What to Wear for NYE 2020

I’m probably getting ahead of myself here, but I wanted to get this post up in case anyone does want to think ahead to NYE 2020.

While I realize many of us will be staying home and celebrating in our cozies, maybe you have plans for a NYE Zoom party with family and friends, or maybe you’re lucky enough to live in an area where small gatherings with people in your bubble are relatively safe.

However you plan to celebrate, I have a feeling most of us are going to feel like doing something to ring in the new year… especially This One.

This is me waving BUH-BYE to 2020. See ya later! Don’t let the door kick ya…

The idea here is to be comfortable yet festive — a little bit of shimmer is always a good idea on New Year’s Eve!

I shopped my closet for this post! I hosted a NYE party the first year we were in this house, and a friend and I went shopping earlier that day to find something new and fun to wear. I found this sweater on the discount rack at Ann Taylor, and I’ve worn it a few times. It’s the perfect understated holiday sweater.

It has just enough shimmer to be festive, and the pearlized button cuffs make it special. It also has a flattering v-neckline and a body-con fit. Unfortunately, it is no longer available, but I’m describing it in order to tell you what I’d look for if I were shopping for something new this year.

And never fear! I rounded up a bunch of options at the end of this post.

If you’re planning to stay in and party on Zoom this year, throw on a festive sweater with your coziest leggings, and you have the perfect 2020 NYE Zoom outfit!

I’m calling this Party On Top, Cozy On the Bottom… Just add a pair of sparkly earrings, pour a glass of wine, and you’re all set!

And if you are feeling like getting dressed all the way down to your shoes for NYE, I would wear this sweater with my favorite black jeans and pumps. Simple and easy, classy but not stuffy!

These jeans are the AG Farrah skinny raw hem ankle jeans in black ink.

I mentioned in my most recent edition of What I Wore Lately that I love how they’re actually denim. The fabric is 98% cotton/2% elastane, whereas so many black jeans have a lot of rayon and stretch and are more like pants. I also like how the raw hem adds some subtle texture and toughness to the classic outfit.

And those shoes… they were my first pair of Stuart Weitzmans. My mom has long been a big fan of the brand, and once when we were shopping together (it was like 10-15 years ago), we wandered into the store when they were having a sale.

While she tried on shoes, I grabbed these off the sale rack and tried them on for the fun of it, and she offered to get them for me. I’ve worn them so much over the years and they are so well broken in, they feel like wearing slippers with 4″ heels, ha!

It’s probably about time to retire them, as they’re starting to look dated and worn, but I still reach for them when I want to wear pumps and be comfortable, so I had them dyed last winter to give them a little more life. It just goes to show, quality pieces can last a verrrrry long time!

So anyway, to wrap this up! I’d love to hear how you plan to celebrate this year.

If you’re planning to shop your closet for your NYE festivities, I hope this post gives you some inspiration. And if you’re looking to grab something new to wear for New Year’s Eve, I wouldn’t waste any time ordering.

Better yet, do a store pickup if you have that option available. I have a very large order that I actually paid to expedite for a sponsored post, and it’s hanging out in limbo somewhere… C’est la vie! ‘Tis 2020, after all.

Fortunately, it’s just stuff, and stuff can be replaced or done without. I’m just so grateful for health and well-being despite everything this year has thrown at us.

For those who are shopping for something new, I rounded up some ideas below.

And as you plan your holiday menus, here are two delicious and easy champagne cocktail recipes you may want to try this holiday season!

And with that… I’m off to enjoy this COLD but sunny Saturday!

The girls and I are planning to decorate Christmas sugar cookies this afternoon, and then we’re debating whether to watch Elf or Christmas Vacation tonight… which is your pick?

  1. We usually stay home for NYE, thanks to all of the drunk drivers. We are out of the city limits, so we can pop fireworks, which my husband loves to do and the kids love to watch. Some years it cold, some years it not. Some years it’s a drizzly mess. My outfit is always a game day decision. One thing’s for sure, I have my champagne! I may need 2 bottles this year. LOL. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Looking forward to all of your posts in 2021!

    1. Yeah, I miss the old neighborhood where we could walk over to the party and walk back. But my best friends are only 2 miles away, so it’s not too bad. We rarely go further than that, and this year, I expect we’ll just stay in and play it safe. If we make it to the end of 2020 without contracting Covid, I sure don’t want to take any chances for NYE.

