Winter Quilted Vest Outfit

Welcome back to 25 Days of Winter Fashion! Today’s winter quilted vest outfit is more of a formula than an exact recipe. You can totally shop your closet and recreate this outfit a gazillion different ways as long as you have a few basic essentials, but if you are shopping for any of these pieces, most are on sale!

I never had a quilted vest I truly loved till last year. I tried many on over the years, and they never seemed to lay right, or they were too bulky. Then last year I discovered this quilted down vest at J.Crew. It is perfection. If you don’t have a quilted vest you love, I highly recommend this one. It comes in a myriad of classic colors. I liked mine so much I got a red one too. These definitely run big so I recommend sizing down. Mine is a small.

Winter Quilted Vest over Camel Cashmere Sweater

Underneath my vest, I wore my camel crewneck cashmere sweater. I love black and camel together, but you could put virtually any color sweater under a black vest. This sweater is also on sale right now and comes in a myriad of rich colors. It makes a great holiday gift. I ended up sizing down in this. The medium was okay, but the small is more flattering.

I wore this outfit with a necklace to work at home one day, but for these pictures I wanted to add a scarf. I apologize for continuing to style this scarf that is sold out, but it goes so well with neutrals like camel and black that I find myself going for it often. Once again, when you are wearing a neutral vest and sweater, you can put almost any plaid scarf on top. Just work with what you have in your closet, or this one is gorgeous and would be perfect with this outfit.

I actually ordered it weeks ago, and yesterday I discovered that it was marked as delivered but never arrived, so I hopped on Nordstrom’s live chat, and within minutes, they were sending me another free of charge, and they upgraded the shipping to two-day for free so it gets here in a couple of days. (I was charged for the other one, so it’s a wash.)

Have I mentioned lately how much I love shopping at Nordstrom? No, this post isn’t sponsored, but I truly never cease to be impressed with their customer service. I had a very different experience with another retailer yesterday, which made me even more aware of the stellar job Nordstrom does in this regard.

Anyway, for a different look, I tied the ends of the scarf together and tucked them under so it makes it look more like an infinity scarf.

I’ve had some questions about scarves. I prefer them as outerwear, and when I’m inside, I usually opt for a necklace. Not only do they get in the way when I’m trying to do basic tasks like loading the dishwasher, but they tend to add visual weight. If you are smaller chested, this isn’t a problem, but if you’re larger chested, you may not want that extra bulk up top. It can throw off your overall proportion and make you look top heavy.

I went with my distressed skinny jeans for this look, but I wore this vest and sweater another day with my dark wash jeans and these same burgundy suede flats, and it looked great too — just a bit dressier. My tall black boots would be great with this outfit as well. I’ll try that sometime, but I also like the way my burgundy suede flats coordinate with the scarf so I went that route. Another cute option would be leopard flats!

My suede Tory Burch flats are sold out, but they really aren’t that comfortable. I like the Minnie travel flats much better.

I kept my accessories simple — my go-to faux pearl earrings and chunky silver link bracelet, and I carried my black Moto Hobo.

  1. What to you think about women bootie in the color black? I saw some cute ones shopping on Nordstrom ‘Peera ‘ Cutout Bootie. They have gray, beige and black. i love your outfit today. You look fantastic!

    1. YES! I love those Peera cut-out booties. Black booties would be great with outfit this too. These are the Peera by Vince Camuto, for anyone following along – https://bit.ly/2fyMtLI
Several bloggers have them, and I always wish I had a pair when I see them. Here in PA, it is getting too cold for cut-out booties b/c they don’t work too well with socks, but if you’re in a warmer climate, these will be great all winter long.

  2. I love this look– my daughter calls it one of my uniforms! Good luck getting your shopping done. I did most of mine yesterday and got some great deals. I have a large family so I’ve been using a phone app to keep track of what I buy.

