May Favorites 2020

It’s time for my May Favorites — some of the makeup and wardrobe items I’m particularly loving right now. These are my must-haves for spring!

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten // eleven

I can’t believe today is May 20th. This month has flown for me, despite the extension of our stay home orders. It’s been unseasonably cold for the most part, but we’re finally getting some warmer temperatures, and I’ve been able to break out some of my spring and summer clothes this past week.

one // These are my favorite shorts right now, and I’m so bummed they’ve already sold out. I don’t know if it’s because they’re having issues with their supply chains due to COVID, or if they just weren’t planning to keep these in their summer lineup, but it’s a bummer because they’re really good, and the price is right.

Old Navy has a similar style here and here, and Banana has these.

two // This is my go-to lip liner. It goes on soft and smooth, and you can build out your lips if you want the appearance of a little more fullness. Pillow Talk is such a good neutral color, and I use it under all of my lipsticks and glosses.

I wanted to call attention to it this month because I’ve started pairing it with the MAC Lipglass in All Things Magical and bypassing the lipstick step. It’s the perfect neutral lip for summer. (See #ten below.)

three // I can’t believe this JLS reader fave is still fully stocked, and it comes down to $10.80 + free ship with code ALLIN. A lot of ladies have purchased the red one and love that color as well.

I would say it’s true to size, but some say it runs big and needed to size down. You can leave it out or front tuck it, depending on your body type and the proportions of the rest of your outfit.

also wearing: Sam Edelman slides

four // I’m loving these white crop straight jeans with some moderate distressing for an ultra-casual vibe. Size up if ordering; I have the 29.

five // These are my favorite summer sandals right now. They’re so comfortable and easy to walk in, plus the stud details are on trend.

I like silver studs on the medium natural leather but they also come in several other colors, and some of them have gold studs.

six // I’ve had a lot of bags and dark circles to cover up lately, and never have I been more thankful for this concealer, lol!!! It goes on smoothly and blends in easily and has great coverage. I use color #4.

seven // I’ve found myself wearing this Kendra Scott cuff a lot lately. I love the mixed metals and the feminine filigree design, plus it’s substantial enough to make a statement and doesn’t require any stacking or mixing and matching.

eight // My go-to self-tanning lotion for years, this product goes on smoothly and evenly and lasts several days or up to a week if you keep up with it.

I usually apply it two or three days in a row and then start going every 2 or 3 days to keep it up. It does have a mild scent, but I don’t find it unpleasant. See my tips for applying self tanner like a pro.

also wearing: P448 sneakers

nine // These jeans are spendy, but they have an amazing fit and feel — like I’ve been wearing them for years, right out of the box. The wash and distressed details are perfection.

I got mine on sale, but unfortunately they’re back to full price at the moment. I’ll keep an eye on them and let you know when they go on sale again.

also wearing: J.Crew roll-cuff linen tee

ten // This is the best picture I could find of the MAC Lipglass in All Things Magical over top of the Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lip liner.

eleven // Finally, this linen henley has been super popular among JLS readers, and I’ve been wearing mine every chance I get. As of this morning, this pretty pink has been restocked in all sizes!

It’s 60% off plus free shipping with code ALLIN, bringing it down to $13.80. It runs true to size; I have the small.

    1. My sister is turning 50 this summer and I’m thinking of getting her the Anna Beck reversible disc necklace that JoLynne has shared here before. It’s such a versatile piece. It’s silver on one side and gold on the other and works for dressy or casual. It’s not dainty, nor is it oversized. It hits a nice sweet spot!

    2. Hi- check out Jo-Lynne’s recent blog post on great (graduation?) gifts. She suggests some great bracelets from David Yurman, John Hardy, etc. ALWAYS classic and something one would keep for a lifetime. 🙂

  1. Good Morning! Loft is definitely having a good sale today! They suspended their 30-day return policy so does that mean they’re not accepting returns at all?

