Try On Haul + This Week’s Looks

Greetings and cheers to the weekend! The sales are pretty stellar this weekend, plus Nordstrom is running their Double Points event! This post is a smattering of what I wore this week, try ons, and some things I recommend that are on sale or part of Nordstrom double points.

I’m almost ready to share my shorts review post, but I’m waiting on a couple more styles to come in. I have tried on sooo many shorts! Oh my word. I’m trying to figure out how to share all the pix without crashing your computers.

I know the posts that are image heavy tend to be slow to load, so I’m going to maybe work on putting some together, but that takes more time so… I will have that post to you in a few days, I hope.

Meanwhile, let’s get this party started!

For size reference, I’m a 6 or 8 (28 or 29) in pants and jeans, a small in tops, and an 8 in dresses. And I usually wear a size 8 shoe.

Also, I’m going to talk about the other items I’m wearing in these pictures, even if they’re not new try-ons this week. I realize not everyone is hanging on my every word (shocking, I know!) so in case you missed the details the first time, I’ll try to fill you in.

Try On Haul: Loft, Nordstrom, J.Crew & Madewell

LOFT // 40% off with code FRESHPICKS

For some reason, I have one random LOFT item to share with you this week, but they are having 40% off so be sure to check out last week’s try on haul, where I shared more cute items from LOFT, as well as my Loft Favorites page in The Shop.

LOFT Garden Mixed Media Shoulder Button Top (size small) // This top is fresh and fun for spring. It has the jersey knit back and the woven front, for added comfort. It has a boxy fit, so I did a front tuck. It runs true to size; I’m in the small.

I styled this top two ways for this post. First, the look above with light wash jeans and white leather espadrilles:

MOTHER Looker Ankle Fray Skinny Jeans in Love Gun (size 29) // These are quickly replacing my AG Legging Ankle Jeans as my current favorites. I never thought I’d see the day! I like the higher rise, the denim is super soft and comfortable but doesn’t bag out, and they fit me like they were made for me. I know every woman’s body is different, but if you’re a fan of the AG legging ankle jeans, you will probably like these.

Yes, major investment denim here, but if that’s your thing, I highly recommend these. I got mine on sale, and Shopbop and Nordstrom have them on sale again, but sizes are limited. You can find all sizes (but not on sale) at Bloomies. These jeans run TTS, or size up if in between.

BLOOMINGDALES // Take 25% off when you buy two or more pairs of women’s shoes, plus Loyallists get a $50 Reward Card for every $200 you spend on almost all other women’s shoes through May 6, 2019.

Eileen Fisher Women’s Lee Washed Leather d’Orsay Espadrille Flats (also at Nordstrom) // Another item I’ve shared before, but to recap, these shoes are extremely lightweight and comfortable right out of the box, but I have to say, the more I wear them, the more I love them. They soften up and feel so nice on the foot. They’re also very versatile, I like them with shorts, jeans, skirts… you name it!

I recommend sizing up a half size, even though the website says they’re true. I’m linking them at Bloomies b/c they qualify for the 25% off two or more pairs, but they’re also at Nordstrom if you’re more interested in Double Points.

I also styled the top with dark wash jeans and pink mules. I like it both ways!

Rag & Bone Ankle Skinny Jeans (size 28) // These are mostly sold out, but Rag & Bone makes other similar styles, and I really love the fit of these now that they’re broken in. I did end up sizing down to a 28. The fit is phenomenal, and they are a nice, thick, but very soft denim. Also I think the wash on this particular pair stunning.

Steve Madden Pointed Slip-On Mules // These are really cute on, and they’re fairly comfortable. They’re not a luxury shoe, by any stretch, but I wore them all day Sunday and didn’t get any blisters or anything. They stay on the foot well for a mule, which is hard to find. Best of all, they’re only $69, plus 25% off this weekend with code MOM.

NORDSTROM // Nordstrom credit cardmembers earn 6 points per dollar, debit cardmembers earn 4 points, and Rewards members earn 2 points on Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack purchases through May 12.

