Fashion Fails: The Worst Purchases I Made This Year

Okay, friends! Today, I’m bringing you a fan-favorite post—my most regrettable fashion purchases of the year. These are the items I bought with high hopes but didn’t wear as much as I expected, and ultimately, they didn’t earn a lasting spot in my wardrobe.

Before I dive in, I like to add a quick disclaimer. If you bought any of these based on my recommendation, please don’t feel duped. These aren’t bad products! They just didn’t work for my personal style, lifestyle, or the rest of my wardrobe—but they might still be great for you. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

My 13 Most Regrettable Fashion Purchases of 2024

#1. Pistola Monroe High Waist Crop Cigarette Jeans

also wearing: Faherty Golden Hour Pullover Sweater (S) // similar P448 John (39) // Tom Ford sunnies

My hunt for a pair of straight ankle jeans to rotate with my beloved MOTHER Dazzler continues. I thought this pair could be the one. I purchased them during the #NSale in July, but I put on a few pounds this fall, and it all went to my middle. Now the waist is too snug, which makes them dreadfully uncomfortable. I tried sizing up, but they were too big everywhere else and looked dumpy.

I could keep them, in hopes that I drop a few pounds in the new year, but I learned long ago that leaving too-small jeans in my closet doesn’t motivate me to cut out carbs and train for a half marathon; it’s just the opposite. It makes me want to give up and eat bonbons all day. So I’ll pass them on so someone else can enjoy them and focus on filling my closet with clothes that fit and feel good on the body I have now.

#2. Evereve Yara Midi Skirt

also wearing: KUT from the Kloth Kara (also a regrettable purchase…) // Michael Stars tank (O/S) // Carolina slide sandals (8)

I loved the colors in this skirt and bought it as a way to break out of my denim rut. But the length just didn’t do me any favors—it hit my legs at an awkward spot. After wearing it once or twice, I found myself reaching for summer dresses instead when I wanted a non-denim option. By the end of the season, it was in the donation pile.

That said, I don’t really regret this purchase. It wasn’t a costly “mistake,” and I’m all for trying new things. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t—but if you never try, it’s easy to get stuck in a style rut.

#3. Vince Smocked Dress

Now, this dress was a costly mistake, haha! It was quite pricey, albeit on sale. (It was an #NSale purchase.) For the price, I should have been sure I loved it before I took the tags off. Body-con dresses are hit or miss for me these days. Some have a way of skimming the body without clinging, and this one… does not.

I wore it once to go out to dinner with friends (that is when I took this photo.) I felt a little self-conscious, but I had paid a lot for it, and I love the texture and the square neckline. I told myself I was overthinking it and being too hard on myself.

Then a few weeks later, I put it on again to go to a college orientation event, and I asked my husband how it looked, and he was like, “Uh… you have other things that look better.” That was all I needed to hear. I wish I’d asked him before I took the tags off and wore it the first time!

(He doesn’t express a negative opinion about my fashion choices very often, so I’ve learned to trust him when he does. In this case, he spoke the words that I instinctively knew. Hearing it was the confirmation I needed.)

#4. Frame Le Slim Raw Fray Hem Palazzo Jeans

also wearing: AllSaints bomber jacket (S) (budget option) // Sam Edelman Usha Booties (8) // Hammitt VIP

This one pains me because I want to love these jeans. The black wash is perfection, and I’ve seen them look amazing on other women. But every time I put them on, I feel…dumpy. Even in these photos (which I thought I’d love), they didn’t look quite the way I envisioned.

Wide-leg jeans are tricky, and I think the length is part of the problem with these—I think I look better in more cropped styles. The outfit concept is solid, but I’d be better off finding a pair of flares in this wash instead.

#5. PAIGE Anessa Raw Hem High Waist Crop Wide Leg Utility Jeans in Tonal Ecru

also wearing: Michael Stars Nara Mock Neck Top (M) // Vionic Merlot (7.5) // Dragon Diffusion Santa Croce Tote

Speaking of a cropped pair… I almost didn’t include these jeans in this post because, honestly, I don’t hate them. In fact, I set them aside to reconsider next spring. I have this style in the Rock Show Distressed wash (which, by the way, is on sale!) and really like them, but white denim tends to be more unforgiving than blue and black jeans.

I wore this pair once and felt okay in them, but I didn’t reach for them again. I think I just prefer other styles when it comes to white and off-white washes. The jury’s still out, but since I only wore them once, I figured they earned a spot on this list.

#6. bobi Utility Tee

also wearing: PAIGE Anessa Utility in Tonal Ecru (29) // Sam Edelman raffia slides (8)

So this top, I actually really like, but I think I only wore it once. I can’t even tell you why I didn’t wear it more. Every time I passed by it in my closet, it didn’t seem to fit my mood or go with the bottoms I wanted to wear.

