What I Wore Lately

Happy Wednesday! It’s time for another edition of What I Wore Lately, including the 4th of July, my birthday dinner, a bunch of errands and work-from-home days, and the first half of our Maine vacation.

I almost saved the vacation outfits for the next post, but with the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale kicking off next week, I figured I’d better share as many summer looks as I can before we all start thinking about fall.

Sizing Notes: My sizes have started to shift recently. I still wear a small or medium in tops and dresses, and a 29 or 30 in jeans and pants, although I can wear a 29 in most styles now. For height reference, I’m 5’5″. Gifted items are marked c/o; everything else was purchased by me.

Two Weeks of Everyday Summer Outfits

Kicking things off, I got dressed head-to-toe for a Zoom call with a brand. I know they could only see me from the waist up, but I always feel more professional when I’m fully dressed.

I wore this textured yellow button-up tank with light wash jeans, my favorite brown jelly sandals, and silver accessories.

I went for a walk the next day to break in my new APL sneakers, and I decided to give the crew sock trend a try. Let’s just say… That’s a no for me, dawg. I’ll be staying in the no-show sock club for now.

The sneakers, though, are a total win. They’re incredibly comfortable and supportive, and I think they look great, too.

Once I got showered and ready for the day, I threw on this red smocked tank with my twisted outseam Anessa jeans and Reef flip-flops to run a few errands. Looking back, I’m not sure why I didn’t add a bracelet or two. I almost always do.

These jeans are on sale, by the way! They’re one of my favorite pairs for summer.

That evening, I met a friend for happy hour before heading to a local restaurant and live music venue to see my daughter’s friends’ band perform. I kept the same jeans but swapped the tank for this fun utility vest with silver zipper details.

I also switched to wedge sandals in a similar color and added a hammered metal bracelet and a few more silver accessories. The brown East-West shoulder bag added just the right amount of contrast, and although it’s hard to see here, the color ties in with the footbed of the sandals.

This was a work-from-home day, so I kept things casual with jean shorts, a ribbed henley tank, and flip-flops. By the way, these braided thong sandals are on sale right now!

I threw on these Frank & Eileen jeans and this brown PAIGE sweater, both from last year, to go to my biweekly mani-pedi last week. I love these two pieces together, and I’m so happy these jeans fit again! They’re super soft and lightweight, and the trouser-inspired styling keeps the whole look polished.

I added a pair of chunky bangles for fun and wore my jelly flip-flops to bookend the look. I like how the taupe crossbody adds a little contrast while still complementing the colors in the outfit.

We had dinner plans with friends that night, so I went with one of my favorite tried-and-true summer date night outfit formulas: white jeans and a black sweater. To that, I added gold espadrille wedge sandals and a raffia shoulder bag with gold chain straps to keep it light and summery.

I finished the look with a fun little red necklace set, a bold gold beaded bracelet, and chunky hoop earrings.

The next day, I went to the mall by myself to pick up a few things and wandered around some of my favorite stores. I pulled together this summery look with a pink top and my PAIGE Anessa jeans. (My exact wash is from last year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, and they were discontinued, but this pair is 30% off at Anthro!)

For accessories, I wore a pair of white and gold drop earrings I picked up in St. Lucia, a fun bangle set in shades of pink and brown, and a beaded necklace in complementary tones layered with a gold link necklace. And once again, I wore my jelly flip-flops, but this time I carried my brown zippered bucket bag to coordinate.

I pulled out these black linen pants to wear to church the next day. After trying a few different options, I ended up pairing them with this Michael Stars Nara Mock Neck top. It’s an old favorite that’s probably in its third season now. I love the silhouette, and the length is perfect for a front tuck because it’s not too long in the back. It’s also a brighter, more vibrant green than the similar Michael Stars Jinny Power Shoulder Top I picked up at EVEREVE earlier this season.

(I bought the Jinny thinking it might replace this top, but after wearing them both, I still prefer the Nara. The brighter green and slightly shorter length are more flattering on me, and the mock neck gives it a little something extra, even if the crewneck is a bit more versatile. I also have the Jinny in black, which I plan to keep, but I think it may be time to pass along the olive one.)

I added a thin black belt with gold hardware to anchor the look, so I kept the accessories simple: a bold gold cuff bracelet and a pair of chunky gold hoop earrings. I finished it off with black kitten-heel sandals and a black woven bag to keep everything clean and streamlined.

The color palette may seem a bit heavy for this time of year, but it was a dreary day, so it felt appropriate. Besides, I love wearing olive with black year-round.

The following Monday was a casual day of errands and working from home. I threw on my favorite jean shorts once again, this time with a washed black muscle tank. I love the boxy silhouette and cropped length. I did size up to a large, though, for a more relaxed fit.