  2. I do like the weekend sale roundup–maybe do on Fridays instead of Saturdays to give yourself a day off?  I bought that AT sweater in the gold when you featured it before and have worn it more than once for a festive occasion.

  3. I would love to see more ‘outfit evolution’ type posts. I love it when you analyze what parts of your outfit works and what doesn’t and then you adjust as needed. These are very helpful in learning how to dress for my body type.

  4. I love your sweater and your long star earrings. May I ask where you got your earrings from? We always watch Christmas Vacation every year, but we have Elf too. They’re both good but Christmas Vacation really makes us laugh! Have fun with your daughter making Christmas cookies. Those are such nice memories to make.

  5. I am not getting your replies to comments in my email. I commented on the velvet jeans and you replied, and I did not get an email. I did used to get them—don’t pin me down on when it stopped!

  6. We’re going to be celebrating Christmas and New Year on our own. Best to keep to our household until we receive the vaccine. My nod to the season is a really pretty deep red nail polish and a red sweater. Simply but festive enough for home. I doubt we’ll even be up to ring in the new year on west coast time but instead celebrate via group FaceTime with our three kids living in different parts of the country.
Oh, and well fitting heels are worth the price of gold these days. After years of wearing them to work and out in evenings, I go for comfort.

  7. Your New Year’s Eve outfit is both elegant and practical, especially given how this year has changed holiday celebrations.

For 2021 posts- would you be able to share more ways to update outfits given current trends, as well as a post on considerations when selecting tall boots versus ankle boots for different outfits? Thank you for all of your hard work on the blog; I enjoy it very much and it has been a good stress reliever this year.

  8. If it’s not bitterly cold we will probably have a bonfire with the neighbors to welcome in the new year, so I will be dressed for being bundled up outside.  Dressing cute would be out of place, for sure.  Otherwise we will be in our comfy jammies.

  9. I enjoy the sale round up even though I get many of them to my email. I really look for your recommendations such as the alert to the AT sweater in today’s post. I also enjoy your analytics posts. I got rid of my first pair of Stu’s (short boots) many years ago and regret it to this day. The style came back and they were the most comfortable pair of boots I had ever put on my feet. Take yours to a shoemaker to freshen them up so your not regretful like me.

    1. Yes, I did that – he dyed them to freshen them up. I may need to get them resoled if I’m going to keep them and not sure they’re worth that. But I will probably put them in their box (I still have it!) and hold onto them. They’re looking a tad dated to me at the moment, but I think they’ll come back around.

  10. Merry Christmas!  When I first started reading the blog I thought to myself I’ll be wearing PJ’s on New Years Eve…..then you mentioned that. Lol

I’m ready for Christmas…hard to believe it is now less than a week away. My church where I serve as Children’s Minister has an event tonight where people can go on a hayride thru a couple of neighborhoods to see lights, caroling as they go.  We have a s’mores area…then in the church lobby we’ll have a sugar cooking decorating station and an ornament decorating area for kids. It should be fun and basically finishes up the holiday events, except for Sundays. I’m ok with a break!

You have a great day….have yourself a Merry little Christmas!

  11. Love the idea of shopping in my closet for this New Years! Will most likely be cuddling with my husband watching a movie so very casual. Maybe we will see the new year in…maybe not. Ha! Also love the end of the week sale post and as another suggested posting on Friday would be great. We all need a day off! Christmas Blessings to you and your family and a Healthy New Year ahead for all!

  12. Like usual, you knocked it out of the park again. This outfit looks amazing on you. I have a similar silver sweater with buttons on the sleeve that will go perfect with some new black slacks for NYE. I’d love to have those ‘old’ pumps of yours! They are the perfect pump.  We will be staying in and watching The Holiday. It’s the perfect feel good movie that we watch every year (usually New Years Day). Thank you for all the brightness that you spread throughout the year. . Enjoy your holidays and have a very blessed new year.🥰

  13. I will be staying home for New Years. I usually get together with a. group of friends but we’re playing it safe this year. I love your Saturday sale round-ups, but I also know the importance of not overworking yourself. Weekends are important rest times. Maybe you can do it another day?
Thanks for all that you do to help us stay up to date on fashion!

