Mom Style: What I Wore This Week 07.06.11

I’ve been doing some shopping. Not because I need a darn thing — cause I certainly don’t. But on the way to Asheville for Type A Con, I found myself killing time in the airport so I wandered into the Gap and made this spontaneous purchase — the Gap Knot-Front Tank.

I know, like I need another black tank in my life *huge eye roll* but I really like this one because of the detail around the neckline and because it fits looser than most of my other tanks. I wore this riding down to the Eastern Shore for our family vacation last Thursday.

Then when I was at the mall last week, I wandered into Banana Republic. BIG mistake. Or a big score, depending on how you look at it. They were running a promotion for 40% off sale merchandise, plus I had 3 rewards cards that added up to $40 burning a hole in my wallet, so I ended up with a skirt, pair of shorts, 2 tops and a sweater for about $120.

I wore the Isabelle Ruffle Cami and Lightweight Ruffle-Sleeve Cardigan out with Stephanie and Colleen on Wednesday night and then again to church on Sunday with my white bootcut jeans and wedge sandals.

Normally I look right past these strappy tops but I loved the pattern on this one so I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did. I got tons of compliments on it. I love how the floral pattern in the blouse has the look of tie-dye and the details like the raw edges on the ruffles. I got the sweater because I wasn’t sure if I could pull off the top without it, and I sure was glad for the extra warmth in church on Sunday!

This next outfit I’ve already worn several times this week as well. I wore it at the Hyatt over the weekend and then again on the Fourth of July. (I know, it is not red, white or blue, but I’m a bit of a scrooge when it comes to dressing for the holidays. I guess you could say I don’t like to be told what to do.)

I honestly thought my days of wearing shorter shorts were over, but I saw these Roll-Up Shorts on the mannequin at Banana Republic and I thought I’d give them a try. After seeing pictures of myself in those baggy bermuda shorts, I had already pretty much decided they needed to be replaced. I think these will do just the trick!

That’s about all I’ve got this week. For more What I Wore Wednesday posts, visit The Pleated Poppy!

  1. Love your wander in and shop tops! Really cute.

And what to wear with that white skirt – how about a cami and the coral sweater.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1. Yeah, I hoped they might, but it didn’t work. The cami is really quite long, and the pattern sort of conflicted with the eyelet design in the skirt. But I do like the coral and white color combo.

  2. Isn’t it even more satisfying when you discover some great clothes when you weren’t even looking for them?!

Must see if this looser gap tops have reached our side of the Atlantic.

Love your banana republic top and cardi too. Looking good!

    1. Oh it’s so nice to find cute things when you have nothing particular in mind. I hate shopping under pressure!

  3. Kicking myself for not getting over to Banana Republic sale. Love what you found, especially the skirt! I’d def. try the coral combo with it… or, if that ends up not working, even the tank from the Fourth?

  4. Love your new goodies – they look wonderful.

I think your new coral/white tank would look great with the white skirt. I love the crispness of coral and white together.

  5. Congrats on your finds – I think you look great in coral. I’ve been belting a lot of my tops over my skirts recently – it defines the waist with the longer tops.

    1. Yeah, I like that look in theory. It doesn’t work for me though – I’m too high waisted or something.

  6. Maybe it’s just the photos but I’d swear you look thinner than you already are!! You look SO great! And pardon me for saying so but I’m jealous of your rack… I can’t fill out my tank tops these days and I’m jealous.

    Love that black gap top!!

    1. You crack me up. If you only knew the lengths to which I have to go to keep those babies under control. LOL!!

  7. You look adorable~ I love the coral top with the sweater and I agree that it would go with your white skirt. I would think that most fitted tops would go, as well as a slightly flowing one? Have fun with your new clothes!

  8. You look fabulous as always. I love that Gap top. And your shorts are cute, so I’m glad you got them and you like them. I am trying not to buy anything this month, in anticipation of a little shopping in August before we go to L.A. for a little trip (sans kids!). Your posts will be revisited when I do finally get to shop.

  9. Love outfit #2! Those colors look great on you!

I went through a black top period, and now I seem to be going through a pumpkin colored top period. I’m working really hard to stay away from those colors and go with brighter ones. I think, I hope, the brighter colors make me look more my age, maybe even younger. I can hope…

  10. I haven’t tucked anything in since the 6th grade!!! Not a tucker-inner! Belts also look good in theory but I think a combination of my thicker waist and shorter torso just makes me look dumpy. Letting the tall, thin ones have yet another current trend…sigh… I don’t know what kind of top, but a black or navy top would look super cute with that adorable skirt! I bought a pair of denim shorts like in the first picture from Zappos on sale and I have yet to wear them. They look super cute on everyone, but that nagging voice keeps ringing in my ears, “If you’ve worn the trend once, you probably shouldn’t wear it again.” (Thinking about the pair of Guess shorts I had like that in high school/college.) Hmm…

  11. Super cute stuff, especially that white pencil skirt. I actually have similar body proportions to you, and I will agree that tucked-in shirts are not very flattering. One way I have gotten around the what-shirt-with-pencil-skirt conundrum is to actually tuck in a cami or shell but wear an open cardigan on top. It helps with the proportion issue, keeps everything smooth, and visually creates a thin column of space down your upper torso, which is really flattering. Sometimes (if I’m feeling skinny!) I will belt the open cardigan around the waist, depending on the fit of the cardi.

    Love your blog. 🙂
