TRY-ON HAUL: LOFT, NORDSTROM, EVERLANE + MADEWELL

Good morning and happy Saturday! Today’s try-ons are a bit of a mish-mosh, mostly odds and ends from a few orders that didn’t all come in before last Saturday’s try-on haul.

I meant to stop into a couple of stores this week to fill out this post, but that didn’t happen, so I don’t have a ton of things to show you, but I’m sharing what I have.

Let’s dive right in!

Fall 2019 Try On Haul: Everlane, LOFT, Nordstrom & Madewell // Fall Fashion for Women over 40

TRY-ON HAUL: LOFT, NORDSTROM, EVERLANE + MADEWELL

As a reminder, I’m 5’5″ and about 140# with a short-waisted, slightly hourglass shape. Depending on the brand, I typically wear 6 or 8 (28 or 29) in pants and jeans, small in tops, and 8 in dresses and coats. I don’t think I have any shoes this week, but those are usually size 8 as well.

Everything I’m featuring today is TTS (true to size) unless I say otherwise. Links and descriptions are below the pictures.

LOFT V-Neck Twist Hem Top (size S) // This top is really, really soft and so comfy to throw on and go. I’ve always been a fan of the twist front because it’s a fun detail and it takes all the guesswork out of the front tuck.

This top also has a flattering v-neck, and it comes in black as well as this pretty pink. Best of all, it’s 40% off plus an additional 15% off with a LOFT Rewards membership!

LOFT Hoodie Sweater (size S) // I’m clearly a fan of this color! I shared this sweater in a blog post earlier this week, but I had these try-on shots too so I figured I’d include them.

It’s another very soft and cozy top, more of a sweater, but with the hood for a sporty vibe. It runs TTS and is also 40% off plus 15% with a LOFT Rewards membership.

LOFT Leopard Print V-Neck Sweater (size S) // I had my eye on this leopard print sweater for a few weeks and finally decided to order it. I heard from a few sources that it was scratchy, but it’s so cute, I just had to see for myself.

The verdict? It is a bit scratchy, but not enough to bother me. I’m not very sensitive, though. What I didn’t like is that the background is more grey than ivory, and it just looked kind of dingy to me.

On the plus side, it has a nice close-to-the-body fit without being clingy — very flattering. I think it would look really nice with black coated jeans and black boots.

Everlane The ReCashmere Stroopwafel Crew (sand; size small) // Everlane offered to send me a couple of their newest items to try (#yesplease) and I chose this “stroopwafel crew” from their new ReCashmere line, along with a scarf that isn’t online just yet.

Funny story: One of our good friends is from the Netherlands, and whenever they visit his parents, they bring stroopwafels back as gifts for all their friends. I can’t wait to tell them about this sweater!

The ReCashmere line is made from 60% recycled cashmere and 40% merino wool. It’s just as soft and beautiful as their 100% Grade-A cashmere, but with half the carbon footprint. Yes, it costs a bit more, but it will last many years, and I often get requests for more sustainable fashion, so I know some of you will really love this one!

It has a relaxed shape and tapered sleeves, and the waffle texture along with rib detailing along the neck, cuffs, and hem is so pretty.

also wearing: AG Prima skinnies with Jeffrey Campbell booties (sold out) and Lucky Brand earrings

Everlane ReCashmere Textured Turtleneck Sweater in Heather Aqua (size S) // I also happened to order a few Everlane sweaters to try from their Nordstrom Pop-In Shop.

This is another sweater from their ReCashmere line, so it’s also 60% recycled cashmere and 40% merino wool. I like the fit of this sweater better than the crewneck, with the step hem and more relaxed fit through the body.

Plus that ribbed turtleneck is perfect. It’s more of a tall mock neck (you don’t fold it over) and it isn’t too snug. (I hate to feel choked by a turtleneck, but I do like the extra warmth they provide when they’re a little more relaxed like this one.)

Love, love, LOVE this sweater! It also comes in black and ivory… In fact, I ordered the black too because I wanted to try both, and returns are free at Nordstrom, so why not?

Everlane ReCashmere Textured Turtleneck Sweater in Black (size S) // Love this sweater just as much or maybe a bit better in the black, but I already have a black cashmere turtleneck sweater that I love and wear a lot in the winter, so I think it makes most sense to keep this one in the blue. I also don’t have anything that blue color; all my blue sweaters are navy.

However, if YOU are looking for a good quality cozy black turtleneck sweater to fill a hole in your closet, this is a good one! Highly recommend.

Also, while Everlane does not offer free returns, you can use their Happy Returns Bar if you have a location near you. I discovered that mine is super convenient — right where I like to park and enter the mall. Just look it up on their site to fine one near you!

Everlane The Cashmere Rib Boatneck Sweater (size S) // I also ordered this ribbed boatneck sweater from Nordstrom in the heather grey and pale blue heather, but I don’t love the fit on this. It’s just too short for me, unfortunately.

Happily, returns to Nordstrom are free, so these are going back.

Halogen Scoop Neck Woven Shell (size S) // Okay, moving on from sweaters . . . I ordered this woven shell in both snake and leopard to try. The snake came first, so I only have pictures of it, but you can at least get sizing info. On the plus side, it has nice wide bra-friendly straps, and it’s not cut low under the arms at all.

Unfortunately it’s a little longer than I prefer, and it’s also a tad snug across the chest, but I don’t think I should size up because that would make it even longer. I would say this is a great option for those of you who are taller or long-waisted.