    1. Yes, that’s the nice thing about the Saturday newsletter – it can be prepped on Friday and Amy helps with that. It can even be scheduled, if we have it all set to go on Friday afternoon. Then I can take Saturday off from posting.

  14. Thank you so much for your work this year! I enjoy your postings very much, and you are very helpful in all you do. God bless you this year, and may next year be a lot better! I love the way you write, you give us a giggle and a smile.😊

  15. I see why you love those Farrah jeans, they look fantastic on you.
Questions: one thing I have always liked about your blog is that it’s interactive and you always respond to questions and feedback. Not sure if I’ve noticed a change in how I get the responses? But it does make a difference because I follow another blogger who never responds so I just stopped commenting but I like her style.
I would say do the Saturday sale post on Friday’s and only post on Saturday’s if you have something specific or special.
Lastly, just keep doing what you’re doing as I enjoy your blog and content. Remember, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it 😉

    1. Thanks, Gloria. It’s a little broke at the moment, or I am, haha! But I’m not planning to change much. I think cutting back on a posting day and moving the extra Sunday newsletter features to Saturday’s (they can be prepped on Friday) will help a lot.

I appreciate your feedback on the comments. I do know what you mean. It gets kind of discouraging to comment a lot and not get a reply.

  16. Great outfit, but what stood out most for me was that you were out shopping for an outfit the day you were hosting a party a couple years back! You must be a much better party planner than me. I spend the day of parties at my house prepping, setting up, and doing touch up cleaning. Weirdly, I actually like doing this stuff but I’d be a hot mess of worry if I were out doing other stuff on the day of!

  17. I totally support you not posting on Saturdays.  A “more robust” email on Saturdays will be very nice.  I enjoy seeing what’s been popular this week.   I don’t comment every day, but I believe that I DO receive an email when you reply.   I can’t imagine the work that you put into each post.  Your attention to detail is what separates you from the herd.  I sense that you’re putting in very long hours and this is taking a toll on your health (your back, hip, and shoulder issues).  I think I can speak for all your loyal followers in saying, take care of yourself!  We love what you’re doing and we are HERE!  xo.

  18. Yes I do receive your reply’s in my email as well as on your blog. Every year we gather at our friends just up the street ( so nice to have a best friend live so close) for a traditional NYE party. There can be as many as 80-100 of us all ages as it’s a family party so needless to say that won’t be happening this year:( although we are sad by that it will be nice to just stay home in our cozies and watch the big ball drop in NYC something we used to do many years ago.

  19. Hi, jolynn, I was wondering what pantyhose you said you buy? You mentioned DK ultra Sheer Control top nude . Where do they sell them?

  20. What a festive, elegant yet casual look!  The Ann Taylor sweater is beautiful.  The sweater and Farah jeans combo is a winner. We are staying home in our casuals for NYE; we are on lock down.  I used to get replies to my comments in my email inbox but that stopped a few weeks ago; not sure exactly when.  I support you not posting on Saturdays; please look after yourself!  Your health and well being is so important especially in these challenging times.  You are the only blogger who posts daily and it is a lot. We all appreciate what you do, your attention to detail, your thoroughness and personal touch.  You also have a lovely community of kind hearted women who support you.    In terms of the movies: love Lampoons Christmas movie and The Sound of Music.  Not sure how or why The Sound of Music is featured every year around Christmas but it is such a feel good classic.  Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks, Yelena, yes, that daily posting started when Cyndi and I were doing our fashion series, and it kind of stuck. It’s a lot, and I’m ready to cut back a bit. 🙂

I forget about Sound of Music. Thanks for that reminder!

  21. In response to Nicole’s question on the hose.. i take it the hose you buy are all sheer and sheer toe? I only wear sheer toe hose and I think you mentioned you only like the all sheer hose.are the ones on amazon and Nordstrom all sheer?

  22. I don’t get your replies in my email but I just usually check back later in the day to read questions and your replies. Today’s post was perfect, Thank you so much for all of hard work and I do look forward to reading your posts everyday but you must take care of yourself. everyone needs a day off.

Merry Christmas to you and your family and wishing y’all a healthy and happy New Year!

  23. This year we will be alone for Christmas, but celebrating with our daughter over New Years. Your outfit is just what I usually wear. I like to just add a sweater or pretty blouse.  We did get to celebrate Thanksgiving and a birthday for a grandson in Texas. It was hard to believe it had been 11 months and saw the other grandson at 8 months for the first time.

