Mom Style: What I Wore This Week 06.01.11

This week I was really dedicated to getting out of my sweatpants rut. I’m not sure my summer uniform of tanks and jean shorts is that much of an improvement, although I have been putting some thought into my accessories. Nevertheless, I feel better and find that I’m more positive and more productive when I take some effort with my appearance. So thanks, Lindsay, for inspiring those of us who work at home to put some thought and effort into our appearance.

WEDNESDAY: This is my standard summer uniform — tank tops and skirts or denim shorts.

When the temperatures hit 85, the only question to ask myself is, Which tank top shall I wear today? This particular tank is from Banana Republic. I like the knotted detail on the straps. And I love, love, love this loden green cargo skirt. It’s a size too big (they didn’t have my size so I bought a size up) and it has a torn pocket and a grease stain on the front, but I refuse to part with it till I can find a suitable replacement. I picked it up at Target a couple years ago and I have definitely gotten my money’s worth.

The rubber flips are just casual and comfy. I threw on my favorite Silpada necklace and earrings and a gold cuff bracelet, which I promptly removed when I started working at the computer. The coral bag lends a pop of color and pulls from the coral in the necklace. Funny thing, that bag. I was about to ebay it last year because I hardly carried it, but this spring it seems to go with almost everything.

THURSDAY: I basically hung out at home, baked, and took my daughter to the park. Such is the glamorous life I lead.

These are my favorite jean shorts — the Joe’s Jeans Crinkle Cuff Bermuda. They have basically replaced a similar pair that I wore to death last summer. I like the fit of these better, though, so YAY! I bought them off of 6pm.com back when summer was only but a dream. Now that it’s finally warming up, I’m getting my money’s worth out of them. I love the flap pocket on the back. The tank is another Banana Republic find — several years ago. I wish they’d bring it back because I love it. It’s slightly ribbed, and I feel like the neckline is more flattering than the typical v-neck. The flips are from Target last summer. I like the molded cork sole — very comfy and it adds some interest. Simple jewelry from Studio Jewel and JanMary jazz it up a little bit.

Thursday night I went out to dinner with some ladies from church so I decided to forego my daily uniform and put on something just a little bit nicer… my new CAbi Cottage Cardigan and Asymmetrical Tank with my old white cropped skinny jeans (Gap, last summer) and pewter sandals (Target). Please ignore my daughter’s sandals in the background; this is real life, after all. I don’t have it in the photos, but I carried my coral leather bag.

FRIDAY: I worked from home all day and left the house only to take my daughter to and from school so I just threw on a gray tank and, you guessed it, the same jean shorts. My brother always said, jeans never get truly dirty, they’re just different degrees of clean. Works for me!

SATURDAY: We took the family on a drive to a bird refuge and went on a short hike.

I traded out my new jean shorts for my old ones and put on yet another tank top. Variety is overrated, I’m just sayin’. Even though I was planning to be at one with nature for most of the day, I still took the time to put on jewelry and do my face because I’m high maintenance like that. Hey, it’s all part of my charm, or at least, that’s what I like to tell myself.

And no, I didn’t hike in those flip flops. I brought my red Keens along and changed when I got there. Shoes make my feet hot, so I don’t wear them any longer than absolutely necessary. I love Keens for hiking. They are lightweight and comfy, and the soles are nice and grippy. They’re also a lot cuter than those clunky hiking boots.

Okay, this is hilarious, I went to look up my Keen Shoes review post from last summer, and I was wearing this exact same outfit (except this time I had my shirt on frontwards). See, told ya this was my summer uniform!

SUNDAY: Now this is a new look for me. This is the CAbi’s Songwriter Tunic with my white skinnies and favorite wedge sandals.

I wasn’t sure about this look at first, but I really like how light and summery it is, and I was surprised at how much I like this shade of yellow on me.

