Fashion Friday :: High School Reunion

DeAnn writes in:

My 20-year High School reunion is in about 5 weeks! Yikes! I’m an apple shape with about 12 more lbs I’d like to lose, so that gives you a little background. 🙂

Here’s what’s happening: Friday night we’re all meeting at the football game and then going out for drinks afterwards. Saturday afternoon is a family picnic and then Saturday night is the actual reunion party. It’s a smallish town, so a cocktail-type dress is more than appropriate. Any suggestions?

True confessions. I skipped my 20 year high school reunion. (And my 10th. And my . . . ) Well, you get the drift. So having never actually BEEN to one, I’ll have to imagine what one might wear. Obviously you want to look awesome to make all the old boyfriends see what they’re missing, right? Heh.

Here’s what I’m thinking.

FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAME & DRINKS: Do you love jeans? Do you have a killer pair? That’s what I would wear Friday night. Wear a pair of stylish jeans that you feel really great in and then dress for the weather. I guess this is early fall in Virginia, right? So layers are good. Since you said you’re an apple, I’d recommend a structured jacket with an embellished tank or tee underneath it — something you are comfortable wearing alone if it gets hot in the bar later on. Go for a cute flat shoe or a chunky boot. It’s a ball game so you don’t want to look fussy.

If you don’t have a fabulous pair of jeans, this might be the time get some. That is something I’d invest in because you will get lots of wear out of them.

I love this look from Banana Republic:

The Sequin Shoulder Pullover with the Knit Moto Jacket and Dark Wash Flared Jeans. The Quinn Platform Penny Loafer is divine, or if flats are more your speed, the Anna Rouched Ballet Flat (pictured) is adorable. The Metallic Crossbody (pictured) is cute but I’d probably go for something bigger. This Madison Leather Satchel is awesomesauce. Can I get an amen?

Here’s another cute look, this one from LOFT. Although I’d ditch the heels and go for flats with this.

Or check out these Gap 1969 Midweight Slim Trouser Jeans (Light Blue Wash). LOVE these.

SATURDAY PICNIC: What about a casual skirt and sweater? Or perhaps some Bermuda length shorts. Shop your closet for this one. Go casual but wear something that is flattering and you feel good in. I love this look from the LOFT. You could wear a cropped jean with a cute lightweight sweater if it’s not too hot.

If you don’t like the stripes on the sweater (it might not be great for the midsection) then you could probably find something similar in a solid. But I think the stripes are what make it and it actually might be more forgiving than you’d think. Go for some cute sandals or flip flops or ballet flats.

Or perhaps a casual dress with a light cardigan would work for this too — depends on what you are most comfy in.

Me? I’d be going for my cropped jeans for sure.

SATURDAY NIGHT: This is the fun part! Definitely a dress. I hate to be overdressed, so personally I probably wouldn’t go for cocktail, but something a little fun. I’d go shopping for this if I were you. Unless you have something in your closet you’re dying to wear. I think a sheath is most flattering on an apple shaped figure — something with structure, for sure, and nothing too clingy. I love all these dresses from Ann Taylor. Or you could go to your favorite department store and see what they have. Bring a trusted friend along for a second opinion, and make a day of it! Then accessorize it up and you’re good to go!

By the way, all of the stores I’ve linked to are having awesome sales right now — 30 to 40% off! WOOT!

  1. Is it wrong I was excited to read you have not been to any of your class reunions either? ha!

I love that Banana Republic outfit for the football game!!!

  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!! This was very, very helpful!! Time to do some shopping!!! I’ve been debating about whether or not to go to this for the entire year! The truth is, because of Facebook, I’ve reconnected with a lot of these folks. We were a very close class…most of us spent 12 or so years together in school! I’m actually looking forward to it!
