Spring Work Wear Outfit: Jungle Green Skinny Ankle Pants

Well, we’re in the home stretch! It’s the last week of March. Today I have a work wear look for you featuring these bi-stretch skinny ankle pants from Gap.

Normally I’m not a fan of ankle length pants because I feel like they make me look frumpy, but these are slim enough with enough stretch to make them fit more like skinny jeans than trousers, and they seem to work for me. If you are a similar build, you may like them too.

For size reference, I’m wearing the 6. They were snug at first, but they do stretch out as you wear them. I also ordered the 8, and I prefer the fit of the size 6. Also, today is the last day of the Gap Friends & Family Sale! With 40% off, these pants end up being only $31.48. For that price, you might as well get two pairs! (I also got the Brindle and the Navy Diamond print.)

SALE ALERT >> 40% off everything online at GAP.com + free shipping with code FFSALE! Ends 3/27. PLUS earn $25 in GAPCASH for every $50 you spend through 5/9.

You can dress these pants up or down, but I wanted to create a work wear look so I topped them off with a silky blush shell and my white collarless blazer.

Here’s a better look at this top. For size reference, I’m wearing the small. I really like how the blush color is more saturated than some, and the scallop detail is cute. When it gets warmer, I can wear it alone, but for now, it works well under a blazer or jean jacket.

Blush Scallop Front Top with Jungle Green Ankle Skinny Pants

I usually go for a scoop or v-shaped neckline, which is more flattering for my body type, but this works okay, especially with a structured blazer over top. It is a little sheer, so you may prefer to wear a cami underneath, although I did not.

This white crepe blazer works really well with this color palette, and I like how the collarless design allows you to see the scallop detail on the top. I have a medium in the jacket.

This jacket does have light shoulder pads, which it needs for proper structure. In a blazer, the shoulder area is the only part you can’t easily alter, so you always want the shoulders to fit right, then most anything else can be fixed. Visually, the shoulder seam of a blazer should hit right about where your own shoulder ends. If jacket does not reach the end of your shoulder, it’s too small, and if it goes too far over your shoulder, it is too big.

I did the lean-against-the-wall trick to determine that this jacket is the right size and fits well in the shoulders. It seemed to fit right, but in these pictures, it looks a tad large to my eyes. It’s comfortable to move around in, though, and I don’t think I could wear a small. You’ll have to let me know what you think.

BLAZER FIT TIP >> When wearing a blazer, with your arms relaxed at your sides, slowly lean your shoulder into a wall. As you lean in against the wall, your shoulder and the end of the shoulder pad should hit the wall at the same time. If the shoulder pad touches first, then the shoulders are too large. If your shoulder touches first well before the shoulder pad, then the shoulders are too small for you.

Also, I totally forgot to put on jewelry before leaving the house to shoot this look. I would have added my favorite silver link bracelet and my two-tone watch to finish off this look. I just so happened to sleep in my triad hoops the night before, so fortunately I at least had earrings on!

My bag is old, but I linked to a similar color on Amazon. Also, the kate spade new york mylie hobo in the grey is on sale for $208 at Shopbop. I really like the combination of grey with gold hardware.

I wore neutral suede ankle strap sandals, but you could certainly wear pumps if your work place requires closed toe shoes. I like a nude shoe with this look. It helps elongate the legs and doesn’t distract from the colors in the outfit, but another option would be white pumps. They could be really sharp with this.

Although I don’t work in a professional office environment, I can see myself wearing this outfit to church or out to lunch with friends. I really like the price point on these pants, and they come in a ton of colors as well as a few prints as well.

  1. Okay, Jo-Lynne…I totally had to laugh when you commented that you don’t like ankle pants. Either does my mom (the 70’s model on my blog). In fact, she just got a pair at a thrift store and lengthened them so they would be longer!! But I keep trying to change her mind because they are great for showing off the cute ankle strap shoes!! I know part of it is the teasing that used to happen when we wore “floods”—ha ha!!
And I will tell you I love this color combo!! Pink & green reminds me of my high school days, and I always love it!!

  2. Thanks for this post. I am going to see if I can make my Talbot’s ankle pants work. I believe new shoes are the answer. HA HA.
Your work is so helpful to me!!! Julie L

  3. I love Gap’s bi-stretch pants. They’re my go-to when I want color and something other than jeans. I don’t have them in the ankle length, so I may have to try a pair. Happy Monday!

  4. Your post was perfectly timed. I have been looking for a brighter pink pair of pants and Gap has them in this style.
My spring wardrobe is almost complete thanks to your help.

  5. Love this entire look! I’ve always loved pink and green together. My college roommate and I were obsessed with pink and green! We wore it, and even decorated our dorm room in pink and green! Ha! You look so lovely as always!

  6. Awesome – I actually wore this exact combo (Olive and blush) to work the other day and got a ton of compliments. Since it is still a little brisk here, I wore olive ankle boots with my outfit.

  7. Good advice to size down. They stretch out and sag, so they should fit snug when you first put them on.
I love blush with khaki green. I bought a blush top and pink pants ( not to be worn together ) this year. Surprised myself!
I don’t think your jacket is too big. it fits your shoulders perfectly. It might just be a bit of a relaxed fit.

  8. The stores are full of skinny pants this spring, they’re everywhere you look, but even though I don’t consider myself to be overweight (5’6′, 135 lbs) , I just can’t wear them . Sometimes I can’t get them up past my knees-oy! Super frustrating. Does anyone else struggle with this?

  9. Love this work. I always look for capri length pants for work during the Spring and Summer because it gets SO hot! Thanks for the color ideas.

  10. Hi Jo Lynne:
I absolutely love your blog! I discovered it about a month ago and I’ve been following closely. I have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear, but this is changing as I conduct the ruthless closet purge that you recommended. I feel better already, and I’m only about a third of the way thru. I plan to take the Adore Your Wardrobe course when registration re-opens. I liked this outfit so much that I purchased the pants in the two colors you chose — brindle and jungle green I believe. I already have a blush shirt that will look nice with the green pants, but I’m starting to feel overwhelmed as I’m not sure what else to wear with the two pants. And I’ve made many purchases based on ideas from your posts. Although I’ve been feeling a lot more pulled together in my look lately, I’m starting to get confused about what to buy and what to keep. Perhaps this is a good time to wait for the ADW course before I do anymore damage?

    1. Hi Kristal. I just found your comment in spam, so sorry about that! So yeah, those colors are hard sometimes. I like to pair them with pinks, oranges, reds, those types of colors. Even pastel pink is pretty with them. And of course, black looks good with both brindle and jungle. Registration for the next AYW class starts May 15, so it’s almost here! 🙂 https://bit.ly/AYW2017
