What I Wore Lately: Summer on Repeat

Happy Wednesday, it’s time for another edition of What I Wore Lately! The past couple of weeks have included everything from medical appointments and work-from-home days to a wedding, church, and a shopping trip with one of my girls.

There are definitely some repeat offenders in this roundup, but that’s real life, especially this time of year. Here’s a look at what I’ve been wearing lately. As usual, I’ll include links and sizing under each photo.

SIZING NOTES: I’m 5’5″ and typically wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, a 29–30 in jeans and pants, and a size 8.5 shoe. I often fall between sizes, so fit notes matter. Gifted items are marked c/o; everything else was purchased by me.

Two Weeks of Everyday Summer Outfits

I had an appointment for my first DEXA scan a couple of weeks ago. #ThisIs53

They instructed me to wear comfortable clothes, so I grabbed my Ruti pants and paired them with my new Quince leather flip-flops for a modern, laid-back look. I topped it off with my favorite Athleta linen tank in a soft green shade. Apparently, I still can’t resist a black-and-olive combination.

I brought along a denim jacket in case the waiting room was chilly, and I grabbed my old black Gucci Soho Disco as I headed out the door. I kind of forget about this bag, but it was one of my very first luxury handbag purchases and is still a favorite, even though it’s a little dated now. It’s such a convenient style and still one of my go-to bags for travel. I’ve definitely gotten my money’s worth out of this one!

For a hair appointment the next afternoon, I paired these super-soft wide-leg jeans, which have a fun tie-waist detail, with this simple smocked tank. Both are on sale right now, by the way. (Use code FOURTH for 40% off at Splendid.)

Madewell’s Airy Denim is a lightweight cotton/TENCEL™ blend, which makes these jeans much softer and lighter than traditional denim. They drape beautifully and are surprisingly comfortable, even on warmer days.

Since they’re a smidge too long for me to wear with flats, I added my jelly thong sandals with the kitten heel for a little extra height.

The next day, I was back in comfy clothes for a visit to my chiropractor. I’ve worn some version of this outfit four or five times over the past couple of weeks. It’s just the easiest thing to throw on and go when I need to be comfortable, and it’s modest enough for all the contorting that happens at the chiropractor’s office. (He’s been working on my hip recently.)

Also, this linen-blend muscle tank is part of the Athleta Semi-Annual Sale. It’s super lightweight and easy to throw on with shorts or pants for workouts or casual everyday looks, and it comes in tons of colors. I already have it in Black and Cacti, but that Siren color is calling my name!

I pulled on this fun outfit to meet friends for a casual weeknight dinner. I like the combination of the striped sweater tank, wide-leg jeans (on sale!), and jelly flip-flops with the gold ball hardware. It’s a fun mix of casual and dressy, with modern silhouettes.

I added a Jane Win pendant, a triple-row beaded bracelet, and finished the look with simple hoops. The espresso brown woven bag ties in with the sandals and adds a little texture to the outfit.

The girls and I went and got pedicures on a Saturday afternoon, which was fun. It was a hot day, so I pulled on a pair of light wash denim shorts and this pink top from last year. I wore the jelly flip-flops again and carried the same woven brown bag as the day before, and I accessorized with some simple gold jewelry.

The next day, I had nursery duty at church, so I kept it casual with blue jeans, but I added a ribbed button-up sweater tank, some fun embellished flip-flops, and a coordinating beaded bracelet.

Okay, so how fun is this striped handwoven raffia bag with the circular handle? I love the coastal vibes.

I wore this casual look after a photo shoot with Alison the next day, and I believe I did some try-ons when I got home, which is how I ended up holding the bag. Paired with the embroidered-trim red tank and blue jeans (or shorts), it would make such a fun, festive Fourth of July outfit.

I spent the next day at home, so I wore the Ruti pants and my trusty Athleta linen tank once again.

Another day last week, I started out in this tank top and shorts.

I changed to go to the mall with Becca later that afternoon to find her a wedding guest dress. Her search was much shorter than mine, but about as confusing. She came home with three options from Altar’d State, and we’re going to return the two she didn’t wear.

Funny story: We got to the register, and one of the dresses rang up for $5.97! I double-checked to make sure that was right, and I guess it was an older style that had been returned. (It was the only one in the store, and I couldn’t find it online.) Happily, that’s the dress she ended up choosing! How often does that happen?

Sadly, I can’t provide a link, but here she is wearing it. Caroline’s dress is from last year, but there are still a few sizes available, so I linked it below.

Anyway, I changed into pants because I’m always cold in the mall, and I swapped my sandals for a more comfortable pair for walking.

By the way, these pants are on sale at Shopbop in the raw hem version right now. Use code PRIME25 at checkout.

It was back to my Ruti pants and Quince leather flip flops the next day to work from home after my morning workout. I just kept on the pink tank I had worn to the gym.

Last Friday was the much-anticipated wedding I’ve been talking about. We had a great time, and I ultimately decided on this indigo-blue V-neck sheath dress with the ruched bodice.

I accessorized with a delicate layered pearl-and-gold necklace, a chunky pearl and crystal bracelet, and double hoop earrings. Altogether, I felt it was dressy enough for the festive occasion while still being appropriate for a daytime event.

I carried an elegant YSL chain-strap crossbody bag and wore an older pair of Stuart Weitzman heels in a coordinating taupe patent that I absolutely love. They have such a gorgeous heel, and the strap design is super flattering while still providing enough stability to walk and dance comfortably.

Sadly, my old knees can no longer tolerate heels over 3 inches. (These are 85mm, or about 3.3 inches.) My feet felt perfectly fine all night—no blisters, no soreness, nothing—but my knees apparently took one for the team. They’ve been stiff and swollen ever since, although they’re slowly getting better.