It also comes in leopard, ivory, and black.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Wool Blend Reefer Coat (size 6) // This coat was featured in yesterday’s post, but I wanted to take some pictures with it buttoned up because let’s face it, that’s usually how we wear our coats. I also think it’s more flattering when it’s buttoned up — especially since it’s a little big on me.

It really is a gorgeous coat and makes such a fun statement. I’ll try the size 4 and keep you posted, but now that it’s buttoned, I think the 6 is the right size. That’s the size I have in my camel colored one, and I’ve always liked the fit on that.

KENDALL + KYLIE Plaid Double Breasted Coat (size S) // I ordered this coat as another option for the Nordstrom sponsored post yesterday, but it didn’t come in time for my shoot.

It’s a little longer than the RL coat, and it’s double-breasted instead of single-breasted. In general, single-breasted coats look better on women with large chests, so I prefer the fit of the first one. Still, the colors on this one are gorgeous, warmer fall tones for those who prefer that, and it’s very comfortable.

It also just went on sale!!! It’s currently 25% off, bringing it to just under $200 — not a bad price for a fully lined wool blend coat.

Treasure & Bond Sydney Leather Convertible Hobo // I also just ordered this hobo because I love the tan color — such a nice neutral. I carry my Everlane tote a ton because I love the light taupe color, but sometimes I want a more refined shoulder bag.

This one is a gorgeous soft pebbled leather, and it has an easy snap closure. The price is great at $169.

I generally gravitate to Tory Burch and R Minkoff and sometimes Kate Spade, but those prices are getting up there, and when you go with a Nordstrom brand like Treasure & Bond, you’re getting similar quality at a much better value because you aren’t paying for the brand name.

Why is the Football Team on the Band Field Tee (size M) // Sorry, this sold out, but I had to show you… isn’t it the cutest!?! #bandmomhere

If you like the fit of this tee (it has some shaping through the waist, which is nice), then the brand does have other graphic tees that I think are really fun. I recommend sizing up — I have the medium.

I also found two more on Amazon… Both come in multiple color options. Click the pictures to shop!

And this one…

And finally, a pair of jeans from Madewell . . .

Madewell 10″ High-Rise Skinny Jeans in Eclipse Wash (size 29) // These Madewell skinnies have nailed that perfect “cool girl” off-black wash. It’s a great alternative to blue denim for casual looks, and they have a nice traditional skinny fit with a 10″ rise.

They come in regular (28 1/2″ inseam), petite, and tall sizes, so there are lots of options for different inseam lengths; and they’re made at a Fair Trade Certified Saitex factory, so you can feel good about that.

I really wish I’d tried them on with the t-shirt above; they would look great together!

also wearing: T.La Vicky Thermal Waffle Tunic (size small; currently on sale for AnthroPerks members) and Lucky Brand necklace

And that’s a wrap!

If I missed any sizing notes or other pertinent info, feel free to ask in the comments.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. Such a cute tee. Ha. I dont really need anything now until it gets colder. IF it gets colder. But loft has great sales.

  2. The snake print shell is out of stock in the small — so just send yours my way! I love that look as a first layer under a jacket or cardigan!

  3. Jo-Lynne—I love these try-on hauls but they always get me in trouble! I just ordered the Everlane turtleneck from Nordstrom and I’m trying not to order the stroopwafel crew! I love Everlane! Thank you for doing all this work for us! Enjoy the weekend!

  4. Love the band tee….very cute. And I really like the snake top as well, the coats, well, honestly everything. I’m trying to lose a few pounds after being on bedrest this summer with the broken hip and all the after care of getting back into life,so I’m trying, notice I say, trying, not to buy anything right now.  Lol. It’s hard not to buy when you see cute things.  But the weight has to go.

    Have a great weekend.  Enjoy

  5. We’re having summer in So CA right now (temps in the high 80s- next week 90s ☀️🔥🔥) I’m craving sweater weather, but probably won’t really see it until November.
I like the coral tie front LOFT hoodie the best and it looks soft. I have 75$ in loft gift cards but they can only be used in-store …..I’ll have to drag myself in there to take a look.
    Happy Saturday!

  6. they are out of the snake print – wouldn’t you know it?

wondered if a cardigan would look too bulky – I really do like the leopard print but not

sure about a cardigan on top.

May have to choose between Loft leopard cardigan and this one – which is the best choice for a relaxed lifestyle – a lot like yours without kids.

thanks for all of the work you do to help keep us stylish and up to date! Alice

  7. Jo-Lynn.
How about showing some tops that also come in petite sizes for those of us who are vertically challenged.  At 5’ tall, I am rarely able to wear the tops that you show.  Thanks for keeping us informed so that we don’t have to do our own research.

    1. Hi Barbara, I’m vertical challenged as well and it’s hard to find petite sizes. However, Loft offers petites in several of their tops. WHBM, Chico’s, Talbots, Nordstrom, and Macy’s offer petites as well. Old Navy and Christopher & Banks have a small petite section too. Does anyone know of other stores carrying petites?

  8. As I’ve said before, I love your try-on hauls!! Thanks so much for taking the time and all the good ideas and items!!

  9. I just have a question.  I have noticed and thought about lit many times….often you have a ring on your left hand that is not your wedding rings.  Why? Lol just curious

  10. Haahaa! As a Football mom, I even love that tee – too funny! 🙂 Just ordered a pair of plaid pumps and a snakeskin wedge. Slowly adding to my fall wardrobe!
