What I Wore + Try On Haul

Good morning! I hope you all are having a good weekend. Today I’ve got more try ons and pictures of what I wore over the last week or so.

I’d love to hear from you all too, as to what types of gift guides you’d like to see from me, and what you’ll be shopping for over Thanksgiving weekend. The sales are already starting — they seem to start earlier and earlier every year. I’ll be traveling, so I won’t be able to provide quite the amount of Black Friday sale coverage that I usually do, but I’m doing my best to prep some things ahead, and I know you all will agree that the most important thing is spending quality time with family.

Meanwhile, here’s what I’ve worn lately and my most recent try ons.

What I Wore

I wore this outfit to my son’s college football game a couple of weeks ago, with a black quilted vest on top, and I’ve worn this outfit as-is quite a few times when I’m at home or running errands around town. So comfy and cozy. And I’m super excited to tell you that this hooded sweater has been restocked! It’s marked down and then an additional 40% off.

I wore this outfit last Saturday to run errands and prepare for a dinner party I was hosting. (I swapped my booties for slippers when I got home.) This sweater finally went on sale, and it’s 40% off! I recommend sizing up one — I’m in the small, and it’s a little snug. I actually tugged on it to stretch it out some through the chest and midsection.  It’s nice quality, though, and I like the subtle play on the varsity stripe trend that’s popular right now. The grey heather combo works great with my black jeans, but I also really like the blue classics combo.

This is what I wore to church on Sunday. It was a bright, sunny day, so I used the opportunity to wear my suede mules. Also, this taupe suede moto jacket is back in stock AND on sale! Such a good color. Definitely size up one if in between; I have the medium.

I don’t think I got dressed on Monday — I can’t even remember. I definitely didn’t post an outfit to Instagram. I wore this on Tuesday for my Facebook Live chat and to do work at home.

And I wore this cozy outfit on Wednesday afternoon after my photo shoot with Alison. I’ll have more of this outfit on the blog later this week, and I’m excited to tell you these loafers have been restocked in the grey! These are absolutely the most comfortable shoes I own. SO worth the price — which is actually marked way down from the original so not so bad.

I actually wore this outfit two days this week, ha! This is my go-to when I’m at home — comfy AG skinnies, my Vince loafers, and a cashmere pullover sweater (v-neck or turtleneck, depending on how cold I am.) A lot of days I don’t post my actual outfit to IG b/c it’s too repetitive, but that’s real life, I guess!

This sweater is old, but I’m super stoked to tell you that these jeans from the #NSale this summer were recently restocked and still on sale. They’re one of my favorite AG pairs ever — I’m seriously tempted to buy a backup pair. For reference, I wear a size 29 in these — for some reason they run smaller than most of my other AG legging ankle jeans.

I also wore this outfit one day this week, I can’t remember which one. This turtleneck is one of my all-time favorites, and it’s selling fast. I also really like these sateen leggings as an alternative to jeans.

Also, if you’re a LOFT card holder, you can get 50% off your order today! If you’re not, you can get 40% off tops, sweaters, leggings, and dresses. Be sure to check out my LOFT Favorites page in The Shop!

And finally, I wore this outfit again last night when we went out with friends, but I forgot to get a picture before it got dark out. I swapped out the pumps for my black suede sock booties and carried a crossbody bag instead of this tote.

P.S. This leopard teddie sweater is now under $30!

Try On Haul

As for my latest try-ons… I only have a few things, but I know I tend to go heavy on the sweaters, so I’m excited to have some jeans and dresses to share with you.

I’m always on the lookout for a good sweater dress this time of year, and I struck out with the first few I tried. I ordered this sweater dress from Banana Republic when I saw it on another blog, and it looks ADORABLE on Shana, but on me, I feel like it looks like a bit of a sack.

I think it’s supposed to fit that way, but I’m not sure it’s best for my curvy figure. What do you all say? I love the color and the button detail, and it’s a great length. So often, sweater dresses are way short.

