What I Wore This Week 05.18.18

Good morning from the rainy northeast. I guess London is getting all the sunshine this weekend, which is appropriate, I suppose!

I’ve been watching the BBC coverage of the royal wedding ever since I woke up around 5:30AM. I’m glad I didn’t set my alarm to get up earlier, because I don’t feel like I missed much. As I’m typing, I’m toggling back and forth between the tab with the wedding coverage, waiting anxiously for Ms. Markle to arrive. I’ve only seen the glimpse of her in the car with her mom, and I’m so excited to see her dress.

As I’m watching all of the wedding guests sitting in the chapel, waiting for the ceremony to begin, I can’t help but wonder how anyone sees anything around all of those ginormous hats. That would make me incredibly cranky. Yes, these are the things I think about.

So now I’m watching William and Harry walking in and sitting down in the chapel together. Of course I’m old enough to remember when they were born, their procession behind their mother’s casket, and Harry’s tumultuous young adult years. It’s so incredibly touching to see them talking and smiling at each other like typical brothers would on one’s wedding day. Aren’t you dying to know what they’re talking about?

Meghan’s mother was just escorted out of the car… can you even imagine what she must be thinking and feeling? I mean… her daughter is marrying British royalty. It’s not exactly something most American moms plan for.

Oh, wow. The Queen is wearing a gorgeous green suit. I read somewhere that she always wears bright colors so she can be seen in the crowds.

Okay, so I wasn’t intending to give y’all a play by play, but I can’t stop watching and sharing my thoughts. I’m watching this alone — my girls have no interest whatsoever, which is very telling of the next generation, I think. I grew up idolizing Lady Diana. I even had the Franklin Mint bride doll. I bet my mom still has that packed away somewhere.

How cute are those little bridesmaids??? Omygoodnesss. And funny, no mention at all of Kate’s dress at all. How ironic. She looks lovely, of course, but she wasn’t even mentioned by the commentators on BBC.

Oooooooh, Meghan is arriving now.

Her dress is utter perfection. I absolutely love the simplicity. Nicely done.

What must she be thinking as she walks that long aisle?? I’d be a blubbering mess. I certainly was at my own wedding. My dad had to give me his handkerchief.

And how about the little boy behind her carrying her veil… that toothless grin.

The look on Harry’s face when he first saw her was the best, and I love how they had time to talk before the ceremony started. I would have loved that. I remember feeling like we just jumped right in, and I had no time to even think about what was really happening.

Conversely, Meghan looks incredibly calm and composed. I don’t know how she does it.

Now the Episcopalian bishop is speaking, so I’m going to get on with this post. I had it mostly prepped ahead of time, thankfully, because I got totally sidetracked this morning watching the royal wedding.

I actually have a nice variety of outfits to share with you this week! We had some nice days and some not-so-nice days so I’ve got a mix of spring and summer looks going on here.

This first outfit is what I wore to church last week. The weather was kind of icky (nothing new there) but it was Mother’s Day so I decided to dress up a bit. This skirt is from Stitch Fix, and it’s a really convenient pull-on style. There is some red trim on the pockets, so I carried a red bag.

The sweater is from Ann Taylor, and it’s a nice piece for wearing with skirts or pants this spring and summer. If you need work wear, this is a great pick. It’s lightweight and layers beautifully under blazers and jackets, but you can also wear it as a stand alone top. I really like the white trimmed scallop neckline — details like that make all the difference. I’m wearing the black, but it also comes in pink and blue. For size reference, this is a small.

I wore this out to dinner on Saturday night with my family. We decided to celebrate with an early Mother’s Day dinner since we had to leave the house for our inspection anyway.

This Lucky Brand top is really pretty, and it’s just been marked down to $29! I paired it with cropped jeans and nude wedge sandals. You can see how I wore it with white jeans in THIS POST.

For some reason, the link is forwarding to the Lucky Brand home page, so just search “floral wrap top” and you’ll see it.

Monday was cloudy and cool, or at least it started out that way. I switched into shorts before dinner. For most of the day, I wore this collection of oldies but goodies — my all-time favorite cardigan, my all-time favorite jeans (on sale!), my new favorite fashion sneakers, and my new favorite white tee. LOL!

Seriously, though, if you don’t have this cardigan yet, treat yourself today. Unfortunately it is excluded from the promotion at Splendid, but it’s one of the few pieces I have that I think is worth paying full price for. You can see by how it fits me how flattering it is, and it’s so comfortable and easy to throw on and go.

