Try-On Haul: White Jeans, Cute Spring Tops, a Few Dresses, and the Best Loafer Mules!

Greetings, friends. I’ve been trying for hours to get this post out, but I’ve been so distracted by all the things going on around us right now, I’m having a hard time corralling my jumbled thoughts and being productive.

The Virus is in our area, so schools are shutting down, and most people are being asked to work from home… including my husband. I’m just hoping and praying that we can slow this thing down and not overwhelm our hospitals and medical personnel.

Despite all that, I do want to keep the blog running on its usual schedule as much as I can, despite the #coronacraziness. I figure we can all use a diversion right now, and what better diversion than spring fashion!?!

Today I have my usual Friday Try-On Haul. It’s not as big as some, but I have a lot of pictures. All links and descriptions are BELOW the pictures.

Try-Ons: White Jeans

I ordered several pairs of white jeans from the Shopbop Sale, and I’ve been trying to figure out which pair (if any) to keep.

Why are white jeans so hard!?! I actually tried all three styles on twice, and took pictures of both times, and took notes! Hopefully I can consolidate my thoughts. They’re all good, but none are perfect.

For size reference, I’m 5’5″ and 135#, and a 28 is my true size. I usually size up in white jeans, though.

J Brand High Rise Alana Crop Jeans (size 29) // These are comfortable and stretchy, but they’re a tad thin. I hate how you can see the front pockets through them, and the rear is sort of see-through as well, especially when I squat down.

I also feel like the rear pockets are too wide-set, but this is the best rise for me out of the three — the waistband sits right on my belly button and is very comfortable.

These are 90% cotton/8% polyester/2% elastane, and described as super-stretch denim. They definitely do feel soft and stretchy.

According to the website, they have a 10.25″ rise and a 28.5″ inseam, but no way is that inseam measurement right. They’re shorter than that. I think the rise is about right, though.

Citizens Of Humanity Citizens of Humanity Rocket Sculpt Crop Jeans (size 29) // These are also comfortable and stretchy, and maybe slightly thicker than J Brand, but not much. The material is 89% cotton, 7% polyester, and 4% elastane.

I still see the front pockets, though, and I wish the rise was 1/2” higher. These say they have a 9.75″ rise and 26.75″ inseam, which is probably about right.

The size 29 fits perfectly, and the rear pocket placements seems pretty good, but they are quite snug on the legs. I didn’t order the 30 to try, so I’m not sure if that would be an option or not.

Rag & Bone Nina High Rise Skinny Jeans (size 29) // These aren’t quite as stark white as the other two, but the most notable feature is the nude front pockets. BRILLIANT!!! Why does no one else do that?

The material is 73% cotton/20% lyocell/5% polyester/2% spandex, and it feels thick and stretchy and comfortable. I just wish the rise wasn’t quite so high — it sits right above my tummy pooch, which does me no favors.

The website claims they have a 9.75″ rise and 26.5″ inseam, but the rise is definitely higher than that! Probably 10.75″. I have noticed in the past that the denim measurements on the Shopbop website are often not accurate, and don’t jibe with the same styles on other websites. I also wish the rear pickets weren’t set quite so high.

These are still a contender, and I did get them on sale, but they’re still pricey for jeans that I don’t absolutely love.

Okay, moving on…

Try-Ons: Denim Shorts

I also ordered some jean shorts from the Shopbop Sale.

Agolde Reese Relaxed Cutoff Shorts (size 29) // These are terrible, but I thought I’d show them anyway. For one thing, they’re too big. But also just not a flattering cut — too wide, and stiff, and super high rise. Bleh. They have already gone back.

They may not look that bad in these pictures, but trust me…  and also, please pardon my white legs. Yikes. The Lightroom preset I use makes them look even whiter than they are. 🙈

Agolde Carrie Long Length Slim Shorts (size 29) // And these just make me laugh. They’re giving me all the Huck Finn vibes!