And then I abruptly stopped taking pictures. Because I think you got enough of the tank tops and skirts/shorts, did you not? And that’s pretty much all I wore the rest of the week.

  1. There was a public (ok a singular?) outcry! 😀

I love the cargo skirt. I have a pair of shorts from the Gap in that same color – It’s kind of an odd shade to find clothes to go with if you are not into beige.

The last outfit with the new Cabi shirt is gorgeous. I don’t normally love yellow but I do love this shade on you!!!

  2. I was curious about that yellow tunic when you Tweeted it–it looks great on! Love that look.

I’ve been trying to decide if I’m willing to spend a chunk of change on some Torrid jean shorts that are like those. I refuse to wear shorts that aren’t knee length, but now that I stay at home I could really use some shorts. It’s just too dang hot to wear jeans all summer. You may have convinced me!

    1. How spendy are Torrid jean shorts? The Joe’s jeans that JL has on (I only know this cuz I asked a while ago and bought some) are on 6pm.com for like $60.

  3. That’s the CAbi top that I have and I love it, too! Wore it to an Easter Egg hunt with white jeans (also from CAbi) and some great silver wedge sandals. Also just got the CAbi Campagne Tunic with the silver-ish polka dots (for half-price at a sample sale!) and can’t wait to wear it to dinner Friday night.

  4. Not everyone can pull off that shade of yellow for sure. You do it beautifully. Love that light, breezy outfit. If I put that on, people would be asking me if I’m “feeling well” all day. 🙂 So, I have a question. As I waste time….or, rather…surf around for inspiration on different WIWW links, I see that SO many people…younger ones and wiser ones…get adorable shirts, dresses, skirts, etc. from “Forever 21.” Am I showing my age here by stating that the website completely overwhelms me and I can never find anything on it? Without their direct links, I’m just lost. Did I just seal my fate at Talbot’s and Land’s End forever? Should I just start my own line of Forever 35??? Please just tell me that I’m not the only one.

    1. LOL! You are not alone. I am not fashion expert but I don’t do much from Forever 21 either anymore mostly because- yeah, overwhelming.

You may really like The Gap and Banana Republic tho (in my opinion, online is by far more organized and not overwhelming – I didn’t shop at the store itself until I had the online selection under control). I am a Lands’ End lover too….

    2. DeAnn, I’ve looked in there for the same reasons you mention – so many ppl seem to find cute things. But nothing in there does anything for me. I bought a sweater there once and threw it away after one season b/c the quality was so crappy. I’m all for starting a Forever 25. 😉

    3. Thank you for the affirmation, ladies! I going to start the “Forever 35” site…extra large print…big icon that says, “Move the pointer thingie HERE and CLICK to find a lovely outfit that is fashionable and slimming ageless and well-made and affordable.” I don’t think I can go wrong with that one. 🙂

  5. That shade of yellow is awesome on you with your dark hair! It’s such a fun, summer color. I have the same issue with shoes – I try to stay in strappy ones as long as I can before I’m forced to put on the heavy duty ones.

  6. Love these outfits! I’m a young mom, 24, but I have a hard time finding clothes that are in my “age range”–I can find a ton of things for older ladies or teens, but I love how simple, fresh, and young, but not teenish these all look! I love to wear tanks, but haven’t lived where it’s warm for a while, so looks like I need to invest!
Thanks for the great pics and ideas.

  7. Love your new blog design! Fresh colors! (also that you have a shot of you with coffee. I love that!)

Anyway – I so wanted to get the CAbi songwriter tunic, but my hubby did not LOVE it. I did. Sooo, you look great in it! Love it with the white jeans!

    Have a great day!

    1. I was really unsure about it, personally. I’m still not sure it’s a favorite, but I do like that it’s something different. I love the colors, but the sleeves are kind of, um, billowy. LOL.

  8. I love your breezy summer wardrobe. You look put together and still cool and comfortable.

My favorite look is your new look. I love the crisp colors and the tunic is just great.

