What I Wore Lately Vol. 26

Greetings, friends! It’s time for another edition of What I Wore Lately. This post basically answers the question, But what do you really wear? Yes, I get that a lot!

I’m also including some try-ons from the past month. But first, here’s what I’ve worn over the past week.

What I Wore Lately

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and 135 pounds-ish, with a slight hourglass shape. Unless I say otherwise, I’m wearing a 6/28 in pants/jeans, a small in tops, a 6 in dresses/jumpsuits, and size 8 shoe.

Last Saturday, I worked for a few hours in the morning, and then R and I ran out to Home Goods and the grocery store before gathering with friends on their patio later that afternoon for an early dinner.

I decided to keep it uber casual with my INDOORSY tee from the #NSale with my Gap jean shorts. It was the day our weather started to cool down, and the long sleeves with shorts combo seemed appropriate.

Someone asked me in my last post why I don’t wear my crossbody bags across the body… I usually do when I’m out and about. When I take these pictures, I usually just grab it and put it on my shoulder, and sometimes I carry that way when I’m out too. But if I’m shopping or want to be hands-free, I definitely wear it this way.

And yes, I carry my good bags everywhere. I’m not one to save nice things for a special occasion, they’re meant to be used and enjoyed! And I’m also not worried about picking up Covid from surfaces at this point. I just wash my hands when I get home.

I wore this easy swing dress to church on Sunday. It did shrink a bit when I washed it, but it still fits well. (I hung it to dry.) You can’t beat a $20 dress that fits this nicely!

It’s rather thin, but it was warm enough on Sunday to wear without a top layer. I’ll put a denim jacket on top and continue wearing it for a few more weeks.

That evening, we hosted friends for dinner, and I changed into my ATM cheetah tee and boyfriend jeans.

Yikes, don’t add up the cost of this outfit… both this tee and the jeans were #NSale purchases, so I paid a lot less than the full retail price for both. This Amazon tee is a really good budget alternative. (See the Try-Ons section for more on that.)

I had PT on Monday, so I wore joggers and a tie dye tee.

I wore this next outfit to the mall on Tuesday. I had a couple of store pickups, and it was so nice to get a change of scenery. I prolonged the outing by treating myself to a Kale Caesar Salad at Sweetgreen — my first since Covid! I sat by myself in the food court and scrolled Instagram while I ate.

This adorable Rails utility jacket was a major score from Trunk Club last spring. I got it for 65% off, but because of Covid, I hardly got a chance to wear it, so I’m going to try to make up for that this fall.

I love the mini cheetah print and the shorter style with the drawstring hem. It’s kind of military jacket meets bomber jacket. The material is also lightweight and very soft.

Unfortunately, this print is sold out, and the solid options are all full-price. A few of those were part of the #NSale, so it may go on sale again at some point. I’ll keep an eye on them for you.

These rag & bone Cate skinnies were another stellar sale find. They were marked down to $52.50 a few weeks ago, so I snapped them up. I love this light wash with minimal distressing, and they have the perfect 27″ inseam.

I told you all about them at the time, and they sold out quickly. There are a few sizes back in stock right now, but the sale price isn’t nearly as good as it was before.

When I got home, I was chilly, and I wanted to be comfortable for the rest of the day so I switched into a sweatshirt and my Birks.

I had a photo shoot on Wednesday, and then I went to a chiropractor appointment, so it was joggers once again!

Who remembers this NYC tee from last fall? I didn’t seem to reach for it much this summer, but it goes so well with joggers and a denim jacket. I expect I’ll be wearing it a lot again this fall. I wish J.Crew would bring it back!

Thursday was a lazy day. I was feeling really tired, I think from the chiro appt the day before. I actually went back to bed and slept for a while mid-day.

Then I rallied and put on some clothes and makeup to work for the rest of the afternoon even though I wasn’t going anywhere.

I always feel like my family doesn’t want to see my bare face hanging out while we’re eating dinner. Now that everyone’s at home all the time, I try to put my face on at some point in the day.

And that brings us to Friday! I had a hair appointment yesterday morning, and I wore workout clothes because I was planning to go out for a run/walk either before or after. That didn’t really work out, but anyway…

We went out with friends last night. It was chilly and rather gloomy all day, and we were dining outside, so I tried to dress for both warmth and style. At first, I put on my cheetah tee and black jeans and denim jacket…

But then I went outside and sat on the deck for a bit and realized how cold it was, so I changed at the last minute and put on a sweater.

