What to Wear to a Casual Holiday Party at Home

When Cyndi and I planned this series for November and December, we intended to include some holiday looks in our 25 winter outfits. I realized this week that we better get right on that because the holiday parties will be starting soon! In fact, my husband’s office party is coming up this weekend.

I’ll be sharing that look on Friday, but for today, I wanted to share a more casual holiday party look — something you might wear to a party at a friend’s house.

This was actually supposed to be my “What I Wore on Thanksgiving” post, but in the end, practicality won out, and I wore my brown riding boots with this outfit instead of the leopard pumps. I was so glad I did because I did a lot of standing, and I was comfortable all day. We spent Thanksgiving at my sister-in-law’s house, so I didn’t have to worry about cooking in an ivory sweater.

Our life is pretty casual out here in the distant suburbs of Philly, so when I go to a holiday party at someone’s house, I usually dress up one of my favorite sweater-and-jeans outfits with a great pair of shoes. I picked up these leopard pumps at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale last month, and I’ve been dying to wear them. Aren’t they stunning!?

Unfortunately, my feet are so not used to wear high heels anymore. I spent the last year recovering from a stress fracture and torn tendon in my left foot, so now, even though my doctor gave me the go-ahead to wear heels, I can’t walk in these for very long. I am planning to practice around the house until my old talent for wearing high heels returns… or until I rip another tendon, whichever comes first! Ha!

I picked up this sweater last week at the J.Crew Factory outlet in Lancaster, PA, when I was there shopping with a friend. I know, like I need another ivory cowl neck sweater in my life. But seriously, I have been wanting one that is a bit longer like this. It’s almost a tunic length, although I don’t think I’ll wear this with leggings. I DO, however, think this outfit would be outstanding with my over-the-knee boots. That would be another option for an at-home holiday party, if you wanted a younger, more edgy look.

For size reference, the sweater runs large. I’m wearing a small. And please pardon the wacky lighting. It was a bit of a challenge to edit these pictures.

This is definitely my kind of at-home holiday party outfit. Bonus if you find a sweater with a little bit of sparkle to make it festive. White House Black Market always has a great selection of festive sweaters, if you’re looking for something special.

In keeping with our Winter Fashion theme, I wanted to show this outfit with a coat. I absolutely adore a red coat, especially at Christmastime. I picked up this red wool peacoat at Nordstrom last winter on their end of season sale. This one is similar. Mine is also a Ralph Lauren.

Doesn’t the red coat totally elevate this outfit??

Because I’m wearing a cowl neck sweater, I didn’t add a scarf, but if it were a super cold winter night, I’d wear a black scarf with this. And gloves. Definitely gloves! I think tech gloves are the best invention since sliced bread.

The earrings I’m wearing are from J.Crew Factory too. They’re only $11. I thought they were pretty for the holidays. I also wore my Veda Split Ring for a fun statement piece along with a few gold bracelets.

  1. Seeing this outfit really makes me wish I’d gotten this sweater instead of the one I chose (which ended up being shorter and more sheer than I like). This one is perfect! I especially love the red coat with this outfit. Gorgeous!!

  2. Stunning as usual Jo-Lynne! I don’t do heels, especially since I’ve had surgery on both ankles. Ha a a blessed day! I’m off to have surgery on my left thumb so I’ll be sleeping the rest of the day away.

  3. I love this outfit! I just got myself a cream colored cable knit turtleneck sweater, which I have been looking for for about 15 years, it seems like. I don’t know why it took me so long to find one I liked. And I have a red pea coat, which is so much fun and so Christmas-y. And if I wore those shoes around the house, it would be my husband’s dream come true. 🙂

  4. I love how elegant this outfit looks, yet it is very simple to wear. Thanks Jo-Lynne, I am definitely going to look into something similar for Christmas at my parents house.

  5. Love the red coat!!! It creates such a polished final look! I am new to your blog and I am really enjoying it. Thanks so much for being a part of my day.

  6. I love this! That sweater and coat length are just right for you. I rarely wear heels but these look pretty and fun.

  7. I just bought those earrings at the JCrew Factory store in Destin. I’ve worn them a ton since I bought them. Love the red coat! It’s time for me to get a new one myself. Red coats always make me happy. 🙂

  8. Jo-Lynne,
This is stunning! The red coat nails it. I adore this outfit, it totally capture the winter/festive spirit, it’s classic yet modern and you look fantastic in red.
I never thought I’d dare to wear a red coat, although I love red as a colour. Now in inspired to try. A coat isn’t really in my budget at the moment, but I may start with a red sweater, and here in the UK the sales will be in after Christmas ????