Boden Robyn Scoop Neck Tee (size small) // This is the same tee that I have in the white with hello in many languages. I went ahead and ordered the navy with the stripes because I like the white one so much. I dress casually most of the time, and right now I feel like I’m lacking elevated t-shirts in my spring/summer wardrobe. I have a lot of basic tees in neutral colors, and I have a lot of cute tops for dressing up my jeans, but I need more tops like this one. I don’t like to buy duplicates, but these are different enough that I don’t feel like I have the same top in two different colors.

Citizens of Humanity Rocket Crop Jeans (size 30) // Yes, another pair of investment denim. I know, I’m sorry. I really do try to find lower priced alternatives to share as well, but when I do these try on hauls, I usually try on things with my go-to favorites.

This is my 2nd year with these jeans, and they’re my go-to crop skinnies for spring and summer. I have a darker Paige pair, which I like, but they’re suuuuper tight on the leg, and a dark wash, so I mainly wear them for going out. These are much more casual, and they almost read as a straight crop, but they work better for my body type than a true straight crop.

also wearing: Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops (These probably need no introduction, but they never go on sale, so Nordstrom Double Points makes this a great time to take the plunge if you’ve been wanting a pair.)

Halogen Short Sleeve Jumpsuit (size 6) // I really wanted this in the black, but they were sold out in my size, so I ordered the stripe. I feel a bit like a jailbird, but I do like the overall fit of this jumpsuit.

also wearing: Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

Boden Melinda Jersey Sheath Dress (size 8) // This dress was such a pleasant surprise!! I like the idea of casual dresses, but I rarely find any that I like because I don’t look good in shift dresses or swing dresses, and it seems like most casual dresses are one or the other. Or maxis, which is fine, but sometimes I don’t want to schlep around all that material.

This casual sheath is really flattering, easy to wear, and very well made. It’s a modal/cotton blend that is nice and stretchy, but it still has some substance to it. It’s not cut too low under the arms, the wide straps allow a regular bra, it has a flattering v-neck that it isn’t too low cut, and it comes in two fun prints. Total win!!! I’d say this dress runs TTS. The 8 fits me perfectly.

also wearing: Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

J.Crew // 25% OFF FULL PRICE STYLES WITH CODE STEPITUP

J.Crew Linen roll-cuff T-shirt (also at Nordstrom) size small // This top is really cute, and I don’t mind the boxy fit because it’s a nice length for wearing with higher rise jeans and pants. The roll cuff sleeve is a nice detail, and I appreciate the straight hemline.

It’s 100% linen, so I’m concerned about shrinkage. It’s also very thin, so I’d recommend going with a darker color if you don’t want it to be see-through. I think I’m going to exchange mine for the navy in a medium.

It’s excluded from the discount, so if you like it, I recommend getting it at Nordstrom so you can at least earn Double Points.

J.Crew Denim short in white size 29 // I’m not loving these shorts. They denim is nice quality, but they sort of flare at the leg opening, which does nothing for me since I have wide hips and thin legs. If you have thicker legs that are more in proportion to your hips, these might work for you.

also wearing: Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

Tie-front sleeveless Western shirt in pale mist wash size small // This top is part of the sale, but I can’t say I love it. The boob pockets are rather unfortunate, and it’s kind of bulky around the mid-section, which is NOT where I need any more bulk. Carrying three babies in my womb and my penchant for cheese have created plenty of natural bulk, thankyouverymuch.

also wearing: J.Crew Denim shorts in white and Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

Scoopneck dolman T-shirt in stretch TENCEL size medium // This top is adorable, but it’s too low-cut for me, unfortunately. If you’re smaller chested, you may love this one. Definitely size up one, though. It’s very snug.

also wearing: J.Crew Denim shorts in white and Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

J.Crew Vintage cotton V-neck T-shirt in subtle pink (size medium) // I have this tee in grey and white, and I love it. I ordered the pink, hoping it would be a pretty blush shade, but it’s too peachy for me personally, so it’s going back.

I recommend sizing up in these as well. They’re thin, and they do require an iron after washing, but I like the shape of the neckline, the straight hemline, the lack of boob pocket, and the relaxed but not oversized fit. It’s a good basic tee for those who need that.

also wearing: J.Crew Denim shorts in white and Tory Burch Miller Flip Flops

J.CREW FACTORY // Take an extra 20% off 2 items, 30% off 3 items, 40% off 4+ items with code WELLSTOCKED.

