What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

I get a lot of emails about what to wear to specific events, and one I often get is about what to wear to a wedding. When I came across this Eliza J Embellished Cutout Taffeta Sheath Dress on the Nordstrom website, I immediately thought, FALL WEDDING!

I don’t have a wedding to attend, but I wish I did. It’s been far too long since I’ve been to a wedding, and what girl doesn’t love weddings? But I digress… This dress will also be fabulous this holiday season or if a fancy event crops up this fall.

The sheath silhouette is flattering, and it actually has a bit of stretch to it, so it would be comfortable to wear for hours. It is fully lined and very well made — a dress you could have in your closet for years.

The crushed taffeta lends a gorgeous texture to the sheath silhouette, and the cutout detail with the rhinestone hardware at the neckline adds a touch of glamour.

I’m such a fan of Eliza J dresses, and of course y’all know how much I love shopping at Nordstrom. I grew up in a small town in Virginia and shopping was, shall we say… limited. When I got to college in Massachusetts, my BFF introduced me to Nordstrom and I’ve been a fan girl every since.

Of course, nowadays with the Internet, you can shop Nordstrom from virtually anywhere within the U.S. Their free shipping and free returns make it super easy to order a few sizes if you’re unsure.

In this case, I would suggest ordering your normal size and the next size up to compare. I am wearing my usual 8, and it is pretty snug. (I’m also wearing shapewear — these control shorts are my secret weapon under fitted dresses.)

I styled it with my nude patent leather Sam Edelman Patti Sandals, but they are low inventory at the moment. I was wishing I had the iconic Stuart Weitzman Nudist in this gorgeous platinum in my closet, but alas, I dream…

The Steve Madden Stecy is another option. They’re a little more substantial than the Patti, and they have a slightly higher heel. Either the nude or silver would work.

I carried this black patent leather convertible clutch, but it also comes in beige, and I was wishing I had that color so it would match my shoes. Not that you have to match your shoes, but I felt like the black was a little heavy with this.

This little silver mesh clutch or this crystal minaudière would actually be perfect with this outfit because they pick up the rhinestone detail on the dress.

I kept my accessories very simple — perhaps too simple. There are tons of options, of course, but no matter how you accessorize it, this dress should be the star of the show. It’s so gorgeous on it’s own, I wanted to keep the shoes and accessories in the background, so I went with small studs and a stack of glittery bangles.

Nordstrom carries a ton of Eliza J cocktail dresses like this one, if you have fall and winter events coming up. In fact, I have another one I want to share with you later this week, so stay tuned!

And, I would venture to say that this could be a year round dress?
Great pick—now since you don’t have a fall wedding to attend, I’m thinking you need a fabulous dinner out!!

  2. Very pretty dress! I would love sometime if you could do a post about shapewear? There are just way too many choices out there! I’m looking for a good basic shapewear and just don’t know where to start!

  3. LOVE you in that green, Jo-Lynne. Being a redhead, I’ve always adored green. Not only is it my favorite color, but my best color. That dress is so gorgeous that I’m trying to come up with an excuse to buy it! Have a wonderful day.

  4. I agree with Mireille, this is a beautiful dress and it looks great on you! This would be awesome for my company Christmas party. I really like the neck detail as it eliminates the need for a necklace.
