Mom Style: What I Wore This Week 04.20.11

It’s that time again! I am trying to get out of my comfort zone and experiment with some new styles, although I have to say, now I know why I stick with what I know works. I’m tempted to leave out the outfits that I don’t like, but then again, perhaps it’s better to show the bad with the good.

WEDNESDAY:

Black open hooded cardigan from Nordstrom (last fall) and Gap Shirred Back T with Joe’s Chelsea Crop in Chloe from 6pm.com. Black flats are from Nine West (last spring) and the Stella & Dot earrings and necklace that I got at Julie’s party a few weeks back. I wore this outfit to Target and to preschool drop off/pick up. In the rain. Yeah, I know. I just couldn’t bear to wear boots in April.

I don’t think the top is particularly flattering, this is definitely a case of “it looks better on the model.” (I ordered it online.) On the other hand, it’s nice for those days when you’re not feeling like wearing body conscious clothing. You have those days too, right? I do like the color.

I’m still not sold on the gray cropped jeans, but I do think gray is a nice contrast with the teal and the black. I think I’d prefer a darker gray, though. Or even white.

While I love the Stella & Dot jewelry, I felt a little blingy for Target.

THURSDAY:

I wore this to my lunch with Robyn O’Brien. I purchased this top and sweater at Madewell for BlogHer last summer and I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of it. I put it with my very favorite jeans (Joe’s bootcut with flap pockets) — speaking of getting a lot of mileage out of an article of clothing! I think these were my first pair of designer jeans. I got them to review for my first Holiday Gift Guide back in 2008, and I absolutely love them. I wear them every chance I get.

In celebration of our spring-like weather, I dug out these tobacco colored wedge sandals (Stuart Weitzmans that I bought for a song at 6pm.com at the end of last summer). I found this coral leather handbag in the back of my closet and dusted it off. It gives the otherwise bland outfit a pop of color.

FRIDAY:

Despite the unseasonable chill in the air on Friday, there was brilliant sunshine, and it put me in the mood to wear flip flops and shorts even if it meant freezing my tuckus off as I ran the kids hither and yon. The shorts are another score from 6pm.com, the flips are Reefs I picked up in Rehoboth last month, the sweater is Banana Republic from last year, and the top is woven shoulder tank from the Gap — I liked it so much I got it in silver and peacock.

The sweater probably isn’t the most flattering, although I wear it a lot. I showed a picture of the back because it is that popular longer length and hits right at the, ahem, widest part of me. I realize I look better in shorter sweaters, but I love the color of this and it offers some warmth while still looking springy so I’ve been wearing it a lot lately.

Saturday it was rainy and cold and I was quite uninspired. I threw on the same pink sweater with a clean white tee and jeans. No need to take a picture of that.

SUNDAY:

That’s my CAbi dress that I picked up at Scoop back in the winter. It’s a lot of pattern, so I always wear it with this denim jacket I got from the LOFT many moons ago. I just like how denim gives an edge to any outfit, and this jacket goes well with skirts and dresses because the dark wash and the 3/4-length sleeves make it dressier than most.

The bag pulls the coral from the dress. Instead of boots and tights, this time I wore these gray patent leather slingback heels since it’s supposedly springtime.

And that’s all she wrote. Literally. Ha!

  1. Love these posts. They are so inspiring. I work at home and have been living in sweats 24/7 – except for church on Sundays. I have copied a few of your outfits they looked so great!

  2. I love your super cute CAbi dress. And Thursday is my fave! But, truly, you look great in all these outfits. No misses girl!

Love your WIWW posts! They always make me smile!

  3. Love the wedges and coral purse. I wear flip flops and shorts/capris whenever I can! Great cabi dress, the pattern is fab!

  4. Love the Coral Bag. That was the perfect touch for that outfit! I also love wearing sandals with jeans. “You have those days too, right?” Umm…yeah for about 6 years now. 🙂 Everything looks great! Thanks for the fun post!