J.Crew Flutter-sleeve faux-wrap top (size medium) // I shared this last week in the lavender in a size small. It was too small for me, so I ordered the medium, but I’m not loving the fit. Besides the fact that it needs an iron, it just doesn’t fit well over the chest, is a little low-cut, and falls open as I move around.

I do think it would flatter a woman who is smaller on top, though. I like the faux wrap styling, it’s very easy to put on and off. It also comes in black and lavender, and it’s only $25.

also wearing: Rag & Bone Ankle Skinny Jeans and Tory Burch Minnie Flats in Goan Sand (these earn a $50 Reward Card at Bloomies or Double Points at Nordstrom)

J.Crew Striped open-neck cami top (size medium) // This is another re-order. This top was also too small in the small, so I ordered the medium. I like the thick fabric and the cut of this tank top.

also wearing: Rag & Bone Ankle Skinny Jeans and Tory Burch Minnie Flats in Goan Sand (these earn a $50 Reward Card at Bloomies or Double Points at Nordstrom)

Madewell Village Ruffle-Sleeve Shirt in Highgate Rainbow Stripe (size small) // I like this top a lot, but it is soooo thin. I wish they would stop making tops so see-through. This is why I revert back to t-shirts. I think the colors are so pretty, and the ruffle detail on the sleeve and the flattering v-neckline make me want to keep it anyway, but I know I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing anything this thin, and I don’t want to wear a cami under it.

also wearing: Citizens of Humanity Rocket Crop Jeans and Stuart Weitzman Marabella Suede Espadrille Wedges in Dolce (black is 25% off at Nordstrom; other colors qualify for Save 25% Off Two or More Pairs at Bloomies; similar for less by Caslon)

This Week’s Looks

This week was kind of a doozie for me. I spent most of it wishing it away, haha! And here we are, on the flip side, and yes, it feels like it flew.

I don’t have a lot to say about these looks, and in the interest of time, I’m just going to give a link to the outfit details and maybe share where I wore it if that seems relevant.

LOOK #1 // Church on Sunday. I had nursery duty so I kept it casual.

LOOK #2 // When I said I wear this outfit at least once a week, I wasn’t joking. I wore this on Monday to the dentist for my teeth whitening and then to the mall to pick up a few things.

LOOK #3 // I’m not sure when/where I wore this. I actually re-created it yesterday when I was doing try-ons, haha!

LOOK #4 // I wore this to my MRI on Thursday and then afterwards to run some errands.

LOOK #5 // This was last night’s date night look.

LOOK #6 // I didn’t wear this this week, but I wanted to give y’all a heads up that the Sanctuary Uptown tiered hem tee in Periwink is 33% off, and most sizes are still avail.

And that’s a wrap!

Don’t forget to check out yesterday’s post with What To Buy at the Nordstrom Double Points event. This is a great time to stock up on items that never go on sale, and rack up some Nordstrom Notes for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which will be here before we know it!!!

My top picks are the Tory Burch Miller Sandals or her Minnie Travel Flats, any beauty/skincare products you need to stock up on, and this is also a good time to update your bras and undies.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. Love seeing all of your try-on hauls! Have you ever heard of jpegmini? I’m a photographer and I use it to optimize all of the pictures in my blog posts : ) I have the Pro version.

    1. Hm, I don’t know. I try not to upload huge files to my blog. I export from Lightroom and they’re only 1000 pixels wide. I have the resolution set to 240 for some reason, but maybe 72 is good enough for web viewing. Do I still need to optimize them? I’d love to do anything I can go make my posts load faster.

      1. It probably depends on what size the file is at 1000px….jpegmini can get an image down to KB in size.

  2. What a treat this haul try on was….as usual. I giggled about the jailhouse jumpsuit.  Lol. But I do agree. I like most everything and certainly agree about shirts being to see thru…but in today’s world so many women don’t mind the see through look.

I did want to say I ended up ordering a white denim jacket…..I’m so excited to wear it.  I love the looks you shared with that white jacket.

Thanks for all you do to keep us looking fashionable and modern.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. Good morning Jolynne! I love the white shorts on you… makes your legs look even thinner!! And I love that striped tank top! You look beautiful in all the pics!

