Beat the Summer Heat In Style

As outdoor temperatures are rising, it gets more challenging to look polished and put together while still being cool and comfortable. That’s when I rely on simple but well-tailored pieces in breathable fabrics. The simpler the outfit, the more important quality and fit become, and that is where Frank & Eileen really shines.

Rory Maxi Shirtdress in Famous Denim, Black (S) c/o

One of the easiest ways to look chic while staying cool in the summertime is with a midi or maxi dress. When I think of a summer maxi dress, I usually think of something flowy and floral, but they don’t always feel authentic to my personal style. That’s why I was thrilled to try this tailored shirtdress from Frank & Eileen.

The Rory Maxi Shirtdress has a long, lean silhouette that is elongating and so elegant. It also has the iconic Frank & Eileen bust flattering button placement with chest pocket and easy-to-roll sleeves, as well as the hand-distressed shirttail hem that identifies their button-up shirts.

I’m wearing their hand-dyed Famous Denim, 100% Italian Cotton in the black, which I think is so chic; but it also comes white, rose, rust, and three shades of blue. This fabric doesn’t feel heavy at all, which I credit to being 100% cotton, but it also comes in several linen options for those who prefer a lighter weight fabric.

This dress also comes in a shorter version, the Mary Classic Shirtdress. This is also the denim, which I selected because it’s pretty much a 4-season dress. It also comes in linen, but I can wear this denim version in the Vintage Stonewashed Indigo with sandals and sneakers this summer, and then with boots and even over pants this fall.

I love how the hem is slightly longer in the back than in the front, and a little higher on the sides. This shirtdress could also double as a swimsuit coverup. For size reference, I’m wearing a small in both dresses.

If you prefer a traditional button-up shirt, the Eileen Relaxed Button-Up Shirt in Famous Denim Vintage Stonewashed Indigo is the same fabric as the dress, but in a classic denim shirt. I have a white one in the Classic Linen, and I like it so much, I decided to add this denim one to my closet.

I like how this shirt is shaped like a circle, with rounded shoulders and no back pleat, and it’s cut generously throughout for that effortlessly chic California vibe. Despite the generous fit, I ordered the medium, and I’m glad I did. I need the room in the shoulders and through the bust.

I styled it here with the Derry Illusion Pull-On Pants in Antique White. Admittedly, this outfit is a bit warm for the heat wave we’ve been having, but it’s perfect for milder summer weather, and I can see wearing it a lot in spring and fall. Plus, I spend so much in air conditioning, I sometimes liking having the better part of my arms and legs covered.

These pants have a comfy pull-on style, but they still looks like jeans! Brilliant. I’ve never been so comfortable in jeans before. They have a 10.25″ front rise and a 27.5” inseam with a 13″ leg opening for a slim, straight fit in a cropped length.

They’re designed with a contoured waistband that sits just below your natural waist, and they hold their shape beautifully throughout the day.

Finally, if you have travel plans this summer, the Malibu Travel Set is the perfect chic set for car trips, air travel, mornings or evenings at the beach, or hanging out a your hotel/Airbnb.

The Audrey Capelet has elbow-length sleeves with a rolled funnel neck, hand-cut raw hem, and signature capelet side slits. It pairs perfectly with the Catherine Favorite Sweatpant. You can buy these pieces separately, or together.

The Catherine Sweatpants feature a cropped hand-cut raw hem and drawstring waistband, and they were intentionally designed with no pockets for a smooth and seamless appearance.

Frank & Eileen’s 100% Cotton Triple Fleece fabric is deceivingly comfortable in the summer heat. It isn’t super thin, but it’s lightweight and breathable, and the relaxed fit keeps these pieces breezy and cool.

These are definitely investment pieces, but if you enjoy selectively filling your closet with high quality items that are both functional and beautiful, I hope this post was helpful for your wardrobe-building needs. Frank & Eileen clothing makes lovely gifts, too!

  1. Love the Frank and Eileen.
How do you find their sizing, as in what size have you purchased in the travel set? Seems to be a thin line between fitted and schlumpy.
    Thanks,
    -Janet

  2. Love F&E! I think my favorite item (and I’m shocked I’m saying this!) are the pleated washed linen shorts! I have 3 pair! Equally as great is my Patrick pop over tee in white. That gets so much wear; it’s so polished!

  3. I love nothing better than a chambray/denim top over white bottoms in the warm weather! I have purchased only one item from F&E so far, a cotton button-up shirt. It’s lovely and the backstory of this company is inspiring. Even their packaging was top notch! Looks like you enjoyed your vacation in DE!

  4. Although I don’t mind/can like a little fraying on jeans ( which can occur naturally) I think on the shirtdresses it looks a little contrived and unnecessary. Just my opinion but I think the shirtdresses would look better without it.

  5. I like the black dress. I ordered the white wide leg jeans from Gap factory from your email link. I upped a size since they are white. I’m recovering from surgery and still have the stomach bloat and don’t want anything too tight. Would you say they are true to size? Some reviews said they run small and others big. I got them at a fantastic price plus they had sent a $10 coupon.

      1. I hope they work out too. I’m glad I went with the bigger size. I’ve been using your links when I order.

  6. Love it all but too expensive for me. I’m glad they gave you pieces to style. Great benefit of your job. Love the black midi dress and the short denim one. Both look great on you.

  7. I am 69 and looking for a nice white denim shirt. I am 5’3″ and around 133 lbs. I usually wear a size 8. All of the skirts I found are too sheer, showing the pockets or are too tight. A line better for me than pencil skirt. Also my husband does not like frayed hems. Any direction you would suggest? I like Talbots, Chicos (their plainer stuff), Quince and Rip Hawaii skirts (you should try them, they are great, I have 5). Love your blog and style!

  8. Do you have any recommendations for outfits comparable to the Malibu travel set that aren’t quite such an…investment? 😅 That outfit is totally my vibe but not at all within the realm of financial possibility. Doesn’t have to be cheap Amazon stuff but maybe a middle of the road alternative? Looking for brand recommendations. Thanks!

  9. I love my Mary Classic in the distressed vintage wash. I ordered the large, but I think I could have sized down (which I did when I ordered the Mary in Light Blue with Red Plaid and it fits great). Both are chic, comfortable and exactly my style. Even though they are pricey, I feel I’ll wear them for years to come.