  5. I think they all look great! One thing that I do with blousier tops, like the one you have from Gap, is throw a skinny belt around my natural waist. It keeps the top loose, but also shows gives it a more tailored/feminine look. Just a thought 🙂

    1. Thanks. Yeah, I’ve tried belts but I can never seem to get them to work. Others look so cute in them.

  6. I LOVE that Madewell top! I like the blue one as well but I see what you mean – one or two of those will do ya.

I LOVE to see shorts on SOMEone, ANYone. Because? it has snowed every day this week so far….

Also too? {be jealous alert!} I’m heading to the Mall of America this weekend.

  7. Gorgeous!

I think what I love most about WIWW is the challenge to wear things I never would have before and the challenge to wear things in different ways (ok, so there’s 2 things I love). That Cabi dress is a dream and it looks so perfect with the denim jacket. Delightful!

    1. Aw thanks. The pattern and the style of the dress are a step outside of my comfort zone but I find I always enjoy wearing it when I finally drag it out of the closet. 🙂

  8. OK, honestly, you have put everything together really well. The ONLY thing I don’t like is the grey cropped jeans (Wednesday). Perhaps they would work with something else? Everything else – KEEPERS! -Just one girl’s opinion though!

  9. Ok so what kind of crops would you get – since you don’t love these gray ones – and neither do I (and you are super thin!). I’d like to get some but I’m a size 10 (and let’s not forget the dreaded A’ish shape) so I steer clear of the skinny jean styles but I see that they really do make ya look skinny. Ideas?

    1. I have some white ones with a rolled cuff that I may need to resurrect. But my all time favorites are the “Kickers” by Joe’s that I have had 2 pair of b/c I wore the first ones out. I wore them yesterday and took pictures so you’ll have to wait till next week! 😉 They have a really deep hem and they are straight, not tapered, and I feel like they’re more flattering than most.

That said, I have the gray crops in tan cords and I love them. So I’m not sure it’s the cut I don’t like here – I think it’s more the wash of the fabric.

      1. Jo-Lynne. is the wash of this fabric as acid wash as it looks in the photos?? it comes across as very 80’s I was looking at maybe ordering these the other day, but was unsure about the color, I think the fit is very flattering.

  10. You look great! I like the hooded pink/coral sweater. I think it is a nice, casual look. I totally understand what you mean about wanting to wear certain clothes despite the weather. That usually happens to me in the middle of the summer. It will be 100 degrees outside and I just have to wear jeans. We have had an unusually cool April and I’ve enjoyed layering and getting a little more wear out of late-season winter purchases.

    1. Oh yeah totally! I do that with jeans. I miss them in the summertime. I have a pair of really thin ones that I’m looking forward to getting wearing in warmer weather. They are almost too thin to wear in the wintertime.

  11. Thursday and Sunday were my favorite looks. You know, in case you’re taking a poll or something. 😉

    1. It’s funny. When someone says which day they like, I always have to go back and scroll up and see which one they mean. AH YES, Thurs is my fave by far.

I’m kind of amazed by how many ppl like the CAbi dress. It’s so much pattern, it’s not really my favorite. But I do like that it’s a change of pace. I get tired of the same pants and tops.

    1. Haha. Yeah, sometimes I actually feel guilty about talking about clothes so much. Surely there is something more meaningful we should discuss.

    1. You do!? That’s hilarious. They are OLD but I try to keep them from wearing out on me because I’m going to be SO SAD when it’s time to put them to rest.

      1. favorite jeans are sometimes better than a best friend, they keep all your secrets, they don’t ever make you look bad and they would never, ever turn on you.

  12. Well, my hubby says “gee thanks” I wasn’t aware of 6pm.com until your WIWW post! Now I have another place to spend his hard earned $$ without ever leaving the house….I am sure he still loves you though (you do realize he knows you on a fist name basis, right?!!) lol. I enjoy these post….if I ever get dressed more than one day during the week I might join in…..right now my 4 month old grandson spits up on whatever I have on so all I really do is change out my ratty tee’s during the day for the next ratty tee for him to barf on. I know it will get better…..it will get better….. it will get better.

    1. Nope. I’m hard on them. I dry them in the dryer b/c if I don’t, they stretch out and are too loose. I just wash on cold and dry on regular. They’ve faded a bit with age, but otherwise have only improved. They are more comfy than ever. 🙂
