Corduroy: It’s Baaaack!

Word on the street is that corduroy is trending this season, and I’m pretty excited about it. Cords are a great alternative to jeans for those of us who live a casual lifestyle, and the corduroy of 2018 is not the rigid fabric of the 1970s. The cords that are out now are extremely comfortable and figure flattering.

I opted for a pair in my trusted skinny silhouette, but they come in every shape and style (and color) imaginable. I fell in love with this mauve shade after seeing these featured on another blog.

If this outfit looks familiar, that’s because I leaked it last week due to these cords being on sale. They’re part of the Bloomingdale’s Friends & Family Sale, which ends today.

Bloomingdale’s has an amazing return policy, in case you aren’t familiar. They allow an entire year for you to return a purchase, free of charge, as long as it’s still in saleable condition, and they also offer free shipping for Loyallists. It’s free to sign up for the Loyallist program, and that also enables you to earn rewards. I highly recommend it!

So back to these cords… they are velvety soft, and they have a comfortable 9.75″ rise. The inseam is 27″ so a little shorter than some — that will be ankle-length or cropped on most women. I like this length for pairing with loafers or booties, and they’ll also fit easily in tall boots when it gets colder.

These cords have a great fit and nice pocket placement. J.Brand isn’t a brand I wear a lot, but sometimes they really nail it. Those distressed white skinnies I’ve had for a few years are J.Brand jeans, and they’re one of my all-time favorite pairs of jeans. I like how J.Brand pockets tend to be on the smaller side, which I find more flattering on me personally.

For size reference, I went with the 29 in these cords. That’s my usual size in J.Brand jeans, so they’re pretty much on par with Paige denim for sizing.

Even on sale, these are on the spendy side, so I linked up some other options in the shopping widget at the end of this post. I don’t always splurge on trendy pieces, but when it comes to jeans and cords, the fit and comfort are worth it to me, and I do see these being in my closet for several years.

I’m nothing if not predictable, so I paired these mauve cords with a grey cashmere sweater. In my opinion, you simply can’t go wrong with grey when you’re wearing a shade of pink.

But pink cords are also great paired with white or black, navy and white stripes, olive green, and even camo. Layer a denim jacket or field coat on top to add dimension. I’m planning to style these a few different ways for a future post.

To finish off the look, I went with grey suede loafers and a light grey bag — one of my favorite fall combos — and I accessorized with a silver pendant necklace.

This outfit is super simple, but I like how the pink cords are a little unexpected and the grey sweater keeps it classy.

  1. We are on the same page, Jo-Lynne. I’m wearing cords in my blog post today too!! I bought them last year, and I love how they add a winter vibe to the jeans!!
I’m also now glad I didn’t give away my cord tan jacket from years ago….

  2. Love the cords!  I have some in rust and also a golden color.  🙂  How do you feel about the pink with brown? Too throw-back?  Also, are we “over” coated denim?  Or is leather-look-alike still enough on trend?

    1. Good question! I wondered that myself. Leather (faux) pants were all over the internet the last two years. Are they not trending now?
I do like the soft pink of these cords. Cuffed and paired with a pair of booties, throw on a chunky sweater and you’re all ready for the winter months.

    2. I think pink with brown is fun, and everything right now is throw-back, ha! I will be curious to see if the coated denim is around much this winter, but I see a lot of leather and leather-look leggings.

  3. I love the new cords but I feel like somehow they add width. Do you agree? Maybe its that the texture just throws my eye off.

    1. Maybe some, or it could be the cut of these in particular… The shorter length plus wearing them with flats could do that. They are cute with ankle boots with a bit of a heel, but I wanted to keep this more of casual look. Come to think about it, I had tan cords in much the same cut a few years ago, and I loved them, but did feel that made me look a little more squatty than normal. Ha!

      Here, I found them. How’s this for a blast from the past…. https://jolynneshane.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/denim-red-tan.jpg 😂

  4. I was wondering if you are okay!  I’m glad to know that you are.  I love this outfit, and plan on adding a pair of chords to my closet.  The one big positive about the storm (Michael) heading our way, is that it’s bringing in Fall temps behind it.  Yay!  I just hope they stay.  Have a great rest of the day!

  5. I love everything about this outfit and it looks great on you!  There’s that awesome Rebecca Minkoff bag again…….is Santa listening?

  6. Love this outfit and the color combo.  I have a pair of cords from last year from LOFT. They are not quite burgundy. Maybe a very deep raspberry.  I do like them with a cream or off-white sweater for something other than jeans, but I think I like the color of your cords much better.  You look sooo comfortable and everything goes together so well. 🙂

  7. Jo-Lynne, Thanks for the shopping suggestions. Got a couple of pairs via Loft link. So glad corduroy is back!

  8. I’m not sure I understand the fit of these cords. They look cropped and sort of skinny, but they look like they’re not tight around your leg but rather straight and kind of loose. Please explain! Thanks!

  9. LOVE cords!! I have an olive green and rust colored pair, but I really like these too! They are a fall staple for me, as they are a nice break from jeans. LOVE!!!