My crystal-embellished jelly thong flip-flops kept the outfit casual but fun, while the brown-and-black woven bag added a nice touch of pattern and texture.

The next night was my birthday dinner with the family, and I debated a few different dress options. I really wanted to wear the J.Crew seamed linen dress, but the small was too snug and the medium was too big. I tried them both on one more time and confirmed that neither would work without alterations.

Next, I tried on the LOFT scalloped mini dress, but it felt a little too beachy for where we were having dinner. I definitely plan to pack this outfit for the shore later this month!

I ended up wearing the mesh palm print dress that I bought for St. Lucia. It wasn’t even on my radar for this occasion, but after exhausting all my other options, I spotted it hanging in my closet and decided to give it a try. As soon as I put it on, it felt like the right choice.

I paired it with these new strappy, minimalist sandals I picked up for exactly this type of occasion. Then I added a stack of black and gold stretch bracelets, my Jane Win Grace coin pendant layered with a link necklace, and a pair of bold hoop earrings.

I also brought along a black wool-silk Burberry scarf I purchased in London last fall to throw over my shoulders if it got chilly. I ended up needing it later that evening and wore it home. It was the perfect lightweight layer and worked beautifully with the dress.

I get asked all the time what to wear over dresses, and I really think every woman should own a couple of lightweight scarves like this in versatile neutral colors. I just found a similar one that’s included in this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I have a couple of these, and they’re perfect for weddings and other special events when you don’t want to throw a jacket or cardigan over your dress.

The next day, I helped a friend move into her new place, so I kept it casual in jean shorts, a graphic tee, and sneakers.

Afterward, I changed into linen pants and a sweater tank for a little birthday celebration at a friend’s house.

I spent most of the next day at home. It was hot and humid, so I went for shorts, a tank top, and flip-flops.

The next day was more of the same, although I did carve out an hour to spend some time in the pool. Afterward, I threw on this outfit to share on Instagram Stories as a potential Fourth of July look.

For the Fourth, I ended up wearing the same white shorts, but with the red smocked tank instead of the blue scoop-neck top. It was a very hot day, and the tank just made more sense. I added neutral sandals with a comfort footbed because I knew I’d be on my feet all day and night.

I accessorized with two pieces from the Madewell Three-Pack Puka Shell Necklace Set, a J.Crew resin bangle set, and lightweight gold hoops. These cord necklaces are having a bit of a moment right now, and I’m really enjoying the trend for a change!

I wore this Splendid mini dress to church on Sunday. It was another hot day, and this dress kept me cool and comfortable.

Here’s a closer look at my shiny silver sculptural hoop earrings and this fun J.Crew shell charm necklace.

After church, I did some try-ons and ended up keeping this new striped sweater tank from J.Crew Factory. It’s very soft and lightweight, and I think the color palette is really pretty. It has an easy fit and is the perfect length to wear untucked.

I paired it with my Madewell Jules jeans and flip-flops. Even though it was hot outside, I spent most of the afternoon in the air conditioning, so I was quite comfortable.

We flew to Maine on Monday for our annual family vacation, so I finally got to test out my new ROAM suitcase. It’s such a gorgeous piece.

I wanted to wear these PAIGE drawstring pants because they’re so lightweight and comfortable for travel. I paired them with my white Sambas and added a fitted white V-neck tee to balance the volume of the wider-leg pants.

For a bit of whimsy, I added this fun cord necklace with a fish charm, along with a stone beaded bracelet in similar brown tones layered with a gold stretch bracelet from another set to give the stack a little more presence.

I also brought my Splendid Lounge Denim Jacket in the Moonstone wash. It works with so much of what I packed, so it’s the perfect layer whenever I need one.

Yesterday was our first full day at the lake! (We’re staying at my parents’ vacation home.) It was a bit overcast, and we were all feeling lazy, so we spent most of the day hanging out here.

I did run into town early in the morning to pick up a few groceries, so I threw on my Madewell Jules jeans and this super-soft Splendid cardigan. It was only 57 degrees!

I changed to go out to dinner in town. I wanted to wear this navy ribbed scoop-neck top with the beaded fish necklace, so I paired it with my PAIGE Anessa jeans and jelly flip-flops. I tied my J.Crew striped beach sweater around my shoulders for a little extra warmth, and it ended up being perfect in the air-conditioned restaurant.

This Madewell woven shoulder bag is the only bag I brought on this trip. It’s the perfect size—not too big for going out to dinner, but roomy enough to hold a few extra essentials on longer sightseeing days. The espresso brown woven leather goes with everything and adds a nice bit of texture to any outfit.

And that’s a wrap! We’re hoping to get the boat out on the lake today and do some tubing (I’ll just be the spotter, don’t worry!). Then we’re getting together with extended family for dinner tonight.

It was a bit overcast when we woke up this morning, but it’s already burning off and shaping up to be a gorgeous day.
