Try On Haul + What to Buy at Nordstrom Fall Sale

Greetings, friends, on this fine Saturday! I’ve got more try-on pictures for you today, and I also wanted to let you know that the Nordstrom Fall Sale is going on right now, and soooooo much good stuff is on markdown. Of course, sizes are going fast, but you might get lucky with some really good deals.

I’m going to start with the try-on haul, and then I’ll use some of my nifty shopping widgets to share my picks from the Nordstrom sale.

Try On Haul 11.10.18

All details are under the pictures. Also, my mirror is really dirty. I keep forgetting to clean it because I don’t see it until I upload my pictures. Unless otherwise noted, there is no sparkle in any of these pieces. It’s just mirror sludge. 🙈

I’ve had some requests for holiday looks that are for warmer climates or for indoor venues that get warm, so I’ve rounded up a bunch of pieces with short sleeves. I’m hosting the ladies’ Christmas brunch for our church this year, and I’m planning to pick one of these tops to wear because I always get hot when I’m hosting, even if it’s cold outside.

J.Crew Factory Lace Tee // This lace t-shirt comes in 4 colors, and I ordered both black and ivory to try. It’s quite boxy, unfortunately, because otherwise I really like it. The small fits perfectly through the chest and shoulders, and it’s comfortable to move around in. The sleeves are a nice length, and the neckline is flattering.

I feel like the black is more forgiving than the ivory, but when I put the black velvet blazer over the ivory, it totally transforms the look and gives it the structure it’s missing.

Eliza J. Velvet Blazer // I ordered this blazer because I love festive tank tops and camis, but I usually feel too bare wearing them with nothing on my shoulders… not to mention, it can get chilly. This is such a great piece. It’s the perfect length (for me, anyway!) and it’s got just the right amount of structure to compensate for boxier pieces.

The ruching detail on the 3/4 sleeves is flattering and adds interest, and it has some stretch to it so it’s very comfortable to wear all evening. It does have a hook closure in the front, but I don’t think I’d ever close it. For size reference, I’m wearing a small and it JUST fits. If you tend to run in between sizes, you may want to size up in this for some extra breathing room.

Joe’s Icon Ankle Skinny Jeans // These jeans are a great wardrobe staple, and they’re currently on sale for just under $100. They do run small, though. I’m wearing the 29, and the waist is quite snug, although I like the fit everywhere else. In my experience, Joe’s Jeans tend to stretch out some with wear, so I’m tempted to keep this size and see if they break in. I’m worried if I go up a size, they’ll bag out over time.

Also wearing: L.K. Bennett Sersha Pumps // My pumps are old, and they no longer come in the oxblood suede; I just threw them on with this because I liked the color. They do come in black and navy, though, and they are amazingly gorgeous. L.K.Bennett is one of the brands Kate Middleton wears a lot.

J.Crew Factory Lace T-Shirt (small) // AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // L.K. Bennett Sersha Pumps

This is the same lace tee but in the black, and the grey jeans you’ve seen before. They’re currently on sale, and I loooove them. They’re insanely comfortable, on par with my most comfortable AG bluejeans. Some AG jeans are stiffer than others, but these are super soft and really move with you. For reference, I have the 28.

LOFT Velvet Dot Flared Sleeve Shirt // This top is really cute and easy to throw on with jeans for a casual party. I’m even thinking ahead to New Year’s Eve. I love that you can wear it for day or night, and the velvet dots are just so fun. I don’t think it’s the best fit for me, and it runs a little big, but I think it’s a great pick for those of you looking for lightweight holiday tops for warmer venues.

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // black pumps (old)

White House Black Market Sequin Flower Cami // I’m a sucker for a sequined cami, and I had a gift card to WHBM, so I ordered this one in two sizes. The medium is definitely the better fit. I love it, but I feel like it’s awfully bare for wearing without anything over it — at least for the venues I typically frequent.

It’s cute with coated black jeans and the velvet blazer… I just need to find a place to wear it! I don’t like wearing pants to my husband’s office holiday party, and I don’t have any other dressy holiday events coming up that I know of.

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // black pumps (old)

Okay, now we’re taking it down a notch with some cozy sweaters and long sleeve tops.

J.Crew Donegal Turtleneck // I love a donegal knit, and I love an off-white sweater, and this is the perfect color combination, if you ask me. The relaxed turtleneck is comfortable and lays nicely, and the ribbed knit and side slits are nice details. I’m also a huge fan of raglan sleeves.

Unfortunately for me, my 15-year-old daughter absconded with it after I finished my try-on sesh, so I have a feeling it’s going to end up in her closet. By the way, it also comes in grey and navy, and I’m wearing a size small.

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // Sam Edelman Felicia Flats

Love By Design Fair Isle Sweater // This sweater was a disappointment. It’s really short and really small. I love the colors, though, so maybe it would be worth trying in the medium. I’m just not sure it would be long enough, even then. If you’re petite, it’s a great option for you!