I feel like it’s the color more than the style. I love olive, but I rarely wear it with blue jeans. It looks good with white (and this ecru) and black, but I didn’t find myself wearing a lot of white or black jeans this summer. So yeah, this top just sat. And this fall, when it might have looked more seasonal with washed black jeans, I never reached for it either. Sometimes, that’s just the way it is, I guess! I just had other things I liked more.

#7. RAILS Easton Wool Blend Jacket

also wearing: Jenni Kayne sweater (S) // MOTHER Weekender in Teaming Up (30) // Veronica Beard Lada Boots (8.5)

Someone asked about this jacket a few days ago, and I was like, Oh, yeah, I still have it! Still love it and can’t wait to wear it! So why haven’t I? Well, I did wear it once, and I didn’t like it with the chunky sweater. Also, these jeans have a mid-rise, and the jacket is cropped, so I think it would work better with higher rise jeans.

I liked it better the way I styled it HERE with the high rise wide leg crop jeans and a thin crewneck tee, so I think I need to try that again.

The other issue I’m having with jackets like this is, we had a very warm fall, and a wool jacket seemed too heavy most days. Then it suddenly got verrrrrrry cold, and I’m wearing long puffer jackets and teddy coats. Sometimes we experience a mild January and I end up wearing things like this more after the holidays, so we shall see… I’m not getting rid of it, but as of right now, I haven’t gotten the wear out of it that I’d hoped.

#8. Vince Women’s Oasis-w Oxford Shoes

also wearing: Evereve Ella Stripe Tee (S) // AG Mari (29)

This is another item I debated including because they are a newer purchase, and I haven’t decided to part with them yet. (You hear the but coming, right?) I just don’t find myself wearing these sneakers as much as I thought I would, and when I see photos of myself wearing them, I’m not really feeling it. When I want to wear a non-white sneaker, I’m more likely to grab my brown adidas Spezial instead.

And while we’re here, I’m adding the Evereve Ella Stripe Tee as a bonus mention. It’s a cute tee, but when I tried wearing it “in real life,” it just didn’t feel right. Something about the stripes reads a little juvenile to me—not quite in line with my personal style. Speaking of which…

#9. Jordyn Stripe Hoodie

Realizing the Ella Stripe Tee wasn’t for me made me take a second look at the Jordyn Stripe Hoodie. I’d tried wearing it a few times, but it never felt authentic. I’ve come to realize that I prefer a more elevated, luxe look—even in my casual wear.

If I’m going to wear a casual hoodie that’s not a sweater, I prefer something sleek and simple, like the Zoey Rib Inset Hoodie. The solid black color and slim fit make it feel more aligned with my style guideposts: modern, polished, and understated.

As frustrating as it is to part with perfectly good clothes, I’m taking this as a lesson for next year. Going forward, I’m going to try to be more mindful about weighing every purchase against those style guideposts to avoid more regrettable buys.

#9. KUT from the Kloth Zinnia Jacket

also wearing: Wit & Wisdom Itty Bitty Bootcut Jeans (8) // Dolce Vita Azalea Booties (8) // The Reset Too Good Tank (S)

I wore this jacket once, and it just didn’t excite me. It’s on the shorter, thinner side, which makes it feel a little “skimpy” for lack of a better word. The chocolate brown color was also harder to style than I expected. This outfit feels plain to me—and I’m a self-proclaimed Plain Jane! But I still didn’t love it.

Part of the issue is the dark wash jeans. I’ve tried, but I just don’t like them. They feel stuffy and dated to me, even though I know they’re trending. I did try the jacket with lighter jeans, but even then, it didn’t do much for me.

Granted, it was basically the same outfit formula with different pieces, so maybe a fresh combo would have helped. But since I never reached for it again, I decided it was time to let it go.

#10. Rails Alma Cotton Blend Jacket

also wearing: Vince Smocked Shrunken Shirt (M) // MOTHER The Hustler Roller Skimp (29) // Matisse McCarthy Mule (8.5)

Yes, another jacket—and this one pains me. I mean, it’s Rails! It’s a beautiful jacket and was a bit of an “investment” back in July. I thought I’d wear it constantly since I love lightweight jackets for summer and fall, and black is always versatile.

I think what holds me back from reaching for this one is that mandarin collar. It just doesn’t flatter me the way a more open collar does, and it looks bulky when worn with crewneck tops, such as the one I’m wearing above. Plus, this jacket just isn’t very soft and comfortable, which it should be for that price.

On top of that, I already have a similar black jacket in my closet that I do love and wear often. Naturally, I reached for that one instead. The lesson here? Don’t buy something that serves the same purpose as something you already own, because chances are, you’ll always reach for your favorite.

