Try-On Haul: Talbots, Amazon & Nordstrom

Happy Friday, friends! I’m trying to get back to my usual Friday Try-Ons, and I have some fun fashion finds from Talbots, Amazon, and yes, Nordstrom.

I’m sure many of you are Nordstromed out, but things do continue to trickle in, and I figure if they’re in stock, I might as well share them with you!

But I also want to get back to a better balance of content, so I’m trying to find some nice transition pieces from other retailers too. And I’ve been asked for a splurge vs save handbag post, so I’m working on that for next week. If you have particular brands or retailers you’d like me to include in that post, let me know!

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds-ish, with a slight hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

Talbots Try-Ons

These items were all on sale when I ordered, but right now only a few are 30% off. I always recommend waiting for a sale to purchase at Talbots because they happen often.

FYI, Talbots orders are taking several weeks to come in, so if you like any of these pieces and have a Talbots local to you, I recommend ordering online and opting for Free Curbside Pickup. I wish I had done that.

Talbots Slub Cotton Stripe Sweater $79.50

This is a really nice transition piece. It’s very lightweight so you can start wearing it on mild summer nights, but it will carry you into fall and look great layered under a utility jacket.

I really like the button detail on the shoulder and the boat neck. I tried to show you here.

The fabric is 70% cotton, 30% polyester; and you can machine wash it and lay it flat to dry. It runs true to size; I’m in the small. It also comes in petite, plus, and plus petite sizes.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: AG Farrah skinnies (40% off at Zappos; more sizes at Evereve) with Tory Burch Emmy sandals

Talbots Classic Casual Jacket $139

Speaking of a utility jacket to layer over that stripe sweater… this one caught my eye because it’s a little more refined than your typical utility jacket.

It has a traditional fit with an adjustable drawstring waist and 4 front flap pockets, and it’s made of a nice cotton/linen blend with just a bit of stretch, which keeps it lightweight and comfortable.

This jacket also comes navy, pink, beige, and white; and it runs true to size. (I’m wearing the small.) It also comes in petite, plus, and plus petite sizes.

VERDICT: Returning, only because I’m keeping the Caslon one from the #NSale. They’re different, but not different enough. I was thinking of ordering this in the beige, though.

Talbots Everyday Yoga Skort $64.50 + 30% off

Now, this skort IS on sale, and if you like it, I’d snap it right up because it’s perfect for wearing right now.

I think the tropical print is so fun for summer, and the material is a nice, soft cotton/spandex blend for comfort and ease of movement.

The under shorts are pretty long, so there is no riding up and they keep your thighs from rubbing together… if you know what I mean.

I paired it with this elevated scoop neck tee, which I’ve shared before. It’s pricey for a tee, but it’s high quality and has an impeccable fit. I thought it paired well with this skort.

It’s 30% off, if you missed it the first time. Size up; I’m wearing the medium in the tee.

Oh, and this skort has pockets too! It runs true to size; I’m wearing the small, and it also comes in petite.

VERDICT: Keeping! I need some fun pattern in my life.

also wearing: Frame Le Scoop T-Shirt (30% off) and Tory Burch Miller Sandals in Light Makeup

Talbots Chunky Knit Linen Sweater $89.50

This is an odd sweater. I thought it might be pretty in person, but I think it’s actually rather matronly. I will get in trouble for using that word, but it’s the best one I can think of.

I think it’s the fabric that gives it that matronly appearance, but it fits weirdly too. All the reviews seem to say the same thing.

It just runs really big, although I don’t think sizing down would really help. It’s just all kinds of off.

VERDICT: returning

also wearing: Madewell skinny jeans (these jeans are $19.87!!!!) with Tory Burch Miller Sandals in Light Makeup

Talbots Painterly Stripe Henley Midi Dress $89.50 + 30% off

Let’s end this Talbots portion on a high note. This dress is super cute. I absolutely love it.

It has such a nice long, slimming silhouette, it has just enough shaping through the length, dual side slits, and it fits well around the arms too.

Some of the Talbots midi dresses are a little short, but this one is a great length… at least on my 5’5″ frame.

The material is 57% Rayon, 38% Cotton, 5% Spandex; and you can machine wash and tumble dry. It runs true to size; I’m in the small. It also comes in petite, plus, and plus petite.