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // BP. Lance Booties

LOFT Speckled Open Hoodie Jacket // This is more of a sweatshirt than a jacket or sweater, and it’s a really fun piece. It’s super cozy and fleece lined — perfect for casual weekend wear. HIGHLY recommend this one! FYI, in this case, the flecks you see in the jacket ARE part of the fabric — not just a dirty mirror. Ha!

For reference, I’m wearing a small. You may want to size up for more room in the arms and shoulders, especially if you have bigger arms.

LOFT Essential V-Neck Tank // This tank runs reeeeeally small. I ordered a small and a medium, and this is the medium, and it is skin tight. I am sucking in my tummy for all I’m worth in this picture. I like the neckline and thicker straps, but I wish it wasn’t quite so form fitting.

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // BP. Lance Booties

LOFT Raglan Long Sleeve Tee // This is a nice basic long sleeve tee, and the wide neckline is a fun feature, but it does stick up a little bit. Maybe it will lay down as you wear it. I also like the seam running down the back — it’s just another subtle detail that adds interest. I’m wearing a small, and it’s very comfortable. It looks nice alone, but you can also layer it under a cardigan or jacket if you tend to get cold.

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // BP. Lance Booties

LOFT Wide V-Neck Long Sleeve Tee // I love the neckline on this tee, but the sleeves are soooooo tight. Very odd fit. Definitely size up if you order this one. (I’m wearing a small.)

Also wearing: AG legging ankle jeans (30% off) // BP. Lance Booties

Madewell Inland Turtleneck Sweater in Coziest Yarn // I had this sweater last year in a small in the Hthr Burgundy, and I was so excited to see they brought it back this season. It’s a great layering piece — I wore it a lot under my taupe suede moto jacket.

It does run a little small and short, though, and I’m still up a few pounds above where I like to be (#FWTFLflunkie) so I ordered the Hthr Cement in the medium, and I like the fit much better. I didn’t have a good off-white turtleneck, and that’s a winter wardrobe essential for me, so this is definitely a keeper.

Also wearing: Paige Hoxton High Waist Ankle Skinny Jeans // J.Crew Suede Smoking Slippers

Madewell Belmont Mockneck Sweater in Coziest Yarn // I ordered this ribbed sweater in the Hthr Root and the Heather Carmine, and I still can’t decide which I like better. It’s got a really cute fit for a shorter, boxier style, and it’s cozy and comfortable. I’m always pleased with the quality of Madewell sweaters. For size reference, this is the small.

Also wearing: Paige Hoxton High Waist Ankle Skinny Jeans // J.Crew Suede Smoking Slippers

J.Crew Mockneck Sweater in Supersoft Yarn // This is a gorgeous sweater too — a really nice thick knit, and the supersoft stretchy fabric that is so popular right now. I ordered both Hthr Fresh Berry and Mahogany to compare, and I love them both, but that Berry is just sooooo gorgeous. I guess everyone else likes it too because it’s selling out faster than the other colors.

This sweater fits a lot like the Madewell Inland sweater, in that it’s kind of snug and rides up as you wear it, so I sent my smalls back, and I ordered the Berry in a medium. This sweater always seems to be excluded from the J.Crew promos, but in this case, I feel the quality is worth the price.

Also wearing: Paige Hoxton High Waist Ankle Skinny Jeans // J.Crew Suede Smoking Slippers

Here’s one way I’ll style this sweater when I get it in the right size — with the leather jacket and leopard mules. It probably could use a long necklace, but I opted for big earrings instead.

And for some reason, I didn’t take pictures without the jacket in the Mahogany color, but here it is with the leather jacket.

What To Buy at Nordstrom Fall Sale

Moving on to the Nordstrom Fall Sale! So Nordstrom isn’t the only retailer running amazing sales this weekend. I have a full roundup in my weekly email newsletter that is going out this morning, but for this post I wanted to focus on the Nordstrom sale b/c it’s so good.

In the interest of time, I’m not going to write captions for everything, but most of what I’m featuring is something I have or I’ve at least tried and can recommend. There are two pages to this widget — if you’re on a computer, you’ll want to use the > sign on the side to scroll to page 2.

And that’s a wrap! I wanted to also share pictures of me wearing some of the Nordstrom sale items, but I just don’t have time today. Too much to do to get ready for my dinner party tonight, and I also want to get a box in the mail to my son this morning. His 19th birthday is on Wednesday. #wheredoestimego

  1. I’m snuggled up in the Wubby Fleece right now. Love it!! I love all the short sleeve tops, but don’t like wearing them in winter when I’m all pasty white🤪 LOL Lots of cute sweaters! Have a great weekend! XO

  2. Thank you for the short sleeved holiday top options! We just got the invite to my husband’s company party, and some of those look perfect for me. The party dress is holiday- casual, and the party is at our local MLB stadium. Thanks again!