  24. Natalie, I believe the hose she was referring to on amazon and at Nordstrom are ultra sheer pantyhose . They are all sheer as far as i can tell and have sheer toe.
    Is this correct Jolynn?

    1. Yes, sorry, I just linked to all because there were so many colors. I definitely would keep them as sheer as possible, unless you are going with black, and then sometimes it’s nice to have them a little more opaque.

  25. I look forward to your posts every day! You have a gift for writing and also for design and fashion! That being said, it will be okay if you decide to take a break during the week! You need to take care of you! Love your outfit today- so beautiful and classy! And the shoes…love! Thank you for all you do! Blessings to you Jo-Lynne and to your family for a wonderful Christmas and joyous New Year!

  26. Before I answer your email questions, I wanted to tell you that you look fabulous in the all black look by your front door. You can see your weight loss clearly, and black is always slimming.
1). I was getting an email in response to my post, but now that I think of it, I don’t think I have recently. I also didn’t get your emails about 3 or 4 times. That happens every now and then and I don’t know why, but then they resume again.

2). I enjoy your Saturday sales post, but I have to admit I usually end up buying things. It’s often something that I resisted buying when you post it, but I see a good sale, or I can’t resist any longer, and I buy it.  I understand that you need a day off, especially after the busyness of the holidays.

    1. Thanks, Patt, funny, I was feeling “fluffy” that day – trust me, I was sucking everything in while Alison was shooting those pix. But thanks, I do love an all black look.

The email replies are definitely not working. I will need to get that fixed asap.

The newsletter not coming – that is odd. I don’t have as much control over that. Sometimes email from services like MailChimp (which is what I use) get stuck in spam folders, or even blocked by an individual’s email provider, and I can’t do much about it. It’s frustrating, for sure.

The only thing I know to tell you is to search your spam and if you find any of my emails, make sure to mark them “not spam” and move to your inbox, so your email provider knows you want to see them. And you can also try adding my email address: [email protected] to your email address book. That’s another way to let your email provider know that my emails are legit. I hope that helps!

  27. Hi, I love your blog, especially when you show us how an outfit came together, or why something works or why it doesn’t. Your Saturday posts are my least favourite, sorry about that. I don’t enjoy the gift guides either, usually don’t look at those. I realize that is part of your job but not helpful to me, personally.
You are by far my favourite fashion blogger !!

  28. I use to get your email replies but the last comment I saw from you to me didn’t come by email too. Love your NYE outfit. You look so beautiful. We always stay home. We don’t like to be on the roads with drunk drivers. I do like your weekend sale round ups but if you need Saturdays off I think you should. You work hard weekdays. If you reply to this I’ll see if it comes email too.

  29. PS After hearing the story about your mom buying you those shoes and her love for that brand, I’d keep them just for that reason. Someday you will be glad you did. Memories of your mama. Plus they look great on you and I didn’t think they looked dated at all in this post. Your blog is so fun to read and has helped a lot this last year when feeling so isolated. Cut back wherever you need. Your health is more important.

  30. I wanted to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas!  Your blog has been such a welcome treat during this awful year. ( I “found” you a few months ago.) Your down to earth delivery, your style- cute and good quality, but also accessible, really speaks to me.  Thank you for what you do!

  31. Won’t it be nice to dress up and see people again?!? Soon hopefully.  Until then, it will be another holiday at home, trying to look and feel festive despite the circumstances.  I did notice that your response to my last two comments did not come through to my email like it used to.  Weird.  And honestly I don’t really read the sale roundup on Saturdays but that’s mostly because I read the blog and daily emails every day so I feel pretty caught up.  I don’t know how you manage to consistently put out such great and thorough content, but girl you’re killing it.  Merry Christmas!

  32. Hi Jo-Lynne! Your blog is my favourite and I love when you show us how an outfit came together, or why something works or why it doesn’t. I have learned so much from you. Someone else has suggested this, show us how to update an item from our closet to make it look current. I say that you should definitely take a day off from the blog and do something fun for yourself or with your family or rest and relax. You have been a blessing to your readers, especially this year and we certainly want you to put your health first. As for the shoes, I say keep them. Comfort is key for me as I have a really hard time finding shoes that I can wear more than once. Besides you have a beautiful memory of shopping with your mom. Have a fabulous week!