FYI, these jeans are on sale again! I got them during the #NSale, but they must be on sale somewhere else right now, and Nordstrom is price-matching, so they’re 25% off.

I don’t know how they look on your computer screen, but I would call them off-black. I don’t know if they’re “washed black” exactly but they do look faded. It’s a nice wash, though, not at all acid washed. My jean jacket is 25% off too.

Try-On Haul + Trunk Club Unboxing

Okay, so here are the try-on pix I’ve been saving up all month. I’m only sharing things that did not make it into 22 Days of Fall Fashion. Otherwise, this would be waaaaay too long.

Let’s start with what came from Trunk Club. If you’re not familiar with Trunk Club, it’s a virtual styling service owned and run by Nordstrom. They’ve changed things up recently, and you are no longer assigned a personal stylist. Instead, you have a team of stylists, which I think basically means, you just get whoever is on duty at the time.

I’m not excited about this change, as I think part of what made Trunk Club unique was the personal aspect of it, but I decided to give it a shot.

Madewell Colburn Stripe Play Coziest Textured Yarn Cardigan Sweater, size Small

This sweater is cozy and soft and stretchy, and I like the different stripe patterns.

It’s on the shorter side, so good for pairing with higher rise jeans, but I don’t care for it with the button fly jeans. Since the sweater has buttons down the front as well, it’s just too much to wear them together.

You could also wear it unbuttoned over a tank or tee, but it’s a little more modern to wear it buttoned-up. Of course, the nice thing is, you can wear it both ways, so that makes it more versatile than your typical pullover.

It runs true to size, or you could size up for a slouchier fit. I like it, but I don’t love it, so I sent it back.

Madewell Button Front Crop Skinny Jeans, size 28

This is a good pair of medium wash jeans without a lot of distressing. They are very comfortable; the denim is soft and stretchy.

They have a 25 1/2″ inseam, so they’re a crop length, and of course they have the exposed button-fly, which is very much on trend right now.

The rear pocket placement is good, and I like the size of the pockets as well. The finished hem makes them look a little more refined, since so many jeans have a raw hem right now.

I feel like they fit and flatter very well, and I like the crop length for wearing with ankle boots. All that said, I just don’t need them right now. My denim situation is out of control, so I decided to send them back.

Halogen Cowl Neck Shell, size Small

Well, this is quite snug, isn’t it!?! The color is gorgeous, but it is not very forgiving. Maybe if I sized up to the medium… I dunno. The cowl is kind of janky. It’s hard to get it to lay nicely.

I will say, though. The material is very soft and comfortable, although it’s rather thin. Anyway. I guess it goes without saying that I sent this back.

Topshop Tilda Crop Denim Jacket, size 6

I love the idea of a washed black denim jacket, but I’m not crazy about the cropped length. Below, you can see it with a black tee and black jeans… better, but I still don’t see myself getting a lot of wear out of it.

These black straight ankle jeans are very on trend, but I’m just not quite there yet with the straight ankle look… although these are almost a flare, depending on your angle.

I need to try them with ankle boots, but I’m sure they will buckle on top. I always have that problem, probably because I’m not quite tall enough to pull it off.

Halogen Balloon Sleeve Sweater, size Small

I like this sweater in theory — it’s thick and chunky, and the shaker stitch and v-neck is a nice combo. But it’s kind of scratchy, and the v-neck is too low for my comfort level.

It’s also longer than I prefer, and kind of shapeless.

Here’s a look at the back, and it also gives you a better view of the jeans.

The balloon sleeve is fun, but on top of the already voluminous body of the sweater, it’s all just a bit too much. It went back.

Now we’re moving on to some of the items I’ve ordered.

Caslon V-Neck Slub Sweater, size Small

This pullover is lightweight and comfortable. I really like the thin stripes. It also comes in red and blue, but I like the tan and white stripe. Neutrals are very on trend right now, and it has an effortless vibe that I really like.

I also like the way it has a slight v-neck in the back. By the way, this is how the Madewell button front skinny crop jeans look from the back.