It’s a thermal cotton material, so not a sweater and not a sweatshirt. It’s the perfect in-between. This is the Swan color, and I have it in black as well. For size reference, I wear the medium, so you probably want to size up if you’re in between sizes — especially if you want to be able to throw it in the dryer, which I do.

This top came in the mail earlier this week, and I threw it on to wear for my Facebook Live. It was hot that day, and I didn’t have the A/C on, so shorts were a necessity, but it’s a little long for them. I’ll probably wear it more with white jeans and wedge sandals for church or with cropped bluejeans and flat sandals for casual days.

If you like the Millers but not the price tag, these Sam Edelman sandals are a pretty good substitute, and they come in a nude patent.

Because some days you really don’t want to see my face and hair…

The verdict on these shorts is mixed. I wore them for about an hour and they remained a little too snug for my comfort level, so I definitely need to size up. However, I’m afraid if I size up, they’ll be too wide in the thighs… and so it goes. #notbuiltforshorts

If this shirt looks familiar, it’s because I styled it twice during my spring style series — once with black jeans and then with white. It’s also very similar to the pink top above. I was excited to see a short sleeved version for summer. Both tops come in a ton of colors, and they run true to size. For reference, I have a small in both.

Also, these leopard flats are on sale! I love them; they’re such a classy way to pop a basic outfit.

Finally, I wore this yesterday. I just had some errands to run, and then we had friends over for pizza in the evening, so I wanted to be comfortable but look put together.

This tie hem sweater is a nice piece from Loft — very soft and easy to wear. I feel like it looks and feels more expensive than it is, and I really like the color. It says it’s sheer in the description, but I don’t find that to be true at all — at least not with the pink one. I can’t speak for the grey.

And that’s a wrap for this week!

I have to say, I’m quite entertained by the reactions of the audience to this sermon — that is still going on, I might add. I’m thinking this is probably not the style of preaching typically heard in St. George’s Chapel.

I guess I’ll go ahead and close this post as the gospel choir sings Stand By Me. I plan to continue watching the wedding coverage until I have to get ready for my photo shoot.

Alison is coming out, and we’re shooting for an Olay post I have coming up. I’m excited to share the newest SPF moisturizer I’ve been testing out. If you’re an Olay fan, you’re going to love this one!

Okay, that’s it for me this morning. Over and out! Have a good day, and stay dry!

  1. I have been up since 5 am watching the coverage lol. It is going to make for a long day. It was a beautiful ceremony. The dress is a little plain for my tastes, she could have used a necklace to jazz it up a bit. I think her acting skills had to come into play to remain so calm? I wouldn’t have been able to keep myself together lol! The little girls were so precious in their dresses.

I’m glad they had a Saturday wedding so I could watch it live lol. I did see some of Will & Kate’s wedding while getting ready for work.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    1. It was very plain, but I like the simplicity of it and the cut. I did think it didn’t fit her as well as one would expect, though. I wonder if she lost weight after having it fitted.

  2. It was really fun to read your thoughts on the royal wedding… no one in my household wants to discuss it with me at all. I also idolized Princess Di…. even had my hair cut just like hers 😄
Awesome outfit post as well BTW
    Have a fabulous weekend.

  3. I liked your play by play of the royal wedding since I didn’t watch it nor did we tape it.  I like you doing a recap of what you wore during the week!  I plan on doing some online shopping at ON and Kohl’s.  We are having on and off rain this morning, with it being very heavy at times, so you would not be doing any outside photo shoots here.  Is Paul back to normal now?  I sure hope that he is and that he’s eating what he should to keep things under control.  Have a fabulous Saturday!

    1. Thanks for asking, Ginger. He’s on the mend, but not feeling his normal self yet. He’s still on a restricted diet and kind of wondering how to transition to more fiber. I think he needs to go in for another followup, so we’ll see. I think he’s on his way to feeling like himself again. We were told it would take time.

      1. I agree that a follow-up appointment would be helpful. He might can start taking Benefiber or something similar to help increase his fiber consumption without tearing his stomach up. Please let him know that he’s in my thoughts & prayers.

  4. I love the side tie top. I was never a fan of the ones that hung in front calling attention to “you know”. Great post as usual. Jolynne are you familiar with medere Burn? Suppose to speed up metabolism but healthy. I recorded wedding. That way I can fast forward through boring parts.

  5. Great outfits!  I love that splendid cardigan in black and am so tempted to get the cream color. Love your commentary on the wedding. I remember being so enameled with Princess Diana. It’s so fun to watch the princes grow up and their lives. I wish I could be a fly on the wall and see a glimpse of their real life – so different than ours.