I was excited to see longer shorts trending, but this is just not a good look. Maybe if they had a sewn hem.

I did a little better at LOFT…

Try-Ons: LOFT

Today LOFT is running a sale — FREE SHIP + 40-50% OFF! CODE: YESSS. The free ship is rare for them, so a good time to grab something if you were holding out.

LOFT V-Back Tie Waist Jumpsuit (size 6) // This jumpsuit is really cute, but it’s too big. I returned it and ordered the 4. Otherwise, I like the cut of it, and the v-back is fun.

The material looks and feels a little cheap and shiny, but for the price (on sale) it’s a really cute piece that can be dressed up or down for events this spring… if they don’t all get canceled, anyway!

LOFT Floral V-Neck Cardigan (size M) // Wearing a v-neck cardigan buttoned-up is trendy this spring, and I like it because it’s sort of a 2-for-1 kind of deal. (You can also wear it unbuttoned in the more traditional way.)

This one is pretty bright, though, and the v-neck is on the lower side. I sized up to the medium because the arms in the small were really snug… see below.

I apologize for not showing you how it looks unbuttoned. I was in a rush yesterday, trying to get these pictures taken.

LOFT Floral V-Neck Cardigan (size S) // You can see the small here, and the sleeves are really tight. It’s also a bit on the short side.

These are the Rag & Bone jeans, by the way.

Try-Ons: Ann Taylor

I also placed an Ann Taylor order and they’re having a sale as well — BUY 3+ GET 40% OFF, BUY 2 GET 30% OFF, BUY 1 SAVE 20%.

Ann Taylor Floral Tiered Flounce Dress (size 4) // I have a wedding coming up this spring, and I thought this might be cute, but it’s way too froo-froo for me.

I also think it would look better with a strappy nude sandal. I like these shoes, but the skirt is too long for a dark shoe. A nude shoe would visually elongate the leg.

Size down if you try it, I am usually a 6 in AT dresses, and I needed a 4.

Ann Taylor Floral Belted Sheath (size 6) // I really wanted to love this. The sheath style is way more my thing, but it’s very short.

I think it would probably look better with a lower heel, but I didn’t have quite the right thing.

Also, I’m in the regular (not petite) but I linked the petite above because the regular sizes sold out.

Ann Taylor Fold Neck Sheath Dress (size 6) // I thought this was going to be a “third time’s a charm” situation, but it was not meant to be.

Usually I do really well with AT sheaths, but this one fits me strangely. It’s almost too big in the skirt, but not the bust or hips. Very odd. Maybe I need to try the 4, but I’m not sure that would fit through the chest and shoulders.

It’s a gorgeous color, though, and it also comes in black. And it comes in petite and tall sizes.

Amabella Strappy Suede Mule Pumps (size 8) // These are really fun, and a great play on the mule trend, but they are hard to walk in. They run TTS or a bit small.

Try-Ons Everlane

Let’s end on a high note! I was invited to pick out a few pieces from Everlane to share with you. Of course, I was happy to because I love Everlane!

Everlane The Day Loafer Mule (size 8) // I was so excited when I saw these being released because I love their Day Loafer, and I’m a huge fan of mules. I love the minimalist design of this pair, and the leather is super soft and supple.

Of course, they’re produced in an ethical and sustainable factory, as all Everlane products are. I like these so much that I promptly ordered another color. In my opinion, these are the perfect casual spring transition shoes!

Everlane The Pima Micro Rib Cap-Sleeve Tee (size M) // I think this top is soooo cute! I love the cut and the fit, and I am soooo happy to see more form-fitting shirts coming back into style.

Because it is ribbed and stretchy, I sized up to a medium, and I’m so glad I did. I wouldn’t want it any smaller, and as it is, it’s very body-con, but I really like it. It will also make a nice layering piece.

It’s 95% pima cotton, and 5% elastane, and it can be washed and dried, although I will probably hang to dry.

