Trunk Club Unboxing + Try On Haul

Alright, you guys, I set out to do one try-on haul per week, and so far, so good! This one is shorter than some, and part of it is a Trunk Club unboxing, but you know… same thing. I was asked to try on some things from Target, and I will see what I can find. I don’t usually shop for clothes there, so let me know what brands are good.

Okay, let’s dive right in.

Mid-January Try-On Haul

I already told you about a couple of sweaters I ordered from Bloomingdale’s. Well, they arrived, and one is a hit and one is a bit of a miss… although I like the miss, it’s just not quite right for me. It may work for some of you, though.

This sweater is chenille, which is a plus right off the bat. I love this uber-soft material. I also love the wide v-neckline — particularly flattering on those of us with wider shoulders and a larger chest. The pattern in the knit is pretty, as are the flecks of blue in the ivory yarn.

Unfortunately, it’s cut a generously through the midsection and a little longer than my ideal. I also had to order a medium because smalls were sold out, and ultimately I think that’s the problem. I would probably love this sweater in a small. Oh, well. Right now the only size left is a large, but if that’s your size, you may want to snag it because the price is amazing — $29 when you add to cart, and shipping is free for Loyallists and ShopRunner members

Also, these Good American skinny jeans are 25% off.

This next sweater is the hit. I love the loose, open weave; the contrast stitching at neck, cuffs, and hem; and the boxy but drapey fit. I know not everyone likes the shorter styles, but they work well on my short-waisted figure. Also, the raglan sleeves are flattering. I can see wearing this sweater well into springtime. I’m wearing a small, for reference.

I also ordered this camel coat from Bloomingdale’s. I believe I shared that I wanted to replace my camel coat with one that has cooler undertones. I like the color of this a lot, and the fit is okay, but the quality isn’t quite where I want it, so I think it’s going back. I do have a camel coat, and even if the color isn’t perfect, I love the fit, and the quality is pretty good, so I’m going to hold off on this purchase for a while.

That said, if you’re looking for a good price on a classic wool blend coat, this one is worth a look. It’s under $130 when you add it to your bag, and I’m wearing a 6 for reference.

I also ordered a couple of cardigans from Nordstrom to try out. This first one is a BP. cardigan, and I’m not loving the quality, but the navy and ivory stripes are cute. It’s true to size; I’m wearing a small.

I also ordered this grey multi stripe cardigan, and this one I love, but it’s selling out fast. I don’t know why I don’t have more angles, but I also did a full outfit shoot with this cardigan, so I’ll have that for you early next week.

I’ve been linking to this Bernardo leather jacket as an alternative to mine all season, so I finally decided to order it and try it on for you guys. I ordered the burgundy in case I want to keep it. I wear my other two moto jackets so much, I thought it might make sense to add one in another color to my closet.

At first glance, I like this a lot, but I’m afraid the wide lapels further emphasize my broad shoulders and large chest. I also wonder if it’s a size too big. I have a medium in my other Bernardo leather jacket, but this one seems a little more roomy. It zips easily, for one thing, and the arms and shoulders seem a little big. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.

I know the textbook answer is, “If in doubt, do without…” but sometimes I hem and haw about something and end up keeping it and loving it. So… what do you think? Keep? Return? Or size down?

And this is one random Amazon Fashion purchase. I have more coming, but this tunic arrived yesterday so I threw it on and snapped these pictures. I am always a bit skeptical when ordering clothes from Amazon, to be honest, but this tunic seems like decent quality for the price point, and it’s surprisingly flattering. I’m wearing it with jeans, but I supposed you could wear it with leggings. It comes in several other fun colors and neutrals, and for reference, I sized up to a medium. Best of all, it’s only $22!

Okay, onto my Trunk Club unboxing!

January Trunk Club Unboxing

It was a small box this month, and the selections were a little all over the place, but tis the season! I’m sure their inventory is getting picked over, just the same as the regular retailers.

Because I loved and kept a Nordstrom Signature sweater last month, my stylist sent me two more to try out. Oh… she’s a temptress!!! This brand does really good cashmere, and since it’s a store brand, the prices aren’t as high as, say, Vince and Theory, but the quality is comparable as far as I can tell.

I wanted to love this first one, but I don’t care for the way the stripes lay on me.

This next one, though… this one is tempting. On first glance, it’s a basic navy sweater. But upon closer investigation, it has some really great details in addition to the impeccable quality, and it’s 40% off, but still an investment piece. Unfortunately I probably can’t justify another one this winter.