  3. Happy shopping. My favorite way to shop – add to cart, place order!! Can’t wait to replicate this outfit. I have all the elements you are styling, except the scarf. I sometimes feel too “fluffy” up top with a heavier scarf. I also happen to have leopard flats trimmed with dark red! I’ll be a hot stylin Grammy this week! Thank you for the inspiration & enjoy the rest of the weekend!

  4. Super cute!!! I think I just found my outfit for the day, thank you:-) The ‘Felicia’ flats really are very comfortable, I own them in nude and leopard. The red color is great!

  5. This is a favorite! It’s such a vetsatile “formula” and I really love this particular combo you chose. That camel sweater has been calling my name, and at that price it’s SO tempting! I’m anxious to pull out my vests this year too. I picked up a new one from J. Crew a couple months ago, and I love it, but I honestly think I prefer the JCF ones. I think they are a tiny bit thinner, which is better for me here. The red has haunted me, but after my BF shopping at Nordstrom yesterday, I need to put the brakes on, haha.

  6. Fabulous outfit formula! I totally agree with you about the J Crew Quilted Vest- the shape, fit, quality and warmth are amazing. I bought this last year in the large navy/ivory check pattern, and I get tons of compliments on it. I’ve asked for a black one for Christmas this year!

  7. Cute look! I may have to recreate it next winter when I’m not pregnant. I have a similar vest I got last year from Macy’s and I’m wanting to add a camel-colored sweater to my wardrobe. It’s such a classic and versatile piece. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! -Melissa

  8. Hey Jo-Lynne! Thanks for all the great info on sales this weekend. How is the fit on these jeans you have on…usual size or size up…?

Thanks and have a great weekend!

  9. Wow, I’ve been seeing sleeveless vests everywhere and now here you are styling one! It’s so cute; I want one, but my husband keeps saying I’ll never wear it (we’re in So CA and the weather is really mild.) I have so many cute jackets and coats that hardly ever get worn- boo hoo!
FYI: Those burgundy flats are really hard to find! I tried Nordstrom, Zappos, DSW, and Bloomingdales and all are sold out in my size. My husband and I are laughing about that one too as I haven’t seen a ton of people wearing burgundy flats, but apparently everyone is buying them!! LOL!
YOU must have a pretty big following my dear Jolynne!
Thanks for the cute outfit idea. 🙂

PS- I just got a pair of burgundy cordoroy skinnies from Stitch Fix. I decided to keep them because they’re so cute and fit great, but not sure how to wear them. Any ideas?

    1. That’s funny! What size do you wear for the shoes? I thought Zappo’s had all sizes.

Burgundy skinnies are fun! They look great with oatmeal, grey, black, and even navy – or any combo thereof. You can even do a lighter pink with them.

      1. Thanks Jolynne! I just bought a really cute gray fringed cardigan/wrap that I plan to wear with my new burgundy skinnies! I never thought of pairing them with oatmeal but that is a great idea…just bought a cozy oat colored sweater from Gap. It’s finally getting cold in CA! (62 degrees today!)

I wear a size 9 1/2 shoe. I ended up ordering a similar burgundy flat from DSW. What color were the Sam Edelman flats you were styling: red or wine?

        1. ahhhh… my mom wears 9 1/2 and they are hard to find. I am wearing tory burch that are sold out, but I always recommend the sam edelman instead b/c I have them in nude and leopard and they are sooo comfy, 🙂

  10. Do you wear your vest under a coat/jacket? I really want to get one for winter, but I’m not sure it makes sense if I wear a coat everywhere. I live in MN, so a winter coat is a must!

    1. You can if it’s a big coat. 🙂 Here in PA, I usually don’t, but I lived for a few years in Massachusetts (and I’ve been to MN in the winter) so I would definitely want a coat over it in those temps.

  11. This is such a cute outfit and one I can easily replicate! Yay! Thanks for explaining everything so well! Talbots has some great vests this year too.

  12. Does the small allow you to zip the vest easily? The vest appears long enough…is it? I am wanting to order it in a navy! 🙂