  4. Good morning! I’ve been following you for five years now. I’m 26, and we share the same body type. You actually gave me a lightbulb moment last week, when I read the “wide hips and thin legs.” That is exactly what I have, but never realized on my own. Thank you!

    1. That’s amazing! Thanks for following along. Yes, it was a revelation I just had in the past year or so. Really helps to understand why certain clothing items are so difficult.

  5. I love these try on sessions and what you wore… I agree with the thin see thru tops and I’m not a fan of layering especially in the summer when it’s so hot.  I just bought a black and white stripe tank like the one you styled only thinner stripes. Our weather has finally taken a turn and looks like some nice double digits with sun are on the way 🤗. I actually got to sit out by the pool yesterday, but cooler today and really nice tomorrow.. what a roller coaster.. uggh . Have a great weekend.

  6. Happy Saturday!  Just wanted to let you know that I bought the Boden multi-language hello tee and styled it on my blog yesterday. I love it! I’ve added the Boden metallic stripe and the Kut from the Kloth white denim jacket to my cart through your site.  So, thank you!

  7. I really liked that JCrew flutter sleeve faux wrap top in green but so glad I went to the store to try it on because like you, I didn’t like the fit. I am largered on top as well so maybe that’s why. But I did find a cute top at Loft in the same color so it worked out and I think the quality is better as well.
Glad your MRI is now behind you and hopefully they can figure out how to help you?

  8. I find these try-on posts SO helpful! I’m sure they are a ton of work to do and organize but I find (and rule out) so many purchases through these, even though we have different body types. Mostly I appreciate your comments on the quality of the fabrics…SOOOO may tops are see-through and crazy thin these days. I actually had been seeing that green loft wrap top online and considering it but after seeing it on you I think it’s one I’d be ironing endlessly and therefore not wearing a ton. Always appreciate seeing the thickness of the tops and if bras show through. God Bless the jumpsuit wearers out there. They are cute and totally trending and all but geez they seem like a lot of work. Think I’ll leave those to the young gals 😉

  9. LOVE that Boden dress on you!! Always enjoy your try-on posts, so thanks for continuing to do them, even though I’m sure they are a lot of work!

  10. I totally agree about the thin fabrics. I just returned a J Crew Vintage T shirt this week that I ordered online because it was cream, and you could see my bellybutton through the fabric! Always looking for the perfect balance between a fabric that drapes nicely, isn’t tight to the body and isn’t see through. Still looking this season. Thanks for all of the work putting this post together.

  11. This question really has nothing to do with the post. I love the new lighter shades of nail polish and I always liked my fingers and toes to match during the summer. However, what’s your opinion on not matching nails and toes. I’d prefer darker colors on my toes and lighter on my nails.

    1. I hardly ever match – i also prefer a lighter neutral on my hands and darker colors on my toes. I do try to make sure they complement each other, but even then sometimes they’re not a great combo – as long as they don’t clash, I’m okay with it.

  12. I like the white shorts on you. Agree with another reader who said they make your legs look even thinner. Also love that Boden dress on you. One of the cutest dresses I’ve seen on you. Don’t like the pastel stripes of the Madewell shirt – just eh.

  13. You shared some cute pieces.  Like you, I wish they didn’t make so many cute tops that are see through.  I don’t care to show so much of my skin to everyone.  I hope y’all have a blessed Sunday!

  14. Hey Jolynne!! I love all of the tops you have posted. Some if them are really thin. Normally I wear a cami, butl when it’s so hot. I perspire really bad when I wear a thin top and a cami. Is there anything you could recommend to me to keep me a little cooler.

    1. I don’t have any brilliant ideas. 🙂 I don’t like the feeling of layers so I never wear a cami for see-through reasons. If a top is too see-through for my comfort level, it goes back.

  15. The Boden dress is my favourite and it looks lovely on you. I hope you get some answers to your vertigo on Monday.

  16. Great post!  I love the try on sessions.  FYI, I didn’t have any trouble with getting the post to load.

  17. I’m a huge Boden fan and usually buy 1-2 of their jersey dresses every year and they are always the ones I reach for!
