is on the hanger, and I think it would make a fun top for a GNO or date night with your honey. It also comes in navy, red, and ivory.

I love the flirty tie sleeves and trendy shoulder cut-outs. The longer length is fun for a change, and the side slit details are a nice touch. I should have thrown on a necklace with it to give you the full effect. Since it is so long, I tried the front tuck, but I think I like it better left out.

also wearing: AG raw hem legging ankle jeans // 1.STATE Rexana Block Heel Sandals

I debated heavily before deciding to return this top. I have a lot of date night/girls night out tops, and I don’t think I’d get enough wear out of this. If I had an event on the horizon, I’d definitely hold onto it, but everything I have going on this summer so far is super casual.

Sizes are getting depleted so if you want one, I’d suggest grabbing it sooner rather than later. For size reference, this is a medium.

These black block heel sandals also came in my trunk. These are super comfortable and I think the woven leather detail is really cool. Unfortunately, she sent a size 8 and I think I need a 7.5. Sandals can be weird like that. I wear an 8.5 in boots, for reference.

While I like these, I don’t think I’d wear them a ton so I sent them back. I do recommend them, though, if you’re looking for a chunky black sandal this summer. They also come in latte and white. The latte are GORG… If I didn’t have so many nude shoes already I’d order those in a heartbeat.

I think one of the biggest surprises in this box was this Madewell embroidered peekaboo top.

also wearing: AG raw hem legging ankle jeans // lucky brand jorey wedges sandals

I thought it would be way too sheer and boxy, plus it’s kind of cutesy for my taste, but when I put it on, I really liked it. The neckline is flattering and it has a nice shape to the body even though it’s not fitted. For size reference, this is a medium.

It obviously could use an iron (lol) but I can see myself getting quite a lot of wear out of this. It’s as cute paired with shorts as it is with jeans.

Speaking of shorts, I’ve been vetting a lot of shorts recently to have some current styles I can recommend to you guys so I asked my stylist to send me a few options in this trunk. I think you can tell from the look on my face that I did NOT love these. LOL!!!

These are the classic Levi’s Cutoff Shorts and they’re also a size 6. I like the wash and the idea of them, but they are too tight plus they’re just too short for my comfort level with a 2″ inseam. (They’re also cut kind of high in the back of the leg.)

They definitely fit looser on the model on the website and I like the laid-back vibe so if I were 10 years younger, I’d probably ask to try these in the 8, but I’m almost 45 and I think a 2″ inseam is pushing it. (Yes, I realize that some of you think my 4″ inseams are pushing it, lol!) I’m good with 3.5 to 4, but a girl’s gotta draw the line somewhere, and I think 3.5 is it for me right now.)

These dark wash cutoff denim shorts from BLANKNY fit well and are comfortable, but I don’t love that ultra dark wash. They have an nice high 12″ rise for those who are interested in that. These are the 28 so they run true to size.

These Kut from the Kloth Gidget Shorts were an immediate YES. I tried them on and loved the fit so I decided to keep them. I wore them all day and they didn’t bag out. SCORE!!!

The best part is, these come in a bunch of different denim washes and colors. I linked them all HERE. For size reference, I’m wearing the size 6.

also wearing: J.Crew sequined muscle tank & TB miller sandals

These have a 4″ inseam and a 22.5″ leg opening, which I’ve learned is about perfect for me. If you like longer shorts, check out the Kut from the Kloth Catherine style.

These silky jogger shorts are kind of fun, but not really my style. They remind me too much of pajamas.

Remember when I did my 2017 Spring Fashion Forecast back in January and we all scratched our heads over The Robe (see #10)? Well, look what I found in my trunk!

This Madewell Robe Jacket got mixed feedback on my Insta Story when I did my unboxing over there, but I think it could be a fun work wear piece for someone who gets cold indoors and wants an alternative to cardigans and blazers. The material is a little bit heavier than I would prefer, but it’s kind of a cool print. I like that the floral is different from so much of what we’re seeing right now. (Have you noticed how all the florals in the stores look alike?) For size reference, this is the medium, although I think I could take a small.

also wearing: Topshop cami (old; this is similar) & Paige Verdugo ankle skinnies

Both this fuchsia bell sleeve top and the tapestry pumps came in my trunk.

also wearing: Stella & Dot Dalilah Pendant // Paige Verdugo ankle skinnies

This top is cute, but the neckline is kind of high for my liking. The material is also a little bit scratchy, truth be told. That said, I think it could be cute for work wear as long as the sleeves wouldn’t annoy you. This is the medium, for reference.

Some of you may remember these shoes from my last trunk. They were too big, so my stylist hunted down my size and sent them in this trunk. It pains me to tell you that I sent them back. They are sooo cute and I love them for their style and comfort (I already have them in white, blue, and black) but I just don’t see myself wearing these very much… maybe if they were on sale, but not at $129.

These blue suede sandals, however, are keepers. I’ve been trying to add some color to my shoe wardrobe since I have soooo many neutrals, and these are the perfect pop against white jeans. They will look great with tops in the pink/orange/yellow families as well as neutrals and even some shades of blue and green. Best of all, these are on sale 33% off! (FYI, I wouldn’t roll my jeans with these, but I wanted you to see the ankle strap.)

