Fall Wedding Outfit

It seems like more and more, fall is becoming the new wedding season. In fact, I recently read that October has officially surpassed June as the most popular wedding month. Which begs the question… what to wear to a fall wedding?

Well, if you’ve been wondering, you’re in the right place! Because today I’m styling two dresses from Macy’s that are perfect for fall weddings or other dressy events.

One is a little more formal than the other, but both are appropriate for most traditional fall weddings as long as the dress code isn’t formal.

Of course, these days there are all sorts of new and creative wedding themes floating around, and some are very casual, but this first look is the type of thing I’d wear to a traditional afternoon church wedding in the fall — or any time of year, really!

These Ralph Lauren jersey dresses are always a hit with me, and Macy’s carries a great selection. They’re so comfortable and flattering, and they come in a bunch of different colors and patterns.

You may remember that I styled this one for Easter last spring, and I recently picked up this navy floral number to have on hand for fall events.

It has a body-con silhouette, but it’s a lot more forgiving than other similar styles I’ve tried because it’s fully lined and the jersey fabric doesn’t cling. I love the ruching detail on the side and the way it’s cut high under the arms.

The floral design is actually navy and grey, but it reads as black. I don’t think anyone would notice the difference, so I carried a black clutch.

Rather than go with black shoes, however, I went with these strappy silver block heeled sandals. I love how they lighten up the look and lengthen the line of the leg.

If you’re going to an outdoor reception and there’s a possibility you’ll be walking on grass, I highly recommend a block heel as opposed to a stiletto. These are pretty comfortable as far as 4″ heels go, but you can also opt for a lower heel if you prefer. Just keep the rest of the shoe strappy and delicate like this or this. There’s no quicker way to ruin a gorgeous dress than by wearing shoes that don’t fit the occasion.

FYI, these dresses run true to size — for reference, I’m in the 8.

For a dressier look more appropriate for evening weddings, I’m loving this beaded sheath by Adrianna Papell. I didn’t even realize until I went to put this post together that I ended up with two navy dresses. #ooops #sorrynotsorry

I’m definitely in a navy mood these days — seeing how it’s also the accent color in my new house! In fact, this photo was taken in our dining room.

Isn’t the beading detail on this dress just gorgeous? I will add that this dress runs small. I’m also in a size 8, but I felt like it was a tad snug and going up to a 10 would give me some more breathing room. Plus it might give me a little extra length as well. I forgot that I usually have to go up a size in this brand.

This time I went for a metallic bag and metallic shoes to keep the look dressy enough for an evening event. It will also come in handy for the holidays.

  1. Nice dresses… I really like the beaded sheath . I’ll be looking for a mother of the bride dress for next year… I think I’m going ankle length at least as it will be late May … and I will definitely think of Macy’s. I maybe making a trip across the border if I don’t find anything here at home… have fun with your shoot today:) we are expected a hot day too.. can’t imagine being outside in the heat in fall clothes. Yikes …We’ll hopefully you’ve got some cute t’s and tank tops.

  2. Both dresses are very pretty!  Love the floral one because it’s not too “much” – know what I mean?  And the beading on the solid navy – 😍!

  3. Hey Jolynne,
My son is getting married in October. It is a 3:00 wedding. The bridesmaids are wearing dusty blue and the groomsmen are wearing gray. What color does the mother of the groom wear?

    1. Hey Lori. Congrats!!!I think the proper protocol is for the bride’s mother to choose her dress first, and then for the groom’s mother to choose a complimentary color. At least, when I got married 23 years ago, that was the way it was done. Today things are probably looser – but you might consult the bride. The idea is for the family pictures to coordinate nicely. 🙂

    2. I’d for sure consult with the bride, but I’d think you’d want to stick to the blue/grey theme but in a darker shade or lighter shade depending. Like if bridesmaids doing dusty blue, go lighter or alittle darker and if guys in dark grey, go lighter grey dress etc.  Your bride may not want added pink tones to her photos.  These days the kids are doing such neutral weddings.  Just a thought.