I love the casual laid-back vibe of this outfit — pairing the luxe cashmere sweater with the mid-wash blue jeans and white sneakers. The juxtaposition between the luxe sweater, distressed jeans and white kicks… well, I’m just diggin’ this look. I just wish they would have made the neckline a little more open; I’m not crazy about the high crewneck.

Also, here it is with a necklace and loafers for a more traditional look.

Now, this twist sleeve top is really cute and also a great transition piece as we move into spring. It comes in 5 colors and just went on sale for $35.40! This one is a keeper, for sure. I’m wearing a small, for reference.

These open toe booties also came in my box, and they’re fun for a night out, but they were too loose on my feet.

Taryn Rose Helene Peep Toe Bootie

Finally, this BP. Plush Fleece Coat is fun and cozy, but it seems geared towards the younger set. The fit and quality is a little lacking, and I’m not loving the color, but it might make a fun gift for a teenager in your life!

And that’s a wrap! I always love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on that leather jacket since it’s been on my wishlist forever. I think it looks nice on you, and if it’s too big, I can’t tell from these pics. Did you get rid of that gorgeous, perfect fitting burgundy jacket you styled a couple years ago? That’s when I decided I needed one 😉
And I love that navy sweater! It would be hard to let that one go, lol.

    1. You know, I think I finally got rid of it when we moved. I didn’t wear it a ton, and the leather didn’t wear well. It was starting to look faded on the shoulders – I fear from hanging on the hanger without getting used enough. I’m honestly not sure why I didn’t wear it more. It was more of a bomber, so it looked really casual, which you would think would work well for me, but the moto styling appeals to me more, and it wasn’t as fitted as the ones I have now. It was a gorgeous coat, though. I hope someone is using it and enjoying it!

  2. I clicked on the link for the camel coat and saw that it also comes in scarlet…I’m smitten. What do you think? Not as versatile as the camel version?

    1. Love the scarlet as well. I’ve been wanting a red coat since forever. I think red goes with a lot (think navy, black, grey, all denim, even purple)…..I’m thinking on it…. Color is so cheery in the winter.

    2. I have a red coat, and I love it. I should wear it more. My daughter just asked for one for Christmas and she wears it a lot. It’s adorable on her. I think it’s very versatile – especially if you wear a lot of neutrals. It does have a dressy look about it, so it needs to be something you’ll wear. I think i don’t wear mine more b/c it feels dressy. Mine is also shorter – more of a peacoat. Caroline’s is like this one.

  3. I liked several of the pieces. I think the burgundy jacket looks great, but zipped, it does look roomy on you. I also like the navy sweater a lot but I think I would also have a problem with the high crew neck. Definitely will be checking out the Amazon tunic. 😊 I always love these unboxings!

  4. I like the tunic from Amazon Fashion purchase looks like a fun piece to wear. I just bought a twisted sleeve top yesterday looking forward to wearing it.

  5. Love the try on sessions.. the Moto jacket is nice but it does look a little roomy in the shoulder area.. I’d try the next size down then decide which ever feels better. That navy sweater with the white sneakers is a great look. Are you sure you don’t want to keep it?? The burgundy jacket would look nice over it too.. just a thought.
Have a great weekend. Waiting to see what we get weather wise .

  6. Lots of nice  things.  I really like the color of that moto  jacket.  It doesn’t look too big on you to me but I don’t like my jackets super fitted so I may not be the best judge.  I like that twist sleeve top.  I live in North Texas so it does stay fairly cool through Feb/Mar but it IS Texas so … do you think it’s too warm of a piece for us Texans to buy?  🤷‍♀️

  7. The tan coat looks great on you. I tried the same one on last weekend at Macy’s. It wasn’t for me.  I love the twist sweater and the Amazon Fashion sweater. I haven’t gotten a few things from there. I love daily ritual brand. You or Cyndi introduced me to that one. Thanks have a great weekend

  8. Lots of cute finds! I think the burgundy jacket is a tad big in the shoulders. Good find on Amazon…looks comfy. I agree the crew neck is high on the navy sweater, but would be fine with a scarf.  As always…love your style😉

  9. So much fun!  I think the burgundy moto jacket is too big on you.  I really liked the striped sweater that you aren’t crazy about.  I think it is very flattering on you.  I noticed that the stitching on your white sneakers looks white, but on the Nordstrom site it looks brownish.  I hope y’all don’t end up getting hammered with snow.  We are expecting severe weather early tonight, with winds up to 60 mph.  Hopefully, nothing will fly around.  Enjoy the rest of your day!

  10. I love the leather jacket on you. You should get it. Great post. Love the sweaters too. I just don’t think we are going to have winter here in Savannah.