VERDICT: Keeping!

Amazon Fashion Try-Ons

Yidarton Leopard Print T-Shirt $15.99

I ordered this because it sort of resembles the ATM cheetah print tee that sold out the first day of the Nordstrom sale.

I say sort of because the quality is in a totally different league, but this is still a cute tee and gives you “the look” at a very affordable price point.

It fits nicely, a little boxy, but it front-tucks nicely. The sleeves are a good mid-length, as I know some don’t like the really short sleeves that so many tees have right now. It runs true to size and ships free with Prime. I’m wearing the small.

Also, these are the Kut from the Kloth Donna high rise ankle skinny jeans from the #NSale. They’re still fully stocked, and I really like these jeans.

The fit is great, very flattering, and they’re more lightweight than your typical denim. I wore them out to dinner last night, and even though we were outside in 80-degree weather, I was very comfortable.

Daily Ritual Cozy Boucle Coatigan Sweater $39

I ordered this to offer an option that is not part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, it’s pretty good for a $39 sweater.

It has an oversized fit, exaggerated drop sleeves, and slouchy front pockets. I like that the pockets are attached to the outside, so there’s no bulk on the inside of the sweater.

The material is 40% Nylon, 33% Acrylic, 25% Wool, 2% Spandex. It’s soft and stretchy and very lightweight while also feeling cozy.

The instructions say to hand wash, but I would throw this in the washer on the delicate cycle and lay it flat to dry.

It’s true to size, or you could size down for a closer fit; I’m in the small.

I styled this sweater with that Caslon white tee and the Kut from the Kloth Donna skinnies from the #NSale. I highly recommend grabbing these jeans if you haven’t already; sizes are going fast, and they’re really good.

Also, my Everlane loafer mules are on sale. I don’t know if that means they are discontinuing them or what, but I just ordered a black pair because I like them so much, and I’ve been wishing I had a black loafer. These run small; size up half.

also wearing: Caslon rounded v-neck tee with Kut from the Kloth skinnies (LOVE!) and Everlane loafer mules

Cable Stitch Mock Neck Cozy Sweater $59.50

Okay, now this was a huge disappointment — especially for that price. I couldn’t rip it off fast enough.

Besides the fact that it is ridiculously oversized, it feels really cheap to me.

I just don’t even know what else to say… just, no.

also wearing: Paige Verdugo skinnies (#NSale; still fully stocked!) with Sofft sneaker mules (#NSale; still fully stocked!)

A Few More #NSale Try-Ons

And yes, I do have a few more #NSale try-ons to share with you. These items are all well stocked, as of this morning.

Chelsea28 Sleeveless Midi Sweater Dress $69.90; After Sale: $119.00

This could be really cute if I sized up; I’m wearing the small and it is waaaaay too tight. I am sucking in my gut for all it’s worth so that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to post these pictures.

Sorry, I didn’t even bother to put on shapewear… but you can get the idea.

It has a really nice fit and feel, and the price is great. It would also layer nicely under a leather moto jacket, or a denim jacket for a more casual vibe.

I like it with these Vionic sandals (still fully stocked!) but I an also see it with booties — either these or these.

This dress also comes in grey, and it has a pretty wide range of sizes available — XXS=00, XS=0-2, S=4-6, M=8-10, L=12-14, XL=16 (14W), XXL=18 (16W).

Zella Live In Jogger Pants $38.90; After Sale: $59.00

As of yesterday, these were still fully stocked, but sizes are starting to go. I still wanted to share because they’re really good, especially considering the price.

These look and feel almost identical to my Vuori joggers, and they’re less than half the price.

Unlike the Vuori pair, I went with my true size small in these, and the fit is perfect. If they still have your size, and you’ve been wanting some good joggers, I highly recommend these.

Sorry, but this Indoorsy tee is sold out. If you’re watching for restocks, it is very thin and soft and lightweight, and it runs true to size. I sized up to the medium for a more roomy fit, but a small would have been just fine.

VERDICT: Keeping!

also wearing: Birkenstock Mayari in Antique Lace (LOVE!)

Sam Edelman Lambskin Leather Moto Jacket $229.90; After Sale: $370.00

This jacket was part of last year’s #NSale, and I just saw that they’ve brought it back. I don’t know if this is a recent addition to the sale, or if I missed it before, but it’s really good.

