What’s On Your Nightstand?

When I went to the She Speaks conference in June, I found myself in the unfortunate predicament of being in an airport all by myself with nothing to read.  After meandering around the magazine stand for a while, I picked up a copy of Sophie Kinsella’s The Undomestic Goddess for my reading pleasure.  I had never read any of Ms. Kinsella’s books before, but I had heard her name thrown around.

The Undomestic Goddess is a the epitome of "light reading".  It was exactly what I was looking for during my plane ride.  I read it cover to cover on the 1.5-hour plane flight.  If you’re looking for something thought-provoking and believable, this is not a book for you.  If you’re looking for something light and fun to read while sitting on the beach and keeping an eye on your kids, this is it.

Here’s the blurb from the back cover:

Workaholic attorney Samantha Sweeting has just done the unthinkable.
She’s made a mistake so huge, it’ll wreck any chance of a partnership.

Going
into utter meltdown, she walks out of her London office, gets on a
train, and ends up in the middle of nowhere. Asking for directions at a
big, beautiful house, she’s mistaken for an interviewee and finds
herself being offered a job as housekeeper. Her employers have no idea
they’ve hired a lawyer–and Samantha has no idea how to work the oven.
She can’t sew on a button, bake a potato, or get the #@%# ironing board
to open. How she takes a deep breath and begins to cope–and finds
love–is a story as delicious as the bread she learns to bake.

But will her old life ever catch up with her? And if it does… will she want it back?

As I said — light reading.  But very fun.  Disclaimer: I give this book a PG-13 rating for language and sexual content.

  1. Yes, the first shopaholic book still makes me smile – I love the letters back and forth from her to the bank or the credit card company, and just saying the word “Finnish” makes me laugh out loud!

  2. Her shopaholic books are very funny, too. They reminded me a little of someone I know and who is a blast to take shopping.

  3. Sophie Kinsella books are fun to read, very funny. I bring them to work to read at lunchtime and I usually find myself LOL right int he lunchroom but I don’t care, I’m enjoying the book. I’m awaiting her new book at my local library to dig into it, in the hopes it’s as good as her others.

  4. My sister told me that she liked Kinsella’s stand alone books (this being one of them) a bit better than the Shopaholic ones…I’ve only read some of the Shopaholic ones (loved them) so I’ll have to find this one and give it a try. I would get twitchy if I was getting on a plane and didn’t have a book!

  5. I’m a fan of Kinsella most of the time. I got tired of the Shopaholic character eventually and stopped reading that series. But her other books are fun. If you enjoy British chick lit check out Marian Keyes. She sometimes has a little more serious tone, but it still fits comfortably in the beach read category.

  6. I read that one last year, very cute quick read. I thought it was actually better than her Shoaholic series which are pretty predictable. Great review.

  7. oo I am going to the beach at the end of the month.. I should totally look into reading this book.. I love light reading while listen to the sounds of the ocean.. (I guess this year I will be listening to a toddler as well).

  8. This sounds perfect for my right before bed, ready to unwind reading. I had been thinking about the Shopaholic books but this author is now officially on my ‘to check out of the library’ list.

  9. Was not so keen on the first shopaholics book I tried (I got so grumpy with the character!) but have just read the shopaholic/pregnancy one and enjoyed it much more.

On my bedside table I have several photography manuals, and a Karen Kingsbury novel.

  10. I’ve read all of the Shopaholic books except one, and another standalone, but not this one. I’ll make sure it’s on the to-read list for when I’m looking for a chick lit fix.

  11. I’ll have to check this one out for sure. I just finished reading the Tori Spelling book Story Telling, which was really interesting! Thanks for the tip!

  12. I really enjoyed this book. As others before me have mentioned, the Shopaholic books are really entertaining as well. She has another stand alone book called, “Can You Keep A Secret?” which in my opinion is even better.

  13. Honestly, out of all of her books this one was my least favorite though I still enjoyed it. My point is that if you liked this one, you’ll really like the other ones. Check out “Remember Me?” which is her newest book and lots of fun as well.

I agree though — it is the epitome of light reading, but sometimes thats all I can handle.

    Is that sad?
