What to Wear for At-Home Winter Workouts

Nordstrom Disclosure

Happy Monday, friends! If you’re looking to refresh your activewear for at-home workouts this winter and spring, Zella has a lot to choose from right now.

These are the types of outfits I normally wear for weight lifting and at-home yoga workouts because they’re comfortable and practical, and they look good too.

What to Wear for At-Home Winter Workouts

I usually gravitate to solid leggings, but I couldn’t resist these printed Live In High Waist Ankle Performance Leggings in the purple and coral floral print.

These are one of Zella’s most popular legging styles. They have a comfortable high waist and a 27″ inseam, and the four-way stretch fabric allows for a wide range of motion.

Plus, they’re moisture-wicking to keep you cool and dry, and the smooth flatlock seams won’t rub or irritate the skin. There’s even a hidden pocket on the inside of the waistband, if you need to stash your key or some cash.

One of my favorite workout tops is Zella’s Ava T-Shirt. I think I’m up to three of these now! I just picked up this grey porpoise to go with these leggings.

It has a v-neck and short sleeves, and it skims the body without clinging — perfect for those who don’t want a skin-tight top when working out.

The fabric is soft and comfortable against the skin, and it washes up well. I throw the t-shirt in the dryer, but I prefer to hang my leggings to preserve their elasticity.

I’m also a big fan of Zella’s Strength Performance T-Shirt. This is a newer discovery to me, and I hope they keep it in their lineup because it’s really good.

It fits a little more snug to the body than the Ava T-Shirt, but it’s still not a body-con fit. The curved hemline is flattering, and the crewneck is nice for activities where you’re bending over, so you don’t end up putting on a free show!

This tee is made of a moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabric that’s perfect for high intensity workouts, and they recommend laying it flat to dry. I’ll have to remember that!

I paired it with these Restore Soft High Waist Tulip Crop Leggings in the burgundy. These are made of the same super soft fabric as my Restore Soft Pocket Lounge Leggings, and they feel absolutely amazing against the skin.

They’re a cropped length, and I love the tulip hems and the seaming details.

I also just added these On Cloud X Training Shoes to my closet. I’ve been wanting a pair for a while, and when I saw this white pair with the black accents, I knew they were the ones for me.

These shoes are super lightweight, but they have good support for training workouts, as well as a removable cushioned insole that allows for custom orthotics.

I found these sneakers to run true to size; I have my usual size 8. (I typically size up to a 9 in running shoes, but 8 is my normal size for street shoes and fashion sneakers.)

My Zella low training socks work perfectly with these sneakers — you can’t really see them, but they stay in place.

S’well makes my favorite insulated water bottles, and I recently added this white one to my collection. I love the elevated grooved pattern.

The 17-oz size is my favorite because it fits in my standard cupholders, and S’well’s triple-layered, vacuum-insulated construction keeps my water cold all day long.

What to Wear for At-Home Winter Workouts

I usually like to throw on a sweatshirt after my workouts while I cool down or to drive to and from the gym, and Zella’s Cara Full Zip Hoodie is perfect for winter because it’s thick and cozy and warm.

It comes in several color options, and it runs true to size. In fact, I’m wearing my usual size small in all the Zella pieces in this post.

How about you? Are you working out at home these days, or do you prefer to get outside?

  1. Such great looks & comfortable too! I love those sneakers. I know I’m in the minority but I hate those performance tops and they are everywhere. They look great though! I end up wearing good old cotton tees.

  2. Love the post. The tulip hem leggings look great but I also love the pattern on the others. (BTW, Old Navy has/had lattice hem leggings that I like for a different price point… and quality. But they are fun.)

Just curious, how do the sneakers run width-wise? I have finicky feet and need a wide in most shoes, but I can sometimes get away with regulars.

  3. I’m enjoying the Zella leggings I bought last year. It’s funny, but last March when it was still cold, I got dressed every day in “real” clothes. Apparently, I’ve thrown in the towel because I did wash yesterday and there are 5 pairs of leggings/joggers hanging to dry in the laundry room. LOL.
I keep meaning to tell you, Jo-Lynne that I don’t know how you lived so long WITHOUT an Apple watch. I’ve had mine for almost 3 years and I LOVE it. I’m learning to lap swim (a challenge at my age) and my workouts are loaded onto the watch via a swim app. It works so well. I also like not carting my phone around the house. My watch tells me I have a text message and occasionally I answer my phone on the watch, which means you have to talk into your wrist. My children refer to this as MI6ing.
    Happy Monday!

    1. Yeah, it’s getting hard to pull on jeans when I KNOW I’m going to be at home all day and see NO ONE. My joggers aren’t very warm though, and I don’t have a lot of tops long enough for leggings, so I usually rally after a mental pep talk, ha! I did wear the Zella Restore leggings with a sherpa all day yesterday, and it was so cozy.

