What I Wore: Color Block Poncho + Ponte Skinny Pants

I’ve got another outfit for you today. This one is from my capsule. I wore it to church on Sunday morning and then over to my in-laws’ for the afternoon. We took these pictures at their place for a change of scenery.

Most of these pieces are old and you’ve probably seen them all before, but I’ll try to find similar links and I’m giving some tips for wearing ponchos!

This Color-Block Poncho is by Splendid. I picked it up on the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale early last fall, and I love the quality. This one is sort of similar; it’s the closest I can find. You can see all of their available ponchos here. I love that it actually has armholes so it stays in place.

My pants are lined with fleece, so they’re super warm. They came from Goodnight Macaroon a few years ago, and I wear them a lot in the wintertime because they’re so cozy and flattering. Unfortunately I haven’t found anything quite like them since, but ponte pants or even black jeans would achieve the same look.

I know some of you feel you can’t wear ponchos, but the key is to choose pants that have a snug fit to offset the volume of the poncho on top. Heels also help to visually elongate the body and create a slimmer look.

You also want to make sure the poncho is cut in a flattering way. I have learned through trial and error that I look better in ponchos that dip in the front and are thin enough to drape nicely. I don’t care as much for the ones that are cut straight across the hip area, like this one, because that is where my body is the widest.

And let’s discuss these boots.

I adore these wedge ankle boots. They were sent to me from Marmi Shoes last fall, and they’re currently on sale for $157 (originally $225.) They come in medium and narrow widths. These ankle boots are so super comfortable. I wore them all day and my feet didn’t hurt a bit. They’re even soft on the inside, so I didn’t bother wearing socks. I know, I’m weird. Of course, thin black socks would work perfectly well with them, and they would have kept my feet warmer!

I carried my port Mini Crosby Crossbody for color. It’s on sale for $130 at Amazon. The bracelets were sent to me from Alex and Ani, and the Half Moon Earrings are Silpada. I thought a necklace would interfere with the neckline so I went for larger earrings instead.

I just wore a plain black t-shirt under my poncho. I like the monochromatic look of the outfit. Mine is old, but this one is similar.

      1. Almost convinced to buy the boots – but how do you know if you need narrow or medium. I’m just not sure – I like my feet to be able to ‘spread’ vs. be crammed -lol. I can’t find any way to determine that measurement.

  1. Great outfit! It all works so well together.

My newest “Jo-Lynne” shipment came this week from Nordy’s: 3 pairs of Sam Edelman Felicia flats (bone-LOVE!, black and red snake), lush roll tunic in olive and port, and last but not least the green Caslon tunic sweater! The shoes were a splurge at $99 each, but I’ll wear them all year round. The tunics and sweater were all on sale. Purging my old stuff and replacing with better quality clothes (thanks to you!).

    Have a loving Valentine’s weekend!

  2. I love this poncho on you. i have one ordered and fingers crossed I’ll work on my petite body. I plan on wearing skinny jeans. Hopefully, it’ll work out.
Your wedged ankle boots look great on you, too. I’ve tried not rolling my jeans or whatever pants I’m wearing when wearing mine and let them bunch like yours, but it would drive me crazy! I know, I’m weird, ha!
Enjoy your time at the salon????

  3. I love the combination! Might have to be on the lookout for a poncho for next year. Hoping to find one on sale since it is the end of the season. Today I am wearing an outfit inspired by one of your olive skinny pants outfits. It really fun to create new combinations with items already in my closet but I didn’t think to pair together. Thanks for all the pictures you post!

  4. I just started following you. You look great in all your outfits and thank you so much for sharing. I am about the same size as you
are, but a bit older. Love all your outfits, very modest and chic and feel that even though I am older they are all appropriate for me!

    Thank you!

  5. Love this as it changes up your silhouette! Was feeling a bit like you were in skinnies and tunic with a long necklace much of the time. This is refreshing!

    1. Yeah, it is easy to get in a rut this time of year! However, I’m a big fan of finding a formula that works, and sticking to it. 🙂 I think spring fashion will be refreshing!

  6. How did you decide how to wear the cuffs of your pants? I know I see pants rolled up or tucked into the booties, but yours are just kind of sitting on top of the booties like half in and half out. I think yours looks great, but I hadn’t thought to wear them like that.

    1. I just pulled on the booties, and the pants fell that way over the front of the booties, so I left them. 🙂 The pants have a fleece lining and are quite thick, so cuffing them wouldn’t work. I often wear them under tall boots, and they look nice that way, but I wanted to wear my ankle boots so I gave it a try, and it worked. If this hadn’t worked, I would have tried my black high heel ankle boots that have a lower shaft.

It’s a lot of trial and error. Here is a whole post on how to wear ankle boots. https://jolynneshane.com/how-to-wear-ankle-boots.html
