Tweed Dress Outfit for Fall

Welcome back to 25 Days of Fall Fashion! Today I finally have a fall dress to share with you. Tweed, plaid, herringbone, and other menswear-inspired fabrics are classics (thank you, Coco Chanel) but they’re also a huge trend this fall.

I’ve actually been reading up on Chanel, and her story is fascinating. I purchased this coffee table book, mainly because I wanted it to stack on the etagere in my office, but I’ve also been reading it.

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel is pretty much credited with ending the era of the corseted female silhouette, and she introduced designs that were known for comfort and practicality. We can thank her for jersey fabric, the tweed suit, and the little black dress. Oh, and we can also thank her for making suntanning a symbol of privilege and leisure.

Anyway, this tweed dress is right on trend this season, and thanks to the short sleeves, it’s perfect for the warm fall weather we’re having.

I wasn’t sure about sizing, so I ordered the 6 and the 8, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the 6 fit. It’s on the shorter side, but that’s typical for a shift dress.

I love the buttons on the hem and the short blouson sleeves. Here’s a closeup of the sleeve detail. It’s a little more tailored and sophisticated than a puff sleeve, but it adds interest and helps balance out the hips for those who have narrower shoulders.

The button hem is another fun detail, and I’m happy to report that the tweed isn’t stiff at all. In fact, it must have some stretch to it because it gives as you move around. I kept it on after the shoot and wore it with flats to run some errands, and it was very comfortable to sit and move around in.

This dress is fully lined so I didn’t feel any need to wear a slip with it, but I am wearing my trusty Spanx Shape Your Day girl shorts.

I carried my trusty R Minkoff satchel. I ordered it off of Amazon.com several years ago, and it’s still going strong. It’s one of those bags I bought on a whim, and I wasn’t sure if I really needed it at the time, but I reach for it a lot. I just wish I hadn’t lost the crossbody strap — sometimes it would be nice to have that option, but I would usually just carry it on my arm or in my hand anyway.

In case you aren’t aware, the prices on Amazon Fashion fluctuate significantly, and right now it’s back up to almost full price, but it was down to $150 last week, so it’s one you have to watch. Incidentally, this cognac one is marked down to $155.

For shoes, I wore my black mules once again. I know, these have been on serious repeat lately, but they seem to go with so much! They’re pricey, but I got them during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale at 40% off. I almost left them in the store that first day, but my sales associate convinced me to bring them home in case they sold out, and told me I could always return them… but clearly that didn’t happen.

For a more budget-friendly option, I think these or these would also look great with this dress. I can also see wearing tights and tall boots with this dress in the wintertime — maybe with a black leather jacket on top, or even a burgundy!

Finally, I accessorized with a long silver pendant, my go-to silver link bracelet, and these pearl drop earrings. The earrings are sold out, but this pair is similar, and I think they would look great with this dress.

  1. Good Morning Jo-Lynne, Sorry you are not feeling your best right now, and I hope a Dr. visit will reduce some of the unknowns.. You’ve had an extremely busy summer and a lot of changes in your life as of late so don’t be too hard on yourself. I’m glad you took the day yesterday for you time and had a nice visit with your son. This dress looks great on you and is so classy. Love the items you’ve styled under $50. I think I’ll be looking into some of these or at least similar. Hope you have a great day. Good luck with your new FWTFL program:)

    Karen

  2. You look darling in this dress! I LOVE your blog and look forward to reading it and get so many ideas from you. I’m sure you enjoyed your son being home this weekend. I hope PA. isn’t being too affected by FLORENCE. God bless all involved!

  3. It’s so funny how often you style things that are similar to something I already have. I think it probably means I have too many clothes, LOL.
Anyway, I have a short sleeved tweed dress that looks extremely similar to this, but I think that the tweed is heavier. I’ve only ever worn it in the winter with black tights and booties, but now that I see this on you I think I’ll give it a try for fall when our weather gets just a bit cooler, I could probably wear it with bare legs and black pumps once it gets down to the 60s or so.
    Have a great day!

    1. ALSO I totally just ordered that tan bag from your email and am sorely tempted to order the scarf as well… I’ve got quite a few but it’s super cute and I know those colors would look great on me. The bag will be a GREAT addition to my wardrobe, I’ve legitimately needed a tan one for a while now and have been reluctant to drop serious cash on one so this was perfect. Thank you.

      1. That scarf IS really cute, and the price is pretty good too. I find that Sole Society scarves tend to sell out fast so if you like it, I’d grab one! SO glad that bag works for you. We shot a few looks with it this morning, and Alison loved it too.

  4. This is the perfect fall dress! I love all the tips you gave on how to wear it with different leather jackets and boots too. I am also enjoying the extra close up photos of different details in the outfits of this faĺl series. Your blog just keeps getting better and better.
Praying for renewed energy and health for you,my favorite blogger ( seriously, you’re my fave. I love fashion so I subscribe to a lot of blogs, but yours is the best!)