I already have these in the oatmeal color so I can vouch for how comfortable they are. The suede under the toes is so soft and cozy, the chunky heel provides plenty of stability, and the ankle strap keeps them on my feet so I don’t have to worry about stepping out of them like I do with pumps.

I can’t wait to wear these — I’ll probably find a way to incorporate them into my church outfit this Sunday.

Well, that’s a wrap! I got so many goodies in this box, I could have definitely kept more than I did. I think the key with a service like Trunk Club is to stick with it for a few tries until your stylist starts to get the hang of your style and what looks good on you. My trunks keep getting better and better.

  1. Love the blue sandals! Thank you for styling these shorts, and giving us the lengths, I’m the same, I have to find that perfect length, not too short or long, that are age-appropriate (54 here)

  2. That was a fun post to read! I liked the Madewell top as it has a lot of character and reminded of a little gem you would find only in a boutique. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Great trunk! It really surprised me that I liked the black top and sandals so much -neither are what I’d typically be drawn to at all. I do see why you returned them though. That’s definitely not your everyday type of top. 😉
And those blue sandals! Love!!! Can’t wait to see how you style them!

  4. Hi! Curious if there’s an age cap for the frayed hem shorts? I did get some jeans with the frayed hem but for some reason, at 54, I’m feeling like I might look like I’m trying too hard?! I want a denim short, don’t love the rolled hem look on my leg, think that a regular hem looks wrong and don’t want them bermuda style……
I also have the SE shoes in nude…love them!

      1. Shelly…I just bought the Loft single cuff frayed short that Cyndi recommended to you on Memorial weekend and love the length and fit and I’m 55 yrs. old and I think they look fine. It is hard to find shorts right now for our age without having to wear the bermuda style. I bought the Loft shorts in the darker wash. I believe the ones Cyndi linked to are the lighter ones. But, the dark aren’t really dark. They were on 40% off too.

  5. So fun to see your expressions in some of the pics 🙂 Thanks for giving us ideas and taking a lot of the work out of it for those of us who aren’t so great putting pieces together. Have a good weekend

  6. What fun! I expected you to keep the black top. And the multi colored shoes, I think you would get a lot of wear out of them. Longer shorts for me.

  7. Great post. Loved everything but the black top. Sorry’! Think there is just too much going on fir my taste ( ties, cold shy, side slits). That said you look great in it.
Need to look into the Madewell top.

  8. So sad you are returning the SE pumps — unique and gorgeuos and timeless!! The blue sandals are beautiful, but that style is all over the blogs… Went to a huge graduation event where 80% of the ladies had some version that sandal on! Well, you always pick the loveliest things, so maybe I should order the colorful pumps, and keep my mouth shut! LOVE your blog; keep the good advice coming 🙂

    1. I hear where you’re coming from. 🙂 And you are right about those sandals – they are way overdone right now – but I can’t help it, I love them. ???? I think they’re really flattering and easy to dress up or down. And I’ve gone overboard on pumps recently — I just got the white and the gulf blue suede. But all things being equal, those pumps are amazing! In fact, another blogger friend of mine just went out and bought them after she saw them on my Insta Story. Maybe they’ll go on sale…

  9. I love the pumps and the blue sandals! I understand the price point though! I live vicariously through you with the heels after ankle surgery I’m a flats girl.

  10. You definitely got some cute items in this Trunk!
When I was your age, I would have worn the 4″ inseam too but not now. Also, even though the fushia top as well as the tie sleeve tops are gorgeous, the sleeves would not have worked for me- I’d been either getting them wet or dirty! Ugh! Loved the tapestry pumps!

  11. Loved the tapestry shoes and the Madewell top. Great ideas! Love the trunk club openings and the different ideas they send.

  12. Thanks Jo-Lynne for modelling all those outfits for us. Did not like the red top or the robe. Sorry. Loved the Peekaboo Top and the
jeans. The blue sandals are to die for, soo cute, It just pops with the white jeans!!! You look fabulous. Thanks for keeping it coming.

  13. Oh…that black shirt….I would have found that so hard to send back! You looked amazing in it….
The white blouse was really cute and wearable for every day, so I definitely think you made an awesome choice keeping that one!
These posts are so helpful. I used to find myself buying items that were not going to get much use because they were just too pretty, but since I have started following your blog, I have realized that it’s wiser and way more fun to buy things that get a lot of wear.
    Thanks ????

    1. Yes, it’s hard sometimes, but I hate seeing things hang in my closet and never get worn so I’m trying to be more strategic about what I keep. Plus, with this blog being my job, there is always something new to try… if I kept everything I tried on and liked, I’d never wear them all! LOL.

  14. Great post…photos and commentary. Very helpful. I love your hair fixed this way! God bless you

  15. I like the robe jacket but think you need the small. I love the way it goes with the white jeans and the black block heel sandals. I looked up the sandal in the taupe/white too. Soooo cute.

  16. I also loved the black top on you!! The blue shoes are fun but I couldn’t wear that high of a heel.
