Teen/Tween Back to School Outfits with Kohl’s

It’s hard to believe, but it’s mid-August and kids all over the country are gearing up to go back to school! This year I have a child starting middle school, one in high school, and one going off to college for the first time. Ironically, while they’re in 3 different schools, they all start classes on the same day. I’ve had several requests for more tween/teen fashion posts, so I was excited when my 7th grader agreed to model some tween Back to School outfits for us this year.

We’re actually partnering with Kohl’s to share about their Back to School promotion, including popular active-wear brands like Nike & Under Armour that rarely go on sale.

I’ve always had good luck shopping at Kohl’s for my kids. From the children’s department to juniors to young adults, they have a wide selection of on-trend styles at great prices.

Even though it will be warm here for a while yet, R’s wardrobe needs some replenishing for school, so she and I headed out to Kohl’s last week to see what we could find.

She’s really getting to be fun to shop with. She used to detest shopping for clothes, but lately she’s become a little fashionista with a definite sense of her own style, and it was a lot of fun to put together these school outfits with her. It helps that Kohl’s has a great selection of jeans, tops, footwear, and Back to School essentials like backpacks.

She’s really picky about her denim (she gets it from her momma, I guess!) so we were both happy to discover the DENIZEN from Levi’s brand. Neither of my girls have ever tried these before, but R found them very comfortable, and she likes the styling too.

She’s a jegging jeans girl through and through, so she ended up picking out two pairs of these low rise jegging jeans as well as a pair of the SO low rise twill jeggings in Berry.

This varsity stripe hoodie is super lightweight so it works with shorts now, and she can wear it with jeans later this fall. And we both thought these burgundy slip-on sneakers with the decorative flocking were really cute for her. Apparently they’re very comfortable too.

This mauve tee pairs perfectly with her grey jegging jeans, and the taupe ankle boots will go with so many of her outfits this fall.

She also picked up this boyfriend cardigan for layering. It’s got a nice, loose weave so she can start wearing it now over tanks and tees, and then she can wear it over a long-sleeve t-shirt when it gets colder.

Finally, she picked out a lightweight sweatshirt and capri leggings for gym days… and for playing pool with her dad after school.

The best thing about shopping at Kohl’s for Back to School is it’s a one-stop shop for clothes, shoes, activewear, socks and underwear, jewelry, backpacks, and even beauty products. Plus with their Kohl’s Cash offers and frequent promotions, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better value anywhere else.

Now that we’re all set with some great tween Back to School outfits, R’s starting to get excited about a new school year. She’s already started band camp, and later this week she gets to visit the middle school and find her locker and walk through her class schedule, so it’s about to get real!

The next hurdle will be getting my son off to college… #holdme

I know the next few years are going to fly, so I’m going to do my best to soak it all in and make every moment count.

  1. Such a great post with pictures of your beautiful daughter!  Wishing you well on all the “firsts” coming your way.

  2. I would love to see you feature women’s clothes from Kohl’s. (It’s a local store for me, and much more suited to my budget.)

  3. Wow, she picked out some great looks! It must be so fun to have a willing shopping partner! I am a mom to 2 boys but they both enjoy shopping so I am lucky! We don’t start until after Labor Day but as a teacher, the back to school feeling is in the air!

  4. Very cute outfits that compliment the beautiful Becca! Prayers that all your children have a wonderful school year, and for you as you see the oldest off to college. I always enjoy your posts and the tidbits you share about your family gives just enough personal touch!

  5. Great post. Your daughter is lovely…..and I have a feeling has learned a lot of fashion style  from you!!!!

  6. I was one of those readers who asked for this post, so thank you. Your daughter is adorable, and a good sport. We also enjoy Kohl’s, but my daughter is super picky so it gets a little overwhelming for us both! The pieces you are featuring are totally Julia’s style, so that will make the shopping much easier! Every time you post about your kids, I think they sound just like mine in a lot of ways. Lol. Except, sadly, I don’t have a middle child. #wishihadonemorebaby#! Good luck with all the new transitions in your life. Sending virtual hugs!

  7. Though my kids are long out of college, I enjoyed this post so much! Your very pretty daughter has great style – no surprise there!! Thank you for sharing – and taking me back to some cherished memories!!!

  8. Cute outfits! I wish I could get my daughter to shop somewhere other than Hollister, American Eagle and Aeropostale, lol.
BTW, the bottom of the post says it is sponsored by Macy’s, so you may want to update that 🙂

  9. She’s a natural! I love all her fashion pics because they were basic but tendy and most of all, age appropriate and conservative. I see so many girls her age wearing clothes that are too revealing and inappropriate for school. My daughter and I actually shopped at Kohl’s yesterday because she needed a belt but the lines were very long so we just paid for the belt and didn’t look around much. Glad your daughter had some luck and glad she shared her cute outfits with us today.

  10. You have a lovey daughter who looks wonderful in the outfits she is modeling. My 14 year old granddaughter goes to private school so it’s uniforms for her. My 17 year old granddaughter goes to a different private school and can choose what she wants but is going thru an “emo” phase (rebelling against years of uniforms) so her clothing choices are black! Her mom and I are hoping this phase is over soon😮.

  11. Becca is so dang cute!  And what a great model!  I have worn the Denizen jeans by Levi’s before and loved them!  A lot of the schools in GA started a couple of weeks ago.  You are definitely going to be dealing with lots of emotions and firsts in the upcoming week, but it’s all good!  I’m sure you will shed some tears, but you are going to have a lot of fun and exciting times.  Have a great day!

