Wearable Sweater Trends for Fall 2015

Sweater trends are changing rapidly, and this season I’m noticing a huge shift. When I go to find current shopping links for some of my older sweaters, the classic styles are becoming harder and harder to find.

Sweater trends for fall 2015 are longer and oversized. Chunky knits are everywhere. Many are longer in the back than in the front (that’s called a hi-low hem), and the other other big trend is the split hem. Capes and ponchos are popular, and I’m still seeing a lot of tunics too. Even cardigans are oversized this season. Oh, and turtlenecks are back and cannot be ignored.

While I generally prefer a more fitted silhouette, I’m enjoying the reprieve from body conscious styles. The key to wearing an oversized sweater without looking like you’ve gained the Freshman 15 is to keep your pants figure hugging. Whether you wear jeans, trousers, or even a skirt, you want your bottom half to look as slender as possible to offset the bulkiness of the top. A shoe with a heel always helps to elongate the line of the leg and make you look slimmer.

At first these styles feel frumpy, but once you get used to them, it’s kind of fun for a change. And the best part about it is, you can ditch your shapewear! Ha!

(By the way, LOFT is running $25 off all full-price sweaters. You are welcome.)

Okay, let’s break it down. You’re going to see a lot of overlap between the styles I mention below, but I tried to separate them out for some semblance of organization.

  1. Thank you for all of the work you put into this post for us! I know it took a lot of time and patience! My favorite is the red lose turtleneck that is also lose and long from Loft. I will check out Kohl’s since they at close to my home, I have several coupons for there, and they are more economical.

    Have a blessed day!

  2. It’s true– it’s hard to find the classics this season. I’ve looked everywhere for thin cotton V-neck sweaters that aren’t tunic length and can’t find them. I may be forced to try some of the new styles. I struggle with the longer length and chunky knits though because if you’re already . . . chunky, I feel like the added thickness just isn’t flattering. But I can see it’s all about trying things on and going with skinny bottoms. Got a cute black, short knit poncho from LeTote and I love it!
Thanks for putting this post together, Jo Lynne!

  3. Hmm. While I like the idea of oversized sweaters, in reality they completely overwhelm my petite figure. I am 5’4″ and have an athletic build (no chest, slim hips). I get lost in the big sweaters. I’ve taken to sizing down and that seems to help somewhat, but frankly this trend is just not that flattering on me. Suggestions?

  4. Thank you for all your hard work… this is very informative….I will hop over to Loft and see what I can order…God Bless You!

  5. Love the orange one for Nordstrom. Also loved the options from Loft. Might need to start making my Christmas list!

  6. Well……my fav is the last one…..the cashmere from Ann Taylor! But sadly, not in my budget. ???? Maybe I can find a budget friendly option. I also really like the first one, and I love that color. I love the chunky knits with jeans or cords.

    1. I have no clue what this year will bring, but I know last year Ann Taylor had AMAZING deals on their cashmere on black friday. If you like that one it might be worth checking then!
