Winter Outfit Ideas: Wool Turtleneck + Quilted Vest

Good Saturday morning! Today Cyndi and I are sharing two more winter outfit ideas for your fashion inspiration.

I used to be a big fan of J.Crew, but for some reason I haven’t shopped there in a few years. Suddenly, I am in love again. They have a wonderful selection of winter sweaters, and I also scored this gorgeous quilted down vest a few weeks ago.

First, let’s discuss the vest. I have a black puffy vest that I’ve had for a few years, and it’s cute, but it makes me feel a bit like the abominable snowman, and it’s almost too heavy to wear indoors. I also have the red one from Athleta that I posted a few weeks ago. It is lightweight, but it doesn’t hang nicely in the front. I often have a problem with vests and jackets sticking straight out on the sides so that I’m always trying to hold it down as I wear it. Zipping them up is my only other option, but that isn’t as flattering.

This vest, however, is perfect. It isn’t bulky at all, and it lays nicely in front. Plus the classic styling is timeless. This vest will last me for years, which is the reasoning I used to justify the price tag. Ha! It IS on sale, though, so that helps. I bought mine when it was 25% off, but now it is 30% off, bringing it down to $80. The sale ends on Monday night, if you’re interested.

This vest comes in 8 colors. Wouldn’t it would make a fantastic holiday gift? I like how it is shaped in the back, and the gold hardware is classy.

I wore skinny jeans and riding boots with this outfit because I thought the riding boots matched the preppy style of the vest, but ankle boots or UGGs would be cute too.

As for the sweater, this is the perfect wool turtleneck sweater. It has an easy, relaxed fit without being too wide and voluminous, and the exaggerated rib trim on the wrists is so pretty. Plus, I’m happy to report that it’s not scratchy at all.

This is a final sale item, and colors and sizes are selling out fast, so if you like it, grab it while you can. With the code SHOP NOW, it comes down to $55.99.

For size reference, I’m wearing a small. I ordered a medium originally, but I took it back to the store and got a small, and I’m glad I did. Not only is it more flattering in the smaller size, but that’s when I discovered this vest. Ha!

I carried a small grey crossbody because I like how the gold hardware plays off the gold in the boots and jacket, and I wanted a neutral other than black since there is so much black going on in this outfit already.

I wore gold accessories as well. The chevron necklace breaks up the front of the sweater, and the gold hoop earrings are delicate but substantial enough to not get lost in my hair.

  1. That’s a great outfit! I really love the vest and boots together. My budget doesn’t really allow for much J. Crew, but I do try to catch sales at factory when I can. Not sure how the vests compare, but I’ve had one on my wish list for awhile.

  2. The outfit is great Jo-Lynne! I love the color and details of the sweater. Have a blessed Saturday! It’s sunny and very chilly in GA, which I love.

  3. That orchid color turtleneck looks great on you. It really brightens up your complexion! Love the vest also. I have a question for you about your hair. Do you blow dry every day? It always looks so nice.

    1. You are my new best friend! Haha. I hate my hair, it is so thin. And I hate washing it and blowing it out, even though it doesn’t take very long. The days that it’s down like in this post, I washed it and blew it out. When you see it pulled back, I haven’t washed it. I do sometimes use a round brush and hair dryer to get the one side to shape nicely – the side I sleep on is always kind of wonky. 🙂 But that doesn’t take long. Again, it is thin. 🙂

      1. Well, I have super thick straight hair and have to have it thinned out all the time. If I don’t get layers it looks flat as a pancake! I just recently got a bob right above my shoulders but it still isn’t really the look I want. I hate to blow dry too! Anyway, you do a great job on your hair.

  4. Hey what size vest did you get? Did you find that it ran big or small of just right? I’ve been hunting for a black vest for a while. The outfit is so cute!

  5. I’m a huge fan of vests and wear them
all winter long in the SF Bay Area! I really like the J Crew version with the gold zipper but I tend to wear North Face vests more often. I always love vests with skinny jeans, boots and a scarf. Have a great week!