    1. I just looked and found the Splendid cardigan on Amazon for a range of $78.40 – 98.00. Depends on sizing and colors. For my size the black and swan were the lower price, gray was higher. Check it out!

  6. I enjoyed your play by play of the wedding because I’m sitting here watching it as I’m reading your post. (I recorded it, of course. No way I was getting up at 2:00 to watch it!). My sentiments have coincided with yours exactly! Beautiful wedding, gorgeous dress, ginormous hats, American sermon and sweet moments.

    Have a great weekend!

  7. Observing so many of the Royal Wedding lady guests decked out, do you think they wearing pantyhose?

    1. Funny you ask that because I just heard commentators mentioning that it is customary and proper for the women to wear hose with their dresses. Bare legs are frowned upon in formal occasions.

  8. I just finished watching the wedding coverage and I cried throughout! I love a good fairy tale! 🙂 I wasn’t in love with Meghan’s dress though; it seemed too big and heavy on her. But she is gorgeous. I loved all the women’s dresses…..watching the guests arrive was one of my favorite parts.
I’m curious about your LOFT pink sweater. I bought it too and noticed while wearing it that it was really much thinner than I thought it was at first (air blew through it and I think my bra was visible- I didn’t wear a cami underneath) and also the pink is kind of marbled with white thread that also was pulling in several areas across the chest. I think I might have just got a bad one maybe. I’m going to return it and maybe exchange. Yours seems so much better quality than mine, but it’s hard to tell in the photo. Is yours a true pink? And are the arms really tight? Do you wear a cami under it?

    1. I also thought it was a tad ill-fitting, and I wonder if she lost weight after it was adjusted last.

Odd about the pink sweater. I haven’t noticed it being see-through at all, and I found it comfortable in the arms.

      1. K- I’ve sadly put it back in the packaging to return but will look in the store for a replacement as it might just be a fluke. The style of it is so cute. Maybe I should try the small rather than the xs. I bought the gray one for my sister-in-law for a Mother’s Day gift and she loves it.

  9. Okay so I haven’t even looked through your outfits yet, but I had to comment on your play by play of the wedding.  I am CRACKING UP!!  🤣 So funny!  And I’m really glad you did it because I’d totally forgotten about watching!  Enjoy your weekend.  Now I’ll go back and look at your outfits.

  10. Loved your play by play of the wedding… was thinking the same thing about those large hats. That would drive me a little crazy if I had to sit behind one of those. Loved the simplicity of the dress, she is so beautiful but the dress did seem illfitted in areas( can’t imagine the stress on her so I’m thinking she lost weight) When the choir sang “stand by me” it brought tears, what a beautiful rendition!

  11. Oh my goodness. I read through your post and had to laugh. Every single thing you commented on and I mean every single thing was just what I was thinking while watching. So funny. I would have been so annoyed if I had to try to see the wedding over some of those hats. I didn’t get up to watch it I DVR but only got to the vows and had to leave for my daughter in law to be bridal shower. So I will continue it soon. I liked the simplicity of her dress but wasn’t expecting that simple. She looked so fresh and natural but I guess I expected her to wear more make up like her looks on the red carpet. Anyways. Fun!!!  Great post on your outfits.

  12. Hello!  I have a question about your Citizens Rocket Crop Jeans.  We seem to wear the same size in most jeans and I was wondering on the fit of these. I have read where it suggests to size up. Did you find that to be the case?  What size are you wearing in these? Thanks and have a wonderful day!

    1. Yes! I am wearing them now. I sized up to 30, and I am glad I did. (I ordered 29 and 30 and tried both.) They do stretch out some with wear, but they still look good and are comfortable. I wouldn’t be able to wear them any smaller.

  13. I was right there with you on the Royal Wedding, Jo-Lynne. I just cannot get enough of the royals! I read this morning that Duchess Kate had already worn that particular dress three or four other times. I guess the BBC commentators don’t like the fact that Kate shops her closet. ITA about Meghan’s wedding dress(es) being very simple but beautiful. And her makeup was impeccable. I would love to know how to apply makeup so flawlessly that it appears that you aren’t wearing any. A great day in London!

  14. I also got a kick out of your play by play of the wedding. I was thinking of Princess Di and how sad it was she died so young and her boys had to grow up without their mom. I went to a wedding on Saturday and sat in pews facing the middle aisle just like the royal wedding. I had never seen that before. Love your blog as usual. Looking forward to seeing your new home.