#11. KUT from the Kloth Sienna Wide Cuff Jeans

I realize this is the fourth pair of jeans on this list and the third wide-leg style—and yes, I know that wide leg jeans aren’t as flattering on me as other denim silhouettes. But sometimes I want to wear something different, and wide leg jeans are fun and comfortable. I just have to be more selective, and unfortunately, this pair didn’t make the cut. The oversized cuff didn’t do me any favors, although I loved this pair

I guess it all comes down to subtle details like the fit and the wash. Plus, I think wide leg jeans look better with sandals and more open footwear. Live and learn!

#12. KUT from the Kloth Brea Long Skirt

also wearing: Reese Stripe Tank (S) // similar slides

I thought this denim skirt would be a nice alternative to shorts and jeans in the summer, but I just didn’t find myself wearing it much. I think it works okay with this sweater tank, but I didn’t have a whole lot of luck styling it with other items.

Long skirts can be tricky, and I know a lot of people flat-out hate them. I don’t, but I’m also willing to admit they’re probably not the best fit for my body type—at least at this stage of life. Maybe back when I still had a waist, lol!

I feel like this wash is better suited to summer, so I put this away and I’ll revisit it next spring. I didn’t want to give up on it yet, but I definitely did not get a good cost per wear out of it so far.

#13. Michael Kors Sonny Suede Hobo

Finally, I love this bag—but I’ve only carried it once. It sits in my bedroom mocking me. I’m not sure why, since I wear plenty of outfits that work with brown. I even have a pair of chocolate brown boots that get lots of wear. But whenever I need a brown bag, I always seem to reach for a smaller one instead.

I’m not ready to give up on it just yet, but so far, it’s been a bit of a dud.

How about you? Any regrettable purchases this year? And are there any lessons you’ll be taking with you into 2025?

  1. Thank you for this post. It makes me feel better to know that even people such as you who know much more about fashion and style than I make mistakes. The Frame black palazzo jeans remind me of my attempts at wide-leg jeans this year. I too have felt dumpy in almost every wide-leg jean I have tried on. I am not sure why it is so difficult now vs when I was in my 20s. I am now 70 and wore wide leg jeans in my youth. I have maintained my figure (mostly), so I am not sure why most of the wide leg jeans I have tried make me look as though I have gained 25 pounds. I did buy a pair from Old Navy on sale at the end of the summer that look decent. However, I find I hardly ever reach for them. They may soon go in my donate pile.

    1. Yeah, I think some things that worked when we were younger just don’t feel quite right when we get older. That’s how I feel about the stripe tee and sweatshirt, that’s my style, but it felt more authentic when I was younger.

  2. Thanks for showing us items that didn’t work for you, it makes me feel better when I realize I made a similar mistake. Overall, I think most of these items look great on you, but I understand you not loving them much after you bought them. But, I love that you are real with us!

  3. You actually looked great in most of the items you don’t care for but I understand. One thing you said is true for me as well, is that wide leg pants are tricky! The only wide legged pants I love on me are the ones that are fitted in the waist and down the hips and the legs like Kut’s Meg style jean. Every body is so different.

    1. Yes, that is key for me too. The Meg works okay, but I have found that certain washes and inseams are better than others. The Anessa too—I hate the long ones, but the crop is okay (with a heel they’re better.) My favorite is the PAIGE Leenah or the MOTHER Roller Skimp.

  4. Thanks for the post! You probably get this a lot, but where do you send your cast-offs? This is one of the many hurdles that prevent me from refreshing my wardrobe more often 🙂

  5. This is one of my most favorite posts that you do! I haven’t worm my booties very much because it just hasn’t been cool enough. I’m currently in shorts & a t-shirt. Maybe Jan & Feb will be cooler.

  6. This makes me feel less guilty about the clothing purchases I’ve made that I haven’t worn! For me, it was primarily wide leg jeans. I bought a couple and I’ll keep them until spring/summer to see if I’ll wear them with sandals as you suggested. I think midi length skirts and dresses are not flattering on most people. I don’t mind an ankle length (like the length of ankle length jeans) or a maxi (which sometimes needs a slit to be flattering on me) dress. Dress length is tricky!

  7. I always enjoy these posts! Fashion is real!! I have to admit a couple of your items back when, I actually thought to myself, “that is not your best look”. Ha-Ha! I made a promise to myself a long time ago, if I wear an outfit and don’t feel my best, it’s gone. Glad I’m not the only one! Happy Holidays!

    1. I thought the same thing! Like the rust/orange skirt – I remember thinking “this just does not look like her at all.” Haha! I do really enjoy this post every year – it’s interesting and helpful!