Everlane The Air Scoop-Neck Tee (size S) // And finally, this is just a simple tee, but I love the fabric and the length and the cut. It has a modest scoop neck, which is pretty much universally flattering, and the material is lightweight and suuuper soft.

It comes in several colors, but I thought this Burnt Sienna was so pretty. It’s 100% cotton, and the instructions say to machine wash cold and lay flat to dry. It runs true to size; I took my regular small in this one.

And that’s a wrap! Sorry this is going out so late. I just couldn’t pull it together any sooner.

Going Forward…

As I said, I will be trying to keep it business as usual around here as much as possible. I’m open to ideas for content over the next few weeks. I’m assuming a lot of your special events are being cancelled or postponed, but hopefully they will eventually get rescheduled. If you’re looking for anything particular, let me know how I can help!

  1. Jo-Lynne,

I loved the Everlane items you featured! You can definitely see that IF has worked for you, you look very thin. I’m down 15 pounds from doing IF.

I live in Michigan and everything is being shut down here. My daughter and I are hosting a baby shower at the end of April and are worried that we may have to cancel it. In any case, any suggestions on outfits would be appreciated. I want to buy a new outfit and shoes, yay!

I appreciate your perspective  today and yesterday on the Corona Virus. I looked up “Flatten the Curve.”  Thanks for sharing that. I have also shared that with my family.

    1. We are traveling to North Carolina for my daughter’s baby shower in mid-April, and I hoping it will not be cancelled. I am also looking for what to wear. I was thinking white jeans with a nice sheath top (I have a couple from Loft which Jo-Lynne styled.) I am also doing IF. I was also thinking a dress, but I rarely wear dresses, and I never think I look good in them. So, I hope we get some ideas for a shower outfit.

  2. Thanks for sharing these looks!  You look great but I agree with you, I love the Everlane shoes and tees but don’t care for any of the other items.
Thanks for the diversion from all the Corona virus talk.  I’ve spent way too much time on the internet today!

  3. Love the look of the Everlane scoop neck tee.  Have you tried that shirt in white? I’m wondering how see through it is.

  4. I think the first pair of shorts look great on you.  Modern for sure.  The second makes me want to say aaaaahhrrrrrr.

  5. Yes what is about white jeans? They seem to run a size smaller and can show every little lump or bump on you… I did try a straight crop pair size 28 that fit great but not quite crop on me so I’m thinking of buying them and having them hemmed. I also tried on a few floral dresses for a family wedding in August and have decided to go with a plain dress especially for doing family pics! I just felt frumpy in them..🤷‍♀️.. Things really changed here in our part of Canada over the last 24 hours.. no cases here yet but people are getting prepared. One university is closed for next week so I’m sure the others will follow plus the other schools are closed already for March break. We’ve been advised not to travel outside Canada and if we do to be prepared to self quarantine for 2 weeks.. most if not all sports and social events are stopping and churches are starting to cancel services…so just going with the flow of things for now. Hopefully with things being closed we can be proactive and keep it away:) stay healthy:) our businesses and malls for now remain open.

  6. I appreciate your mentioning what’s happening in our country & world-wide. This is certainly a new situation for us all. I’m glad you plan to continue to blog as well. It is nice to come here and enjoy something that does not involve worrying!  On to the try-on’s: how easy are the Everlane mules to walk in ? Do they easily stay on or do you need to “work” at it a bit? I’ve purchased two pairs of Madewell mules. One pair is fairly easy to walk in & keep on but the others, not so much. My toes & the balls of my feet hurt after wearing them for a bit.

