What to Wear to a Spring/Summer Afternoon Wedding

Hello, friends! We’re in the home stretch! This is the final week of 22 Days of Spring Fashion. It still pretty much feels like winter here in Pennsylvania, but what can you do?

I’m hoping for a little warm-up this weekend for Easter, but only time will tell. Meanwhile, we shot this look last Saturday.

This dress could be a nice option for an afternoon wedding, graduation, Easter Sunday, or other dressy events you may have coming up this spring.

While I like a lot about it, I was actually kind of disappointed when I uploaded these pictures. First of all, let’s discuss the positives.

It’s a very well-made dress. I really like the quality of fabrics and attention to detail. It’s fully lined, and the dress itself is a nice, thick cotton/polyester blend with just enough stretch to make it comfortable. The lining has stretchy stuff in it as well.

The split neckline and split-cap sleeves are unique details that take the classic sheath to the next level.

That said, when I saw these pictures, there were a few things about the fit that bothered me.

It’s a little low under the arms — not enough to expose my bra… well, okay, there were a few pictures I didn’t use because it did show my bra from certain angles — but I really dislike when skin shows between my arm and the dress. This is a common problem with tank tops and sleeveless dresses. Maybe it’s because I’m short-waisted, or maybe it’s because I have a little extra going on in the chest region, I don’t know, but it bugs me.

The other issue I have with this dress is that it wrinkles easily. I ironed it at home, sat carefully in the car for 10 minutes, hopped out to shoot these pictures, and I have all those creases across the hip area.

I realize that most structured sheath dresses do that, but I wish there was a solution because it’s annoying!

But besides all that, the periwinkle blue is gorgeous, and it has a super flattering silhouette.

For size reference, I followed the advice on the Nordstrom website and ordered a size 10, and it is none too big. If you’re considering this dress, definitely size up one from your normal. If you’re in between sizes, you may want to even go up one more. I typically wear a 6 or 8 in dresses, if that helps.

I accessorized with simple nude strappy sandals and a oyster-white shoulder bag.

I love this bag because I can tuck the straps inside, and it becomes a clutch. It’s my go-to summer dress-up bag, and I hate that I can’t link to it, but I did find a few similar bags that would serve the same purpose that I linked at the end of this post.

I kept my accessories simple with a mixed metal cuff bracelet and white stone chandelier earrings; and after some debate, I added a delicate 3-disc necklace, although I don’t think it’s necessary to wear a necklace with this dress.

Overall, I really like this dress, but it would fit better if I weren’t quite so busty, and I do wish it didn’t wrinkle so easily.

That said, it’s great quality and very flattering, and if you need something like this for Easter or a wedding or other event coming up this spring, it’s definitely worthy of your consideration!

  1. Love your dress this morning. Wish I could wear those sandals. Any suggestions for simple nude strappy sandals that are 1 1/2 heel (2 inches max) and more of a block heel or wedge than kitten. Thanks! Have a great day!

  2. I share your same sentiments on the dress. It IS a beautiful periwinkle blue but there is nothing about that dress that I would wear. I too am short waisted and the upper arm is NOT something I’m crazy about sharing with the world especially the underarm!! LOL The color is beautiful on you and you actually wear the dress well. Oh, don’t like it either when dresses crease like that after sitting down.

  3. Love the dress on you. BUT I Do See THE Issues YOU Mentioned. Dresses are so hard to find for me. Most too short. Then the hose issue. I don’t go bare anymore. Didn’t mean to capitalize all that. 🙂 have nothing to wear for Easter but don’t think God cares what I have on. I got some floral pants but think I’m returning. Too flashy for my personality.

  4. Oh I love the periwinkle color, in fact that’s the color my bridesmaids wore almost 29 years ago. The detail of the collar and sleeves really adds to the dress:)
    Have a great day

  5. That color is LOVELY on you…what a beautiful dress!   I’ll enjoy you wearing it bc it couldn’t happen for me in that particular style with my shape.  I DO plan to look into a pair of those sandals, though.  The nude color looks so versatile and really elongates your legs.  Very pretty Jo-Lynne!

  6. I love the periwinkle blue and the elegant sleeves. Those strappy sandals make your legs look they go on for miles – I need some shoes like that!

  7. So pretty for spring!
With a fall wedding coming up…
Some great points to think about with
    My dress.
    Thanks for shoe ideas…
I’m also looking for a two inch heel.

  8. Pretty dress! The arm hole issue is REAL! Often the deal breaker for me with sleeveless tops and dresses. I find as I have aged, that has become an increasingly unattractive area (who knew you could get fat in your armpits, even if you are not heavy…). To wear sleeveless, the arm hole has to be just right.

  9. You look very cute! But I wish the waistband weren’t so high! I don’t like it when things hit me on the ribs, I like it to hit my natural waist. No one is making that now and it’s discouraging! That’s my vent for the day…

    1. I see what you’re saying, but that is my actual waist, lol. I often have a hard time with sheaths having the waist too low for my body, so in that respect, this dress works for me. I think my chest is just too big for it. 🙁

  10. What a beautiful color!  I too noticed the wrinkles.  The wrinkles are one of the main reasons I don’t like wearing linen.  It seems like you look at it wrong, it wrinkles.  It’s in the 50’s here, looks like rain, windy, and rather chilly.  By Wednesday our highs will be in the mid to upper 70’s.  All of us seem to be on the weather roller coaster.  Have an awesome day!

    1. Yeah, and I’m used to that with linen, but this isn’t linen. I thought it would hold up better to sitting. I’ve got another dress I’m sharing later this week that is a stretchy material that doesn’t even wrinkle if I ball it up and pack it in a suitcase. So much less fuss. And 70 degrees sounds heavenly. It was 25 here this morning.

  11. what a pretty dress – very flattering on you! But you know what else I was thinking when I was reading this post?? I was thinking – gosh, what a pain to have to have your mani and pedi looking flawless all the time for photo shoots!! haha. The split neckline and split-cap sleeves really make this dress!

  12. So beautiful on you. I know you mentioned the things you don’t like but its gorgeous on you.  I always have trouble this time of year wanting to wear a dress when my flabby white legs that haven’t seen the sun. 🙂  With the weather we are having, I might opt for blush dress pants and navy top for Easter this year.  I think this one would be perfect for Easter at your parents.  Have a great time away.

  13. When I clicked on the link you gave for the dress, I noticed that the picture on the Nordstrom website is of a perfectly smooth dress. No wrinkles! Ha! That is a little deceptive, huh? Well, I agree. It is a lovely dress. But I guess a few wrinkles are what we have to endure for garments with any significant amount of cotton. And maybe because it’s a solid we notice it more. I bet we wouldn’t notice those wrinkles in a print. But it is lovely on you, Jo-Lynne!

  14. Hi, I have a sleeveless dress I bought from Loft with one of the same problems you are having (bra being seen since it is sleeveless). Do you know of a bra brand or style which might work with this issue? I really don’t want to return the dress! Thanks!