I also ordered this ruffle cuff sweater dress. It’s a dressier style, and I love that it’s a little more fitted than the one above, but I’m not crazy about the crewneck. I wish it were more open, but maybe a long layered necklace will help compensate for that. This one is also shorter, so I like it best with taller boots. I took pictures of it both ways, to show the difference.

FYI, Banana Republic is running 40% off PLUS an extra 10% off today. Let me know if y’all would like me to add a BR Picks page to The Shop.

Okay, next up, denim.

I’m still trying to find straight leg jeans that I like. I have a few more coming, but I’ll show you what I’ve got so far. I ordered two pairs of Lucky Brand Sweet N Straight jeans from Amazon. I thought I ordered the same two pairs in different washes, but one is definitely longer than the other.

These are the Tanzanite wash, and they’re a size 29W x 30L. I actually think they’re slightly too big for me, which is odd because I always wear size 29 in Lucky Brand legging jeans, but I think I need a 28 in these. I feel like the length is awkward with flats, but then I tried it on with boots, and I like them MUCH better.

These are the same jeans in the Twilight Blue, which is a darker wash. I like this wash better, but I prefer the length of the ones above. I ordered the same 29W x 30L size, but when I held them up to one another, I confirmed that these are about an inch longer. They also feel smaller. I don’t like how they break on the top of the boot, but I prefer the fit through the hips and thighs.

And finally, some better shots of the Paige Verdugo crop jeans I’m wearing with the pink cardigan above. First of all, these are sooo soft right out of the box. They have that worn-in look and feel of jeans that you’ve had for years, and I love the lighter wash.

With a 26″ inseam, they’re considered cropped, although if you’re petite, they’d be more of an ankle jean. They’re nice for wearing with flats or booties, but I think I’d like them even better in the summer with sandals. They’re a great price for Paige jeans, so definitely worth holding onto, even if I don’t wear them a ton until next spring.

And that’s a wrap!

I’m shooting a few more looks with Alison on Tuesday, and Cyndi and I will be wrapping up 20 Days of Winter Fashion after breaking for the Thanksgiving weekend.

I can’t believe it’s almost December! This year has FLOWN for our family — so many changes, but all of it good. I can’t wait to celebrate Christmas in our new home.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  1. Well I ordered the Caslon sweater. I really like that brand. It works for my body type. I really like the second sweater dress on you. I think the first one is lacking some shape maybe? I think it would look cute with a belt or something. Just my two cents. ☺️

  2. I like the gray sweater dress but it definitely needs a belt to give your west some definition. The burgundy one is pretty too and I like the ruffle sleeve detail. It looks great with your tall boots.

  3. First, I love those straight leg jeans on you. They fit perfectly and balance out your body. You look slimmer and taller in these jeans. Now, you can rock those pointy toe boots all winter long! 😀
The first grey dress is not for you. Sorry, but it makes you look broad. The second one is fantastic!  Like it paired with the OTK boots best. I don’t need to tell you that a long necklace with give you that V that you like. That color lights up your face were the grey washes you out.

  4. Really nice looks. Love the purple dress and I think the straight leg jeans look great on you!

As for gift guides, I’d love ideas for teens (both boy and girl – boy 16, girl 12 years old). And husbands that always say they don’t need anything!! Thought about a good pair of quality sunglasses that aren’t horrible expensive? Thank you for all the work you do to help us!

    1. Ellie, my husband does the same. Getting ideas out of him is frustrating. I found buying things that he wouldn’t splurge on were a winner – a quality leather belt or wallet, a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses ( he loves), a bottle of single malt scotch. If he likes fishing, golfing or whatever is his hobby or sport, they all offer possibilities for a good gift. Hope this helps, ~ Joanna

  5. Hi! I would like to see a gift guide for teen girls my daughter is 15 and you gave me some good ideas last year! Thanks!!