  11. Hey Jolynne! Great try on session. I think the burgundy moto jacket is a great color and looks so good on you, but the shoulders look like they are too droopy which makes the sleeves too long. I bet a smaller size would be perfect! I was wondering if you could do a post at some time on how you fix your bob? It always looks great and I’m wondering how you keep the heavier side from always falling into your face? Is it styling, product, backcombing, or you just have a great growth pattern? Thanks!

  12. Your instincts are right. The burgundy jacket is too big. It doesn’t line up with your shoulders and zipped it looks loose.
I really liked the camel coat on you. The longer length and slim cut is flattering. Too bad the quality usn’t there.
I’m done buying sweaters! I’ve switched my thinking to spring. I do like the tunic from Amazon though. Very cute and would be flattering with leggings.

  13. I’m not crazy about the width of the lapels on the moto jacket and I LOVE moto jackets. Even in a size small, I still wonder if you won’t quite be happy with it, Jo-Lynne. And I agree, if you don’t love it, don’t keep it. Love the navy cashmere sweater. I tend to avoid crew necks but I’m tempted to toss it in my cart. What white sneakers are you wearing in the pics? I always avoid white sneakers because they get dirty so easily, but I do like the look with distressed jeans, white sneaks and a dark sweater. And where spring comes and it’s still cold, throwing a lighter color sweater on will create a “springy” look.

  14. Ooh I love the white open weave Bloomingdales sweater – great texture. Looks so pretty on you! I’m long waisted so I wonder if it would be even boxier on me? Tempted! I just bought that same Amazon fashion tunic in the blue color. Supposed to get it today. It looks super cute on you with jeans and Ug boots!
Hope you’re surviving the weather back there. I’m so thankful we are supposed to get to 75 today – our gardeners are out back now mowing and trimming – it’ll be great to get my puppies outside! 🐶😊☀️🐶 They’ve been a little stir crazy staying inside the last week with all the rain we’ve had.
    Have a blessed Saturday!

    1. That sounds lovely, but I honestly think I’d miss winter. Unfortunately we’re going to get mostly rain tonight and tomorrow, and THEN the temps are going to dip tomorrow night, and it’s all going to ice over. Isn’t that lovely? Sheesh! Sometimes I think I should just move to New England so I get real winter with SNOW. Unfortunately their spring is non-existant, and it’s bad enough here, so I’ll stay put. I’m going to Maine next weekend, so I will finally see snow!

      1. I’m sure the view of fresh white snow is so pretty outside your windows!! I’ll pray for more of that for you and less of the rain! 🙏 🤞 We’re planning a weekend trip next month up to our local mountains (Big Bear) to enjoy the snow. Looking forward to it! . ❄️ I think the part of our So Cal winter I enjoy the most is that it’s still cold in the morning and at night so we’ll turn in the fireplace and snuggle under cozy blankets on the couch, but during the day the sun is warm (not hot though by any means) but it allows me to still throw on my flip flops with my jeans and a long sleeved tee to run errands. Right now I’m standing  in line at Nektar waiting to get a green juice and in front of me are two girls with jeans, knee high boots and short sleeved tees – one has on a sleeveless vest (super cute)…..hahah- they have no idea I’m looking over their outfits! 😂 Most of the guys around me are in shorts but to me it’s still too chilly for that kind of clothing! That’s boys for ya! 😉
Plan a trip for spring break out to CA!! I’d love to meet up with you! 💕🌴

        1. Both my husband and I grew up in So Calif and still have family and friends there and we lived in Big Bear for 14 years! We have so many great memories of our time living there!

          1. @Mary Craig….what a small world! We love Big Bear – love the little town. I had an uncle who had a cabin there near the lake, so when I was a child my family went up there a couple times a year and I learned to ski there. Now I go up there with my husband and sons- just an easy 2+ hour drive and we’re in the snow! 😊❄️

  15. I love the moto jacket, but it does look a tad large even zipped. I really like the Amazon find. It’s a keeper.

  16. I really like the striped cashmere sweater on you, it fits you so cute even if you don’t think so! I love the color of the leather jacket but agree it’s a little big on you.  I really enjoy your try on sessions and curious to see what you find at Target. I definitely find it to be hit and miss there.

