Where’s the Christmas Spirit?

So far this holiday season has seemed rather . . . dull.

“I’m just not feeling it this year,” I’ve said twenty times if I’ve said it once.

The tree is up, and it is beautiful.

Christmas music echos throughout the house.

The kids are eagerly counting down the days till Santa leaves a toy store under the tree.

Christmas presents arrive daily by UPS and the USPS.

Even the blog is festively attired!

So what’s missing?

I think I just found my answer.

  1. Thanks for sharing this link. It’s so easy to forget what and Who we should be celebrating. Merry Christmas to you!

  2. I’ve felt the same way too, and I usually do every year when the onslaught of commercials, ads, sales, catalogs start around Halloween. Every year I strive to find a balance between the gifts and the Santas and the decking of our halls and the story of the most wonderful but simple birth. It’s hard!

This year we’ve been doing Ann Voskamp’s Jesse Tree Advent devotionals that she wrote and offered as a FREE download. It’s been a blessing!!

    1. I have heard several people talking about that. Perhaps I should download it. Is it too late to start? My husband has been having devotions after dinner on the events leading to the birth of Christ, but I think I need my own personal reflection and devotion time, which once again I have been neglecting.

  3. Thank you for sharing. I always seem to find my peace at our Christmas Eve service which is a candlelight service. I always cry as soon as the first notes of the “real” Christmas music are sung. For as long as I remember, my mom would make Jesus a birthday cake and we’d sing “Happy Birthday” to Him. It’s something we continue to do and all of the children look forward to it. (Red velvet, in case you were wondering 🙂 ).

    1. Whoops that didn’t sound right. I don’t love that you are feeling dull, I love that you are being honest about it. Praying His peace washes over you and His spirit renews your heart with hope this advent. I’m going to check out AnnV’s devotion Holly mentioned. Just what I need too!

  4. My husband kept saying that it just didn’t feel like Christmas this year – and somehow, I knew what he meant. We had all the decorations and the Christmas music, but the “feeling” wasn’t there. I know that gifts aren’t the answer, and truly, when the weather got cold and we started having snow, it DID help. But the true Help came when I got back in gear with my personal devotions and I just “happened” to be reading in Isaiah. What a great reminder of the True Reason for the Season! We also decided that we needed to dial it down a notch and relax a little. We didn’t need to say “yes” to everything and we didn’t need to worry about all the things that life was throwing at us right now – we’re regrouping and will just enjoy the holidays! 🙂