  6. I really like both sweater dresses on you. I think the loser fit one would be cute with your black Moto jacket to give it some structure and maybe a pair of black tights?… love the try ones as usual but forget the straight cut jeans and stick with the skinnies. I think they are just too much work for what’s it worth. Skinnies go on with a comfy sweater and your done. I think they’re more flattering too:) have a great week with your son. I’d like to see what you might wear at home for a  casual Christmas Eve or to Church and a casual Christmas Day dinner outfit when hosting…

  7. I think you’ve conquered the straight leg jean conundrum! I think all those pairs look fantastic on you! (Except the ones that are a tad too long, but the color wash and fit are good). I wear mine with flats and loafers, so that’s my favorite look, but yours look good with the brown boots too! I’m seeing more and more women out and about in straight legs and fashion sneakers now too (at least here in CA). 😊

  8. Love the Paige jeans! Do they run the same size as your AG skinnies? I also size up for my AG skinnies (size 28), but wasn’t sure what size to order for the Paige. It’s a brand I’ve never worn (yet!).

  9. I like the burgandy sweater dress with the OTK boots better than the grey sweater dress.  I think because the grey one needs some structure.  Maybe black leather jacket and tights?  I emailed you my gift ideas I’d like to see.  Have a great week next week and enjoy your Thanksgiving with family.   Enjoyed your LIVE just now.  I’m a little late tuning in. 🙂 LOL

  10. You have done a wonderful wrap up!
I prefer the burgundy dress …but I like the cute detail on the
Gray and think it would look good with a jacket.
Wishing you a wonderful visit with your family.

  11. I would like to see anything trending now for Christmas gifts anything electronic, PJs, Robe, house hold items, popular foods, candles, and at different price points please. Things that are new out that we may not be aware of. I have many people to buy for and sometimes I buy several of the same thing to simplify my shopping. Thanks for everything you do !

  12. I actually really like both sweater dresses. The burgundy is just gorgeous, and the way you featured it on IG was just perfect. If you only keep one, that’s the one!
And those Paige jeans…I ordered them after your fall sale post and I absolutely love them. The fit for me is probably one of the best I’ve come across. I also ordered the AG ones you shared, but in green, and those should arrive today. I was so excited about them until I realized they have a 30″ inseam. I just saw they were legging ankle style and assumed it would be 28″. I didn’t notice the inseam until I’d already ordered. I’m not optimistic, but we will see!

    1. Oh, no. Which AG jeans are 30″? Yeah, that’s a little long, but if the price was good, maybe they can be hemmed. Glad you love the Paige. And I am definitely keeping the sweater dress. Wore it all day yesterday, and felt great! It really holds its shape and shows your curves without being clingy.

  13. Even though I’m late reading this post, I’m commenting.  First, a question, did you size down on the Vince loafers?  I love those shoes, and am considering taking the plunge, but I’d like to at least try to get the correct size.  I’ve found Vince shoes run big, but wanted to hear if that was true for these.  Do they stretch much?  Second, since you asked, I give a “meh” on the sweater dresses (both).  They’re not bad, but I think you look better in other things.  Maybe it helps to be a tall skinny toothpick to wear a sack?  I don’t know, but I’m 5’7″ and thin, and don’t feel like I can get away with that look.  Maybe it helps to be 30 (for a lot of things, lol)?  I also give a “meh” to the straight leg jeans (fwiw, I always find Lucky jeans run large, and they stretch while you wear them, so end up even larger – I like them, but need to resist the temptation to buy anything larger than a 27).  I agree they look much better with the boots though.  I love those paige jeans on you though.  Love.  I have a similar pair (or maybe the same?) – in a lower rise than is ideal, but I still love the way they look and fit.  I especially loved your “comfy” outfit with the grandpa cardigan.  Good stuff!

  14. I liked both pair of Lucky’s. I thought the lighter ones looked nice with the loafers. You’ve gotten too used to the skinny look. With straight it’s a nice balanced look.
I like them with the boots too of course. I don’t mind the break (but I’m a bootcut girl so feel free to ignore me!)
I like the burgundy dress better, and the sleeves are cute, but I don’t love either one. I’d say the search is still on. Maybe a wrap style sweater dress?

  15. I love the first pair of Lucky Brand straight leg jeans on you. The second pair is a little too long. Were they a winner for you or not the right ones yet?
