What to Wear for Memorial Day BBQ with Lucky Brand

It’s hard to believe, but Memorial Day weekend is almost here! For those of us here in the States, this is a time we set aside to honor those who have given their lives serving in the armed forces in order to preserve our freedom and way of life.

It has also become a weekend that marks the unofficial start of summer, and many of us celebrate with parades, picnics, and backyard barbecues so today I’m teaming up with Lucky Brand to share a casual summer outfit that I think would be perfect for any of those events. Lucky Brand is also running a fabulous MDW promotion that I’m sure you’ll want to take advantage of — 40% off almost everything! (No code needed; prices as marked.)

When I spotted this red and white batik tank, I knew I wanted to style it for Memorial Day or July 4th because it’s festive without being too literal. I’m not one to drape myself in the American flag, but I do like to wear some combination of red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays. (The blue is on my toenails, in case you’re wondering!)

What to Wear for Memorial Day BBQ & Picnics: Lucky Brand Batik Tank with White Cutoff Denim Shorts

This top would be cute with blue jeans or shorts, but I decided to style it with these white cutoff shorts. These are very distressed, but I like the fit, and I think the distressing adds some fun texture to the outfit.

For those of you who aren’t fans of the deconstructed look, these white rollup shorts are cute, and Lucky Brand also has white denim Bermuda shorts as well.

Since most picnics and barbecues take place outside where there is grass involved, I recommend wearing flats. I love these neutral lace-up sandals. The fringe and studded details are fun, and they stay tied pretty well when I wear shorts or cropped pants that don’t interfere with the laces.

While I really like the lace-up style, this strappy sandal is another great option and it is on sale!

I accessorized this casual outfit with these fun silver openwork earrings and a white and silver leather beaded bracelet. I like how they pull from the white in the outfit and keep the overall look summery and fresh.

I’m ready for whatever patriotic festivities the weekend may hold in this easy breezy summer outfit. Now let’s just hope the weather cooperates!

Wondering what to wear for Memorial Day BBQ? I'm styling a casual outfit from Lucky Brand that is perfect for summer cookouts and picnics.

  1. I purchased the strappy style earlier this week (in tan)………cannot wait to wear them………..love those white shorts too !!

  2. That’s really a great tank, Jo-Lynne!! It would look great for so many occasions and with so many colors.
I always forget about wearing red, white & blue for Memorial day. But I was at my mom’s (the 70+ model on my blog) yesterday, and she already had her red, white & blue set out for church on Sunday! The lady cracks me up!
That clickable photo is super cool!!

  3. Very cute outfit! I am curious to know if you have a hard time getting those sandals tied in the back? I purchased a similar steve madden pair and am having a hard time getting them tied correctly… I have seen some people tie them in the front?

    1. It’s a bit of a challenge, but I’m getting better at it, lol! I do sometimes tie them in the front, but they were a little too long that way, and this is a cleaner look.

  4. That is a great tank and such a pretty design. On top of it being Memorial Day Weekend, our granddaughters high school graduation is Saturday afternoon. We are praying it will be live streamed, so that we can watch it. We’re having my kind of weather this morning, 50 hen I got up at 8:15, breezy, and partly cloudy. The high should stay in the 70’s. Yes, PLEASE!

  5. Very cute top. I love the batik like look of the leaves. It would be great for those days that you want to dress in some combo of red/white/blue without looking like the flag. 😉

  6. Very cute outfit. I love lucky brand clothing. Also, thanks for the Nordstrom heads up. I found an adorable top that I had to have! Weather here in the Florida Panhandle is beautiful, not a cloud in the sky. Have a wonderful weekend!

  7. Great first series outfit. I’m loving that top, caught my eye before when you styled it! Our PA weather doesn’t sound promising for the holiday weekend…..right now it’s raining with a pretty good wind blowing, ugh! I’m thinking my patriotic outfit will involve long jeans and my red hoodie, as its supposed to be coolish. Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us!

    1. Sounds like a good plan! I will likely be right there with ya. This weather is miserable, but then, Memorial Day is always dicey in these parts. I may have to save this outfit for July 4th. 🙂

  8. This is such a nice summer outfit! You always make distressed and deconstructed denim look good. I swore I would never wear them, but you are making me rethink that!

  9. Love this outfit, especially the red tank. Too bad it’s almost sold out! Wondering though what size you’re wearing and how their sizing runs. I’m interested in another top and not sure what to order if I get it.

    1. I know, it just started getting depleted, but they do have a lot of other cute tops in similar styles. I am wearing the medium. I tend to be between sizes, and I usually size up in Lucky Brand. Hope that helps!

      1. Thanks, that does help! I did see that they do have the same red tank in plus sizes as well, for those interested. I usually wear Large (or 12), but their size grid says its 10-12, so was concerned it’d be on small side. I think I’ll go up to XL to be safe. Thanks!

  10. Great shirt. Trying not to buy anything until I finish the Adore Your Wardrobe course (on your recommendation). We determined our body types today, which was much different than I expected. Did that happen to you also? Thanks.

  11. How do the shorts fit? True to size? Love them so much and they look as though they fit you perfectly!
