What to Wear to a Casual Holiday Party at Home

Let’s discuss What to Wear to a Casual Holiday Party at Home. We recently discussed what to wear to a company holiday party, and I focused on cocktail attire. Most home parties don’t call for so much fancy. For holiday parties hosted in people’s homes, I usually go for trousers or dressy jeans with a festive top. Here are three easy-to-wear looks to inspire your holiday outfit planning.

Although a holiday party at home is usually fairly casual, you’ll definitely want to turn it up a notch with a fab accessory or two and maybe some sparkle in your outfit. I am updating this post as of 11/8/15 with current product links. Enjoy!!!

What to Wear to a Home Holiday Party: Festive Casual

You can always pull out your favorite dressy skinny jeans and pair them with a sparkly top or sweater. This is the route I usually take. This type of outfit is easy to wear, it’s comfortable, but with the sparkle in the top and a few key accessories, it’s definitely holiday party appropriate.

Here’s another fun idea for a casual but festive holiday outfit. Take it up a notch with white on white. The components can still be fairly casual, but putting whites together instantly elevates an outfit to something a little bit special. I love this embellished cowl neck sweater from White House Black Market. It is no longer available, but I linked to similar ones below.

You could wear it with gray jeans or cords, but I think it looks stunning with these white cords I found at Nordstrom. Or perhaps you have white cords or jeans in your closet. Accessorize with silver and gray, and you have a monochromatic look that is comfortable but special enough for a holiday party.

For an edgier look, consider a pair of leatherette leggings. I KNOW. A bunch of you are going to tell me you can’t pull it off, but if you’ve been wanting to try them, these are super on trend this year, and what better time to debut an edgy new look than a festive holiday party?? I found these at Nordstrom. There are tons to choose from, and they’re not that expensive.

I’d pair these with a blouse or something not too form fitting to offset the impact of the pants. This outfit calls for a great shoe. You could totally wear black pumps, but I chose a shootie to feature in this look.

Since the outfit is a statement in and of itself, I would go light on accessories. I chose one fabulous pair of earrings (Stella & Dot, of course) and a metallic clutch. And I’m totally crushing on that limited edition red nail polish by Bobbi Brown.

  1. I love the festive holiday outfit with the leather style pants. I actually just talked myself into buying a pair for different holiday celebrations too! I love them more than I thought I would because I skated a little outside of my comfort zone:) I like what you paired them with. Great ideas!

  2. Thank you so much for the white on white outfit suggestion. I have all the pieces to put that look together in what I think will be perfect for Christmas Eve at my Parents. Most of the other Holiday events will be at my house. Will you be doing suggestions for the hostess?

  3. Oh, here’s a related question — what do you do when there’s a holiday party at someone’s house & you’re expected to remove your shoes in the house? I always end up trying to plan my entire outfit around a look that won’t be utterly ludicrous without shoes on!

    1. Uggghhhhhhhh that is SO my pet peeve. Especially when you’re not prepared. If you ARE prepared that that’s their custom, definitely plan your outfit around some cute slippers.

  4. LOVE the white look! I tend to go toward white and pastels in the colder months. I’m fair with dark hair and blue eyes and it seems like the pastels and white are more complimentaty to my skin and hair. I love the stripe you are wearing and the kind of berry colored top, but I seem to look kind of washed out in those shades. You look great!
