Mom Style: What I Wore This Week 08.31.11

It’s b-a-a-a-a-ck! Sorta.

Lindsay’s goal in hosting the What I Wore Wednesday blog carnival is to keep each other accountable to get out of our yoga pants and put a little bit of effort into ourselves. If that is the goal, then I succeeded more often than not. If the goal is to inject a bit of style into the everyday, well then, I am in a rut. Big Time Rut.

This is the only photo I took this week. This is the kids’ First Day of School.

Ruffle sleeveless top :: Banana Republic

Skinnies :: Paige (bought at Bloomies, I think)

Pewter Sandals :: Target

Dangle Earrings :: Lucky Brand, I *think* (Macy’s)

Sunnies :: Tori Burch (Sunglass Hut – gift card was birthday gift from Hub)

I admit I wore yoga pants most of the weekend, what with all the hurricane drama and tornado warnings and sleeping all night on the floor of the basement with my cell phone and flashlight at arm’s reach. It took me a few days to recover, because I didn’t sleep a wink. Did I also mention that I was alone? Yeah, Paul was out of town. Fun times. But now that the summer’s coming to a swift and abrupt end and the kids are back in school, I’m determined to put more effort into getting dressed every day. I really do think I’m more productive that way, and the neighbors will thank me. To say nothing of my husband — who has always had a strong aversion to “stretch pants”. It is probably the only fashion opinion he holds, so it might be nice if I tried to avoid them as much as possible.

My only problem is, suddenly everything in my closet looks the same. I actually got rid of a ton of stuff a few weeks ago. My drawers and closet were overflowing and I felt like I was always wearing the same 3 outfits so I did a major overhaul and took a ginormous trash bag to the thrift store. That sure felt good, but now when I look in my drawers, I just see stacks of tank tops and the same two pairs of shorts that I’ve been alternating all summer. I am so not good at layering cute looks during the summer. It’s too hot and it feels too fussy. And even my accessories are starting to seem ho-hum.

I think I’m actually ready for fall!!

Did I really just say that? Surely not.

Maybe I just need to go shopping. Ha!

So this week I’m making a commitment. I will figure out some way to get some variety into my wardrobe. And yoga pants are only for workout days. We’ll see how I do.

  1. This is a huge issue for me now that I am not working. I have moved into a pair of linen cargo shorts!! I did make an effort yesterday when I took Drew to school but today it’s right back to those shorts. They are the summer version of yoga pants.

    Love those sandals!

  2. I’ve always thought you look very pulled together! I love your Wednesday posts because I never have a clue what is in style and I’ve learned so much by following your advice. I have no idea what stylish people are wearing or what trends are popular, that bit of info never seems to penetrate this deep into suburbia!
Btw, I would have given a pretty penny for that ginormous bag. Seriously! Your castoff style is still a huge step up from what I have to work with.
Thank you for continuing with these posts.

  3. Ugh I’m going through a frumpy cycle right now myself. It’s been so hot here and I’ve kind of given up being all cutsie unless I am going somewhere. Working from home has its perks and then it has its frumps.

Whyyyyyy whyyyyyy are our men always gone (mine has to work during every single tornado, etc) when there is a storm. I have always been alone and in the basement. It’s so much easier now now that I have a teen, but jeez loueez….. long nights for sure. I shouldn’t complain – our basement is literally another house fully equipped with bedrooms and bathrooms and kitchenette and living room ….. but of course I refuse let my son or animals leave my side, cuz I’m a freak like that.

  4. I’m so looking forward to fall, too. Fall = boots. Enough said.

Now if only my 18-month-old would grow out of the “let’s grab Mommy’s necklace as hard as I can and PULL” stage, I could step up my accessorizing without fear of losing them!

  5. I was actually planning on posting for WIWW, but I am wearing shorts and a t-shirt and flip flops. And, that’s pretty much what I wore all summer!

I’m really looking forward to fall this year, too. Now that the kids are older it’s a really fun season. Plus, I can bust out some cute stuff (hello, boots!).

For the record, you have a classic, understated, and clean style. Love it! Even though you might feel like you’re in a rut, you still look very put together. So, yay, you!

  6. Love your accessorries and sandals.

This is only my third week linking up at WIWW.

I currently have a fun anything goes linky at my blog that runs Friday through Monday each week. I just announced a new monthly “desperate 4 date night” linky and would love for you to join in on the fun. Here is the link explaing more.

Thanks for you time and hope to see you soon.

  7. I don’t care what anyone says, I love yoga pants. I wear them all the time (even to work sometimes! I am a preschool teacher) and I just think they are wonderful. I don’t like the rough fabric of denim and I have a bad case if IBS and lactose intolerance to it really makes my tummy troubles manageable when I don’t have to stuff my belly into jeans!
I do really like your style. It’s chic without being too trendy or teenager-y. Something I seem to struggle to find a nice “mom” style without being too “momish”- if you know what I mean.

    1. I feel your pain with the IBS and LI. I have the same and sometimes a binding waistband is the WORST. I think a lot of ppl look really cute in yoga pants with a cute sweater or top but for some reason, I feel pretty schlumpy when I wear them all day (not that it stops me…) 😉

  8. I was just thinking about how I need to weed out things again. I’m pretty good about getting rid of stuff every 3-6 months, but I know there are some things I have held on to that need to go. And apparently I am ready for fall because recent purchases include a cardigan, jeans and gray flats. I’ve never worn flats but I finally found some I like (I think). I’ve really started looking for details on my tops, because I tend to get solid tees/sweaters. I still can’t resist a white shirt, but a sheer one with ruffles is more interesting than a plain v-neck. I look forward to seeing what you find for yourself this fall.

  9. Yes, me too…rut. Weight loss plateau/rut as well…tired of same clothes. Ready for jeans, boots and sweater weather. By the way, I ordered a few of your suggestions for the reunion weekend…waiting for them to arrive! Also ordered a sale dress from Boden and Garnet Hill. Too bad I don’t have a blog to put up pics so folks could help me choose what to wear. 🙂

  10. I think you look adorable! For more ideas on clothes for moms- and I’m talking realistic clothing (affordable, comfortable, age appropriate) check out my blog: https://everydaymomstyle.wordpress.com

As for all you moms out there with IBS, I also suffer from it, which is one reason why I love skirts and dresses so much- no binding waistband!
