What to Wear to a Summer Wedding

Wedding season is upon us so today I’m partnering with Kohl’s to talk about what to wear to a summer wedding!

Wedding season is upon us, so today I'm sharing what to wear to a summer wedding. This gathered sheath dress is so flattering and comfortable!

When I was shopping at Kohl’s for this post, I found a huge selection of summer dresses that fit the bill, and most are under $100. I love how they even have a Wedding Guest section on their website. Then you can drill down and sort by style and/or length.

If the invitation specifies formal attire, you would probably want more of a cocktail dress or even a floor-length gown, and if it specifies casual attire, a maxi dress might be more appropriate, but a classic sheath or fit-and-flare dress is the ideal solution for just about anything in between. I always go for a sheath dress because it works best for my curvy body type.

More specifically, I’m all about the pleated sheath dresses right now. I love how the ruching on the side helps camouflage any extra bulk in the midsection, and the stretchy fabric skims the body without being clingy. Kohl’s has a ton of dresses in this style, and they also have lots of cute shift dresses and fit-and-flare styles if that’s what you prefer. (If you have more of a pear shape, you might prefer a fit-and-flare dress to a sheath.)

This particular dress is by Chaps — it’s their Printed Pleated Sheath Dress, and it comes in 3 color combinations. I really like the pink one, but I didn’t notice it when I was shopping in the store. For size reference, I’m 5’5″ and 140# and I’m wearing a medium.

After I had my dress picked out, I wandered over to the shoe department. You cannot go wrong with a metallic shoe because it goes with any color, and this style of dress sandal is definitely the trend du jour. Just about every shoe brand has a variation on this style right now. I love it because it is feminine and flattering, and you can find them in a modest heel height.

I’m wearing my regular size 8, and they fit perfectly. The toe is quite pointy, so if you have square-shaped feet, you might want to go up a half size. I could probably wear an 8.5, but they didn’t have that size in my store and the 8s are fine.

The website says that the heel is 3.5 inches. I am shocked. I would have guessed 3 at the most. Because of the ankle strap, they’re quite easy to walk in. I tried to find some lower heel options for those of you who say you can’t wear heels. These or these could work for an evening wedding. I don’t know that I’d wear the glitter to a daytime wedding, but I guess it depends on the formality.

Other strappy sandals at Kohl’s that I like a lot are these and these, but they are high too. I almost ordered that 2nd pair in the light blue to show with this dress, but I decided to keep the shoes neutral and add color in the handbag instead.

I thought this coral convertible clutch added a pretty pop of color, and coral is a bit unexpected. Normally if I wanted to add a color to a black and white outfit, I’d go for red or maybe pink, but I think the coral is really pretty with this and it’s nice for summertime.

For jewelry, I added hoop earrings, and intertwined bangle (LOVE THIS!) and a long necklace, although I actually wish I hadn’t added the necklace. I feel like it’s too much with the busy print in the dress. If I style this dress again, I’ll probably go with bigger earrings and no necklace. Or perhaps a shorter, chunkier necklace would work. The nice thing about a dress like this is the accessorizing possibilities are endless.

This is a classic look that would work for almost any wedding or special event you might be attending this summer.

  1. Funny! I have a wedding coming up in August. I got my dress for the wedding at Chicos and a dress for the rehearsal dinner at Kohls. Both should be delivered today!

  2. We also spend 2 weeks in Maine every summer. Enjoy your trip. Hope you post pictures from the beautitiful state of Maine.

  3. Ah…you know what I’m going to say, right Jo-Lynne!! You are beautimous (yes, I made up that word) in a dress—a vision of loveliness!! So glad you’re wearing this!!
And really, this one in particular is quite versatile. You could easily add a tee over the top, and make it look like a skirt!! Or your denim jacket could make it more casual!!
    You really do look stunning!!

  4. I love that dress. Finding something good for a wedding is always a bit of a challenge for me. I love shopping at Kohl’s, too. They always have such a variety and good prices.

  5. Love that you are partnering with Kohls. They are my go to” store for tops, dresses & shoes! And when I want to replicate one of your outfits, I often go to Kohls on-line. I’ve also been able to get a few tops from Loft as well. I wear an XL or 16, so sometimes I don’t always find that size in my local Loft. Also, I need a new dress for church, so this came at a perfect time! A dress shopping I will go. Our local Kohls doesn’t have a lot of dresses, but I’m an on-line shopper anyway. We had our Maine trip already & had picture perfect weather this time. Beach in the morning, outdoor pool in the afternoon, and the grandkids did the indoor pool at night! One morning, we got out of the condo early, and did breakfast on the beach. The grandkids thought that was the greatest thing ever! Can’t tell you how much we love Maine! Good luck with all the packing!

  6. Thanks, Jo Lynne. I’m attending my cousin’s 50th anniversary celebration in August. We are on the same wave length. I purchased a cute fit & flare dress and sandals. Am waiting to try on dress first before adding accessories.

  7. Hello there… great dress! U give such wonderful tips .even though you are shock about the age of your readers it should make u feel great. Also u are not far from 45 lol. This is a new world what u wear does not define age. Thanks for all u do

  8. You look beautiful! I love this outfit from head to toe. You always look stunning, and elegant.

I read the results of your survey. I can understand why you might be shocked at the age of your readers. I am 50, but love your blog. You dress youthful, yet you always keep it elegant and chic. As I’ve said before, your writing style is wonderful. I look to you for style inspiration. I like to look youthful, but not like I’m trying too hard. You also offer styling tips that are extremely helpful. And, your style of writing makes me a huge fan! I even share things you write with my husband. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Julie! I knew there were a lot of older readers, but I didn’t know they outnumbered the younger ones. I think it’s b/c when I started blogging, it was primarily all women my age and younger. So I was used to having a younger audience, but I guess it’s evolved over the years, as blogs have become more mainstream. I’m so glad you enjoy my writing. That means so much!

  9. I got my LBD that I wore to a wedding recently from Kohl’s. On clearance. And I got so many compliments on it. I ran out of time before I could shop for shoes. Absolutely love those shoes you are wearing!

  10. You look great! I have this dress and love it. It’s flattering and comfortable. I love the coral purse with it.

  11. I know that you aren’t fond of wearing dress but I gotta say this dress looks amazing on you!! Super pretty and versatile for more formal events.

  12. That dress looks great on you- beautiful! I agree that the necklace is not needed (too busy). The coral handbag is a nice touch of summer color to the black and white – love that!
Unfortunately, for me, I NEVER have good luck at Kohls. Everything is always such a mess and I just don’t have the patience to look through unorganized racks of clothes and many of their clothes have a weird chemical smell to them. Do you ever shop at Kohl’s online?

    1. I actually do shop a lot at Kohl’s online. For this, I did some of both. I picked out a few dresses in the store, as well as the jewelry. Then I came home and tried them on and decided the one I wanted to feature and then ordered the shoes and handbag. I expect the stores vary depending on the management. I think that’s true of most larger retailers. The one I go to is always organized and nice to shop in.

      1. I bought a really cute black blazer/jacket from Kohls online about a year ago after seeing it on Pinterest 🙂 It was only $29 and it’s one of my favorites actually! I’ve only tried going inside one local store and had the experience I mentioned above ….bummer, but I like searching for specific pieces online. Thanks for sharing your process of putting together your outfits!