The next day, it was back to life, back to reality…

After my morning Pilates class, I changed into the striped sweater tank with dark blue linen wide-leg pants to pick my dad up at the airport and run a few errands together. I still wish these pants didn’t have the large utility pockets, but I think they’re much more noticeable in photos than they are in real life. Paul assured me they look fine.

VESTIRSI sent me this gorgeous Sloan Tan Resort Crossbody Clutch. I’d been eyeing their summer raffia collection, so I was thrilled when they offered to send me a piece. It’s such a cool design and surprisingly spacious inside for a relatively small bag. I love the combination of cognac leather and tan raffia for summer.

For church on Father’s Day, I wore this old favorite Tommy Bahama linen-blend sheath dress. I always feel like it’s too casual for a heel, but maybe that’s silly? I decided to go with these black strappy flats and keep things comfortable.

I accessorized with a few silver pieces, and I carried a white woven crossbody. I like how it coordinates with the contrast stitching in the dress and keeps the look light and summery.

Monday was another WFH day, although I took my dad back to the airport mid-morning. And you probably saw this coming… I wore the Ruti pants again!

This time I paired them with a blue scoop-neck muscle tank that recently arrived from Anthro and the same Madewell flip-flops as the day before. They’re surprisingly comfortable, and I love the contrast of the white thong straps against the black footbed.

And yesterday, I wore my Vuori straight-leg pants and Athleta tank again! I just had a chiropractor appointment, and otherwise I was at home all day.

By the way, I’m loving my new APL TechLoom Dream Sneakers. They’re super soft, lightweight, supportive, and cushioned. And even though they’re a bit clunkier than what I’m used to, I think they look kind of cool, too.

So that’s a wrap for this edition of What I Wore Lately! The dog days of summer are setting in, so the next few weeks will likely be pretty casual.

I’ll still be trying to level things up and put fun outfits together, though. It’s good practice, even when we don’t have anywhere “important” to go.

What have you been living in lately? I’d love to hear what’s been on repeat in your closet this summer.

  1. I notice you have 2 pairs of the Ruti pants, 1 in a size 8 and 1 in a size 10. I am curious how you think they fit? I can be inbetween sizes lately and want comfortable pants for an over seas trip in October. Thank you.

    1. Yeah, so I bought the black in an 8 first. I thought they fit fine and wore them to St. Lucia. But when I put them on to fly home, they felt too snug in the waist and were pulling a bit across the back. After I got home, I tried them a couple more times, and they still felt snug, so when I ordered the Walnut color, I went with the 10.

Since then, I’ve lost a few pounds, and now the 8 fits again, lol! So if you’re between sizes and want to ensure a comfortable fit, I’d probably recommend sizing up. Hope that helps!

      1. thank you. I was going to size up. I don’t like anything tight especially for a long Airline trip.

  2. Beautiful dress for the wedding, nice choice! Lately, I’ve been trying to style a different one of my sleeveless work tops each day, with no repeats until I’ve gone through them all. Just to see what I like best, what I gravitate toward the most, which ones were more challenging to style, etc. I guess you could call it a wardrobe experiment. 😉

  3. Very nice family photo. When I saw your shoes I thought no wonder her knees hurt. They look like they are 5 inches high. Did you actually dance in those shoes?

    1. Yeah, it is no wonder at all, lol. The only wonder is why they didn’t bother my ankles. They’re just over 3″, but I haven’t worn much over 2.5″ in years. I gave away all my 4″ heels, but I do wear these occasionally. They don’t hurt my feet at all, but the pitch is definitely hard on the knees.

  4. I love the Ruti pants but the price makes them not an option. I’ve tried some dupes from Amazon with no luck. Any other suggestions for dupes?

  5. I have been wearing short-sleeve cotton blouses when it’s warm. I picked up a a couple this spring that are very lightweight and moderately alluring, in that they’re both white, so a bit sheer, and one has cut-outs along the side. I wear a bralette under that one. I have styles ranging from pop-over to button-through that are great for hot days when you want to feel cool outside but have some coverage indoors.

  6. I have the pink Dessa top too and love it. I love the structure but it’s not too loose. I also have the yellow sweater tank from Sanctuary. Wore it for our sons’ graduation party (one graduated HS, the other graduated college) with brown Paige Olivia shorts. It was a really cute outfit! I also think the Tommy Bahama dress can definitely take heels. I’d probably wear high heel espadrilles as it’s a little more casual but heels would work too. In fact, I rarely wear dresses w/o some kind of heel. It makes me feel (if not look!) slimmer. Sorry to hear about your knees, I’ve never heard of sore knees from wearing heels but I can understand why. I’m still rocking the 3″ heels but usually only if I’m not going to be on my feet the entire time.

    1. Love the idea of pairing the yellow with brown.

And I also love the Dessa top – such a nice shape. I’ll try the TB dress with an espadrille.

  7. Hi – I have a fall wedding in September. Would the navy dress work for that with taupe shoes?

  8. Even 2 inch heels for me are a no–so tough on the knees. I looked into the Anthropologie Scoop-Neck Muscle Tank–but it shows a more muted blue then the one you are wearing?

  9. Ok…I’ve been eyeying the Ruti pants & they r pricey, but I had a discount code, so I ordered them after seeing this post. They arrived yesterday. I love them on you, but I just can’t warm up to that style on myself. My husband & I had such a laugh! I do have a pair of barrel pants from kut, but these were just clownish on me!! 😂😂🤡. I’m glad to send them back & recoup the $$$. The anthro tank is perfect & I bought it in multiple colors. Sorry Ruti, I tried. Physically, they felt super comfy, but they were mentally uncomfortable. 😉