    2. Yeah, I mean, sometimes I wear things that I know aren’t ideal for me, but they make me happy for some reason. But then some things I kept because I thought I liked them, but then when I wore them, I felt frumpy or uncomfortable for some reason—those are the ones that made this post.

  8. As with most of your readers, this is a favorite post you do. I have read your blog since around 2017. We have identical body types, but you are 4 inches taller. I have always taken my cue from you—if it works for you, it will probably work for me. But the last few years I have had a difference of opinion about some of your choices. Several of the items I rejected for myself are in this post. Longer skirts, cuffed jeans and most wide leg jeans. Now, the Paige Anessa works for you. I have purchased and returned them at least twice, because I look dumpy in them. I have one pair of wide leg jeans I kept, from Chicos, but I won’t buy anymore. The crops, flares, straight leg, smaller bell bottoms, all work for me, and that’s fine. I love most of your jackets, but I have a problem hoarding jackets, so I didn’t buy any of them. I feel like with your help, I have come a long way in determining what works for me and rejecting things that won’t work for my body. I think most of the things you didn’t end up wearing weren’t horrible, and it’s good for us to keep trying new things. Your sharing your struggles, including your thought process with try ons, are very helpful to your readers. Thank you for putting yourself out there.

  9. I could have lived without the red sneakers that I bought. But there was no talking me out of them. 🤣

You look great in the body con dress and the wide leg denim!

  10. I almost bought the denim skirt but that odd shaped seam up the front stopped me. I bought one without that weird seam and love it. I’ve worn it with boots in this fall.

  11. You’re wrong about the Kara skirt. I think it looks great on you and its very flattering and does not hit your leg in the wrong spot, and the colors are great for spring/summer. I also think the white jeans look good, although I like a slim leg in white jeans. The denim skirt is way too long and looks uncomfortable and restricting and hits the wrong spot on your legs. You’re spot-on with the jackets and some of the wide-leg jeans! And I have to agree with your husband on the body con dress.

    1. I reject the idea that there is a right or wrong with fashion. The idea behind this post is to identify items I liked enough to purchase and put in my closet, but didn’t end up reaching for very often, and to analyze why. At the end of the day, we should wear what we love, and not feel obligated to wear things we don’t. I don’t like how I look in the Kara skirt, so it’s not for me. 🙂

      1. Totally agree that the point is to make you feel confident. If it doesn’t do that, it’s gotta go! I did like that skirt in theory, but I see your frustration. I’m petite and often feel frumpy in skirts that length. There is a very narrow range, and even then I will only wear them with heels or wedges. For me to wear a skirt with flats, it has to be knee length or higher to somewhat elongate my short legs!

  12. Great post! It’s somewhat comforting to know that a professional sometimes makes the same mistakes the rest of us make. I’ve mentioned this before- I’d like to see you in more color! I do see some color here in your post, but lots of dark colors. I am NOT affiliated in any way with House of Colour, but I had a color analysis done almost two years ago now, and it has literally changed my life. I also did style analysis with them and have cut down dramatically on my style mistakes. Still make some tho, I have to admit, but when I do, I am able to figure out where I went wrong. They have consultants everywhere.

I read your blog every day – love it! Happy holidays to you 😍

    1. I don’t really see myself as a professional, lol. I’m just crazy enough to put all of my fashion foibles out on the Internet, lol! I know I look good in color, but I feel like neutrals are so soothing. They make me feel happy and comfortable. 🙂 I did a color analysis with Color Guru, and I think I sent bad photos – i had a spray tan, and it make me look warmer than I am. They told me I’m an autumn, and I know I am not. So I am annoyed with myself that I wasted the $$ – I never followed up and asked if I could send new pix. I may try House of Color, just to see what they say in comparison.

      1. I’m no expert on this, but I remember my mom teaching it in an old “Beauty Control” class. I would’ve guessed you’re a cool winter since your coloring always looks good in deep jewel tones. If you do have an analysis done, be sure to post a review of the process!

      2. One of the most interesting things I learned in color analysis is that each season has its own neutrals. For example I look much better in ivory than optic white. I kinda think it has to be in person, not via a photo. Go for it!,,

  13. Oh my…… I thought the majority of the items looked really good on you (you rocked the body con dress) but being uncomfortable or stepping out of your style zone is hard, I personally have taken a very mindful approach to shopping the last two years and this year happily didn’t make a single “regret” purchase, but I also don’t buy anywhere near the amount of clothes most your readers do. I think at a certain age we know our bodies and what works, for instance the last couple years have been all about the high rise wide leg jean, can’t do it – as someone who is thin and athletic I look like a stick woman, it’s seriously hysterical and I’ve tried on dozens, so I just choose not to buy any and stick with flare or straight leg – and if they are not “trending” don’t really care but again that’s a mindset

    1. I agree about knowing what works at this point. One reason I try so many styles is this blog. But also, I am so content to wear my old favorites, if I didn’t push myself out of my comfort zone, I would definitely get stuck in a time warp. Somewhere there is a happy medium! 🙂

  14. I love the Vince dress and Frame jeans on you! You are too hard on yourself; I know we all are!
I understand though too about trying things and thinking they look great then realizing they don’t later…( either because of body changes or reality lol!)