  5. What a pretty dress!  I love the detail on the sleeves and the buttons on the front add interest.  You look so nice in it, as well!  Good luck with the FWTWL program.  I hope you are able to figure it all out and that you will get to the goal you’ve established, then maintain it.  Female issues can really affect us at times.  Have fun doing the photo shoot today!

  6. Cute dress. We did miss you yesterday but we knew your son was home. That’s what they do though when they come home. Visit friends. Ha I remember those days. Pray all is well with your health. I don’t think I could do the fast. I do think probiotics help.

  7. I am so very curious about FWTFL. I have been contemplating doing it-seems every time I read a blog someone is praising its simplicity and results. Can’t wait to read your opinion. Since the new program started today does that mean you can not start the next one for six weeks? Love the dress by the way!

  8. Bea- you – tiful! I am so excited tweed/plaid are trending this fall. I am in love! I am seeing that yellow purse on every blog lately! I may have to snap one up. thanks again for taking the time to post and keep us up to date!

  9. I saw this dress in Loft and fell in love with it! It is adorable. Our store did not carry it in petite so I will have to order. Thank you for featuring it.

  10. You look so nice in that tweed dress!  Loved the way you styled it and so glad you kept those cute shoes too!  I must agree with another comment, you’re blog just keeps getting better and better.  So glad you take time for yourself now and then to rest and relax  .

  11. I love the cut, fabric and details. It’s going to sell out quickly. If I still worked I would order it myself.
The black mules are a perfect accompaniment. Winner!

I was worried yesterday when there was no post. Hope you’re feeling better today. It has been a very busy stressful time for you with the move, decorating decisions, David going off to college and your blog. Time for some self care?

    1. Thanks, yeah, that is how I felt about yesterday. I almost sat down after church and wrote something up, and then I looked outside, and the sun was shining for the first time in DAYS and my pool is still pretty, and I decided I needed to go enjoy it. I’ve been feeling really wiped out, but I feel some better today. I feel like I generally take care of myself pretty well. I get lots of sleep and exercise regularly, but my cycles are really messed up and I think it’s taking its toll. I tell ya, getting old isn’t for the faint of heart! 🙂

  12. Love the details on the dress! The buttons on the hem are a nice touch. Hope you are feeling better. You are right, getting older ain’t for wimps! Hope your physician can help you. Enjoy the sunshine.

  13. Hi Jolynne,
I love getting your email and blog, but for some reason, I did not receive either today! I had to google you! I love your style and your writing is always so informative and helpful, so I missed your email today even though I did find your blog post. Never had this issue before so not sure why I did not receive it. If I need to resubscribe, I’ll be glad to do so–just let me know. Thanks again for being my personal fashion stylist!

  14. I love the tortoise shell  handle bag! Glad to see tweed fabrics coming back – Cute dress -I wonder if it comes in tall- will have to check it out.
Hope you get feeling better. It might be perimenopause starting. For me it started at 46 and presented many bothersome symptoms like messed up cycles, irritability, fatigue and vertigo. Then things got better when I turned 50, and I felt great. Unfortunately turning 51 changed things again and now I’m being hit really hard with menopause and it’s been tough (hot flashes and anxiety being the worst part!)

You’re absolutely right when you said “getting old is not for the faint of heart!” 😁😩

  15. Hi Jolynn, this outfit is stunning as usual. I’m seeing this outfit to fit perfectly on me when I have some business meetings, not the formal ones, I mean the regular day to day activities. Just want to ask you if you have in mind to start giving us more athleisure looks, maybe pair some tracksuit pants, jeggings, yoga pants or jeans with different sneakers, say nike, adidas or supergas. I’m noticing a lot of women wearing easy / sports clothes even to work, maybe at this time of year since the weather is not that cold.cold. Thanks, and keep it up as usual. Kim

  16. It seems that the comments on this post don’t go with the actual post. Ladies are mentioning a tortoise handle purse and I see a Rebecca Minkoff purse with leather handle. They are commenting on health issues and fasting and Dr visits and your son being home yet none of that is mentioned in the post. I am a little confused.

    1. Hey Ann. Yes, that would seem confusing! 🙂 They are referring to my email newsletter… it goes out every day with a link to the day’s blog post as well as a newsy introduction where I share a little bit of what’s going on in my life, and then usually another exclusive newsletter-only feature like a sale alert, product roundup, stuff like that. I also do a giveaway for newsletter subscribers each month. If you’re interested, you can sign up here: https://eepurl.com/cOBLrH

  17. This dress is such a classic and looks so fabulous on you! We are having such a hot September in south Georgia that I can barely stand the thought of wearing something tweed right now! LOL! I am SO READY for lower temps and lower humidity.

    1. Girl, I hear ya. It’s the same here. I’ve been ROASTING in these looks. I am beginning to wonder if we will ever have a fall this year! But as I recall, it was like this last year too. I think doing my fall fashion series in September is messing with my mind! LOL! I love warm weather and used to be happy when it lingered, but now that my calendar is aligning more with the fashion industry, I’m all messed up.