Most of the leather jackets in the sale are currently sold out, so I was thrilled to see this fully stocked… for now. I wouldn’t wait, if you’re wanting it and eligible to shop.

This jacket is made of a buttery-smooth lambskin leather, and it feels super luxe against the skin.

It has the traditional moto styling, but without the collar, which I like a lot. It’s sleeker and a little dressier this way. It runs true to size; I’m in the small.

also wearing: AG Angel flares with Chelsea28 tank and Sam Edelman leopard pumps

I feel like there was more, but I’m running late to an appointment this morning, so I will have to cut this off here. I do have more #NSale outfit inspo to share, but I was waiting to see how the restocks go. I know it’s frustrating when I link to things that aren’t available.

Have a fabulous Friday!

  1. I’m tempted by the Sam Edelman jacket, only I’d like it in black. I pretty much decided this morning, I was going to go for it, and now the black is sold out. Maybe it will be back. 🙂 I think we’re going to Nordstrom this weekend to get some jeans hemmed that I bought for myself and my husband, so maybe I’ll see if they have it in stock in the store. Otherwise, I’m debating about the Paul Green biker boots. 😀

Thanks for the try-ons! The brown sweater from Amazon that you couldn’t wait to rip off, reminds me of one I ordered from them last winter. Looked cute on the website, but when I tried it on, blech!

  2. Love these try-on hauls. I appreciate your candor and honesty.  I have a tough time with Talbots although this season I ordered 3 items from them, including the denim jacket w/stripe trim and the geranium knit shell you featured. There is something about the fit on many items across chest & front shoulder area, and sleeve setting that can lean toward a matronly (gasp) look & fit. That sweater you dislike is a prime example. I’m careful & picky with them. I cannot dispute their quality as it is typically quite good. Your honesty keeps us from making expensive fashion mistakes.  Love the stripe dress, gorgeous on you. Bulky tan sweater, not so much. Lots of fun items to ponder over this AM’s coffee. I need to pour another cup 😉

  3. The striped sweater and dress from Talbot’s are very pretty!  I agree that the green top just isn’t you.  While I like the leopard print tee from Amazon, I like the ones from Nordstrom better, so my fingers are crossed they are restocked.  I did order the Zella joggers via your link and found a Caslon tunic to go with them, and used a Notes to take the total price down a little more. Have a great day!

  4. Love the Talbots striped dress! Will have to check that one out! Thanks for your candor and transparency about showing us looks that work well and looks that don’t (wrong size dress). Seeing what doesn’t work is helpful too.
I had to laugh when you said “Nordstromed” out – can you read my mind? 😉
I realize its a big event for bloggers and its important for you. Just not into the hype but thats just me.

  5. Love this post! Your bootcut jeans are incredibly sexy!! It’s amazing how not having a style around for so long, can change your POV on its look. I’m drawn to the bootcut jean these days, especially for date night! Thank you

  6. I don’t usually love horizontal stripes, but that Talbots dress is super cute and looks so comfortable and easy!

  7. Nice Try on session… I was just thinking how many times you have to get dressed and undressed lol. Your hair still looks perfect! I got a few of the things arriving eventually… Now on the Amazon T did you keep or return? I did not see your verdict. Thank you Jo-Lynne.

  8. I don’t get excited about the Nordstrom sale because by the time I’m “allowed” to shop, everything on my wish list is sold out. ) I do enjoy these try-on posts though.

  9. When you try clothes on for us we get a much better idea of how they fit, not always well imo. The utility jacket looks great . The proportions and colour are just right for you,, as is the one you already own. The brown sweater is awful, what were they thinking?  Thanks for doing so much.

  10. This was good. I needed to see some variety, so thank you. I am actually ordering the black jeans from the NSale. I got discouraged when most of my wish list items sole
out and I stopped looking. But I do need some new black jeans and was surprised to see they came in petite sizes. May have to add that leopard tee since you styled it so nicely together.

  11. Did you find that  those mayari birkenstockz run more narrow than other birks? I ordered those as my first birks and sent.them back bc they felt.too narrow through the midfoot. I don’t know if those were different from other birks or.normal.