  15. I’m the one that asked you about the wool jacket. It’s a cute jacket but too expensive to be a mistake for me. I like the corduroy brown one. It would be a perfect jacket for me but I’m waiting for a better deal after Christmas. I don’t like to say anything about outfits bloggers wear if I think it’s not flattering on them but I did think that on the ones you mentioned. I like to emphasize a compliment on the outfits that are really flattering. I think wide leg jeans or pants look better if they are longer not crop. My favorite style on me is JCrew factory full length wide leg jeans because they fit slim at the waist and hips. I’m petite and I don’t feel dumpy in them. At the end of the day does it really matter to wear comfortable clothing even if it’s not the most flattering. Maybe for those on social media but in the real world no one cares. I like the burgundy shoes. I’m trying to find cheap ones.

  16. I bought your number 1 pistola jeans and really don’t love them for the same reason. The waist just isn’t comfortable with menopause belly and no way I can go up in size for the rest of the fit. I too was desperate for new jeans similar style.
Both the Evereve sweatshirt type shirts with stripes I was drawn to when you styled them but their I knew I would get tired of the stripe. I never wear the blue stripe one I bought from there last Spring. Live and learn for sure.

  17. I LOVE the ecru Anessa jeans on you! Much like a few of the other items on your list (the Yara & denim skirts, for instance) they would benefit from a heel. I am also wondering about the wide-leg jeans: you’ve mentioned a number of times that the modern length is a couple/few inches from the floor, but IMO they look most fashionable worn as long as possible with whichever shoe is chosen. Maybe try that to see if it works better for you? That’s my personal preference, anyway 🙂

    1. It seems counter intuitive, but I feel like the wide leg jeans look better shorter b/c it allows you to see the ankle. But I also understand that a longer length is elongating… in theory. I think it depends on the body type and also is worn on top. And I agree that a heel helps the Anessa jeans and the skirts. I just need more clothes I can wear with flats b/c my lifestyle is so casual.

  18. I won’t even try on any pants/jeans that have patch pockets like your Paige ecru. My eyes are drawn to the pockets and I feel makes my hips look wider. That’s exactly what I don’t want to emphasize. Even on others my eyes focus on the pockets, and for many people it doesn’t do them justice. Just my opinion.

I also won’t wear pants with large cuffs because I’m short to begin with and they only make me look dumpy and wide. Unless you’re very tall and slim, they make most ladies look shorter and wider. Who wants to do that?

I’m a true winter and won’t purchase clothing in colors that don’t flatter me. The shape and style might be perfect, but if the color isn’t right, I won’t reach for it. I’ve learned that lesson and tweaking my makeup didn’t help either. I think some people are neutral coloring and can teeter between cool and warm tones, but most people look best in their colors.

Sometimes we just want to have fun and try different styles, shapes and colors. I’ve done that with purchases and find I don’t wear them because it’s just not me. I’ve learned and still learning, to choose clothing that resonates with my lifestyle, flatters my body shape and in colors that make me feel great.

Thanks for doing this post. Unless you pointed out, I may not have noticed or be able to place my finger on why these pieces don’t work. It’s a good teaching experience to learn from you.

  19. I love the ecru jeans on you!

For wide-leg jeans, I have had to experiment. I have the light wash cuffed ones that you pictured, and I agree that they look better with sandals. I found a pair of wide-leg black trouser jeans at J Crew Factory that I didn’t think I would like but tried them on and thought “Sold!” I have them on now at work, actually, with pointy-toed shoes and I love the look.

    Great post!

    1. Sandie, I have those trouser jeans from JCrew factory in black and dark wash. I bought the dark wash first and loved them. I then ordered the black ones. I wear them with pointed toe boots too. I’m petite and they make me look a lot taller. I love that they’re full length.

  20. You are correct about #2 & #3. The skirt does have nice colors to it but the pattern is too distracting and the hemline is a miss. It looks more like a swimsuit coverup than anything that actually should be worn for a purpose. The dress does nothing for your figure ( nothing wrong with the figure ). It just does not compliment in a way a dress should the fabric texture is a distraction as well. I am not sure that even pairing it with some cute black slides at that point would have helped. Sorry, I am not the fashion person you are, just telling what I see.

