Yet Another Reason to Covet a Keurig

It’s no secret, my favorite indulgence is a nice, fresh, strong mug of coffee — cream, no sugar, thanks. But in the summer heat, there are times that the last thing I need is a steamy hot beverage elevating my body temperature even more.

I often order iced coffee in the summertime when I’m out and about, but I’ve found that at home, it’s just too tedious to make. You have to brew a special pot that is stronger than the ordinary coffee you make for breakfast. Then you have to wait for it to refrigerate. By the time it’s ready to pour over ice, you’re out of the mood. I’m not much of a planner, so I never think to prepare the coffee earlier in the day. When I’m in the mood for an iced coffee, I want it NOW.

Enter the Brew Over Ice K-Cup® portion packs for Keurig.

Keurig has created some of their most popular coffee (and tea) flavors in a stronger formulation for use as iced beverages. They even sell this cute Iced Beverage Tumbler to hold your favorite iced drink creation.

I was eager to try it so I took my Keurig out of the box, set it up, and set it to brewing immediately. You do have to use plenty of ice because the coffee that it produces is hot and much of it will melt, but not to worry — they have formulated the coffees to be strong enough to withstand the watering down that occurs.

Also, if you don’t yet have a Keurig and you plan on making a lot of iced drinks, I’d recommend getting one of the full sized ones — perhaps the Keurig B60 or the B-70. The Keurig Mini Plus is adorable, but it doesn’t accomodate the height of the Brew Over Ice tumbler so I had to brew a mug of coffee and pour that over into the tumbler. But whatever. It still works.

I tried the French Vanilla iced coffee yesterday. I guess I didn’t use nearly enough ice because it melted immediately. Still, it was a yummy treat, even though it didn’t stay quite as cold as I like.

Today I tried the Green Mountain Nantucket Blend Iced Coffee, with much better results. First off, I made sure I filled the tumbler to the top with ice.

When I re-read the directions, I realized that yesterday I put more water in than I should have. It says to make a 6 or 8 oz cup of coffee, and I think I made a 10-oz. So today I put only 6 oz of water in. That did the trick because . . . Oh. My. Word. PERFECTION.

This is officially my new summer drink. Anyone wanna join me for an iced coffee?

If I have any complaints about the system, it is that they don’t have very many flavors — just the two coffee flavors at the moment. May I humbly recommend a chocolate variety? Something like the iced mocha I get at Starbucks. I’d buy a lifetime supply of those. I’m sure they’ll add more if these take off, which I’m sure they will, because they are delicious and convenient. What more could you want?

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to buy more Brew Over Ice K-Cups…

Disclosure: I received a Keurig Mini Plus coffee brewer and samples of Brew Over Ice coffee and tea K-Cups to facilitate this review. All opinions and caffeine headaches are my own.

  1. I love coffee in all its forms too. A trick I learned last summer was if I had any coffee left over from breakfast (not always likely, but it happened sometimes) I poured it into ice cube trays and allowed them to freeze. Then when I made iced coffee I could use regular coffee over these cubes and it didn’t dilute the flavor at all AND kept it cold.

I would like to get a cold beverage glass like that, though. 🙂

  2. I love my Keurig. My hubby bought me the mack daddy for Christmas last year. I just tried the iced tea with lemonade K-cup today. I think I did the same thing you did and used the wrong water setting. I’ll have to try again. I can tell it has potential. Like you, when it’s hot outside the last thing I want is a hot beverage.
I’m glad you reviewed these because I’ve been wondering how they were!

  3. I have a brewer of the same type but different brand, quite convinient to make these by the cup. The only complaint I have is that there aren’t many varieties of decaf drinks

  4. If it says anything to you, I always bring our Keurig on vacation with us. I don’t care how jam-packed our van is…and we have 7 kids plus all of our stuff to take on vacation…. I will hold the thing in my lap for the entire trip to the beach if I have to in order to have a decent cup of coffee. It always comes with us like a faithful servant that we can’t live without…sad–yes, am I spoiled–yes, Do I care??–No

The Donut Shop (or is it Donut House?) Brand makes some good ones…the chocolate one may not be iced…in fact I think I brewed two strong cups for my iced coffee last summer but it was gooooodddd!!!!

Just read Kellly the Kitchen Kop’s post on hot plastics and coffee, though…:( Love her, but I had to stop reading and delete it from my mind. Keurig and anti-perspirant will be the last to go in my whole-foods natural living journey.

    1. Yep. I’m with ya, sistah!

(I read that post too. Nananananahh! I can’t HEAR you, Kelly!!!)

  5. Oooh, this is good timing. I bought the iced vanilla K-cups last week. I haven’t used them yet. I thought about it too much – wondered if it would be watery. Now that you played the guinea pig I will give it a go!

  6. I have a Keurig coffeemaker and love it! I get my k-cups at Sam’s Club since it’s cheaper. But I didn’t realize they had an iced tea maker too. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing about this.

    Blessings,
    Debbie

    1. Yeah, you use the same machine – but there are iced tea K-cups that go in and you just use it like the coffee ones as I described – over ice in a glass rather than into a mug.

  7. I heard recently that starbucks will have k-cups in the fall! Hoping what I heard is true, this will make my hubby very happy!!

  8. I am not a coffee drinker……but I LOVE the salmon/coral shirt and tank you are wearing…..where did you find that?

    1. Isn’t that cute!? I picked it up (and the lace trimmed tank underneath) at Old Navy last week!

  9. Hello Ladies!

I don’t mean to be a downer, but aren’t you the least bit concerned about the fact that your coffee is being brewed in plastic packets???? It just seems that there are so many other ways to brew coffee for hot or iced options that will not put plastic residue into your system. Have you tried a French press? Coffee can be brewed as strongly (or weakly) as you like and poured over ice (if you like). AND since you can use ANY flavor/brand of coffee, your flavor options are endless. Just a thought…

    1. Actually, Colleen, I have given thought to this, and you make a valid point. I have a french press, but it’s such a pain. I can never seem to get the right strength. And it doesn’t hold much, and the last mug is always gritty. Blah.

I have thought about getting a percolator. Kelly wrote about hers here: https://kellythekitchenkop.com/2011/05/a-cup-of-coffee-without-plastic-toxins-please.html

My mom gets good results with a percolator that she got as a wedding gift over 40 years ago LOL!!

You definitely have a point, but I still use the microwave (not with plastic, mind you) and aluminum (not in the microwave, lol) and get my nails done — my point is that there are so many areas of my life that I could clean up, but there is only so much time in the day, and these K-cups are awfully fun and convenient. 🙂

  10. You convinced me I need to try these k-cups. I’ve been making my regular k-cups into iced-coffee all week. But now I’m inspired to try. (Of course, you really didn’t have to twist my arm too far.)

  11. I just found your blog and I loved this post! My husband just bought me a Keurig for Valentine’s Day and I was wondering if the iced kcups were any good. You’ve now sold me on having to try them!

  12. On the mini plus,, you can remove the little drip tray thingy from the bottom of the brewer to fit a taller cup. 😉

  13. I’m a little late to this party, but might I suggest simply adding Hershey’s Syrup to your iced coffee to make a mocha version? I just started making mocha iced coffee just a couple days ago and its fantastic with just about any extra bold kcup and chocolate syrup. yum! 🙂
