When It Rains, It Pours

Quite literally, in fact.  I feel like I lived two weeks in the past three days.  This weekend was a flurry of rain showers and thunder storms and DIY projects and sick kids and social events.  How ’bout you?

Friday night Shannon and I drove in the driving rain to Sarah’s home where we met up with a bunch of other local bloggers for Wisk’s Bubbles and Bubbly event.  We first compared BUBBLES (Wisk’s regular laundry detergent with their HE version) and then the BUBBLY (two different kinds of champagne.)  You can probably guess which experiment was more popular.  Please forgive my blurry Blackberry photos.  I hear the iPhone takes pretty good photos.  I wonder if it does better than the Blackberry.  Can anyone confirm?

Look at Sarah double-fisting it.  Now that, my friends, takes balance and coordination — two skills which I unfortunately lack.

Here are a few more pictures I borrowed from Sarah’s post.

It was a delightful evening until I arrived home and found out my daughter had come down with a fever.

My kids are prone to fevers, so I was much more concerned with my Saturday night plans than with my daughter’s well being.  Because that’s the kind of sensitive and caring mom that I am.  It occurred to me as I climbed into bed that it could be more than a mild fever, and I remember praying as I nodded off to sleep, “Lord, please let this just be a fever.  Or anything that doesn’t involve puke.  Or, you know, the swine flu.”

We woke up the next morning to a chipper but feverish child — an unusual combination, but one I was thankful for.  Despite her feeling under the weather, we spent the entire afternoon tiling our kitchen backsplash.

That was a stencil, by the way.  I never really cared for it, it’s a tad busy for my tastes.

It still has to be sealed and grouted, of course, but it already looks SO much better than it did before.

On Sunday, I hopped a train to NYC with Melissa and Sarah for a LeapFrog sponsored event on internet safety.

We had a great time, but the best part of the trip was walking back to Penn Station down Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue, window shopping and discussing terribly significant topics such as perfume fragrances and the most flattering style of boot.

Needless to say, I’m ready for an uneventful day at home, which it looks like I’ll be getting because that fever my daughter had on Saturday?  My son has it today.  Fortunately it’s been mild, and I’m just thankful to say that so far it doesn’t involve puke.  Or, you know, the swine flu.

  1. You did have a busy weekend! So glad that your daughter is feeling better, and sorry about your little man. It is not a good time when they don’t feel good. We have been lucky, which is shocking for everyone who knows Boo. lol

I LOVE the back splash! We don’t have one, but I want one. Maybe next year…

  2. It’s really a nice DIY project. Cutting the tiles is the hardest part, and if you can borrow a tile saw, then that saves some expense. Otherwise, it only cost us about $200.

  3. The fever with no other symptoms is weird. My daughter ran a fever last week – for four days – not really any other symptoms, just the one that keeps her out of school the entire time – and for 24 hours after it is gone.

The back splash looks AMAZING! I’m very impressed!

  4. I have several comments today-
    1) you should try taking the back off your blackberry and clean your camera lense. My husband’s bb pictures were much blurry than mine but dramatically improved after he cleaned the lense.
    2)I LOVE the backsplash!
    3) Don’t you just love taking the train into NYC? My husband does it all the time for work and I’ve done it once- there’s just a sort of romanticism about it. I’m hoping we can go back soon because we are moving in January (hopefully!) and we want to do an NYC weekend one last time.

  5. Wow, the tiling looks amazing!! Great job!

And you know the stenciling you had before? I went to an open house this past weekend and that same stencil filled an entire stairwell. Wow, busy much?

Looks like a jam-packed few days… hopefully the sick kiddos won’t give you too much excitement at home!

  6. I love how your backsplash turned out! I would really like to do something like that in our kitchen…if we ever get around to fixing it up!

  7. I’m so jealous. Of the new kitchen and the blogging events. I don’t even know any bloggers that live close enough to me that we could get together, much less really awesome bloggers. You ladies are so lucky.

  8. Jennifer, where do you live? You might be surprised. 🙂 I put out a notice about having a blogger meetup, like 2 years ago. Blogged it, twittered it, and got a group together of like 15 bloggers! We’ve grown now to over 40.

And if that doesn’t work, do what I did and cajole your real life friends to start blogging. I did that too, lol. I think 5 or more of my friends have begun blogging since I started.

  9. Busy, busy, busy!

I hope your kids get to feeling better soon. FiFi my youngest gets these “mystery fevers” that last several days and have no other symptoms. Now I just give her Motrin and make her rest and only take her to the doctor if other symptoms appear or she just looks really, really sick.

    I love the new backsplash.

Are the train tickets from Philly to NYC affordable? Train tickets from Baltimore to NYC are more expensive than plane tickets so we just took the Megabus last time which was quite pleasant.

  10. Round trip tickets are $21 from Trenton (NJ Transit). We drive to Trenton, park for $13 and take the train into Penn Station. 🙂 We could go from Philly, but they are Amtrack, and they cost more.

  11. At our house, both of my kids had mild fevers with cold type symptoms for a day. Then seemed to improve except for a mild cough and runny nose for 2 or 3 days, and then got hit with high fevers and nasty coughs for a day or two. That’s been the pattern of the virus going around here that has had more than 30% of my daughter’s school out at one time last week. They are not testing but assume that it is swine flu. I hope that’s not what’s happening to your kids, but you might watch out for it!

    p.s. love the backsplash!

  12. My daughter came down with that fever thing a couple of weeks ago when my sister was visiting. We had no sooner headed out on her first full day with me than the school called, telling me to pick up my daughter. I dropped the poor girl at home, got her settled in front of the T.V. with some o.j. and a thermometer, then took off with my sister to resume our day. Talk about being a great mom! I can relate, sister.

  13. The backsplash looks fabulous! You should both pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. Yay!!

  14. Whew. I agree with you, that stencil was too busy. It looks SOOOOO much better now.

I just had one of those days too… I feel like I crammed 5 days worth of stuff into 1 day. Ugh.

Hope the kids will stay well.