  21. Thanks for this post! I thought you might be interested that the Bobi utility tee was one of my most worn items of this year – both in summer and SoCal fall/winter – so wasn’t a fail all around! I probably found it from here (although it could have been in a Trendsend box). Also I think you look amazing in the dress. Of course what matters most is what you think but wanted to share a 2nd opinion that if you want to wear body con you totally can imho

    1. I’m so glad the bobi tee worked for you! And thank you re: the body con dress. I just don’t feel comfortable in it. I would rather wear one that is a little more sleek and skims the body, like the Ming Wang dress. Or a sheath dress with more structure, like the Tommy Bahama Palma A Dora. Again, it comes back to that I have others I like better, not that this one is so terrible. 🙂 Maybe it would be helpful on future posts like this, if I link to the similar items I own that I reach for instead.

  22. The brown HOBO bag reminds me of the HOBO brand hobo bag in wine that I purchased from Northstrom rack at a really good price 3-4 years ago. I’m only 5’2″ 142lbs ( but thicker through the middle lol). Thought I would get good use out of it but it was always too large and long for my body type, felt it was in the way; ended up selling it on Ebay to get my money out of it. Seems you have to get just the right style and size of hobo bags.

  23. Interesting post!! Of your 13 misses, the only item I purchased was the Rails wool jacket which I love! I agree with your weather assessment, it was too warm to wear it most of the Fall season, but I have high hopes this winter/spring! Most of my fashion fails is when I buy a “low budget option” and then I need to wash it! Even if I’m very careful, it ends up shrinking, twisting or fading! At least I didn’t spend much on it and enjoyed it for a short season!! I really love your burgundy sneakers!! I have seen other bloggers sell their “cast offs” online! I doubt if that’s something you’re interested in. Plus all your clothes would be too small for me! 🙂

  24. You have gorgeous legs!! Have you ever looked at David Kibbe’s body types? He has a new book coming out January 7 as well, with modernized takes on body types. Maybe it would help you see how gorgeous your body is and how flattering you dress yourself. I’ve been following you for 11 years and you have inspired my style as a 32 year old mom of three (10, 6, and 3).

Please keep dressing yourself! I love your fashion perspective and really enjoy reading your post!

Aren’t husbands the best fashion helpers!

  25. I have been wanting the MK brown suede handbag ever since I saw you feature it, but now maybe not? I always enjoy this post! I was interested to see if any of the sweater tanks you bought would make this list but don’t see it. I bought several in mid to late summer as they were in all the stores, but returned them all as I just couldn’t get the right fit and it felt like too much work to style. I think wide leg jeans look good when they’re a little more fitted through the hip and thigh and with a full length inseam down to the shoes. My Paige Leenah and Anessa are my favorites. My widest pair is from JCrew and I have to admit they do feel a little “extra” but I feel current and stylish when I wear them with sneakers and cardigans. My biggest regret is buying too many cashmere and wool sweaters during the NSale thinking I’d need them for my vacation to Europe in October. The weather ended up being so mild that I did not need them and I regretfullly overpacked. Fortunately they are classic styles that I’ll have forever so I’m sure I’ll get some wear out of them, but I didn’t “need” them (especially living in a mild climate in So Cal). Looking at your pictures in skirts and dresses, I notice that you have great legs – not a flaw on them – so you should show them off! 🙂 I like that Yara skirt on you a lot and I don’t think it hits your leg at an awkward spot at all. However, the midi skirt look is totally my style aesthetic (that is my spring and summer outfit “uniform”). Thanks for always sharing your honest opinions with us all!

    1. That MK bag might work splendidly for you! It’s a great bag. I still have it. I just don’t reach for it for some reason. And I love sweater tanks. I wore the tan stripe one quite a bit. The black and white one, I did return. I didn’t love that big ribbed hemline.

  26. I never comment, but this time I just had to. That Yara skirt, coupled with the jean jacket and white tee underneath looks amazing on you! I loved it the first time I saw it, and I still feel the same. Perhaps you’ll reconsider. I think most (not all) of the other items also look nice, but I do understand your feelings. As I was going thru this post, I thought to myself, “Jo-Lynne must be having one of those days.” By that, I mean that sometimes when I’m not feeling so good about myself, I go thru my closet and think Everything looks terrible on me! (smile)

    1. I’m not having a bad day. 🙂 I do this post every year. I think it’s interesting to analyze what didn’t work out, and it helps me make better purchasing decisions going forward. I don’t think anything here is terrible, or I wouldn’t have kept it. I just have other things I like better that I reach for instead. I hope that makes sense! 🙂

  27. It seems like all the high waisted jeans paired with crop jacked/tops make everyone look rather boxy. We all need a like something that defines our curves and elongates our upper bodies. I know I look like a yardstick sometimes and adding full wide legs is a bad overall look for me

  28. I really love that you explain the reasons for each item that you don’t wear, as it really helps me to evaluate my own thought process! Although I think you look good in all of these pieces, I can totally relate to the fact that you didn’t reach for them. I often end up not wearing or reaching for certain items when I don’t really know why. I like the style, but maybe I just can’t style it right or the shoes I want to wear with it don’t look right, so it just sits in my closet. I really try to be very careful with what I purchase, but I still end up having a pile of things I don’t wear. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I always really appreciate that you include so much explanation for the pieces you style together, as well as the pairings you tried but didn’t like, since most bloggers don’t do this. This has really helped me in better understanding my style, what works for me, and what I want to purchase!!