I like this fine gauge knit, and the v-neck is very flattering. It has a traditional fit with small side slits and contrasting trim at the cuffs and hem.

I also think this will be really nice next spring with white jeans. It’s a keeper!

Caslon Camo Jacquard V-Neck Sweater, size Small

I ended up keeping this one too. It’s a little thicker than the striped slub sweater above, and I like the subtle camo pattern. It’s 71% cotton/29% nylon, so perfect for those of you who can’t wear wool.

It’s soft and comfortable, and I appreciate the raglan sleeves — so much more flattering than a drop shoulder.

I also really like the contrasting trim at the cuffs, hem, and neck. The v-neckline is flattering. All in all, this is a nice throw-on-and-go piece to have in the fall wardrobe.

Jamison Penelope Tie Dye Crew Pullover, size Small

This sweater has such a unique pattern and color combination. I love it! I also really like the fine gauge ribbed knit. It’s very soft and high quality.

It’s a bit shorter than some, at 22 1/4″ long, and it says to dry-clean, so that’s a consideration.

I tried it with a few different pants, trying to figure out how I like it best. It pairs really nicely with grey.

And here it is with those Frame straight ankle jeans above.

I dunno… I’m undecided on this one. Mainly because of the price. I like it, but it’s quite memorable, and I’m not sure I’d get my cost per wear out of it.

Caslon Colorblock Sweater, size Small

This sweater is really soft and cozy, it’s that spongy knit that’s so popular right now. Here’s a look at the back.

I like the wider neckline and raglan sleeves, and it’s a nice length — 23″ regular front length; 25″ back length.

I thought I would like the colorblocking, but I think I prefer the solid options. I also have it in the coral, and you will be seeing that styled sometime next week!

Sanctuary Spot On Popover Sweater Forest Camo, size Small

I’ve been holding onto these pictures for a while. I styled the cardigan version of this sweater in a post a couple weeks ago, but I ended up keeping this pullover instead.

It looks really good paired with washed black denim, but it also works with blue jeans and true black pants as well.

Here’s a look at the back. I just think it’s really cute and flattering.

I really like the shape of the neckline, the length, the cut through the body… everything about it! Simple, but super cute.

Definitely a keeper. It comes in 3 other patterns/colors, if you don’t care for the camo. Oh, and it’s 65% cotton/35% nylon, so perfect for those who can’t wear wool.

Talbots Merci Boucle Embroidered Sweatshirt, size Small

This is a really nice, elevated sweatshirt for those days you want to be comfortable but not sloppy. Talbots is doing BOGO 50% off right now.

WHBM Jetsetter Tee, size XS

I’ve had this Jetsetter Tee from WHBM before in solids, but I love the ombre effect in this one.

Unfortunately, it turned to fall really fast here in PA, and I don’t think I’ll get to wear it much this year. I sent it back, but if you order, I recommend sizing down one.

525 America Emma Pullover, size Small

This is another sweater from Evereve. I love the ombre, again, and it has a nice relaxed fit, ribbed knit, on-shoulder seams, vented hem. Super cute.

Here are some more angles… it’s really fun, and also 100% cotton, for those who appreciate that.

I like it, and I did get it for 10% off, but I’m still not sure I’m keeping it. So many sweaters… I have to make some choices. What do y’all think?

J.Crew Tipped beach sweater, size Small

This sweater is cute and summery, with a very loose weave.

I like the navy trim on the collar and cuffs, but it’s final sale, FYI. I returned it because it’s a little long/baggy on me.

Goodthreads Women’s Heritage Fleece Basic Jogger Pant, size Small

These joggers are kind of old-school, very thick and not super soft, but not uncomfortable either. I kind of like the effect.

They seem well-made, and they could be a fun addition to your jogger collection if you wear them a lot.

I also like the length — they’re almost cropped, but not quite.

The price is right too! I didn’t keep them because I have quite a few already, and I’m hoping to not wear them quite as much once I graduate PT in a few weeks. But I still recommend them if you like them.

Yidarton Women’s T Shirt Leopard Print Top, size Small

This is the dupe for the pricey ATM cheetah tee I styled this week. I’m pretty impressed with the color and print. It’s a nice, soft material. Seems like decent quality for the price point.

ZESICA Striped Color Block Cardigan, Size Medium

I ordered this colorblock cardigan, thinking it was a nice budget alternative to the Madewell one that’s always popular.