  2. I managed to get a pair of the Gap shorts when you first posted them, but I haven’t gotten to wear them because it’s been too cold in Delaware. I also ordered the chevron shirt from Loft and it should be arriving any day. I used my Clarins self-tanner on my face yesterday because I decided to at least pretend it’s spring! This is, by far, the best self-tanner I’ve found. I have pale skin and freckles so this buildable color is perfect for me.

I’m keeping Paul and your whole family in my thoughts and prayers, Jo-Lynne. I’ve lost both of my parents in the last two years and I know how hard it is, especially when you’ve been very close. My heart goes out to all of you.

  3. I love the Clarins self-tanner; I use it on my face whenever people will see me haha!
How do you figure out the right color for concealer (and foundation) without trying it out? I keep using the same ones I have had since I know the color from in-store consultation years ago. I have never used lip liner. What are the advantages? Also, with lip color? I also keep using the same one I have had since I had a consultation in store.
    Okay, enough questions today.
My thoughts are with you, Paul and your family.

    1. I usually purchase those types of products in the store, so get a good match. Lip liner helps your lipstick from bleeding into the skin around your lips, and it keeps your lipstick on longer. (I put mine all over my lips, not just around the edges.) It can also help shape your lips if you want to make them fuller or even out anything.

      1. Thank you. I will have to wait to look at the concealer (I have some concealer now, and I have to admit I rarely use it as I am working from home.) I may try a lip liner (as you say all over my lips) with the Lipglass you recommend. Thank you.

  4. I agree with you on the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Away Concealer but I wonder if you’ve ever tried her foundations? And if so, which one/s did you like? Also, I love self tanner too, but I have light colored sun spots on my face, but with my current self tanner,  as my face skin “tans” so do the sun spots – they darken and it’s not a pretty site. Do you find this with the Clarins self tanner? Thanks in advanced for replying

    1. I haven’t used her foundation, but I did try her powder once and it was nice. I haven’t used self tanner on my face, so I can’t say if it makes the brown spots worse. I usually just put on makeup or wear nothing. I should try the clarins tho.

  5. Boy, Loft is having a great sale now, aren’t they!  Since I will be wearing a mask when I’m out and about for the foreseeable future, I’m only wearing ChapStick.  Your studded sandals are so nice.  I hope you are having a good day!

  6. Been eyeing the linen henley but it was out in the rose color, but now see its stocked. :)But I’m not sure what size to get in it…..XS or Small.  I usually take XS in LOFT blouses and shirts but some t-shirts I do small, but now with the boxy, shorter styles, small could be too big.  If I’m 5’3″ about 120lbs. and 34B, what size would you think?  Does the shirt run long? Fit snug? I think the linen would be great for doing the front tuck and the cap sleeve is great, as it helps the shoulders from burning, but you still feel you are in a sleeveless shirt.  Anyway, LOFT is taking sooooooo long to get shipments its hard to order the wrong size and start all over.  I’m still looking for a floral blouse from them and its been forever.  The cardigan I ordered you styled awhile back finally just came.  I got the light blue and its so pretty.    Someone mentioned they aren’t having their 30 day return policy.  That is good. I liked when they gave you longer.  Hope your family is doing okay.  I still think of you all with Paul’s father passing.

    1. Hi, I agree with you that Loft is taking a long time with shipments. However, I think they are having free returns so you can order 2 sizes and return the ones that don’t fit. I realize there might be a gap in getting a credit for a return, but if you don’t want to wait more than a month from original order to return & get a new size or have the item go out of stock, this works.

  7. I have a similar concealer from Becca. It’s great for repairing post-mask wearing smudges which seem inevitable. My lipstick and gloss wearing have been pretty nonexistent due to transfer to the inside of my mask. I did manage to get my hands on a few disposables so I’m using them while my cloth mask is air drying.

Here’s an odd coincidence. I got up at 6 am here is California where it’s just a bit past 10 and I’m reading my inbox. I put on that LOFT top and those sandals. My sandals are more a dark caramel and shirt is in the red version. It’s almost pinkish orange not at all red.

A couple things I love about the top are it has no shoulder seams so it fits over the large bust without looking too big. The hem is even all the way around so a front tuck works great without a huge drooping backside. I’m thinking of ordering the black stripe.