  29. I hear you about the weather not cooperating! It’s unseasonably warm here, and that totally throws a wrench in styling anything fun and “Christmasy” or even cozy. Though your list did give me an idea to pull out an olive top that I have. At least it’s a seasonal color! Thanks for your honesty, it makes me feel a little better about my under-utilized-pieces.

  30. We ALL have failures. BUT it’s not a total failure if we learn from our mistakes. We are also our own worst critics and tend to pick at things others don’t notice. I agree with your thoughts on the KUT from the Kloth Sienna Wide Cuff Jeans vs the Meg Wide Leg with Cuff. Did you try to tuck your shirt in with the Sienna, you have it tucked with the Megs for the 2/3 rule. The Megs are more slimming on you. The KUT Long Skirt was a definite NO for me even looking at your pictures. It emphasizes the hips and looks “dumpy”. I purchased the HK Hobo bag and while I love the bag, I have only carried it one time. I think the suede tends to be “heavier” in looks. I also have the HOBO Render Crossbody that you have and reach for it a lot. The Vince Oxford Shoes are one of my favorites, subdued color vs a stark red. I wear them to work and are able to bookend with a sweater in that same shade OR blazer with the same color woven in.

  31. Thank you for sharing this. I feel like this is a good push for those of us who buy things and then they don’t work to get rid of them. (although I assume your purchase are part of your business expense so little different of a financial investment than us) I agree with another commenter that I think a majority of these items look great on you but if you’re not wearing them, I can see why they are a “no”. Plus like you said a couple of times, it makes you feel frumpy. That should be our style anti-guidepost word. If it makes you feel frumpy it needs to go. 🙂
I wish you would sell some of your no-go’s! I feel like you and I have opposite body types and some of those cute clothes would work great for me (and I’m sure other people!)

    1. I definitely purchase some things with the blog in mind, but for this post, I try to chose pieces I bought for my personal closet. I didn’t include things I returned or items I bought for sponsored collabs and things. 🙂 And I love the idea of an “anti-guidepost word” lol!

  32. I agree with you on most of these. And ironically there were several I didn’t love at the time, even though in theory they may be items I’d normally like. I’m learning not to dismiss that instinct even when I can’t put my finger on why I don’t like something! Often it’s a subtle thing. But that subtle thing will be what keeps me from wearing it!

  33. This is a fun post. My favorite of what you featured are the ecru wide leg jeans. I ordered and returned the Vince dress and the Rails olive jacket. The olive color on the jacket was a dark one and I did not think it looked good on me. I bought a pair of the Frame Slim Palazzo jeans last spring but returned them because my husband did not think they were flattering on me. Brown is a hard color for me to wear near my face, so I have not bought any brown tops.

  34. I love this post JoLynne. I have several items in my closet that as you said are mocking me. One a pair of fashion sneakers that are multi colored and when I wear them it looks like I’m trying too hard. So yesterday I purchased my plain white sneaks and will wear them I know. Also a gorgeous blue button up shirt from Evereve that I can’t find anything that goes with it; 2 handbags still in their wrapping that I feel that after 2 years I will never wear either. It really hurts to give them up but maybe someone else can wear them. Lesson learned maybe.

  35. Ohhhhhh, I got so excited when I saw the title of this post. It’s validating to me knowing that someone with your knowledge and expierence also has purchases that didn’t go as planned. For me, it’s a pair of light wash cropped Frame wide leg pants. I have the same pants in a darker, full lenth version and I wear them all the time. I’ll also bought and love the green boiled wool Rails jacket. I didn’t get to wear it as much as I wanted this fall, but I am not giving up on it – it’s so gorgeous. I could fill a post about regretable skincare purchases too *sigh*

  36. I really liked the Yara skirt and almost ordered it for myself. I really liked the way you styled it. I have bought 2 pair of wide leg jeans and returned. They just aren’t for me. As I was reading your post I wondered about the red tennis shoes. I loved them and thought about getting some but then I kept thinking about you saying I feel like my feet are arriving before I do. I did get some burgandy tennis shoes and I’m looking forward to wearing those. Great post!!