  17. Target can be hit or miss but try Knox Rose and Universal Threads. I’ve bought these brands and have had great luck. Plus you might find some fun stuff in between. I tried on some cute sweaters at Old Navy today . Came home with a cream textured one that’s a good translation piece. Also got a cute navy and off white sweatshirt:)  I usually only buy there when there’s a sale but I couldn’t resist the sweater lol

  18. I bought the Moto jacket in black back in he fall. They were all sold out of smalls then so I got the petite medium. It seems to be ok. I rarely zipper it. I think we  have similar builds  I’m 5’4  I did notice that it was flaring out in the back last time I wore it but I think the petite helps the shoulder issue and sleeve length is fine. I don’t usually wear petites   I’m curious to know your final decision. I was concerned about the flaps too when it arrived but seems ok I guess

  19. The color of the moto jacket is beautiful! It looks a little loose on you. I would size down, especially if you will be wearing thinner tops with the jacket. I love the burgundy color and may check into getting one too!

  20. I agree Moto is a bit too big. Love the colour. Other concerns is trend, are you going to love it by fall?  The final green blazer …oh my that is nota good fit .  I am not sure about the twist sleeve top, what is it that makes it a keeper for sure. It looks like a lot of fabric on the arms.  I will be copying the navy sweater look, I love when I can shop my closet and copy your looks!  Awesome unpacking I love these!

    1. I like the twist sleeve top. 🙂 I think it’s cute, and the sleeves are a fun detail. I hear ya on the moto. It’s going back for now. I can always look for one next fall if I still want one.

  21. Some cool finds! The Moto jacket does seem too large on you and doesn’t really fit you like your others. You have tempted me with that Amazon tunic! I am looking for spring tops but I might get one to replace a tunic I have been wanting to put in my donation pile. Decisions… Love these posts it is always fun to see what you find and how it fits in you since we are similar in height and size 😃

  22. I’m not sure I’m the best person to comment as I think you can wear just about anything and look great!   Your broad shoulders (mine are too) are not disproportionate at all.  In my opinion, your clothes hang beautifully because of them.  You have good posture too and that helps with how clothes look on anyone.  So, you could keep any number of these pieces but if you won’t grab for them regularly, without hesitation, pass.  Personally, that navy sweater would be a workhorse for me!  I think I’ll scoot over there.😂  Love these try on sessions big time.  Thank you!

  23. Jo-Lynne,
This is another great post. I enjoy seeing the different styles and pieces on you. I really want to try that consulting session you mentioned recently about the fact that fashion is about math/measurements. I’ve lost that post. Could you send me the link again?? As always I look forward to your next post! Thank you!
    Courtney

  24. I think photo one of the burgundy leather jacket looks perfect fit. Photo 2 looks big in the shoulders and arms and photo 3 zipped looks inbetween. I’d order size down and see what the difference is. If still you feel in doubt it’s probably not right fit one. It looks good on you though and love the color. I’m not thrilled with any of the trunk box but just me. However I like twist sleeve shirt. 🙂

  25. What color are you wearing in the Twist Knot Sleeve Crewneck Top by 1. State?  I really like this one and would love to try it!  Thanks!

  26. I really like your trunk unboxing posts.
I order a lot on line and I end up returning far more then I keep.
Most shopping sites don’t give you enough info on fit but the most frustrating thing is the  lack of quality. I find price does not necessarily mean quality. I’m glad you are pointing this out.

  27. My vote is for a smaller size in the moto jacket. I think you look great in them and the burgundy is such a great color for fall and winter. Trying so hard not to buy a bunch of sweaters as well, as most are on sale if you can find your size. 🙂 Trying to save some $$ for spring/summer!

  28. I always enjoy your try-on sessions.
My favorite piece is the Twist Knot Sleeve Top. I love transition pieces like this. They can be worn most of the year where I live. And this “basic with a twist” is perfect for my lifestyle.
I can see this going from daytime to dinner out, too.

  29. Love that gray striped sweater but my size is sold out 🙁
Can I ask about Moto jackets? I have one but heard they are on their way out? I am still seeing some in stores. The tunic from Amazon looks like a fun piece.

    1. That’s just a prediction – and that doesn’t mean that with the flip of a switch, all moto jackets will be passe. It just means we may start seeing less of them in stores. A black leather jacket is a classic wardrobe piece that never really goes “out” — even with moto details, it can be a classic. It depends on how extreme the moto detils are, and your general style aesthetic. If you always dress edgy, it makes sense and will always look good on you. I will keep wearing my black one, for sure. I will have to see how it all plays out as far as my suede one, but I still think it has a classic look to it, and it is super flattering so I’m not writing it off yet. 🙂

      1. Thanks for your reply, I agree with you about Moto jackets. I think they are cute, stylish and classic. You always look fabulous in yours and I will still wear mine too because it’s a classic piece.