It’s definitely a different material, but it’s not bad. It seems like decent quality. I don’t know why I ordered a medium, though. I would want to get my usual small.

Free People Betty Long Sleeve T-Shirt, size Small

And finally, I ordered this because I had a grey one last fall that I loved and wore a ton. This one seems to be even lower-cut. I had a hard time keeping it from showing my bra.

I do like it a lot, I just wish the neckline wasn’t so low. It comes in a bunch of colors, but this blush is really pretty.

And that’s a wrap! We’re off to Philly for the day, so I had to rush through these try-ons. If you have any questions about fit or sizing, don’t hesitate to ask.

  1. Hi Jo-Lynne,  Did you find those Vince sneakers to be TTS? I ordered the old color from Saks, but my usual size felt very snug.  Wondering whether to reorder them in a half size bigger or whether they just run narrow?! xo Nipa

  2. You tried on so many nice things!  I would hate to have to make a decision about which sweater(s) to keep because I like so many of them.  Since I’ve just changed over my clothes, I am able to refrain from buying any of them since I know I don’t NEED them.  I am very interested in the GoodThreads joggers and will be checking them out.  I hope y’all have an awesome day in Philly!  How long does it take you to get into the city?  On My Lottery Dream Home last night, one couple was looking for a new home in Bangor, PA.  It looks like a really cute town.

  3. Hi Jo-Lynne
Thank you so much for including fabric content in the sweater descriptions! I truly cannot wear wool, and spend a lot of time researching fabric content. In need of a few updated sweaters and will try a few of these.

    1. Ditto what Emily said: allergic to any wool so appreciate you taking the time to comment on the fabric. Have a fab trip to Philly! We all need a change from our usual now and again.

  4. Hi Jo-Lynne! It’s a very cool and crisp morning, perfect sweater weather! Have fun in the city. My favorite sweater is one you returned, the J.Crew beach sweater! I love how it fits on you, and I would definitely wear a light-weight denim shirt layered underneath. I am waiting for my second Amazon top. Never thought I’d be ordering clothes from Amazon, but my first Daily Ritual leopard print top is fantastic and my new one is a stripe and animal print color block. Maybe a little trendy, that’s why I don’t want to spend a lot of money on it! Love your “What I Wore” posts!

  5. I really enjoy these posts about what you’ve worn and all the new items you’re styling for us.  One particular thing I appreciate is how you wear long sleeves all the way to the wrist, and not push them up in all the pictures.  Some bloggers will show long-sleeve tops, sweaters….etc. pushed up in EVERY picture.  As a very tall lady, I look at how they fall on your wrist…..are they extra long, just right, or on the verge of being short?  This allows me to see if I might possibly be able to ear the extra long ones or maybe wear the ones that are almost too short as a 3/4 sleeve on myself.  Sigh…..those of us with crazy long arms have to think of these things!  I always tell my husband it is probably a good thing that I don’t fit in a lot of regular clothes because I’d have soooooooo many more!  LOL!

  6. Of all of the tops you showed us, my favourite is the Caslon striped sweater. It fits you like a dream and appears to be a great neutral to have. Enjoy your day in Philly.

  7. I ordered the Amazon cheetah tee and it’s supposed to arrive today.  I also ordered the two ring belt “Gucci dupe” and it arrived yesterday and boy is it nice. The packaging impressed me first. It was in a plastic cover then in a nice box and the quality is really good for an $11 belt. I’m going to try the color block cardigan next. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend. Enjoy your outing to Philly.

  8. So fun to see all the cute sweaters.  I have followed you
for a number of years and have learned so much about fit!
Realized …I had fallen into the big longer sweater look…
despite being smaller.  Thank you for all the excellent examples
and trends as to what works!

  9. I too have that Two by Vince Camuto denim jacket in S and it’s perfect. I also have the same jacket in a faded black. It’s exactly the same fit and just as perfect. I don’t think it’s available anywhere anymore but if you’re interested you could probably find it on eBay or someplace similar. I think I bought it at Nordstrom a couple of years ago. (I also have a white version. The brand just fits me!)

  10. Luv this post! Have you done a post recently with the dark gray jeans? I was thinking about adding a pair to my wardrobe. Thank you!