  37. You always look great, but I’ll admit some outfits are greater than others. Is there a closet in the world where that isn’t true? I did want to comment on wide-leg pants. They are hard to get right! All the oversized, boxy tops (shirts, sweaters, jackets) that looked so cute with our skinnies look awful with wide legs. And wide legs accentuate our need to know how they fit. Are they slim-fit through the hips and upper thighs? Or are they a “relaxed” fit, i.e. clown pants on me! I have tried on many wide-leg pants, but I’ve only found one pair that look great…charcoal ponte ankle pants with enough drape to be flattering. Denim plus wide leg is not my thing.

  38. I love this post; and I’m with you on the wide-leg denim. I’ve purchased several and returned them because they made me look wide & frumpy. I finally found a pair at J. Crew; the high wasted wide-leg trouser jean. I purchased the black in 27 and they’re still a bit big (I’m usually 27” or 28” waist in most jeans)…had them hemmed because the inseam was 33” and I’m only 5’5”. I styled them with the J Crew kitten heel ankle boots from last year and a cropped leather jacket. I’m still toying with them and it looks like they’re the style for Spring 2025? Is that what you’re seeing JoLynn?

  39. I always love this post! I actually think that all of these items look great on you but I understand not loving trends. I would never get on board with wide cuffs on jeans or barrel legs. This helps me to be more mindful of what I purchase! Thanks!

  40. Love this post! I agree about wide leg pants. Look frumpy on me and too much fabric lol. They look good on others. I will stick to straight leg and flares and bootcut. At the end of the day, styles are fun to try but if you aren’t comfortable then no point in wasting money or time if you aren’t going to wear them 🙂

  41. Some items of clothing just don’t work for our body types, and some just need better styling. Like me, you have broad shoulders, a short torso and slim legs. You need something chunkier on the bottom half to balance your top, which is probably why you like those flare jeans so much. With that in mind, I think you should give the Evereve Yara skirt another try. How about some chunky flatform sandals or a chunky sneaker to give some visual weight to your lower half? Or, if you like the low profile slides, you could lose the jacket and pair it with one of your sweater tanks or a V-neck t-shirt (preferably in a darker shade) to minimize your shoulders. Of course, you may just not be a skirt/dress girl, which is fine too. Just thought you should hang onto that piece and try it again when the weather warms up.

    1. Your body type assessment is bang-on, and yes, that cropped jacket does that skirt no favors. Funny, I did wear the skirt once with a black v-neck tank and black wedge sandals, and it definitely looked better styled that way. The black sandals are “heavier” in appearance than the gold slides (plus, a heel always helps). And yes, the black v-neck tank minimizes my square shoulders, but I still didn’t find myself reaching for it much after that. I may have worn it once more time, and then I decided I just don’t like that length, or the way it’s cut or something.

      1. I love this post as we all do! And i like how you close with asking us to share our regrettable purchases but most instead conmmet on how they think things look on you – you are a good sport for sure! Are you planning a best purchases of the year post as well?

  42. I love the color wash on the last pair of jeans pictured. I really need to set up a camera and take photos, it’s so much easier to judge an outfit in pictures. I always love this post. Makes me feel like less of a failure in purchases 🤣😂 I think we all do it!! Buy stuff we like but can’t or won’t wear. I’m doing a closet purge now.

I’ve lost a considerable amount of weight and think I need to hang onto my good jeans because I know the weight is coming back… but maybe I should heed your advice and get rid of what doesn’t fit. But Mother Jeans are so pricy I hate to let them go.

Jo-Lynne I love your blog. Have read it about three years now. My style is very simple like yours and I too am starting to go for more elevated casual. I’m a farmer though and REALLY struggle with clothing, I never know if I’m going to ruin a good outfit because one of the critters gets out and I gotta chase them 🤣😂

Come help me clean out and make sense of my wardrobe please ❤️

  43. Wow Late to the party! I love reading all the comments and i can relate to buying items that don’t work out. I take a selfie before taking the tags off and then still end up getting rid of the item after I see a picture someone else takes of me out and about in the outfit and not liking the way it looks vs. posed for a selfie. My new motto is once I fill a wardrobe hole that I like, stop looking and wear the item to death! Less is More!

  44. I love that you are willing to share the wins and losses! I can’t say enough good things about Alex Mill jeans! They made me love straight leg again!

  45. Great post. I love some of the ideas here listed by your readers regarding taking pictures after you purchase something. I do have a pile of donate. Including a couple tops from Evereve that I thought were cute on you, but when I saw myself in photos I was like no not good on me lol.
I try not to be wasteful with my purchases of clothing. But sometimes it happens. Thank you for keeping it real. 🥰