    3. Hey Lori……I was online looking at the Macy’s dress sale and for some reason remembered your text to Jo-Lynne. I had already commented to you that day, but I saw a dress online at Macy’s that may work.  You could match it up to the dusty blue bridesmaids are wearing, but I’d think any Navy should work with them. This dress comes in Navy, mid sleeve which would be great for October wedding and such a pretty style.  Anyway if you want the information. Its called American Living Satin Ruffle Sheath Dress.  It was regular $89 on sale now for $65.99 with additional 15% off making the dress now $56.09.  You’d get free shipping since its over the $49 free shipping limit.  Happy shopping.  I just married off my last of 3 in June.  Two girls and 1 boy.  Glad to be done, but it was fun times.

  4. Both are beautiful dresses and look great on you. The beaded one is my favorite though. I totally get the needing more breathing room but the length looks great on you. You have killer legs and pull this dress off wonderfully.

  5. You know I’m a sucker for dresses, Jo-Lynne. Wouldn’t you be upset if I weren’t predictable and had to comment on how you look so stunning??
The first dress with the ruching is truly my fave….I always love that ruching thing ever since I had a bathing suit with that detail back in high school ( a LONG time ago…LOL).

  6. You look mah-velous!  I just happen to have a wedding the first Saturday in October!  Good info, on where to go for a dress, as we happen to have a Macys up here!  My challenge is I don’t want to look frumpy, but when you’re 63 & a size 16, I’m finding my options are limited, due to a good portion of the dresses are sleeveless!  Me in sleeveless, NOT a pretty sight……I want to dress stylish, have something not above my knees & stay away from the mother of the bride look!  And sometimes those little cover up sweaters look tacky with a nice dress!  I’m leaning  towards black drapy pants & some type of a wow top as its an evening reception at a country club. Your thoughts?

    1. Gina, I think that would look lovely! And I did realize, as I was writing this post, that both dresses are sleeveless — which is not always ideal. I tried to include some 3/4 sleeve options in the shopping widget at the end of the post. But I think the black drapey pants and a wow top would be equally gorgeous.

  7. Both dresses look fabulous on you. I really appreciate the fact that both dresses are navy and not black. I look terrible in black and don’t own a lbd…now navy…that’s the way to go for me. Thanks!

  8. Love both dresses on you: so flattering and classic! Thanks for the reminder on Ralph Lauren dresses; that’s a winner!

Stay cool today – sounds sweltering hot in Philly! The smoke has finally cleared here and we have cooler temps 68 F which is a huge relief. Hallulujah! We can finally go outside without burning eyes, throat, chests, etc….

  9. Both of the dresses are so pretty, and you look very nice in them.  I hope you weren’t too miserable during the photo shoot today!  I’d be sweating, not glistening, like a pig.  Have an awesome day!

  10. Both dresses are beautiful! The navy is softer than black against one’s complexion. I would definitely get more use out of the Ralph Loren. The ruching on the side is a nice touch and the dress is not body hugging. This dress will take you to many different venues, versus the bodycon dress of the other day. The beaded dress is drop dead gorgeous! It’s a little too short for my 5’8” body though. I prefer then to be just above the knee for when I’m sitting. For an evening event – wow!
My last three weddings have been destination wedding. Beach weddings call for a more casual but still dressy summer dress.
Do you ever wear your hair up for an evening affair?

  11. Great looking dresses on you. 🙂  I love how you wore silver sandals vs. navy.  Really lightened things up thats for sure.  I have noticed more October weddings. We have 2 Sept. ones to go to and 1 Oct. also.

  12. Love the navy !
My daughter wedding in October and I will
    Be wearing navy !
Thanks for shoe suggestions so far I hv silver Sandals and
    Black …still trying to decide
If it’s cold it could be I hv Kate spade pumps…
Do you think those are to business for a
    Wedding?