  12. LOVE! Thank your daughter for doing this! I need this kind of thing for my 7th and 10th graders. I’m ordering a couple of these items today! 🙂

  13. What a cutie! She looks perfect in those outfits and ready to shine at school.  All the best to Becca as she starts a new year.

  14. Love the post! Your daughter is lovely and a natural as a model. Its nice to see her featured and to see her in modest clothes where she is covered up.

I’m a huge Kohl’s fan as well and agree with the other comment to feature Kohl’s women’s fashion in a future post if you can.

  15. Nice outfits! She has good taste. My daughter is Becca’s age so this will be helpful as we shop for back to school.

  16. Your daughter is so cute! We started school last week & Kohl’s came through for us again this year too. My daughter (14/Freshman) picked out the same cardigan only in gold. She ended up with some boyfriend cropped jeans since she is on a growing spurt right now and we decided those would tide her over until the weather turns colder and we’d look for jeans then. We were worried about the length. We found a cute top with cut out ladder sleeves too that we purchased. So nice we have a source for reasonably priced clothes for them as they move into more adult sizes! Good luck to all three this coming week! Hope they have a great school year!

  17. My daughter, Caroline, is also going into 7th grade just like your Becca. Looks like we need to make a trip to Kohl’s soon for some back to school clothes!

  18. Becca is a super cute model!  Fun to work with her, I’m sure.  You found a lot of cute back to school things.

  19. Thank you Becca for sharing your style and great fashion sense! I love all of your choices especially the burgundy slip ons and the booties! You are beautiful young lady! I wish you a very successful and happy school year! Be Blessed!

  20. Becca has grown up so much! She’s a beautiful young lady, and I love her sense of style.
Sending you hugs and emotional support as your son goes off to college….. my daughter graduated from college this past May, and I clearly remember the day we drove her to college and unpacked her things in her dorm. I cried most of the way home. #imacryer
Again, thank you to Becca for agreeing to model, she’s a natural!

  21. Thank you both for doing this post! My 12 year old daughter hates shopping because she never finds things (kids department is too childish for her and juniors is mostly too adult for her). But she liked pretty much all of the things shown here and hopefully will fit her in xs. It would be soooo helpful if you daughter would do a fashion post monthly or once a season! Thank you again!!

  22. Such a cute model. Love all her outfits. What a great idea to do a teen blog. All my grands wear uniforms to school but still enjoyed it.

  23. Love all the outfits, especially the stripe hoodie and cardigan. All the outfits coordinate so well! Becca is beautiful and a natural! All the best to your kids and you and Paul as you begin a new school year! Great post, Jo-Lynne!

  24. I know I should comment on the fashion and the deals you’re helping readers find because it’s obvious this post was a lot of work, but all really want to comment on is how cute your daughter looks in these shots. Oh my gosh, she has the sweetest smile!

  25. Well the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree lol… and what a great idea for the moms as well as girls in her age group. She did a fantastic job.. I really like the second outfit with the burgundy sneakers… she’s definitely got a grip on styling… what an exciting year for all your kids..,

  26. She’s so cute. Great post. Be sure you tell her I like her looks she chose. Can’t believe school is starting for so many. Crazy. In Oregon it’s always day after Labor Day. Then they get out mid June. You really are getting a lot of rain. We are having drought in Oregon this summer.  Today is suppose to be 90.

  27. Cute clothes on a darling girl. I like those clothes for school, they are definitely for a girl, look comfortable and neat on her. Not matchy matchy and great colors. Paul beware the boys her age will be around soon
My dad would sit in the living room and read the paper. My sister’s boyfriend named dad old stone face. Ha ha. Just a suggestion. Enjoy your year

  28. Jolynne…I so enjoyed your blog today. Your daughter is so pretty and has a Great sense of style, just like her Mom. My Granddaughters who one is just starting in High School and the other entering the working world, for now, has the same sense of style as your daughter. Which I am very happy. Imagine this, but I wear the same style, Of course, my jeans aren’t as tight. But I am retired and I love my jeans and tees and sweaters and sweatshirts. Thank you for this post. This brought back some really good memories.

  29. I understand my daughter is going to high school. I tried to get her to shop while we were in NYC over weekend she got a hoodie and sneakers. So this post is helpful i will have take to khols over weekend to see what they have for her. This is a great posted your daughter is too cute !

  30. Very cute outfits! I really like the cardigan and sneakers. They are things I would wear too. I’m quite a bit older than your daughter but just a hair bit older than you (I’m 47).
I’ll be thinking of you on Friday when you take your son to college. It’s an exciting and sad day rolled into one. Hopefully no rain on move in day!
I just put my 18 year old son on a plane to Greeley, Colorado for a job interview about 45 mins ago. He was planning to start an apprenticeship for electrician after deciding not to go to college. Now a dream job of making custom doors, trim and vanities for high end houses has come up ( my brother in law’s brother’s company). He was so excited when we said our goodbyes at the airport. I’m happy and sad all in one. So we will see what becomes of his interview and what he thinks of it out there.

  31. Watching the news. Philly really is having record flooding. Are you guys ok in your area?  Hot and sunny in Oregon. Crazy.

  32. What a beauty Becca is! I adore her freckles and hair color, and even though it’s very different coloring than yours I think she favors you! Great outfits too!