    1. LOL! Oh my dear, YES I am wearing one, that is for sure!! I don’t know – I’m sure they show at times IRL but in the photos I try to cover them with the tank top straps.

  9. Shoes make my feet hot, too! In fact, I have on socks and tennies now, because I have a few errands, but I need to work out after, and I’m not getting ready, so I need to LOOK like I’m about to work out, you know? Anyway, went on a dog walk after the bus and almost died. It’s very hot and humid here.

I think I need to look into some Keens for the summer. We plan to do some hiking on our vacation. Do I remember that you have a narrow foot? And they work for you? I wear a 9 or 9.5, and many shoes are too wide for my narrow foot.

    1. They do. That one style – the Whisper – runs narrower than most. At least it looks narrower, I can’t be sure if the footbed is actually narrower or not. But you can tighten them so I don’t think you’d have any problem. All 3 of my kids can wear them with various types of feet.

  10. I have that Songbird top! Almost wore it today in warm Boston but I cannot find my white tank! (It needs a cami….) What style do you have on under yours? My bra has wider straps so I think a thin strapped cami won’t be enough 🙁

    1. Which one is the songbird one? I have the asymmetrical tank on under the blue sweater, and if I keep the sweater on, my bra doesn’t show.

        1. Ah! I wore my own tank top under that – the Banana Republic one I wrote about last Friday (or the week before – the tanks and tees post). And I did have to move my tank and my bra straps to the sides so they didn’t show in the tunic.

  11. Thoroughly enjoyed this post – I think your summer outfits are cute and nicely accessorized 🙂 LOVE your new bermudas and the last outfit, way to step out of your norm!

  12. Love your outfits! I love that navy blue cardigan with the white pants and the flats, very cute!!

  13. Love that yellow tunic and it looks fabulous with white jeans. I have been loving tunics these days. Lilly has some really cute ones too.

  14. Love, love. love the first outfit. I want an exact copy! Also, the last outfit looks fantastic on you. I’m working on my summer wardrobe (had a baby in Dec. and working on the last of the baby weight!) and debating spending the money on jean shorts like yours. How do you find Joe’s run? Sizing always scares me when ordering online!

    1. I can answer for my particular size but I am not as tiny as Jo-Lynne, Joe’s runs a bit smaller than The Gap jeans (which tend to be run big IMO) but exactly the same size as Lucky’s brand Sweet & Low. I have also had some Lee brand (current style, not the mom jeans style) and I can wear a smaller size in Lees (by about a size and a half) than in Joe’s. They run the same as a Levi 550 low cut jean. Does that help?

      Basically 30s are size 10s.

    2. Yeah, I agree with Darla – 30 is about a 10. I wear 29 in Joe’s and I’m an 8 at the Gap. Those white skinny jeans are Gap size 8. Joe’s do stretch a lot, though, and I dry mine in the dryer. If I was diligent about air drying them, I might be able to get away with a 28. (I was a 28 5-lbs ago, lol.) I have a bit of a tummy, though (thanks to 3 pregnancies) so I need the 29 in the waist.

  15. Looking gorgeouse as always. Love the yellow on you – a colour I just can’t wear.

Do you kids pass comment on your clothes? My daughters (13 and 11) now take a KEEN interest in my clothes, especially if I am going to be in their vacinity in public! They definitely aren’t keen on my clothes with “vegetation” as they call it!

Always lovely to see you wearing THE janmary bracelet 🙂 ( Did you know I have an order for a bracelet and necklace to be worn by a guest attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace! I am VERY chuffed and excited!)

  16. I like the final outfit best! You look good in light, summery colors.

I find that it’s much harder to get dressed in the summer than in the other three seasons. I prefer jeans, sweaters, jackets, and cardigans. What about you?

    1. Oh no I love LOVE LOVE summer. I’d rather do just about ANYTHING in the summer! LOL. I do enjoy winter clothes, though, I must admit.