  3. I didn’t realize our sons’ birthdays were so close. My son turns 18 on Sunday and he’s our only. We’ve been asking ourselves “How did we get here?” “Where has the time gone?” But it’s been so fun to see him plan and look at his future!

  4. I like these colors so much!!! I just really don’t look good in browns, tans, sage, olive and all the Fall colors that everyone is posting. This gives us variety and something for everyone. Thanks for all your hard work!

  5. I bought the berry sweater from J Crew in small and medium and I can’t wait for them to get here. I rarely pay full price for something but I paid full price for this sweater.

Also, the redish color wide V neck tee you tried on from Loft I bought in the white/black stripe. I agree about sizing up. I had to return because it kept sticking up on my shoulders and it looked funny.

Thanks for all you do. I love your style! Good luck getting your Xmas shopping done.

  6. I’m asking for prayers this morning as California is on fire. So many people and animals have lost their homes and the fires continue to rage on ….the pictures look like Armageddon. From northern to central to Southern California the air quality is terrible.
And the hot dry weather and strong winds aren’t helping. PRAYING FOR A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER – California needs rain!

    1. Praying for you folks in California that rain, no wind, safety for all involved and mercy comes your way. We got the horrible smoke this summer from the wildfires in British Columbia, Washington state and Montana. It was horrible. God bless! 🙏💜

    2. Oh dear. That sounds horrific. I can’t even imagine. Meanwhile, we’ve had one of the rainiest years ever. It seems so unfair, doesn’t it? I wish we could share! Praying for CA today. xoxo

  7. You sure did share a lot of great options for the upcoming holidays.  We have two gifts left to purchase then we’re done, thank goodness.  My planning skills help me buy gifts throughout the year, so that I don’t have to panic in Nov. and Dec.  Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  8. I love your blog(and you) I recently lost quite a bit of weight(80 lbs!!) I have about 15 more to go and promised myself a nice pair of jeans or 2 along with a few other nice items(years of raising kids I never had anything really nice) My question is, AG jeans, do they have pockets, I have seen some comments say they do not?And are they denim material or “stretchy jegging” material? Thanks for any help you can give!

    1. Hey Kelly. Congrats on the weight loss! That’s quite a feat. The blue jeans are denim — most are 98% cotton, and they do have pockets just like any regular jeans. The black jeans and grey have more rayon and other materials in them, and some are heavier than others, but none are like knit leggings. I hope that helps!

  9.  I went Christmas shopping yesterday and got it all done but one small one left to get a friend. 🙂 Feels good. It just fell into place with sales for my adult kids and their spouses. :). You can do it. You’ll feel so good to get it done. Then you can go out shopping with no
Pressure later….. with your red Starbucks cup of coffee. Ha ha. Great post today. So detailed. Love a lot of it.

  10. I just bought a top from Amazon like the wide v-neck one you styled.  It looks darn near the same the way the neckline is and the raglan seeming.  Only the top I got off Amazon was styled as off the shoulder.  If I wear it on my shoulders the sleeves do fit snugger than when I wear it on the shoulder.  Just a thought. . . . .

  11. Cute choices…Another thought is to find a vintage sparkly top from a friend or consignment shop…pair it with jeans or pants… a pair of heels…a clutch… and you have a unique and thrifty holiday look….

  12. I just wanted to thank you, Jo-Lynne, for being willing to stand in front of a mirror and take photos of yourself in various outfits for our benefit. As a person who avoids photos, I know it can’t always be easy. Of course, we always think you look gorgeous, but you probably don’t look at the photos the same way. Have a great day!

    1. Haha, thank you! At least in the mirror, I can see how I look and stand in a way that’s mostly flattering. Sometimes I get pix back from Alison, and I’m horrified at how I look. (I don’t post those, naturally!) 😉

  13. You’re definitely the queen when it comes to picking out gorgeous sweaters. I had to stop scrolling when I saw that J.Crew Mockneck sweater. I also have my eyes on a few pieces from the Nordstrom sale but I can’t decide if I should pull the trigger now or wait until Black Friday sales start.

    1. I think most of what’s on sale now will be sold out or very limited sizes by then, but it’s hard to say for sure. If you keep the tags on, you might be able to get a price adjustment if they do go lower over that weekend.

  14. Do you ever tailor your clothes? I love the lace t but a tiny nip in on each side would make it so much more flattering. I often need a larger top for the chest but take inat the waist.

    1. I do sometimes, and I agree, this top needs it. I’m not sure I could still pull it on over my head, though, it if were more fitted. It needs a side zip and more of a fitted shape, but that costs more, and J.Crew Factory tries to keep prices low — which I think is why it’s designed this way.

  15. I love the navy dot tee – I could totally see wearing that with a pencil skirt for my Christmas Party. 🙂 I noticed below that someone had mentioned your sons birthday? My son turned 18 on Saturday and it was so fun. We went out with him in the afternoon with some close family friends and then he was out with his friends in the evening. They do grow up so fast!