  7. So are white jeans getting whiter again? I guess they have to do that so I’ll buy a new pair (sigh). Does the agolde jean that you recently bought (which I guess you’d call a slim straight?) come in white? I have been thinking that maybe something a tad less skinny, but still slim, might be good for white jeans. I still like the Paige pair I have, but I generally find if they’re too skinny it’s more noticeable in white. I also find that when I try to size up to make them less see through, they feel like they’re falling off. I still want to try on the Madewell pair you liked — do you still like those? Cheers and keep up the good work! You look great btw…

  8. Thank you for this post and your honesty!
Love white jeans and red together!
I’m out there working with the public but…
If we stay home, I will definitely be wearing my
Jolynne lounge wear and barefoot dreams
    Cardigan!

  9. I love the jeans you are wearing to try on the 2 Everlane tees.  I didn’t see any info on them.  Can you post a link to them please?  Thanks!

  10. Thanks for continuing to post in these unsettling times! Some ideas for posts in the time of COVID-19: Shop your closet tips, Wearing the right top with the right jeans ( some look better with tucked, some untucked etc… All black outfits for spring/summer. Demo of cutting jeans and before vs after.

  11. Thanks so much for your commitment to your blog. I do appreciate something a little lighter & brighter in my life right now!

Would you be interested in doing a favorite seasonal nail color review?

Spring & summer handbags reviews would be good too!

  12. Beautiful Try On Haul!! My favorite is the Ann Taylor Floral Belted Sheath. You look so good in a Dress. Thank you for this Try On. Haul! Getting Great Ideas every Day. Have a Wonderful Weekend!!
    ……….Linda W. 🌷🌹

  13. I’d love to see a post on flip flops! Good quality, nice flip flops. 🙂 I’d also like to see transition tops/shirts. Thanks for all your posts and hard work!

  14. Things are changing so rapidly. Our stores are getting bare too. There is a palpable tension in the air. People look stressed. Universities and schools closing. Its feeling very, very real. Thank you for sharing info in how to flatten the curve: we are running out of time before COVD 19 grows exponentially. We all need to take personal responsibility to stop the spread of this virus. We have declined all social invites this weekend…. I’m sure this will become our new normal. Relaxing at home has its perks.

In terms of suggestions: how about shopping our closets? Your kitchen renos? Knowing how to update looks?

    Please stay safe!!

  15. Almost forgot.. maybe an idea for post… transitional coats/ jackets… different ways to wear a trench coat (3/4) length.

  16. I’m reading that denim midi skirts are in fashion. Have you tried any yet? I’d love to hear your recommendations.

  17. Thanks so much for this,  I think we all definitely need a break from all the corona virus stress!  It’s in our area too, and everybody is starting to panic!
I love the red floral top!  Do you have a link for it or is it something you’ve had a while? Also I just ordered a gorgeous dress from loft outlet in that same green floral, so pretty for spring!

    1. Hi, I’d like to see your kitchen update. Also, a purse wardrobe review about if you only have 1 purse, get this. If 2, add this style. 3, so know. Include sizing to your body frame.

I’d also like to read a behond thg he scenes look at a fashion bloggers work. How do you do what you do?

      Belts….in or out? Scarves too?!

  18. We are going to my nieces wedding outside of Nashville next weekend. It’s supposed to be mid 60s. I’m wearing a simple navy sleeveless sheath dress with cream floral pattern. Actually a dress I had but trying to keep it simple. What type of wrap /sweater would u suggest for hopefully outdoor wedding.

  19. One negative about living in a very rural area is that the WiFi can be rather slow and challenging, thus I finally got to see most of the pictures in this post.  Thank you so much for sharing a few pictures of the lovely shorts, to make us smile.  While I like Bermuda shorts, the ones you tried on look like they didn’t finish making them.  I wonder if the Spring wedding you have will still get to take place.  For the sake of the bride and groom, in particular, I sure hope so!!  I hope you’ve had a good weekend, thus far!

  20. Are the Ann Taylor Amabella Mule Pumps a shorter kitten heel? The website says 3 1/4 inches, but they certainly don’t look that tall based on their website or your pictures.

Ps thanks for all these great spring outfit ideas!