  4. I am trying to mix at home and outdoors since I love being outside, even in the cold weather, and my head and body crave vitamin D.
You give me some good ideas for adding to my work-out wear (although I go for lower priced items.) I am sticking with yoga (and so far am up to date on this month’s Breath program!) I have found that amazon has a lot of good workout clothes (I just bought myself a pair of yoga/workout pants and a top to reward myself for sticking with yoga.) I also found some good fleece lined pants for the cold weather on amazon.
I am also getting back to walking, with a program that mixes cardio walking with “regular” walking. I have to take it slowly as I have problems with my hip and piriformis, and PT said to take it slowly, no longer distances for awhile. I even can get my husband to join me walking for most days – a real win since he is working on the house repairs so is up and down stairs, kneeling, painting, etc. all day.
I hope to find some time to do some strength training again, but it is hard to find the time to do 3 work-outs a day (walking, yoga, strength training). Just not enough hours in the day with work. I will try for 2 days a week of that and see if I can be successful.
Another great post. Your fitness journey (and my daughter’s) inspire me. She works out at 5 am before the baby wakes up, and she makes me want to be stronger and more fit.

    1. You don’t have to do all three in one day, though! 🙂 I usually never do more than one. I run or lift weights or do yoga. I try to lift 2x a week and run 3 or 4, so that leaves one or two for yoga. I want to start incorporating that again. I could also do a short yoga workout after I run, I guess, to stretch and relax before my shower. But I’d never do all 3!

      1. True, true. I am trying to do yoga every day for the Breath program, so I get back into it. Then I will aim for 3-5 days a week. I do try to walk every day (since I am not supposed to walk more than a mile, as per PT, at this point.) I will bring weight training back when I finish this yoga 30 day calendar so I can do that 2-3 times a week. I am just trying to get myself back into things after slacking off and only doing something a few times a week. Time to get back to “me” haha!

  5. Love those patterned leggings! I’ve been looking at some Zella items on Nordstrom lately as I’ve not tried their clothes. I’m a big fan of the Aerie real me line leggings and can get the short length. Have you tried this brand? I’m pretty much on the treadmill these days.  I find I can be more consistent and have no excuse to get on it at some point during the day! I strive for first thing if I can. Although my preference is to get outside for fresh air and walk.. I’ve always been a walker/jogger. I get these in each week as well if I can!

  6. I LOVE the Zellas, thanks to your blog! Not only are they affordable, but their quality is amazing as well.

  7. Cute ideas. When I have time I’ll have to check out the t shirts. I walk and just started back up to try and do more yoga at home…… thanks to you recommending Adriene.  I need to be moving more. Thanks for your inspiration. I need accountability for sure. Too easy to sit during dark, dreary Winter weather days.

  8. I drink water better when it is cold! But all of the stainless bottles I have tried make the water taste like metal. I have tried 2 of the big name brand ones and both are the same for me. Keep water cold for hours but tastes like I am licking a cookie sheet! What is your opinion of the Swell brand bottles and taste?

    1. How odd, I thought I replied, and I don’t see it. I don’t have a problem with that taste as long as I don’t let my water sit in there all day. It still tastes fine to me after a couple hours.

  9. Great post – very timely now that there are so many days where the roads are covered in ice here.
I have the black with white sole on cloud shoes. I love them so much that I bought a second pair for when these wear out, but I’m going on 3 years and they are showing no signs of wear.

  10. What size did you go for in the printed leggings and tee? Your usual small? I am often torn between small and medium for leggings. So pretty!

  11. If I needed workout attire, I would definitely look at the pieces you shared in this post.  The floral pants are so fun and upbeat.  I hope that you did get your run in today!  We are having light rain/drizzle with the temp in the 40’s, so not real conducive to spending any time outside.  Enjoy the rest of your day!

  12. I really like that black shirt but I’m worried about the length. It looks just right on you, but I’m 5’9″ – it probably won’t be long enough for leggings for me.

  13. Nordstrom website said the tulip hem leggings have a 13 1/2″ rise. Is that correct?!?!? I ordered the Restore Soft Pocket Lounge Legging from your link but I had to return them because the 10 3/4″ rise was way too high for my short-waisted self. I felt like they fell just below my boobs. Can’t imagine where the 13 1/2″ would land! I’m 5″4″ for reference.

    Love your blog so much!

    1. That sounds like a misprint. I can’t imagine a 13″ rise. I just went up and compared. The rise on these are about an inch lower/shorter than the full length Restore lounge leggings.

        1. I can’t read. Nordstrom says 11″ rise, but even still, that is higher than the lounge leggings and from you described, the rise is shorter. Whuh?? Again, thanks for checking.

          1. Yeah, I also tried them both on, and these definitely have a lower rise than the full length ones, but they still come up over my belly button, which I find very comfortable. I have a very high waist, though.
